Can I switch my "new" S9 from Rogers to a US ROM? - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Recently upgraded my S8 to an S9 I bought on eBay. The phone is unlocked (Rogers) & I'm using it successfully on Consumer Cellular (AT&T). There are a couple of problems, though. First, I can't get the hotspot to pass data. I can turn the hotspot on, and devices connect to it, but traffic does not route through the phone to the internet. Also, apparently Canadians don't get to use the SPO2 sensor.
I'm hoping that I can flash a US ROM onto this phone and get the hotspot working, and that the SPO2 functionality will return along with that. I use GPS Tether and the hotspot to support Waze on a tablet in the car, so the hotspot is pretty important.
I also use NFC ReTag and Tasker to run scripts & some of the things I'd like those scripts to do require root.
I'm fairly familiar with Odin & updato, & have rooted Samsung tablets before. I'm open to LineageOS or other ROMs if necessary but would prefer to stay as close to stock as possible.
So here's what I'd like to accomplish, prioritized:
1- Functioning hotspot
2- SPO2 sensor working in Samsung Health app
3- Root
Important info:
Model SM-G960W
One UI 2.1
Baseband G960WVLU7ETG1
Kernel 4.9.186-18803994
Build QP1A.190711.020.G960WVLU7ETG1
Service Provider SW SAOMC_SM-G960W_OYV_RWC_QQ_0011 365139304e573398 RWC/RWC/XAC
Patch level 7/1/2020
Advice?

tldr; Yes

I downloaded the latest AT&T firmware & it installed without any trouble. The hotspot works, the SPO2 sensor is back in Samsung Health. I'm going to pass on root for now. The phone now reports its model as SM-G960U1 instead of SM-G960W.

[Q] How to enable wifi tethering for stock UCUEMJB 4.3?

I have been searching around for answers to my question for a few hours and have come up with nothing.
I originally flashed an older rom onto my phone in order to unlock it, then it did the OTA update to 4.3, following which I used CF auto root to successfully root it. Now this is what I have:
AT&T Galaxy S3
Android version 4.3
Baseband version I747UCUEMJB
Build Number JSS15J.I747UCUEMJB
SE Android Status Enforcing SEPF_SMSUNG-SGH-I747_4.3_0024
When I try to enable wifi tethering, either natively or through Portable Wifi Hotspot or other apps then I get the message that "Mobile data is not available or invalid SIM", neither of which is true. I have been able to get FoxFi/PDANet to work for bluetooth tethering, but not WiFi which I need for some of the devices I have with me.
I have seen that perhaps there are some modem/bootloader files that can be flashed over, but those seem to be specific to the leaked version of 4.3 , and I dont know if they would work for the UCUEMJB.
Is there any way I can do a simple mod to enable the wifi teathering? Would prefer to avoid flashing another rom bc Im traveling through Latin America and access to decent internet is a big issue (hence the need to tether).
Thanks!

Help upgrading from 4.1.2 to 4.4.2

Hey all. This is my situation. I have a GT-5110N wifi only tablet that I purchased 2 years ago in Canada. The motherboard recently crashed and the repair place put in a SIM enabled motherboard Model SGH-I467 with Android Jelly bean 4.1.2 I wan't to upgrade to 4.4.2 as I had with my previous motherboard. With extensive searching I found out that this is an AT&T tablet. I try to use the OTA update on the tablet but it says I have the latest version. The AT&T website says there was a OTA update to 4.4.2 in October 2014. I've called both AT&T and Samsung for help. No dice. What can I do?? I checked on sammobile and they only have the 4.1.2 version. However, the SGH-I467M through Telus contains 4.4.2 Can I download that?? I'm new to rooting etc. Do I need to unlock device?? Please help.
Thanks
Unfortunately, there is no firmware available for the sgh-i467 4.4.2
I recently got my 4.4.2 rom rooted and extracted the rom components - but I am trying to find someone who knows what to do with all the stuff to create an odin flashable rom.... but we are not there yet... hoping someone can help out.
If you keep watching here on the forums, it may happen at some point.

Weird as the AT&T website says there is.
I can't post the link yet but its there. I'll cut and paste

Also, the same model but Canadian version has the update SGH-I467M
Yes... there is a firmware available via ota... fota is firmware over the air update...
The only way to get it is to be on att cellular network. It is not available to download any other way as far as I know. If you find a way to do so, please report back to us where to get it.
Also, the i467M is the Canadian model and it has different firmware... it is not the same as i467.

oh ok. Now I understand. Thanks man. I tried to get AT&T to help me out. If I had a US IP address, would the wifi update work?? Or am I required to have an AT&T sim card installed?? I guess you kinda stated that already.
I had to have an active att sim card to get it to work on my device... wouldn't work any other way for me.
Thanks
Thanks dandroid. I guess the next time I travel to the US I'll see if I can get a hold of and active SIM card. Let me know if you hear of any other solutions. Thanks again.

Dandroid: If I request AT&T to unlock the device, will that help me?? Another question, would the firmware upgrade file from sammobile for the equivalent Telus device work then if I unlocked it from AT&T and then used odin??
Att will only sim unlock, which makes the device useable with other brand sim cards... mine was already Sim unlocked by att before I tried to update to 4.4.2, but in still needed an active att sim to update it.
Trying to flash any firmware other than sgh-i467 will brick your device - doesn't matter if it is unlocked or not.
Thanks again

Thanks dandroid. I guess I either wait and update on my next trip to the US (who knows when) or try the AT&T gophone option. $5 sim card and $20 refill. Activate it and hopefully it recognizes it then lets me do upgrade via wifi or Kies. That should work right?
That sounds like the easiest option to try... if you can get a cheap Sim card it might be worth a try.
I love this tablet, but I hate this locked bootloader bs...

