LG G8s Face unlock - LG G8 Questions & Answers

Hello can LG G8s "Face unlock" unlock with sunglasses and also can it unlock in dark?
Also does it manage to unlock 90% of time?
I am looking for LG G8s users because i don't know are LG G8 and LG G8s same when it comes to 3d face unlock hardware(TOF sensor).
Thank you

Affirmative, it can be facially unlocked with low or no light and also with corrective or sun glasses. It does not unlock with a chinstrap (face mask) for obvious reasons. I have the LG G8s ThinQ and it unlocks very fast, I got used to this unlocking a lot, I don't use the fingerprint sensor at all. Neither is the HAND ID because it is slow.

Same for me as the above user. I wear glasses and it unlocks lightning fast (have not tried sunglasses).
It will not unlock with a mask on, however it does unlock for me when I have the mask all the way under my chin.

Hi thank you both for reply's, Neera can you please check will your open with sunglasses.
I know its a same hardware, but probably you have different sunglasses. I would appreciate.
Also what is battery life ?
I had in past LG G2 and it was best smartphone in the world. I had five of them. I was forced to change phone after security patches stopped.
I a now with Honor, i am missing double tap from my LG G2.

I am using the G8. one thing to note, if it matters to you, face unlock does work when your eyes are closed. I know this was an issue with pixel phones that got resolved. I have not heard of any pending resolution for the g8.

Ha! That'll need to be fixed!
I'm not surprised it can be fooled by a picture. I thought I read that already somewhere, but I'm not sure.
It's a low security option, has more of a gimmick and is not intended to provide a strong security measure.
I already confirmed that it will be unlocked by a picture of you. Not very strong on the security side, more of a... fun feature, to say so

Does the default Android locking mechanism still only work on the lock screen, or can you now lock out individual applications (messaging for example) like has been possible with dumbphones for almost 10 years now?
Nothing like that present.
Is it meant to be secure? I mean, requiring a slide from left to right is not exactly impenetrable, either.

You also have the pattern or keypad security if you want something more secure.
Mark.
You know Google have even highlighted that its a non-secure way of locking your phone. Its just another type of unlock method (when you have no pin set)
The Face Unlock should implement "smile" detection.
That will make it a bit harder compare to use "still" image to fool the Face Unlock
This isn't really news. Even google's official video shows selecting Face Unlock to be "Low Security - Experimental"
Check here at 38 seconds
you can do 2 levels of security.. face then code. no biggie
Anyone who wants to try Face Unlock can try this : https://market.android.com/details?id=visidon.AppLock
You'll have an idea of what this is about, I have the paid version and it's pretty good actually.
What about pinching one eye or the like when setting up the face-unlock. Should then demand a similar grimace to unlock. Pretty unlikely someone have such a picture around to unlock the phone..
Just a thought.. gonna test it
Well I think it's a nice security update from just a slider and it kinda avoids apples new patent on sliding to unlock a phone unless they also patented this...
In any event think of it like this we don't have to slide to unlock the phone now just look at it. Easier to unlock and a security enhancement.
I mean if I go to a restaurant and forget my phone someone who picks it up won't be able to get into it unless maybe they are a stalker...
So yes if there is someone stalking me who stealthfully snaps my picture then mugs me and takes my phone then yes they can beat the security. But seriously if you look at real world normal situations this is dynamite security.
Even the pattern isn't that secure. Have you ever examined your screen carefully? A lot of the time you can see the pattern by looking at the streaks on the window not to mention someone merely has to watch me do it to learn my pattern. It isn't like I go out of my way to cover it up...
I think people are making way to big a deal about this "security risk".
I really don't think that people who is afraid of getting their phone unlocked by other people would use the face unlock anyway.

Apples patent only covers sliding on a specific line and so doesnt cover Honeycomb onwards if I recall correctly and definitely doesnt cover the unlock action on ICS.

Im curious if face unlock will be affected by changes in facial hair? If I don't shave for a few days and am rocking a mild beard, will I have to reset it with a new picture?

