[Q] How to set app's notification sensitivity for lock screen - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4

I just applied the Android 5.0.1 update (from 4.4.4) to my AT&T Note 4 this weekend. So far, I'm pretty happy with the results. The UI is MUCH faster, which I appreciate during every interaction with the phone - thank you to Google/Samsung/AT&T for this. Otherwise, still some missing features, and lots of change for change's sake.
In the latter category, I include the new lock screen notifications. Before anyone sparks up their flamethrower, I concede that this is just my opinion; maybe notifications are better than sliced bread for others. In either case, there is a functional issue that I have not been able to resolve. Specifically, I do not seem to have an option for controlling whether notifications from any given app are considered sensitive or not.
For context, I use my phone primarily as a media player. I use three primary apps (Public Radio & Podcast, BeyondPod, and PlayerPro), and rely heavily on their various lock screen controls. If memory serves, Android has changed several times over the years with respect to how it handles media player controls on the lock screen. One way or another, though, there's always been some sort of solution. Now, one app (BeyondPod) always shows its controls as a notification on the lock screen, another (Public Radio & Podcast) never shows its controls on the lock screen, and the third (PlayerPro) has two lock screen related options in its settings, one of which works and the other that does not.
I have my lock screen notifications set to "Hide sensitive content" (Settings > Sounds and notifications > While locked). Most importantly, I don't want my SMS/email/etc. showing up on the lock screen, so I can't use the most liberal "Show all content" option. But, it seems that lollipop wants to use notifications for media player controls, so I can't use the most restrictive "Do not show notifications" option. I think that the "Hide sensitive content" option is probably the one that fits my need - except for the fact that I can't figure out how to mark my media players' notifications as non-sensitive.
I've read a few articles on lock screen notifications that include screenshots that show an option for marking individual apps as sensitive or non-sensitive. For example, look at the example for the Messenger app about two-thirds of the way down the page on this article. Observe that there are three configuration options:
Block
Priority
Sensitive
On my device, I only have options for "Block" and "Set as priority" - no sensitivity option. The OS/apps seem to have self-determined which notifications are considered sensitive and which are not. Unfortunately, two sets of my media controls are flagged as sensitive, so no access to them on the lock screen. My question is:
QUESTION: How can I mark an app's notifications as non-sensitive, such that they'll show up on the lock screen?
I'll take some screenshots and post them in a follow-up post. Thanks in advance!

Screenshots
Here are two screenshots to show the issue. I never thought I'd use the S-pen "Screen write" option, but it came in handy here (assuming you can read my terrible handwriting)!
The first shot shows the lock screen with all three media players' controls - or lack thereof:

}
The second shot shows the "Application notifications" configuration screen for the Public Radio & Podcast app. From other articles, I think that the "Sensitive" option is missing from my phone:
Sorry for the huge images. I'm not sure how to make them smaller.

In order to for the ability to set an app as "sensitive", you have to enable all notifications on your lockscreen. Then go to those specific apps you want to set as sensitive so their notifications don't show your SMS or e-mails or whatever you want hidden. Seems awkward, but I had the same issue. Set my lockscreen to hide sensitive notification, only to have it make all notifications sensitive, and the option to apply per-app as sensitive disappeared. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info, and for getting this on the record for posterity. I stumbled across this a few weeks ago, but forgot to post an update.
I agree that this is "awkward" - and even backward. It seems like apps shouldn't show their notifications on the lock screen unless the user explicitly allows them to do so. Having to manually disable notifications for each new, potentially sensitive app is dangerous, especially in the context of a device where the owner has already chosen to use a lock screen password of some sort. Having email/SMS/etc. notifications display on the locked screen by default defeats at least some of the protection ostensibly offered by the lock screen.
Anyway, just out of curiosity, have you figured out:
Q1: The use case for the "Hide sensitive content" option?
Q2: How apps are deemed to be (or set as) sensitive/not-sensitive with respect to "Hide sensitive content"?
I think Google is on the right track with the lock screen notifications, but isn't there yet. At least my understanding of how they intend them to be used isn't there yet.