Flash T-Mobile ROM to ATT S6 Edge + (Wifi Calling not working with ATT ROM)

Okay, so long story short, I have a SM-G928A I brought over from ATT to Tmobile. Before, I was running the 6.0 ATT Rom, and WIFI Calling would not enable, although I BELIEVE it was working. (I could see the symbol in the call status screen when I made a call.) You also need Wifi calling to use advanced messaging features. Yesterday I flashed the newest 7.0 ATT Rom to the phone, everything works fine, however Wifi calling still can't be enabled.
I read a couple places that even if I put the TMobile ROM on it, WIFI Calling still won't work. I need some advice. I really want this to work, however the phone is working fine besides that.
Right now I am on G928AUCU4EQC6.
I also read something about flashing a PIT file with the TMOBILE rom, but it was not clear at all, very confusing. I need some advice on what to do next.
Forgot also want to remain on Nougat.
How did you manage to flash ATT rom on it? i've been trying and keep getting "Secure check fail pit" Im on tmobile rom with Nougat 7.0

So, how was the flashing process because people told me that flashing the s6 series was not a good idea since it was not universal like the s7 series. Also, did volte work because that's what I mainly need to enable on my s6 edge which I'm taking from atnt to tmobile

Not getting OTA updates from my carrier (Mint), I suspect because of a possible misconfiguration. Any ideas on how to fix?

Hey guys! I have an LG G8 Thinq (LM-G820UM), stock OS, no root. I use Mint Mobile in the US.
I configured the APN settings according to Mint's website and I can call, send SMS/MMS, and get internet access just fine. But, I can't seem to use WiFi calling (though it's enabled on my Mint account) and I have not received a software update since March of 2021.
It says I am on the latest software version, but I have Android 10, and I've heard other Mint users are on 11 or even 12 with the same phone.
What can you recommend for me to make this work? I'd prefer not to root, but I am willing to. Can anyone ELI5 or link me a guide to fix this?
Thank you!

Well first, Mint is not a carrier, they are an MVNO. They 'resell' T-Mobile network. So, it's not Mint that would update the OS, it would be whatever OS was originally (or rather currently) on the device.
So Mint doesn't care what OS variant you're using (Sprint, VZW, ATT, etc), but that' doesn't mean all the features will work (like vowifi).
I use Mint and have found that crossflashing my Sprint device to the latest US Open OS version (a11), everything will work; VoLTE, VoWifi, data, sms/mms, etc.
Mostly, the only way you would see an OTA update is if you are using the correct OS and that carriers network. That's not completely accurate though, some carriers will send an update over wifi without a (usually needed) carrier specific sim card, but that's hit or miss, no guarantees (I've had a Sprint phone that did it, but ATT is known to never do it).
You don't have to root to crossflash. But it's a real good idea to back up your entire rom before doing anything, or at the very least the essential partitions that are specific to your phone.
cheers

Thanks so much for the explanation and the advice! I will begin researching crossflashing, pretty sure I've seen a couple of detailed posts here about it.
Is there a method to backup my ROM without root? I'm familiar with the process with TWRP installed, but not sure how to do it without. Would it be easier to just unlock the bootloader, flash TWRP + Magisk, backup, and then crossflash, rather than do it all without root?
Also, were you able to get an OTA update from Mint/T-Mobile once you crossflashed to the US Open OS version? Or would I have to flash an Android 12 ROM to upgrade?
Thanks again for the help, apologies for my newbieness. Just trying to get all my ducks in a row before I get hasty and brick my phone. lol

No worries, all good questions and not that easy to find the answers.
The best back-up method, imho, is to use the bkerler edl utilities (g search that, you'll find the github page).
Using twrp, what you can backup will be limited, but you can use dd commands to backup via twrp adb interface, but that's very time consuming.
I've never gotten an OTA update on LG phone if not running their specific OS, and not rooted or crossflashed to it. But, no big deal as pretty much now, there are no updates. Only the available KDZ and after flashing / xflashing to one of them, there won't be updates to it.
At this time, LG has not released any a12 roms, afaik. There are supposedly 'plans' to do so, but I'd bet it never happens.
cheers

Question will i lose fingerprint lock after i unlock the bootloader?

hello, im new to android rooting, and i wanna attempt using magisk on my main phone (a325f) but i do not know if the ability to unlock the phone with the fingerprint will no longer be available after i unlock the bootloader, and im not too sure...any answer?
There aren't enough people who rooted that phone to decide if all models in all countries are safe to root with no issues, I'd say wait till Android 13 update
Hi, I'm currently using rooted A325F-XID (Indonesia Region) and the Fingerprint Sensor is working with One UI Firmware (A325FXXU2BVG3).
But If you want to use GSI ROM, the fingerprint not working at all (the UI crashed), and the fingerprint is working again if it restore with Stock ROM (One UI). But recently I had bug with the mobile data is turned off every 2 minutes in latest One UI Firmware (A325FXXU2BVH1) but it fine before that firmware. I'll report if the bug is fixed on next firmware update

Hey, I'm using A325F-XDA (South Africa) with root through magisk, the only thing you have to do to ensure everything works is to flash Android 12 April patch, because for some reason the latest patch causes the phone to loose signal for a few seconds every 5-10 min but with the April patch, myself, Captain_cookie_200 and a few others have found 0 problems so far, but if you do decide to unlock your bootloader and root please keep in mind you WILL TRIP KNOX and some features will not work such as Samsung pay, secure folder and some other Samsung security features, but there are some speculation that you could get Google pay/Wallet to work. If you need any help feel free to message me.