I don't think so... it measures the distances between your facial features (eyes, noise, mouth)
The Face-Unlock feature is not a security feature. It's just a feature to unlock the screen without using your fingers.

Leaving my Verizon G4

I decided to sell my Verizon G4 and Iam kinda bummed in doing so. I've had a string of phones leading up to the G4 in which a locked bootloader was not an issue. I first started flahing with my Verizon Fascinate, then I had the Samsung Galaxy 3....then came the LG G3 which impressed me enough to upgrade early and snag the G4. I love the phone but HATE the lack of flashable flavors. So, I purchased the Motorola X Pure and I am looking forward to having more flashing possiblities. It has basically the same specs as the G4. This was a great phone but lesson learned. I will check back here frequently to see if any progress has been made and I wish all you other G4 good luck! Hopefully some exploits will be found to allow more freedom on this great phone but my patience has waned.

Looks like your only options with Verizon will be to get an unlocked Nexus going forward. All Samsungs since S5 are locked, they blocked HTC M9 from HTCDev to unlock, and all the LG since this phone are locked. Verizon knows to get the big contracts they must have the most secure phone. This is not an attack on this community...it is just collateral damage. You can thank malicious hackers and identity thieves for this.

I have always had some interest in Nexus devices but I never pursued purchasing one due to the lack of MicroSD support. I am sure I could manage without it but if I am spending a chunk of money on something I'd prefer that one luxury. The next best thing I could find was the Moto X Pure. All the freedom of a Nexus device plus a MicroSD slot. Oddly enough, I was also tempted to purchase the Nextbit Robin but I prefer a larger screen size. I played with a Galaxy 6 Edge+ phone as well. I think it's a beautiful phone but again, no MicroSD card slot and lacking the flashing freedom of unlocked devices. I am hoping I enjoy the Moto X Pure as much as I think I will. It arrives Monday and I've been reading up on how to unlock and root it. This will be my first Motorola phone since the Flip Razor.....lol.
You know the Samsung 7 has dual SD cards...at least that's what I read