[Q] Help with pattern lock delay

I use a pattern lock, but would like to set a delay for it. When I was using Froyo, this was simple:
Settings > Security > Lock phone after and then pick the delay.
If the screen was turned off/on in <15 mins (in my case), I would still get the slider lock, but I wouldn't have to swipe my pattern.
These days I'm using CM7, and I cannot figure out how to achieve the same functionality.
If I go to Settings > Location & Security there is no option to choose a delay: all I can do is enable/disable the pattern lock.
If I go to Settings > CyanogenMod Settings > Lockscreen there are options to set a lock screen delay, but no separate delay for the pattern. So if I choose "immediate" then I have to swipe my pattern lock every time I turn on my screen (which is annoying and time consuming when using the phone in short bursts). If I choose a delay (like 5 mins), then the slider lock is also delayed. Not only does this mean I lose protection from accidental screen use, it means that I lose the lock screen music controls and the ability to skip tracks with the volume buttons while the screen is off.
Can someone please let me know how to achieve what I had in Froyo? I want immediate activation of the slider lock screen, but delayed activation of the pattern lock.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Nothing that I can find in CM7 offers the same functionality:
Anyone?
I thought for sure someone would be along by now with a response like, "I can't believe you missed option XXXXX"
It's hard for me to believe that I found such a simple feature that is actually less functional in CM7 than in older roms.
CM7 has otherwise been such a perfect powerhouse for me.
Well i guess all that can be said is that sometimes you lose features when changing roms that you dont neccisarily want changed. I'm using Incredibly Re-Engineered and I lost my Verizon Backup Assistant which made getting all of my contacts back a pain. Good luck with finding a fix.

Just a tip for future reference, every once and a while just export your contacts to your sd card so you have a backup of them.

I enjoy this same feature, and in all of my ROM testing it seems to be a sense based feature. I have not encountered it on any ROM that was not based on sense. So a CM ROM would not be sense based and therefor not have this feature. I have not looked into apps or other methods to get this feature back when not using a sense based rom.
i made an app which doesn't exactly do what you want, but comes pretty close i think ^^
it deactivates the lockscreen after unlocking and reactivates it some seconds/minutes/hours later again. unfortunately, it doesn't show any slider lock in the meantime (but if you also install the WidgetLocker app you get exactly that!).
maybe you want to give the trial version a try --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=955092 (i really recommend testing the trial version first, the app seems not to work on every device/ROM combination...)
Thanks, but delaying the lockscreen doesn't solve a number of my main functionality concerns. For example, if the rom doesn't consider the lockscreen to be engaged then I can't use the volume keys for music track skipping with the screen off. In fact, so long as the rom doesn't yet consider the screen locked, touching the volume keys at all just brings the screen back on.
I already use WidgetLocker, so if I set the CM7 lockscreen delays (which it sounds like is the same thing that your app does) I still get a lockscreen, but my phone doesn't actually behave like it's locked.
It's just something I guess I'll have to live with. In the meantime I've tried to split the difference by setting different delays for the timeout event and the manual screen off event.
I am also looking for this functionality and I was under an impression that it was a very basic feature. I am really surprised it hasn't been implemented yet.
A code patch is required for this feature
The separate slide lock/security lock is a feature in Froyo Sense but will require a code patch for CM7. I have submitted a patch to CM Gerrit and if it is upvoted/approved it will be merged into a future CM7 release. Because I am a new user here, I am prohibited from providing direct links. "Thanks for understanding!" (as the forum error tells me and I am certain you will be pleased as well)
Here is the relevant feature request for this is on the Google Code CM project site. Comment #11 on that thread describes the fine-grained control that my code patch provides (four distinct settings related to this feature to ensure that users can obtain exactly the behavior they desire):
https://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=2070#c11
My patchsets are in CM Gerrit at review.cyanogenmod.com
Search for 6526 and 6527. These are the framework implementation and the UI controls for the feature. There are also direct links at the bottom of the Google Code thread URL listed above.
Depending on how assiduous you are in the pursuit of this feature, you can use git to cherry-pick these commits into a CM7 build environment and compile a custom CM7 ROM (that's what the code reviewers do). This is not for the faint of heart, but if you are willing to spend several hours setting the dev environment up (or already have it) it's quite an enlightening experience.
Thank you very much for submitting your patches. I see that as of #148 it has been merged!

