Can someone help me understand having to pay even after Galaxy forever able to upgrade and turning in phone. That you pay 699 and on top pay a monthly and pay money to return phone?

Basically it is an early upgrade program where you lease a phone and make monthly payments. When you pay off at least 50% of the total price you return the phone and are able to lease another phone for monthly payments.
Now what happens after you return the phone may vary, but if I recall correctly when you return the phone they accelerate the remaining payments. So long as the phone meets the set criteria for being in good condition they will credit the account for the same amount. If the phone is to banged up, damaged or something else which makes it not meet the criteria they set you will be charged the remaining amount (or what ever amount is set forth in the terms/conditions). So the only thing you should be paying at the time of upgrade would be the sales tax for the new phone you are upgrading too...
Of course if you want the most accurate answers you should call the carrier/provider whom you are getting the galaxy forever upgrade through.
My provider has a similar early upgrade program, but unless I have the handset insurance I have to pay a 45.00 upgrade along with what ever taxes are for the total price of the phone. So for the Galaxy S20 Ultra it would be about 100 dollars out of pocket for the early upgrade (45.00 early upgrade fee, rest is sales tax).

Essentially you pay for the rest of your life and NEVER actually own a phone as it is being leased (or paid off forever)...
Might as well throw your soul in there too as the devil now owns it anyway..

True... The program is geared towards those who want to have the latest phone every year. For this a person should be aware of what it is they are enrolling into and what it means to "lease" a phone.
But if if I recall correctly it is optional and not mandatory. Even if a person is enrolled under the Galaxy Forever program a person can just simply finish paying the lease normally and (once done paying) own the phone in question.

With AT&T it's a perk if you want to upgrade due to eye candy your soul can't resist.
A better and cheaper option if you're hell bent on buying a new model.
So far Samsung hasn't given me enough reasons to migrate from the 10+
Probably skip a year or two and see if Samsung can get back on the ball. Major fail in the newest models; way expensive for good internal memory + external memory and no bluetooth AptX HD support.
The Note 20 ultra is also ultra harder to protect with it's cam tit which makes it thicker as well.
The laser focus is nice though... about time.

if it's the samsung upgrade program it's really not worth it unless there is a big upgrade.
I took it from last year from a Note 9 to the 10+ 5G as I wanted 5G as I live in a 5G area, but in truth it was a bad deal. I paid probably £500 then had to send back the phone after a year and all I got off the new phone was token £100, if I held on to the phone for the 2 years the trade in Value would probably still be higher than £100 and I could definite sell the phone for more than that.
also if you have any damage on the phone over general wear and tear you will likely be charged for repairs on top.
so yeah I did it to get 5G as it was an important update for me but on a regular yearly update it's a really terrible deal and should be ignored unless you have money to burn.

Sprint forced me to activate a new line to get the Epic 4G Touch

I walked into my local Sprint store with $600 cash in my pocket anticipating to walk out with a brand new SGS2E4GT at full MSRP without any additional commitment on my contract. (Have you guys noticed the full non contract price for this device is not listed.)
After the sales rep got the device from the stock room, we were ready to set it up with my existing account. After he logs into my account he notifies me that Im not eligable to an upgrade until January. So with a smile, I informed him that Im aware that Im not eligable yet & thats why Im willing to pay the full price for the phone. Then he said, Sorry sir, but effective today, every sprint device is ONLY available at a carrier subsidized price to people willing to activate a new line or those qualified for an upgrade. Which means nobody can purchase a phone at full price & swap it to their current number. (This **** didn't make any sense to me at all.)But any ways long story short, after a few minutes of blah blah blah, I walked out of the store with a brand new GS2, and a 3rd line to my account which I will not use but will be billed monthly $20 plus $10 premium data. Then he had the nerve to remind me that If I swap the new phone to my primary line before 30 days, I will lose my mail in rebate.....

While I'm aware of their new "no device without a 2 year contract" policy I didn't think it was impossible to replace a phone without a new contract. Frankly it sounds like you got fncked. I would call Sprint and escalate this up to someone that gives a fnck because frankly this is a gigantic load of bull****.
...there is no way in hell that you can't even replace a device on an existing line/contract. If that is true, well, there is NO REASON AT ALL TO STAY WITH SPRINT. (VERY SLOW) UNLIMITED DATA IS NO REASON TO STAY WITH A COMPANY THAT WONT EVEN LET YOU REPLACE A PHONE WITHOUT A NEW CONTRACT.
Even given their new restrictive policies I highly doubt that what you were subject to was actual official Sprint policy--I don't give a **** what they say, they are likely idiots who interpreted the new policy wrong (either for their own benefit or merely out of their own extreme ignorance).
Escalate this as appropriate. This is bull****...and if you find that this is actual official policy please demand the section of the contract that specifies this and LET US KNOW. We will spread the word and take heed which will result in Sprint losing US and EVERYBODY WE HAVE ALWAYS RECOMMENDED GO TO SPRINT. EVERYBODY. Do you hear that Sprint?
...if (and when) you (most likely) find this to be complete bull**** on your Sprint reps part (and I would be sure to post the store number and location here and many other places, store manager name included) I would also demand a form of compensation for having been lied to and tricked into a contract. Nothing extravagant, but, something you find equivalent in value to your time and expense required to deal with this crap.

