Does camera lens protector affect images quality? - Sony Xperia 5 II Accessories

Thinking of getting a camera lens protector to protect it from scratches but worried it will affect the image quality. Any comments?

It sucks up 5% of the light, but the quality itself is not affected.

Might have some light reflections in your pictures when you use a cheap one.

No reflections at all here...

where did you get the camera lens from man? Looking forward to buying one for me Xperia 5 too!

Am I missing something, isn't the lens already covered in Gorilla glass 6?
As long as your case lifts the lens off the surface when you put it down, you shouldn't need an extra cover.
Any extra layer over the lens is going to degrade picture quality.

I tested one and found it introduces both glare and tends to diminish clarity. I would recommend against putting one on.
This is also similar to tempered glass or hydrogel front screen protectors. The front camera is so poor IMHO that it needs as much light as possible and nothing to dimish clarity.

Yeap, anytime you add optic elements like this you degrade the performance.
Almost all smartphone cams have built in lens protectors. That piece of glass or plastic isn't the lense, it's the protector!
Get a good case with a raised guard around the cam module and it will be fine.
Replacements aren't that expensive anyway.

Thanks for the inputs. Previously, my old xperia z's lens got covered in scratches during one my trip overseas. But eventually I managed to rub off the entire coating hence removing the scratches. That's why i started looking into lens protector.

screen protector for the camera lens?

I know it sound stupid, but the camera lens does stick out. Is there anything out there that can protect it from getting scratch up?
Typically screen protectors have holes in them for the cameras.
With that said, I am not aware of any. Once i get a case for the device, I am hoping that will extend just a hair past the camera so that it is recessed.
About 99% sure there won't be any. No one wants a film over the lens. Well , mostly no one. Present company excluded.
I have used bestskinsever.com full body on my G1. Covers the camera lens, it does not affect the quality of the camera.
Well the phone does not SIT ON THE LENS....It does sit on the ring around the lens... so we should be fine
looking at mine the lense seems to protrude form the ring.
i found camera phone lense protectors at a store called daiso near my house. only $1.50

Yes, it does...look closely.
Just get either the Body Glove case or Seidio Innocase II and that will fix the camera lens problem. The lens now won't be exposed.
Martin fields screen protectors used to have little pieces they include with their screen protectors for exposed camera surfaces...i dunno if they're gonna make a screen protector for the Evo though
I make my own lense protector.
1. Trace outline
2. Put over extra screen protector from a 5 pack and cut.

Camera lens protector

Hi XDA members,
A month ago I ordered this one to protect the camera lens. The lens protector is made from plastic, so it become scratched very fast. Does somebody know a alternative, possibly made from Gorilla Glass?
My Xperia Z had a lot of scratches on the lens, so the quality of my photos become worse. That is the reason for my question.
Greetings

I can live with that, that's better than a permanent damage on the camera lens.
Martin Fields Screen protectors come with a camera lens protector made from the same hard wearing substance that the screen protectors are made from. I highly recommend Martin Fields products.

Rear Camera Lens Protection

Any good ideas / products to protect the read lens? I always end up scratching them so then the camera is useless.
Tried cutting a small circle from the plastic that comes with the phone but it was rubbish.

The lenses are usually simple to replace. I know a lot of them just you tape/glue to stick them on and can by pried off and replaced. I did it on an S4 I bought that was abused. You're only option for protection would be a screen protector cut up, but I can't imagine it holding up for more than a few days if you are able to f up the glass lens so easily.

I got a whole bunch of various sized lense protectors when I bought my Nilkin glass screen protector off ebay. Enough to cover the lense and flash along with various sized spares.

You cut the tempered glass?

is the lens quartz or glass? apple uses quartz and its pretty unscratchable.

Camera lens (screen) protector

Anyone use one?
Any recommendation?
Oh I wish I knew of one too. That's my only concern about not using a case. The lens glass can scratch somewhat easily.