Separate Timeout for Screen and Security Lock (UI) (android_packages_apps_CMParts)
Separate Timeout for Screen and Security Lock (Framework) (android_frameworks_base)
I can't wait to try it out
Yep, pretty cool. I was just coming back here to edit my post with an update about it. I am rather jazzed because this was my first foray into Android development (why not start with the OS instead of just writing an app?). Hope it accomplishes what you intended.
There is an "Immediately" option in the Slide Delay selection lists which would directly reproduce the behavior of Froyo Sense. An overall toggle for the behavior is also provided so that users don't have to change multiple slide delay timeouts to be greater than/equal to security timeouts in order to disable the feature (feature is toggle disabled by default).
Feature control is in CM Settings -> Lockscreen -> Delay and timeout (surprise!)
My personal config is:
Screen turned off:
Slide lock delay: 1s
Security lock delay: 5m
Screen timeout:
Slide lock delay: 5m
Security lock delay: 10m
My phone typically only times out if it is sitting next to me on the desk; I always power off the screen if I am going to shove it in my pocket.
Yea man, the menus are very intuitive and the feature works great with the native lock screen.
One thing I'm noticing: if I try to use WidgetLocker, the security pattern no longer engages on a separate timer from the lockscreen, no matter how I have CM set.
For example, I've set my slide lock delay to "immediately" and my security lock delay to "5 min." If I'm using the native lock screen, this works perfectly. If I enable WidgetLocker though, the security lock starts engaging based on the slide lock timer. If I disable WidgetLocker, it goes back to performing as it should.
Would you mind testing this on your end? Maybe I just have something configured improperly? Or if you are able to easily see what the interaction might be, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Hm, I don't have WidgetLocker.
The essential concept of my patch was to fire two events on different delays (show slide & show security). If you are seeing the security lockscreen show up as min(slide_delay, security_delay) then it is probable that WidgetLocker has either reconfigured the object that is set as the LockScreen and/or UnlockScreen in the KeyguardView or perhaps fired an additional broadcast event.
I suggest that you contact the WidgetLocker author. That person would be better suited to look into into this: CM7 is open source but WidgetLocker isn't (which means I can't see what the WL code is doing without some intensive disassembly).
Thanks man - I appreciate the info. I had a feeling I'd have to ask the WL dev, but wanted to check with you just in case there was something easily identifiable.

quick toggle concept

you guys
you all know that if we press either volume rocker on our sweet wp7 devices, a bar slides down with volume level and ring/vibrate/silent icon
i think that there's a lot of wasted blank space between those. i know that if you listen to music/radio the play controls jump there, but if you don't, there's nothing much going on over there
do you like the idea to put the quick on/off toggles (wi-fi, cell data, location etc.) in that space? check out the attachment
the icons would of course have to have 2 looks to distinguish if a feature is on/off. furthermore, if you listen to music/radio, there would be a couple of icons in that space and they wouldn't fit in 1 view, so all of them would be scrollable (left/right), e.g. you pause the music, scroll right to toggle bluetooth, scroll left to unpause etc.
and lastly, the user should have the option to decide what toggles he/she would like to display there
p.s. i'm very sorry for crudely using paint but i wanted to share this with you asap, otherwise i'd forget
I got the idea. Already thought about it. Maybe in a custom rom?
these kind of shortcuts should be done by MS, because WP7 is full of tiny features that make huge difference and enormously improve using the OS, i'm surprised they won't be in mango
Yeah, it should. I agree with you, and probably everyone does.
Don't know why MS didnt do it.
Having them at the top with those small icon feels cluttered.
I think I would preffer something like a long swipe to the right on the startscreen and there you have them...
Either it pops out on top of the screen, or moves everything a little bit to the right, like the pictures below.
And since its a togglebar it has autohide.

this is very sweet but i fear that the long swipe would not register 100% of times for everybody, a fool-proof gesture is needed here. here's an idea:
the icons would slide into view after touching anywhere below the little right hand arrow, there's plenty of space there. after toggling sth they would hide themselves after 2 seconds

This one makes great use of the so far wasted space on the right, the os could really do with these as it makes a big difference in the speed of shutting things down.
That is not a good idea since people touch there when they swipe up and down, and also when they swipe to get to the app-list. And its not intuitive and logic to have a press function in the empty black space without a button. Also, we already have the app-list to the right of the screen, its more logic to add new feature to the other side where we dont have anything.
You have to distinguish the action as much as possible so it doesnt confuse users with other actions and features.
We swipe to get the battery-life and reception to show, why not swipe to see the toggles?
i like our little brainstorm you're right, it's not intuitive to tap a blank space, so i guess an additional button under the arrow icon would be a better idea. mango added an additional button on the app list used to search through apps (also under the arrow icon, so the toggle button would be quite consistent)
i know that we use that blank space to slide from the home screen to the app list (i however start sliding from anywhere on my tiles), and when we do that we keep our finger on the screen and move it, so i think this gesture wouldn't be registered as an accidental tap. either way, the additional toggle button i mentioned above solves everything
A button is defenitely better in that case.
Anyway, MS needs to give us something along these lines.
I'm not good at photoshop, but.. it would be nice above the app list. When you slide to your app list, it shows above it the toggles.
Funny, I was just posting these Meego videos in another thread to show the notification system... I could see all the toggles being at the top of the notification page where Meego has the weather.