Make sure you return the device by Sunday so you don't get charged an activation fee. Given the situation you described, you can probably get any charges reversed by care anyway... but to be on the safe side, return it within 3 days to avoid the fee for sure.
That's BS, u got the short end of the stick. So much to talk about here. First of all Sprint is known to make an exception that close out of a 2 year agreement and provide you with full subsidization. At the very least they will provide you with partial subsidization. The reason why they probably don't sell them at full price is because it probably doesn't ever happen because it makes zero sense even with the recent early termination hike to $350 dollars. If you want it right now, process the order overnight on the line in question with overnight delivery from a retailer like wirefly.com and return and close out the new line u purchased. I'm pretty sure they'll give you options to buy without a new line at wirefly. That would be really bad for business if they didn't. I think the return policy is 14 days now and you may suffer a restocking fee for it all. Good luck.

This phone doesn't have a mail in rebate. And remember you can call customer care tell them that they are not allowing you to buy the phone. At least I didn't get a rebate.

I was just going to say this. If u go on sprint.com u can buy the phone without an upgrade for $499.99 so that just shows that place screwed u. Hope u get this straightened out cuz thats bull**** man.
Yeah use the 14 day satisfaction guarantee to tell that store a big **** you.
Just pay the ETF on your old line. Depending how long you had it the most it can be is $200 but since you said your upgrade was in January, it should be a lot less then that even be less then that. In the end you will save more money then buying the phone outright as long as you do not care about getting a new number.....
Then you go go thank the guy in the Sprint store for saving you a ****load of money!
And I thought there were no mail in rebates? Did you actually get a mail in rebate with the phone?

Thinking of buying this phone from Wirefly.

I am with Sprint under my dads account. It is a family plan with my sister, my dad and I. Heres my question, I just want to know if I can order safely from Wirefly without any fuse, in other words, they will send me my phone without attempting to change our plan, rise our bill or anything like that. I just want to upgrade my phone to the Galaxy Nexus with the same plan intact, nothing change. The reason I am asking this is because I once tried to order a phone from Amazon (at the same price of a normal upgrade), and they wanted me to get a brand new number and plan.

Hello latindor17: Wirefly can certainly upgrade your phone without changing your plan or the amount you pay every month (provided you’re not on an old grandfathered rate plan the carrier no longer offers, in which case you may be asked to choose a current rate plan – but if that were the case, Wirefly would always contact you for approval before proceeding with your order). Darunion is correct that you will need you renew your contract for 2 years in order to be eligible for the price on the website, but you do not need to get a new number, you may keep your existing number without a problem. There are no other hidden fees or charges, as long as you maintain your account in good standing (and don’t downgrade your plan) within 6 months of your activation date. What? I used Wirefly to get a Galaxy SIII as an upgrade on my T-Mobile account with absolutely no issues. They simply checked to see if I was eligible for an upgrade and once they verified that I was I purchased a Galaxy SIII as an upgrade for $200. They did not screw with my plan at all.
It was much cheaper than going through T-Mobile directly ($379 for the phone at the time) and they shipped the phone extremely fast. I'd use them again in a heartbeat.
** I should mention that I have since sold the Galaxy SIII and reverted back to the GNex because it just wasn't the same. But that's neither here nor there. :highfive:

What Ms. Kim said here is exactly why you SHOULDN'T go with wirefly or any other similar service. They make you sign an additional contract, apparently in this case for 6 months, that has NOTHING to do with Sprint. Well, technically it does since it stipulates you must stay with Sprint for 6 months, but this contract isn't with Sprint.
So, if you move, find a better deal, find a reason to terminate without an ETF, etc., you're still on the hook with this company for 6 months. If you like buying through a 3rd party, I think Best Buy and Radioshak both still don't require this anti-consumer tactic.
Wow. I didn't realize that when I did it. Luckily if you plan on sticking with your current contract for more than 6 months this won't effect you (like most people). But it would be quite annoying if you did need to switch carriers quicker than expected.

what reason could you find to terminate without an ETF though? as far as i know death is the only exception..and sometimes that doesnt even work
the stipulation (as i understand it) is that you just have to hold your end of the bargain for 6 months (something you already agreed to with your carrier by signing a 2 year anyway)...the reason for the 6 months is because thats the contract they have with the carriers..they recruit or keep customers for carriers and pass on the commission to us (which is why they can sell the phones cheaper)
its not like they are going to kill you if you break the wirefly contract..you just end up paying retail for the phone...as long as you are certain about the phone and plan that you are purchasing i dont see a problem...if you have buyers remorse or you don't do your homework and want to cut the cord..then yeah...you're gonna pay for it..thats kinda what happens when you break any contract (cell phone or otherwise)
i have been researching this company as well...reading customer comments and their fine print..im thinking about upgrading to the Note 2 through them...$300 as opposed to $420 with tmobile ($370 AFTER mail in rebate)
if kim from wirefly is still reading this...the phone is listed as $300 (for upgrades)...do you know what the end cost is gonna be? is it $300? or is there gonna be upgrade fees and tax and my first born?

