Similar to this or a shine effect only around camera or tens of other styles can be used to indicate an event such as charging, music playing or a notification to help you to know even who texted you just by a glance far from your phone.
some of you may know this app before and some may had struggled with it in its bad moment with a broken version but it did not stop improving and all got fixed and many more feature added.
Because this app has tons of options to customize your phone, even wallpapers, I will start by writing instructions for how to enable the basic options of the feature which this thread is about:
How To:
1- Search google play "AOE" or "Always On Edge" and install this ~6MB App
2- Enter section #1 "Main Settings"
choose if you want the LED effect to be shown within System Ambient Display or a separated screen
3- enable accessibility services and give required permissions
4- Go back and enter section #2 "App settings"
for when to light choose "when a notification comes" and/or charging lighting as you like
5- scroll to bottom and save.
6- Enter enabled apps section and make sure the app you will test with is enabled
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.used.aoe
Please give the app some time only once and then you will not need to even open it:
After testing please discover all sections the app can do what ever you need for such feature
like at the same place of step 4 you can enable Mixer which show all current notifications colors
and Reminder which repeat lighting every X seconds and let other options you may like.
in lighting settings section you can customize the general style of lighting.
the app is indeed complicated due to variety of options and I'm always working on improving it.
Battery Drain:
I use it personally for notifications only, all apps, while screen is on and off, reminder for 5 seconds every 5 seconds limited to 30 repeat and I got 100s of emails and messages and the app is not even on system battery use list. but in general this app can be used with no noticeable difference in battery usage and it can drain your battery in few hours. it depends on the options you choose, there are a lot of options to minimize battery consuming it basically depends on lighting time and enabled widgets.
in worst cases there is options to prevent the app from working if device is not charging and other 10s of options so you can set when the app should not light as when the app should light.
App brief description:
AOE contain a lot of features and options and all can be customized as you like, here is some of the main features:
Edge lighting can also be customized for charging, music, wallpaper and many other events
It can be customized to work in a highly flexible way with AOD clock or independently, or even both like Tap to Light feature.
Lighting can be around all screen or around front camera or both with many other lighting place options like LED style with variety of animations.
You can use it to show lighting effects for many events like notifications including missed calls of course, charging, fully charged, screen lock, screen unlock, headset plugged, listening to music ,
ongoing or outgoing calls, recent apps menu and flash after unlock.
You can customize lighting color, style, effect and place for each event, each app, each contact name or even each chat group.
Notifications light has more useful additional features like Reminder which the lighting will be repeated every period you choose and you can even choose to make a sound alert for notification reminder,
and Mixer which will iterate through all current notifications colors..
Brightness can be adjusted regardless of the lighting is independent or with Always On Display, on top of that you can set high brightness for lights and low brighting for AOD/clock widgets.
It has many options to restrict its job like prevent the app from lighting if device is charging, not charging, not in landscape mode, low battery, sleep time or to follow Do Not Disturb mode.
with a block list to prevent it from working for someone
AOE also support lighting in all screen states, turned off or turned on, horizontal or vertical.

Pretty cool! I didn't know about this app so thanks for sharing! Anyone else have any cool mods or recommendations for settings?
Awesome. Could you add the settings you use to center it on the hole? I'm getting there but just be nice as a starting point then could adjust thickness to taste . Thanks again! So cool. Takes me to back to OMG! NEXUS HAS A NOTIFICATION LED.

sorry I do not have a pixel but automatic adjustment should be fine initially (is not it?) then click preview and adjust manually a little bit using -+ buttons
Already paid for the Lifetime. This works really well!

This is as close as I could get it to center.
That's seems different from mine. By 10+ on some. I wonder how much the display size setting effect it. Thank you for the starting point.
I managed to use this app but everytime I got a new message after a restart, the app just don't work, does anybody knows a workaround? or it's just me not having a correct config?

Yeah, unfortunately. I just discovered it yesterday so I installed it from here. https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/alrbea-ent/always-on-edge-edge-lighting-/
But I also wanted to unlock all features by buying pro and that seems not to work without PlayStore

Warning! This has been developed and tested on Galaxy Nexus. It should work fine on SIII, but have a backup, just in case something goes wrong (can't imagine what)
Today I got a little bit bored and decide to make this simple app. As the name says, it allows to put the phone in Standby (Lock) with the touch of app's icon. I know that there are many many apps that do this, but maybe in the future I could add other options to it. So far it seems to work fine, I tested it with Jellbro latest nightly and works like a charm. Maybe I am too lazy, but because my phone is on the desk most of the day, I find it not very convenient to press the Power button...

