Hello,
my Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact screen randomly started to flicker. Sometimes it wears of and behaves completely normal for a day but most of the time, it's doing this and the phone screen is unreadable.
There is no problem with touch screen functions.
I tried to access recovery mode, but failed because of conflicting instructions all over the internet.
I wanted to include a recording of the flicker but this forum doesn't allow me to post links... sigh. If anyone wants to get a look I hope I can at least send the link to PM.
Did anyone else encountered this problem? Is it solvable? Is it a hardware or a software error?
Thanks for answers!
Sam

Hello,
I am wondering if there is an app that will begin capturing front facing video or screen shots when my phone is unlocked from the lock screen. For example, I leave the room and suspect others of snooping on my phone while I am gone. Please no comments on "just take your phone with you" because that will not help me determine what I need to.
Thank you.

Is anyone else having problems with media link since the lollipop update?
Mine wont go into landscape mode, it stays portrait. Also it is acting like a screen mirror, ie I cant stream a file then do other stuff on my phone for example check, texts, emails.
is anyone else experiencing similar?

Yes, I am. Ever since I updated my m8 to lollipop, the media link has become useless. Video files are no longer buffered by the media link and then played perfectly on screen. Now I get same as you, just the phone being mirrored on screen so I get a low res picture that stutters constantly. It's unwatchable.
I had to get my old One X out the drawer which works perfectly with the media link.
I can't find any more info about the issue online. Will need a fix soon or at least a way to uninstall lollipop so I can go back to having a phone that works again. Thanks Google!
same here on my M8 after upgrading yesterday......
I got on to live chat with htc. Initially they were claiming the device was behaving normally. Then they disappeared to speak to a senior to find an answer, only to reveal that they had never heard of this problem before and don't have a solution to it nor do they know when they'll have one.
It may be worth everyone who is experiencing this problem to get on to htc so that they'll provide fix.
I've been having this problem since updating to lollipop and spoke on the phone with htc who told me that there would be a update within 5 days to fix the problem, that was about 11 days ago, I'm getting back on to them tomorrow and I'll let you know what they are saying
I've been back on the phone to htc and they said they tried a update but it failed and we have just got to wait, no help at all, they did however offer to book my phone in for a repair but they don't have a solution to the problem so how are they going to fix it, i declined, I'll keep you posted
Any updates or solutions to this problem?
No, every time i call Htc all i get is were working on a fix, just keep calling them
So I've been having this problem ever since I got the phone and it's getting really irritating. Regardless of what app I'm using it would randomly show a black screen or sometimes the page would disappear and reappear and anything that was playing would reset.
Would appreciate any sort of help I can get in this. Is this a software or hardware issue? What are steps that can help resolve this if any?

Hi,
So I offer this phone to my wife this xmas and everything was going smooth until we found this issue:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYFdyDwuS_w
The bottom screen does this flickering when typing with Swiftkey keyboard on some apps. This one is Doggcatcher but it happens on other apps too.
If I swap to GBoard it does not happen. We're on Android Pie 9.0.
Has anyone found this issue?
Seems like a graphic bug in that specific keyboard.
Please, i need help.
Evaluate for yourself whether it is related to this topic.
Occasionally, graphical glitches appear on my Mi A2 lite, (4/64, Android Pie, December update, locked bootloader, no root, intact system).
In most cases, they flickering all over the screen, and in some other cases they are frozen, as is shown in attachment.
They are completely random and they appear through many applications that i use.
I can not determine the cause.
Does anyone else have a similar problem?
me... on chrome and all app that use webview... during call status bar is flickering... when switch to the camera in whatsapp with swipe to set status... and other
Something similar here, if Facebook Messenger chat head is overlaying YouTube it flickers a lot (only the actual video but the description and recommend are always working without flicker also no problems in fullscreen), less often it happens with Chrome and sometimes YouTube does it without Facebook Messenger even being open (Android Pie Dec. 5) [also it didn't happen for the first few weeks with 8.1 then Pie got released and worked well for some days then this started to happen]
I have that problem , the notification bar flickers a lot and when on video calls, it shows a black flickering rectangle at the bottom of the screen
Hi, I've got the same problem here. For me, the flickering appears when the keyboard is open, and get faster while typing, please does someone know how to fix that?