As for the original post, unfortunately it wouldn't be very intuitive to use the volume rocker to access wifi or Bluetooth.
I would pay $0.99 for that, especially from an xda member.

Default Notification Sound Missing

Hi,
I bought A5 (2017) yesterday (still Android 6.0, theres no update ). I was setting everything as i like (wallpaper, ringtones etc). But when I wanted to set the system wide notification sound, I can only find Message Notification and Calendar Notification settings under Sounds and vibration>Notification Sounds. When I check one of my friends A5 (2016) theres a Default Notification section which my phone lacks. And when I changed Default notification sound on his phone whatsapp recognizes that setting. Theres a default notification choice in Whatsapp which is set to "Grace Note" on my phone, but I dont know where to change it. And I can see that all apps following this setting. Facebook, gmail etc. all using this ringtone.
I'm thinking like this is going to be fixed with 7.0 cause A5(2016) is updated and it has this setting. But I wonder do you guys know something else with this issue (if its an issue ^^ )
Thanks
(PS: This is my first post, i hope its not duplicate. And English is not my native language, so i may have done some grammer mistakes. )

I have a same problem with my A5 2017 Nougat (missing default notification sound problem).
Anyone can help me ? Thanks in advance.
Did you ever find a solution? I have a Galaxy J7 (2016) and the option for default notification sound just suddenly disappeared.
Hello, having the same issue with my S8+. Has anyone found a solution...?
Thanks...
Forgive the book, but hopefully this helps some of you. I realize you folks were originally speaking to a different Galaxy than what I have (samsung galaxy s8) but I found enough similarities in the problems presented, so I figured I would post.
May 2018 I bought a samsung galaxy s8 and I set up all my notifications the way I wanted and at first was happy. Then there came an update, so I did the update. Then I realized that my "Messaging" notification sound was set as the regular system default sound instead of my favorite dewdrop, so I went into the Apps section, selected "Messages/Notifications/General Notifications & New Messages/Sound" and changed it to "dewdrops". For those of you that dont know, you can set the "Importance" for both "General Notifications & New Messages". Originally I had the importance set to "Urgent" for my messages.
...you need to stay with me here...
So after the update, when I would first get a message, the notification would be the default system sound instead of my "dewdrop" sound. After much poking around and looking for where I went wrong, I found a couple of interesting things as well as a bug.
Interesting thing: Like I said, instead of 'dewdrop' when I got a new message, I heard the system default but then after the initial notification, I would hear 'dewdrop' as a reminder that I had a message. Weird. One app giving two different notification sounds eh? Upon further poking, I realized that the initial / first notification is considered an "Urgent system alert" with a high priority, therefore it is using the "default notification sound" instead of the "messenger sound", sOOOoooo I went back into the Apps section, selected "Messages/Notifications/New Messages/General Notifications & New Messages" and changed the "Importance" for both "General Notifications & New Messages" from "Urgent" to "High". Now when I get a new message, I hear my favorite "dewdrops" instead of the system default.
Bug: It appears that when I first got my phone, there was the ability to go into "Settings / Sounds and vibration / Notification sounds" and that you would see three options to set the "Default notification sound", the "Messages notification sound" and the "Calendar notifications" sound. Here is where I originally set all three of these to the system default. Today (after the update) the screen that shows the three settings is now gone and is replaced with one simply sound selection. I no longer have the ability to select individual sounds for "default" "messages" and "calendar". The example shown in this youtube video shows what it USED to look like at marker 00:26 which is now gone, and instead you go right to what is seen at marker 00:34.