Changelog for version 1.4:
1.4
- added Tasks feature
- on some ROM versions the screen my try to turn itself on again after lock, the app will double check and try to lock it again. Please provide feedback if it still does not work.
- minor graphic tweaks
You can find it on Google Play at: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alinberce.standbytouch
Feel free to give me suggestions . Also a high rating on Google Play would help. Thanks.
I am using the app and haven't got any "wake screen" events. So hopefully works as expected.
I was thinking of a feature:
1. set an interval in seconds, let's say 60
2. set in the app, Enable touch screen to wake
3. in you press the screen on this interval, the phone awakes.
This of course with the cost of battery life....
What do you say, is is useful or not ?
works but not exactly like power button .
screen flashes white for a couple ms
but like the other functions
(just wondering whether you make a setting so you can choose whether or not to put device into deep sleep ) prob stupid function coz u always want ur device to go into deep sleep when screen off
thanks

No flashes for me, screen goes immediately off when i press icon, nice Ui look good also. I made swipe gesture to nova launcher, when i swipe up with 2 fingers, screen goes off.
Thanks.
on uninstalling my phone does not autolock anymore, neither does the screen time out, tried on ics, not happy with that, also with the software it would lock the phone on toggling but however it would not turn the screen off, not pretty happy.
@cletusarrarr I am sorry but I can't understand what you said. The app has nothing to do with screen time out or any other system settings.
May I ask what you use for the circle selector ?
Looks great
Thanks @Tolriq... the circle ideas came to me sudden and I've made it from scratch. There is no control I've used. Basically there are 2 custom views, a smaller one with the hour circle and a bigger one with the minutes circles, with some touch and rotation events. Glad you like it, I haven't seen anything like it in any other app. Somehow I think that there are still tweaks to be made, maybe, sometimes it's easy to go wrong by pressing unintentionally on the other one.
Thx! 5 star given!
But still sometimes the screen come back briefly b4 it locks again. I read comments in screen off fx that it doesn't hv this problem on s3. Maybe u can check it out if u hv time. Meanwhile I really enjoy ur work coz the design of the icon is so cool!

I have encountered this screen shown in some ROMs, in another it didn't appear (this on my Galaxy Nexus). The app only accesses a standard android function to lock the screen, without any bells and whistles. I could not find why it was happening like that, so I just try to make a relock after half of a second (just in case the screen turns on).
Thank you very much for your kind workds.
It's perfect. Love the simplicity of the icon.

Thanks a lot. If you guys have any ideas for features, please let me know.
I've just released a new version in the market. Unfortunatelly it does not have new features as I've been really busy in the last few months but includes two important things:
- there is no more white screen + app's icon when pressing the app's icon, just before the screen shuts down
- I added compatibility with JB 4.2
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alinberce.standbytouch
I have also released a refreshed version of my babies app, I'd love to hear some feedback from those of you who have small babies (1 to 3 years old):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34258314#post34258314
Hi guys,
I have released a new version of the app. I have removed the Tasks feature as it wasn't too helpful and added Sleep Mode. So basically, the Sleep Mode shows for a brief moment (the time you set in Settings) 2 icons which allows you to switch off Sound/Wi-Fi/Data.
Here is how it works:
1. Go to Settings -> Zzzzzz Mode -> Set the interval in hours when you want the icons to be displayed. Set the milliseconds to be displayed and check the toggles you want to disable
2. Next time you press the StandBy icon you will see 2 icons on the screen. The moon icon puts the phone to standby and toggles off the checked things from settings. The sun icon, simply turns them on again and closes, without going into standby.
Any feedback is gladly received.
I just applied the Android 5.0.1 update (from 4.4.4) to my AT&T Note 4 this weekend. So far, I'm pretty happy with the results. The UI is MUCH faster, which I appreciate during every interaction with the phone - thank you to Google/Samsung/AT&T for this. Otherwise, still some missing features, and lots of change for change's sake.
In the latter category, I include the new lock screen notifications. Before anyone sparks up their flamethrower, I concede that this is just my opinion; maybe notifications are better than sliced bread for others. In either case, there is a functional issue that I have not been able to resolve. Specifically, I do not seem to have an option for controlling whether notifications from any given app are considered sensitive or not.
For context, I use my phone primarily as a media player. I use three primary apps (Public Radio & Podcast, BeyondPod, and PlayerPro), and rely heavily on their various lock screen controls. If memory serves, Android has changed several times over the years with respect to how it handles media player controls on the lock screen. One way or another, though, there's always been some sort of solution. Now, one app (BeyondPod) always shows its controls as a notification on the lock screen, another (Public Radio & Podcast) never shows its controls on the lock screen, and the third (PlayerPro) has two lock screen related options in its settings, one of which works and the other that does not.
I have my lock screen notifications set to "Hide sensitive content" (Settings > Sounds and notifications > While locked). Most importantly, I don't want my SMS/email/etc. showing up on the lock screen, so I can't use the most liberal "Show all content" option. But, it seems that lollipop wants to use notifications for media player controls, so I can't use the most restrictive "Do not show notifications" option. I think that the "Hide sensitive content" option is probably the one that fits my need - except for the fact that I can't figure out how to mark my media players' notifications as non-sensitive.
I've read a few articles on lock screen notifications that include screenshots that show an option for marking individual apps as sensitive or non-sensitive. For example, look at the example for the Messenger app about two-thirds of the way down the page on this article. Observe that there are three configuration options:
Block
Priority
Sensitive
On my device, I only have options for "Block" and "Set as priority" - no sensitivity option. The OS/apps seem to have self-determined which notifications are considered sensitive and which are not. Unfortunately, two sets of my media controls are flagged as sensitive, so no access to them on the lock screen. My question is:
QUESTION: How can I mark an app's notifications as non-sensitive, such that they'll show up on the lock screen?
I'll take some screenshots and post them in a follow-up post. Thanks in advance!
Screenshots
Here are two screenshots to show the issue. I never thought I'd use the S-pen "Screen write" option, but it came in handy here (assuming you can read my terrible handwriting)!
The first shot shows the lock screen with all three media players' controls - or lack thereof:

}
The second shot shows the "Application notifications" configuration screen for the Public Radio & Podcast app. From other articles, I think that the "Sensitive" option is missing from my phone:
Sorry for the huge images. I'm not sure how to make them smaller.
In order to for the ability to set an app as "sensitive", you have to enable all notifications on your lockscreen. Then go to those specific apps you want to set as sensitive so their notifications don't show your SMS or e-mails or whatever you want hidden. Seems awkward, but I had the same issue. Set my lockscreen to hide sensitive notification, only to have it make all notifications sensitive, and the option to apply per-app as sensitive disappeared. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the info, and for getting this on the record for posterity. I stumbled across this a few weeks ago, but forgot to post an update.
I agree that this is "awkward" - and even backward. It seems like apps shouldn't show their notifications on the lock screen unless the user explicitly allows them to do so. Having to manually disable notifications for each new, potentially sensitive app is dangerous, especially in the context of a device where the owner has already chosen to use a lock screen password of some sort. Having email/SMS/etc. notifications display on the locked screen by default defeats at least some of the protection ostensibly offered by the lock screen.
Anyway, just out of curiosity, have you figured out:
Q1: The use case for the "Hide sensitive content" option?
Q2: How apps are deemed to be (or set as) sensitive/not-sensitive with respect to "Hide sensitive content"?
I think Google is on the right track with the lock screen notifications, but isn't there yet. At least my understanding of how they intend them to be used isn't there yet.

Normally not, but Samsung will on messages app for example
Any chance you could add functionality for use as a battery indicator?
Does notification light blink constantly like on the note 9 and older until the notification is cleared? I'm not exactly sure on how to set this up.
nice app, but dont like the edge lightning on note 8, is a little over edge
P.S.

I also noticed this when I was setting it up but all seems to be OK now with the ring light.
One thing I am seeing is a white dot flashing to the right of the camera cut out
My ring light still shows only the bottom bit.
Can u share settings?
That white dot could be the proximity sensor. Try covering it. The screen might go off. If it does, it's the sensor like on the S10.

erm, as for the settings....it will take me forever to go through and type it all out ha ha

how do you set this up because i cannot get this to work ?
Which phones do you use? Standard Note10 or Note10+ ?
All phone updates installed?
Are there any alternatives to this app that do the same job?

Yes, still adjusting a little fore note 10. When i have a final release ill readd.

this is great, was looking for something like this after seeing the Note 10+ didn't have a notification LED, it's such an important feature when you want to leave your phone on a table and see notifications or if its charged as you walk past or from across the room.
will definately be using this when my Note 10+ comes.