But on Verizon it will still be bootloader locked and no root.
Don't blame ya. Guess I'm limited to paying full price for Nexus phones.
Samsung is only building one version of the S7. It has all the radios. Seems like you could buy an unlocked one and use it on verizon. There was a EU G4 that worked on VZW. Although I can't imagine advanced calling and Video chat working. The Nexus 6 (Moto) was universal too.
Yea looking at the Verizon S6 forums, they are in the same boat. No roms or anything.
The days of custom roms and root are close to being over unless they can find some miracle break through.
Yea so unless you pay full price for international S7 that is unlockable bootloader (still no word if thats the case).
Sucks.
I think people are nuts for buying a $500-800 computing device and having all sorts of bloat, advertising and tracking software installed and forced upon us.
I have an early Samsung Galaxy Nexus (not currently activated) and the LG Vista VS-880 (that replaced it),
which I plan to sell to finance a newer model.
I'd like a Google-free phone & it looks like CM & other custom roms have passed the VS-880 by.
The LG G4 & Moto X Pure Edition appear to be affordable ($240.) used.
May both be loaded with CM (or other Google-free custom rom) in
USA/Verizon models?
I have read some posts that suggest maybe only non-USA models.
Thanks!
[Soapbox: Do phone companies so control the USA administration
that the monopolistic blocking of rooting & custom roms cannot
be defeated?]
In short, the Verizon model cannot be rom'ed. EU and tmobile ones can.
Are there any phones in the same class, and available used around the same $240. price,
that may be rom'd in the USA on Verizon?
OR, maybe just run-out the current data contract then roll-back to a minimalist phone
& carry a small wifi-or-wait Linux or Tizen tablet?
Moto developer edition phone or nexus. Otherwise you have to port a non Verizon phone in. There won't be advanced calling features in these cases.
Thanks for the tips!
Moto Developer Edition (older tech, slower, smaller display compared to LG G4 or Moto Pure)
Moto Nexus 6 (older tech, slower, lower res display compared to LG G4 or Moto Pure)
But, both appear to be 100% root & rom-able & play nicely with Verizon. Yes?
My eyes would benefit from the better display on the LG G4 or the Moto Pure Edition.
Sure would like to have a micro-SD slot (why none on the Moto's?).
Other compromises ...
Hmmm ... change or run-out contract & downgrade ... hmmm.
Even on stock Roms you may only get HD voice but not video chat with moto or a nexus on vzw. Check on that. Having had tons of moto phones I can tell you that the camera will be the biggest downgrade.
I just left the Verizon G4 because of its many issues. Most won't have problems unless you wireless charge. It burns out after a while. I went though 6 replacements and all burned out after a while. My last G4 also had wireless connection issues where it would connect, disconnect, connect, disconnect in rapid increments until a reboot was performed.
Verizon said it was a known issue, credited my $199 that I spent back in June and I applied it toward a Galaxy S 7 Edge, that also sucks. The beveled screen allows touches from your palm when holding it to type; hitting things like Send and shift at random times. Over the course of the weekend, I sent tons of half completed emails and messages. Also when holding it and enough skin is touching the screen, it stops receiving inputs when typing until you reposition. And if you are normally using it, the edges are less sensitive to prevent "palming". It mostly works but freaks out occasionally and gets more input than it can handle. Also the curve of the screen and usable space (technically the whole screen is usable) makes the screen feel narrow and confined, like a smaller screen.... hard to explain. It just felt smaller compared to the same sized G4. I didn't buy a case yet but a case should help. Screen protectors are going to be a pain too.
I called Verizon and they swapped it out for a 64gb Note 5. It's the physical same size as the G4 with hard buttons to increase screen size to 5.7" but the same physical body. So far it feels like a solid device. The SPen will probably come in handy for my work. The Note 5 feels like the G4, which is what I like.
Since Root and Unlocking is basically dead... it doesn't really matter what device you pick now. I miss the buttons on the back. Physical home button makes up for lack of Double tap to wake. I still use Action Launcher with Double tap to sleep. Wireless Charging on both the S7E and Note 5 are built in.
This thread pretty much confirms what I've been feeling for some time now -- If I want a fully unlocked, rootable, bloat-free phone I have to go with a Nexus.
My Galaxy Nexus was a pretty great little guy back in the day, the only real problems I had with it were battery life. Hopefully newer Nexus phones are a little better there.
Maybe it's also a good idea to start looking into Google Fi.
I have a Google Fi invite that I am pretty sure I can give away if anyone wants it.
As far as the International s7, they are about the same problems as we do, with Qualcomm's secure chain-of-trust and whatnot... They aren't in a better boat, not by much at any rate.
If you want the Moto Nexus 6, Costco has it for a penny on a two year contract.
I used to love modding my phone. I have t had to with my g4. It has M. It has the latest features I want. It has great performance I don't need to push a ROM to optimize anything. Root was nice but I find I haven't really needed that either as cracked apks are available.
Good point.
In my case I'd prefer to have Borg/SkyNet/google completely out of my phone - so a generic load won't do & Apple isn't an option either.
It's pretty pitiful that no one will make an affordable privacy-respecting phone for use in the USA.

I especially liked the iPhone X and LG V30 comparisons about 8 minutes in.
By the way this video is an "extended" version of this Forbes article:
The LG V30 Is As Underrated As The iPhone X Is Overrated
https://www.forbes.com/sites/bensin...ed-as-the-iphone-x-is-overrated/#7c3addc72028
He's just more colorful -- with a some cursing (against obviously biased tech reviewers) -- in the video. So for those who don't have time for 14 minute video, read the article first. If you like it, you can watch the video. Especially towards the end of the video he ably demonstrated how the LG V30 unlocks better, faster than the Samsung Note 8. You can't "show" that in an article.
The main point is he actually has ALL these phones himself and uses them everyday. He's not some dilettante reviewer who just uses an Android phone for a few hours to write an article, then blindly goes back to their iPhone flock with the other iSheep.

