I was performing a full backup on my 2013 Nexus 7 using TWRP and on the top left it shows CPU temperture. At it's highest during the backup process the CPU went to 52°C. After the backup completed the temperature started going down and went to 42°C very soon after. I touched the back of the Nexus by the rear camera and it wasn't super hot or anything. It was just a little warm. So my question is what sort of °C temperature can the CPU get to without having any major damaging effect to the CPU? Does the tablet have some kind of thermal protection to prevent CPU from overheating? what is the temperature that would be classfied as overheating?
This was during the backup, so while using the tablet in normal mode i'm sure sometimes i've felt it get warmer to touch than it was during the backup.

does anyone else is nexus get really hot when surfing the internet or doing anything else. I've only been using the phone for 15 minutes and it's already dropped 10 percent. idk its up to about 118 degrees
is this pretty common with this phone?
Clock speed
Usage
Screen brightness
Those affect how your gets.
Are u an aggressive user and clocked it up high and always have high brightness.
No only 15% brightness no over clock. New phone just got it today just seems to heat up asap...and gets over 110 degrees easily. The of course causes major battery drain. Prob normal for this phone just never experienced heat like this before
Isn't the processor on the Gnex designed to do a panic restart when it reaches 110 C's ? :/ yes its a big issue i've noticed that the phone doesn't get that hot when using stock Rom weird...
I don't get over 110 and I'm OCed to 1.3gHz, auto brightness on.

The only time mine gets abnormally hot is during a phone call. Im even underclocked and it still does.
getting hot in a smart phone this powerful is normal. I had the S3 for week, that sucker gets hot!
I agree with OP. Mine gets noticeably warm when scrolling through large non-mobile web sites. It cool when scrolling through apps like tapatalk, market, reader apps. It must be something to do with browser engine
Mine gets quite warm as well. Especially with games like gta 3 and Final Fantasy 3.

please don't forget that you're holding a device with a dual core CPU, clocked at 1200 MHz, without fan, water-cooling or anything. ever tried touching a computer-cpu?
(don't do that, lol)
Mine can easily get to 110 degrees. It definitely has a heat issue. My Razr Maxx can get warm too, but not hot like this GNex. It hurts to palm sometimes !
LTE / Camera / Data stuff . / Charging all contributes to this.
Thank god it has removable battery, since battery life will be significantly dampened by heat.
Mine gets hot since Jelly Bean... Maybe "project butter" is intended to melt our phones like butter
remember, battery temp and cpu temp are two completely different things. cpu temp will get lowered automagically in the gnex when it reaches a certain point(heat throttling is enabled in the gnex, unless you disable it), and it will shut down the cpu when you reach 110C, not 110F, that is a safety feature. 110C is 230F btw.
Im having huge problems with cpu heat, regardless of what im running. Here's a screenshot of the worst temp i've seen. (87c during TWRP backup) even right out of the box, i frequently saw temps of 60c and up after 20minutes of gaming (thats even with power saving cpu throttling turned on)
Anyone else run into heat problems? View attachment 3211470
Wow.. that's way too hot!
You have stock kernel?
First turn off, wait for cooling down, then startup again to check if still gets hot?
If it does, return it for repair?

Presuming you've not rooted (tripping Knox) I'd RMA that sucker. Messing with possible power/heat issues seldom ends well.
Assume you have checked what's running underneath your ROM? Certain apps seem to "hijack" CPU resources until you close them off.

Twrp gets hot backing up and installing ROMs. Pretty typical as well as for games also. Custom kernels with CPU multi core savingnhelp with that a tad
more information
I am rooted (stock rom) but the heat issue has bèen going on since b4 root. My kernel ver is 3.4.39 3702705 #1 after ejecting the sd card, the temps have noticeably fallen. Weird. Thanks in advance for the replies!!!
And dont do having game youll end up with a frying pan also dont turn off and charge while its hot
I've had my M5 (E5603) for about a month now and my CPU temp peaks at around 60-70°C (140-158°F) according CPU Monitor during heavy use (eg. intense gaming or extensive 4K UHD recording). Not once has my device thrown a warning at me or shut down, nor has the performance been affected in any way. During normal use, temperature stays somewhere between 40-55°C (104-131°F). Battery temperature always stays below 40°C (104°F).
So, I was wondering, are these temperatures normal? Could any harm befall on my device? Besides being a tad bit too hot to hold on the back and also the front, it doesn't seem to be causing any problems.
Anybody?
Yes these temperatures are normal. Don't worry.
If cpu temperature is above 65 celcius it is little bit not good. Temperatures of cpu between 55-65 celcius perfectly normal for a waterproof phone.
Don't worry.
M4 aqua heated to 65-80 celcius in it's intial firmware.
This forced sony to release the m5 to cover up the problem in the m4 aqua. ? ? ?
So overheating fixed on m5.
Basically, this is why it is waterproof, so you gotta put it inside water to get colder
(as I have fount everything is normal)
Just wondering if its normal for the temp sensor to read 160c+ in -10c weather.
This happened when i was walking home. Cpu reports extremely high temp and just wondering if this effect any performance.
Bell, htc 10, boot unlocked, S-OFF, 1.90.666.4
.....
Wondering if it's a false reading. Can you download another app that monitors CPU temps and see if there are any discrepancies between the two apps?

Wow,that's really interesting. For my information, are you holding the phone in boiling water?

Probably a false reading. Your battery is too cool for a cpu this hot. Also cpu gets permanently damaged at temperatures this high. Either a sensor is damaged or app giving false reading.
that's because of the minus 10°C outside ^^
This has happened quite a few times for me when i used the phone in the freezer.
the CPU sensor somehow doesn't handle minus temperatures very well. Because the battery is constantly used it heats itself up and does not go into minus temperature.
The SoC itself is often in DeepSleep or almost idle. So it doesn't draw that much power, not enugh to keep the temperature over minus degrees, especially with an aluminum body that sends the complete outside temperature inside, not isolating like glass.
Don't worry about it
If you're curious you can install the app Stability Test https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.into.stability
It heats up the CPU pretty fast, then you can find out what's the lowest normal temperature the sensor can recognize ^^
P.S
You probably cannot damage a CPU due to heat. On my old Xperia Z2 i tried to disable ALL Thermal throttling, and run a Stresstest, when the CPU temp reached 91°C the phone simply shut down. Emergency shutdown to prevent overheating damage. Not sure if it's from Android or CPU hardware protection.
Most Intel CPU's do have a hardware protection, wouldn't be surprised if Snapdragons had the same.

with no OC (AKA 2GHZ + 1.5GHZ) I got 81c, with 2.2Ghz + 1.7Ghz I hit 92c but it kept going with no throttling
95c, i made a video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIwjn8h1Raw
If you do that next time can you do me a favour and get the dmesg?
If you want to you can "dmesg | grep [THERMAL]" to make it smaller.
Hello,
whenever I do a backup in TWRP my phone gets super hot (even 45° Celsius on CPU). Should I be worried or there are limits built into TWRP that bottleneck CPU when it reaches certain temperature?
I always blow on my phone and wave with it during the backup just to cool it down to like 42°C.
Turn off encryption and compression while doing a backup. That should work
45*c is not high temperature for SOC.
Ah, I use compression every time. Will try that. Thanks