It's perfectly located when the screen is on. I'm also a software developer and I spent a little while playing around with an opensource version of a similar app (Holey Light). I think the issue is that the AOD doesn't stretch to the edge of the device on the Note 10/10+ like it does on the S10; it cuts off at the front camera. Hopefully there's a way to bypass that.
So far I love this. Great feature.
Can this support battery % also? Energy ring still hasnt made it correctly for note 10+
Set it up now just waiting for a text to see the notification. Thanks for this

OPAodMod is an Xposed module that provides OnePlus devices on OxygenOS and HydrogenOS with an always on display like that on the Pixels (and other devices). It's existed for a while, but in the last few months stopped working due to the main developer (RetroX) moving on to another device. I picked it up, and after initially providing modded versions with only fixes and simple additions, was kindly given access to the full source code. OPAodMod has now been fully translated, with a new GUI which is easier to use.
Features:
Always on display, which runs all the time - unlike the OnePlus version
Customisable layout, with options including seven themes, including Pixel and OnePlus (OnePlus supports all the system clock styles too), and a DVD screensaver (it's exactly what you think it is)
Notification display, showing the text of a notification when you receive it and dropping back to just an icon after a few seconds
Live music lyrics on supported themes
Battery Optimisation options such as forcing doze and setting the refresh rate to 60Hz when the AoD is showing
Option to only display when you 'raise' your phone
Option to hide the screen when flipped/in your pocket, disable it overnight, or after a time period (10 minutes or 15 seconds)
Show your next alarm, current weather, and currently playing music
Display a short message (like that on your lockscreen)
Full settings GUI for the module with a live preview of your clock
Quick Settings toggle to enable/disable the AoD
Support for Ambient Music Mod for displaying ambient Now Playing tracks on the AoD

Thanks! Just to confirm, this has burn-in protection implemented? Any idea on the impact in the battery life?

Yes, this has burn in protection. The battery life does take a noticeable hit, I'm looking at ways to mitigate it better.

Thanks for confirming! I'll try it out. Looking forward to more features and optimizations.
This is awesome!
Just installed it now and it works AMAZING!
One thing I really wish it had is the Fingerprint unlock option on the AoD, but i'm guessing it might be a bit more work.
Is there a way I can participate in the development of the module?

Fingerprint works on the AoD. Chances are because you've just rebooted, it's falling back to the PIN. When it works from the lockscreen, it'll work on the AoD.
Unfortunately while I was given access to the source code privately, it's still not open source so there's no public development access.

I just noticed that the FP does indeed work, but the FP icon is not showing for some reason.
I'm on OP7TP McLaren if that helps.
It does show up on the lockscreen, though.

That's kind of intentional, though I would like to add an option to make it show an indication of where the sensor is. It's more minimal without it though.

Yes, it's minimalistic-looking without it, but it would be nice to have it toggleable
If I remember correctly, in RetroX's version it was impossible to hide notification text for apps that weren't China-specific. Is that still the case?

There's a short list of apps that are hidden with the toggle enabled:
I'll probably add a GUI to edit them at some point, but might just add some package names to the list before that.

Thanks for the info! Also, I don't know if it's technically possible, but consider following the system settings for hiding sensitive content on the lockscreen instead of a separate GUI/toggle. I currently have that enabled for messaging and mail apps and it works on the OnePlus ambient display as well.

It would be possible, but I'd prefer to leave it as a separate toggle for now. I'll maybe change it to default to match the system when I add the GUI to pick apps though.
Hi! I love the module, well done! I think it would be cool if you could also add a quicksettings toggle which makes it possible to easily turn the AOD on and off.
Just wanted to confirm, this is for rooted devices only? No way to get this without rooting? Great work, nonetheless.
New bugfix release, version 3.0.1b
Fixes:
- No longer shows 'null' for twelve on word clock
- Added translations for charging states
- Added the following apps as sensitive apps:
-> OnePlus SMS
-> OnePlus Phone
-> Google Phone
-> Google Messages
-> WhatsApp
-> Facebook Messenger
-> Facebook
-> Telegram
-> Instagram
-> Snapchat
-> Discord
-> Twitter
-> VK
-> Сбербанк Онлайн
-> Raiffeisen Online Russia
An app picker will be added later, this is just a stopgap.
Download is attached and also attached to first post

Not possible without root, no.
thanks for this app. Unfortunately couldnt get the "AOD only when phone is raised" option to work on 7T. stays on all the time. Would be nice if it could work on 7T as well! thanks
Hey guys,
I'm so glad to have come across this mod. I've been using this mod on my OnePlus 6 since a couple of hours. I can already say it consumes lesser power than the AOD on custom ROMs.
Thanks a lot!
Sohail
This is great, will there be a slider to change display brightness? Or maybe a way to shut off a checkerboard of pixels to reduce the effective brightness?