Similar to this or a shine effect only around camera or tens of other styles can be used to indicate an event such as charging, music playing or a notification to help you to know even who texted you just by a glance far from your phone.
some of you may know this app before and some may had struggled with it in its bad moment with a broken version but it did not stop improving and all got fixed and many more feature added.
Because this app has tons of options to customize your phone, even wallpapers, I will start by writing instructions for how to enable the basic options of the feature which this thread is about:
How To:
1- Search google play "AOE" or "Always On Edge" and install this ~6MB App
2- Enter section #1 "Main Settings"
choose if you want the LED effect to be shown within System Ambient Display or a separated screen
3- enable accessibility services and give required permissions
4- Go back and enter section #2 "App settings"
for when to light choose "when a notification comes" and/or charging lighting as you like
5- scroll to bottom and save.
6- Enter enabled apps section and make sure the app you will test with is enabled
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.used.aoe
Please give the app some time only once and then you will not need to even open it:
After testing please discover all sections the app can do what ever you need for such feature
like at the same place of step 4 you can enable Mixer which show all current notifications colors
and Reminder which repeat lighting every X seconds and let other options you may like.
in lighting settings section you can customize the general style of lighting.
the app is indeed complicated due to variety of options and I'm always working on improving it.
Battery Drain:
I use it personally for notifications only, all apps, while screen is on and off, reminder for 5 seconds every 5 seconds limited to 30 repeat and I got 100s of emails and messages and the app is not even on system battery use list. but in general this app can be used with no noticeable difference in battery usage and it can drain your battery in few hours. it depends on the options you choose, there are a lot of options to minimize battery consuming it basically depends on lighting time and enabled widgets.
in worst cases there is options to prevent the app from working if device is not charging and other 10s of options so you can set when the app should not light as when the app should light.
App brief description:
AOE contain a lot of features and options and all can be customized as you like, here is some of the main features:
Edge lighting can also be customized for charging, music, wallpaper and many other events
It can be customized to work in a highly flexible way with AOD clock or independently, or even both like Tap to Light feature.
Lighting can be around all screen or around front camera or both with many other lighting place options like LED style with variety of animations.
You can use it to show lighting effects for many events like notifications including missed calls of course, charging, fully charged, screen lock, screen unlock, headset plugged, listening to music ,
ongoing or outgoing calls, recent apps menu and flash after unlock.
You can customize lighting color, style, effect and place for each event, each app, each contact name or even each chat group.
Notifications light has more useful additional features like Reminder which the lighting will be repeated every period you choose and you can even choose to make a sound alert for notification reminder,
and Mixer which will iterate through all current notifications colors..
Brightness can be adjusted regardless of the lighting is independent or with Always On Display, on top of that you can set high brightness for lights and low brighting for AOD/clock widgets.
It has many options to restrict its job like prevent the app from lighting if device is charging, not charging, not in landscape mode, low battery, sleep time or to follow Do Not Disturb mode.
with a block list to prevent it from working for someone
AOE also support lighting in all screen states, turned off or turned on, horizontal or vertical.

Pretty cool! I didn't know about this app so thanks for sharing! Anyone else have any cool mods or recommendations for settings?
Awesome. Could you add the settings you use to center it on the hole? I'm getting there but just be nice as a starting point then could adjust thickness to taste . Thanks again! So cool. Takes me to back to OMG! NEXUS HAS A NOTIFICATION LED.

This is as close as I could get it to center.
That's seems different from mine. By 10+ on some. I wonder how much the display size setting effect it. Thank you for the starting point.
I managed to use this app but everytime I got a new message after a restart, the app just don't work, does anybody knows a workaround? or it's just me not having a correct config?

Yeah, unfortunately. I just discovered it yesterday so I installed it from here. https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/alrbea-ent/always-on-edge-edge-lighting-/
But I also wanted to unlock all features by buying pro and that seems not to work without PlayStore

General Bugs that I've noticed.

I will be posting bugs and maybe you too just so that we can compile them and maybe we can solve them using the reply functions or something.

I noticed sometimes when I tap things near the bottom of the screen in an app the phone will briefly flash another app as if it thinks I want to swipe to that app. Sometimes it actually does switch to another app. Does this happen to anyone?
If I use Bixby to set a timer, then move the little on screen timer to somewhere convenient it resets to its default position upon changing folding and/or screen orientation

I think your finger activated the bottom home/back gesture. You can turn on the gesture guide so there is more offset from bottom so less accidentally activation.

I didn't think of that. Thanks!
I just switched to the lowest gesture sensitivity too.
In hopes that somebody from Samsung may actually come across this I'll add another thing.. this is copied and pasted from multiple Reddit posts I made earlier tonight
On the Z Fold 3 I noticed that if you change minimum width on the main large screen it also affects the smaller screen. Does anybody know if there is a way to have Bixby routines manipulate developer options so that I can set one width for main screen and one width for smaller screen?
Anyways it'd be nice to have this option available rather than just zoom and font size options via Bixby routines

I doubt Samsung will listen to you. will not waste effort to add codes to cater to this.
I noticed this bug while using my ZF3 at church the other day. I took a pic of it. Anyone else have this?