IMHO knock code is the most brilliant innovation by LG, and (surprisingly) it's not available on any other phones, been using it since G3 and can't live without it on a daily driver - it's just so convenient. A little complaint though is starting from lollipop LG has required the code to be at least 6 taps instead of 3.

AFAIK, they are different. On HTC you can tap the screen twice to wake up the phone then enter the unlock code to unlock it. On LG you can enter the knock code when the screen is off then immediately unlock the phone.
LOL...this video rant is so true. Brooklyn frat bros....Samsung software just as bad as LG's in comparison to Vanilla Android. HA HA HA. also the apple fanboy comment. HA HA
YES, so true.

It's hilarious because I blew my JUMP and down payment on the V30 to get the V30+ because I wanted a black one. Now I use a case to cover it 99.9% of the time.
I still think double the storage and headphones were worth it though.
I just think next time I need to be patient. If I'd waited one month, I'd have gotten the one I wanted originally.

Double storage is great. That's part of the reason I stopped waiting on the unlocked. I'll keep this 30+ though as it's the free one, so I'd rather have the black one since I'm keeping it. If I had planned on jumping one I had through jump, color wouldn't matter too much though. The good thing on my end, when I jump my other, I still have a whole set of accessories that was never used. I have so many USB C cables now just from the s8 and s8+'s I've jumped and BOGO'D. ??

But I had to buy one by December 2, to qualify for the $400 gift card. And all that's available of the 64GB unlocked version. Now if LG will just release the LG V30+ US998 in the next month.

If root and whatnot gets devs onboard and the price drops cheap enough, I may grab a V30+ unlocked version. This one is doing pretty good though. I only really need 1 app that requires root and I can run that on my S3.
It would just be nice to perform those tasks on the go. ?

It's not that he looks like you, but rather his face is overall similar as yours. Keep in mind the phone isn't looking for your face specifically, but rather one that overall looks like a 2D image it takes. This isn't like Iris scanning on other Galaxy phone's or the Iphone's 3D facial recognition...
If you read the notes when setting up facial recognition you should have seen that it is considered and labeled on the phone as a "less secure" method. Specifically that if someone looks like you they may be able to unlock the phone. It also states things like jewelry/facial hair/glasses/heavy makeup can cause recognition issues.

They do, but keep in mind the phone is only as secure as the owner who is responsible for it.
Why not use the fingerprint sensor instead and solve the problem your having? Personally I find the fingerprint scanner to be quite easy to use.

I also use the fingerprint sensor , but because of my screen protector sometimes it doesn't work good. I will find a new screen protector. and this is what you get for splashing out over a $1000 on a device..... samsung removed more secure systems in favour of less secure ones and call it "innovations"...... classic. .
There are several Youtube videos demonstrating how easy it is for someone else to access the device using just an image. .. i think the earlier people realise that 90% of these so called innovations are just marketing gimmicks robbing people of functionality and productivity on existing devices, the better for everyone.... ... guess another reason some of us will not be upgrading ... hardware or software....

Security on Samsung Fold

Hi All,
i am not sure if anyone faced this issue, i can open my fold with any finger scan but i registered only one. also my son can open the device via face scan.( we have very similar look ) this happening from before and after new update.
2000$ and very low security. do let me know if any one has this issues otherwise i need to start fight with Samsung
thank you
unfortunately it seems as if you're in the grouping of people who never looked into this properly.
it seems like you're trying to compare the android face unlock with apple's 3D face scan.
the android face unlock has never been secure since it came out ages ago, in android ice cream sandwich if i recall correctly.
very few android devices utilize an ir projector like the iphone's face id which maps out a 3D object.
the fold's front cameras (both folded and unfolded) do not use this ir projector, therefore you will never have the same result and/or security.
i personally do not have an issue with this as it is rather well known. i have no problem using the fingerprint sensor.
also, i saw spending $2000 usd as spending $2000 on new technology.