Why not make one? I just put a Skinomi screen protector on my wife's Apple watch. It'd be super easy to use an exacto knife and cut one to fit. Don't know how clear it'd be though, you'd have to test it.
While anything can be scratched, any screen protector is going to scratch easier than the lens glass. The lens is likely sapphire which is about as scratch resistant as you can get (9 out of 10 on the mohs hardness scale). Don't confuse that rating with the ratings that screen protector guys use. They are usually using pencil hardness, NOT mohs hardness. It can be scratched of course but should take a lot to do it. In my last 10 years of owning smartphones I've never scratched a camera lens and rarely use a case.

camera lenses in smartphones are not sapphire. Watch jerryrigeverything, even Apple's "Sapphire" lens cover scratches at a 7 on the mohs scale.
Best bet I think at the moment is to use a case that means the lens is recessed a bit so less prone to touching. This link is focused (sorry about the pun) on DSLR lenses, but may give you comfort that small damage isn't so bad:
https://www.google.nl/search?q=camera+lens+scratch+effect&oq=camera+lens+scratch+effect
Worst I think would be an over aggressive/poor cleaning approach or getting something on the lens which would leave it permanently 'cloudy' with scratches or some other material deposited on it. Bottom line for any lens, as a photographer will tell you - don't "clean" it with a t-shirt, blowing on it, etc., etc. If it really needs cleaning invest in the kind of cleaners/kit sold for cleaning camera lenses and follow the instructions
And on the subject of lens "protectors", this is a subject of debate amongst photographers - who typically use screw on filters for their DSLRs to do that job. Some swear by them. Others say they reduce contrast, cause unnecessary reflections in difficult lighting conditions and that a knock that's bad enough to break the filter will have shards of filter damaging the lens underneath it's supposed to protect anyway.

Tempered glass screen protector (size)

I've had 2 different screen protectors now from differing suppliers on eBay.
The protectors themselves I'm happy with, but both are probably at least 5mm too small (height and width), although they are advertised as for the Pixel 5.
Eg. If I line the protector up pretty much to the top of the screen, then the bottom will line up where the swipe up white line is at the bottom of the screen, so at least 5 or 6mm short in my opinion.
Is anyone else on here using a tempered glass protector, and how are you finding the fit?
Can anyone recommend one that actually covers more of the screen?
Cheers
I have the spigen alignmaster for a day now and it fits nearly perfect, just about 0,5mm too small in every direction
Way back in October i bought a set of screen protectors for my Pixel 5 and all 3 in the pack ended up in the bin. Bubbles galore and badly aligned camera cut outs.
Yesterday i fitted a Spigen one and it went on perfect with the protector fitting up to the start of the bezels , very happy with it indeed.
Hope the spigen protectors will come back in stock

Do you have any pics to show what it looks like? I have a cheap Amazon glass screen protector which has around a 2mm gap around which I'm happy with. If the Spigen covers more of the screen I will get that instead.
Looking at the pictures though it seems the Spigen doesn't have a selfie camera cutout? It seems if the selfie camera is covered it has a pretty big impact on the quality of the pics.
Edit: Actually looking at some Youtube videos, it covers only the display part and not the bezel, like most of the screen protectors so I'll be sticking with mine.

I took some outstanding selfies with the Spigen protector on yesterday, it doesn't affect the quality.
Also, having come from a protector with a cutout, I prefer it being covered because now there isn't a dust trap around the camera due to the protector edge.

The bezel has a slight curve though so the screen protector would be lifted up and you wouldn't get a perfect seal.
I'm with Stringy on the cut out as well it is better not to have one, the ones i tried did not sit perfectly around the camera, they were always slightly off centre and it quickly trapped dust.

anyone else having issues with the proximity sensor with the spigen tempered glass? i've noticed sometimes the AOD switches off and the screen won't turn on after a call when the phone is away from my head
only a reboot fixes it.

I have not noticed anything untoward personally, the phone appears to work as it should.

Weirdly i thought it improved call quality, it gave the call audio a bit of depth and seems to have removed some of the tinniness.
Anyone use LK glasses from Amazon? I bought a pack of three and I would like to know how good they are; Are they cover usable screen?
Edit: Received them today. Very good tempered glass, good quality (not the best) very easy to install with the plastic tool, no problem with the camera hole. Fits perfectly.