It is true that it is the keyboard, my keyboard developer is fixing the bug making it do that as we speak but in my case the whole screen flashes black instead of the little box you have
The problem with the flickering screen in some apps like Youtube, Chrome or Instagram can be fixed as follows:
Go to Developer Options and activate "disable hw overlays"
However, the setting must be set again after every Phone restart.

Isn't that bad long term?
"Without a hardware overlay every application that is displaying things on the screen will share video memory and will have to constantly check for collision and clipping to render a proper image, this can cost a lot of processing power. With a hardware overlay each application gets its own portion of video memory, getting rid of the need to check for collision and clipping."

Hi, anyone has this issue with pixel 6 pro. It only happens on video from YouTube and very intermittent. Does not happen to the same video. Have not seen it in full screen or on other apps. Very strange bug or is it hardware issue in which case I should get a replacement

I'd suggest to use safemode and see if it still pops up then, in that case I'd contact Google. Of course you could always try a factory reset, but that's a heckload of trouble and wasted hours...

The hard part is that it happens only once a day or so that I struggle to capture it. So I'd probably have to run on safe mode for a long while, I'll see if I can get Google to replace. Cheers
I've never had that, I'd RMA that if I were you!

I definitely had that happen last week when I was watching Youtube! This was after a factory reset too so I wasn't sure what was happening. Same exact thing, lines flashed across the screen just like yours. I have not seen it happen since or perhaps I haven't been watching enough videos on the phone since.
Have you contacted support, and what did they say? I'm kind of scared to contact them with all the outsourcing now and other stories I've been seeing about them not being as helpful as they used to be.

I'm not sure but am wondering the same thing. I was not able to get a hold of Google support but will try after the new year. If the OP can see it happening randomly I bet it is happening randomly for us too but we haven't caught it again. It looks like those old CRT TV's. I unfortunately was not able to get screen recorder open in time to capture when it was happening.

There is no need to record your screen. you can send google the op recording
I hope google will fix this phone.. I guess that is what you get for being a Tensor early adopter.
I just had this happen too for the first time, happened to quickly to get any recording of it. Also on YouTube as I was adding a video to my watch later. Are you using Vanced by any chance? Maybe it's just the software glitch with that?! Hope there's no hardware fault going on here...

I am using the regular Youtube app since I pay for premium. I don't think its related to any app as the OP said it also happened on other videos.
Also have this happen to me somewhat often (once or twice a day), but it's only ever in the youtube app. I'm using the YouTube vanced app and It's never happened in any other app.

Interesting.....let's hope a fix is on it's way at some point...
Have you guys noticed a graphical glitch in Google photos? When in landscape and the video is paused and you scroll up from the bottom of the screen for your settings, a glitch appears!
It was first mentioned in Reddit.
I've had the same thing, but it appears at the bottom of the screen (it's happened a few times, maybe 5 or 6) - and for mine it was about an inch high. It was really odd - never seen a glitch like that before. usually you can tell if it's the display or software but this was very similar to op's - and it stayed for like 10 seconds. using Brave Browser, not watching a video (pixel 6 pro on december build)
YES YES YES! Thank you for the post, OP!
This wasn't an issue till about five days ago and it only occurs in the YouTube application! It's difficult to reproduce, but usually having a video running, opening the comments section then successively minimizing and maximizing the video (in Portrait mode) can trigger this error.
I suspect it has something to do with a change in refresh rate, since this particular change causes just that.
It's not annoying to the point I have considered turning the phone back, but it's mildly concerning especially since the first time it occurs, you're unsure whether it's a hardware or software issue.
Same here with YouTube Vanced in the exact same Spot, never seen in another app
Try newpipe instead. Hint: no ads