I'm pretty sure no additional tax is charged on top of the listed price. I think T-Mobile charged me an upgrade fee but instantly credited it back to me on my next bill.

Our 181 day rule is based on a contractual agreement that we have with the carriers. We don't get compensated for a sale from the carrier until after this time frame has been met. All 3rd party dealers have a stipulation period that customers must abide by even though the terms and conditions can vary from company to company, this is an industry standard. The carrier will charge you an upgrade fee but this is only paid once on the first billing cycle following the upgrade. The taxes for the service is assessed by the carrier and varies depending on where you live. If you are keeping the same rate plan then your taxes should not be any different then what you are currently paying now. Let me know if I can answer any further questions.

Buy it from costco wireless. $39.99 upgrade. No extra etf and they refund the $36 upgrafe fee. 90 day exchange. Dont even think you have to be a member.

I've never had to wait 2 years for a phone upgrade; usually, after about 12 months, I have been able to call and ask nicely for an upgrade, so, I would NEVER go for this...ATT gets more than enough of our hard earned cash, why give them more???
So when you first buy a phone...you are paying a subsidized price, and that amount is "hidden" in your monthly fee...now they want you to pay another fee...then get a phone...then pay more on top of that?? Makes no sense to me. I'd rather buy a new phone outright on a no-interest credit card or something..shoot maybe even just save up for it. I've even wheeled and dealed my phones on Craigslist...Is business really that bad that carriers are trying to nickel and dime people for everything? 20 months was fine. Gave you time to make a choice on what you wanted instead of paying an arm and a leg when you get that itch to change. Oh well, to each their own. I definitely won't be taking advantage of this new option.
I guess ATT (and eventually Verizon) feel the need to come up with some new razzle dazzle to make people think they are getting something similar to what t-mobile is offering. You are correct, when you do the math, this new "special" program is nothing more than another way for ATT to take money out of your pocket.
Carriers ALWAYS try and nickle and dime the public out of every possible dollar they can, and most of these new "special" deals, aren't special for anyone except ATT executives, and stock holders...

you paid $199 for note 2, one year later you sell the phone for $300 (min). then you spend $350 on another phone. total is 199+350=550
with new plan. one year you pay 650/20*12=390, second year you pay 390. total 780.

This is a bit tricky.
Say for the Note 2 you paid 199 + locked into a contract. The price isn't actually subsidized into the cost of your monthly contract, rather the cost is the ASSURANCE that you'll be locked into a contract for 2 years. The amount of your monthly bill can go up/down obviously, and you won't find a line on your bill stating "monthly phone subsidized fee".
My take on this new program is that there will be a line listing the cost of your phone bundled into your monthly fee, without a contract locking you in for 2 years.
Difference is that if you're insane, you can get a different phone 12 months down the line, and split that new cost into your existing monthly bill. This allows you to theoretically have the cost of the new phone added onto the bill in addition to the cost of the old phone.
This isn't much of a deal if you're getting a high end smartphone at 6-700 bucks, but a pretty good deal if it's a lower end or less expensive phone.

This is what AT&T stated:
The monthly installments will run between $15 and $50, depending on the phone, and are a function of evenly dividing the full retail price of the phone by 20 months.
By way of example, AT&T says, a Samsung Galaxy S4 in Next will cost $32 a month on top of your monthly service plan. You'll be able to trade it in and upgrade after 12 payments, or pay it off in full after 20 months. That's based on the full $639 purchase price of a 16GB model.

Slight correction. Second year you'd be paying 260, not 390. The split is over 20 months remember.

if you get a new phone, the 20 months term will start over again. my calculation is based on the assumption that we buy new phone every year.

I'm just guessing here, but I think that if you buy another phone right at the first 12 month point, they'll stack that with (on top of) the existing cost of the old phone. So you'll be paying monthly + old phone + new phone, instead of month + new phone.
If they give you a buyout amount to totally pay off the old phone, that might work better.
Another thing that we haven't really considered are the extra fee (if any) revolving around the extended cost of the phone. Is there a service fee for this 'loan'? I mean, that's what it is after all. It's like a mortgage for your phone.

the new plan, my understanding is that when we have a new phone with this plan, we only need to pay for monthly phone payment, after one year, we can choose either keep the phone and pay for the remaining 8 months (after that the phone is yours), or, upgrade to a new phone and pay for the new phone's monthly payment again (20 months term reset).
so basically every 12 months you can upgrade with no cost, by keeping paying 650/20 each months. convenient for lazy people i think.
monthly service bill won't be affected (call+text+data).
yeah, there might be service fee for every upgrade too.

Well when you upgrade your line you have to do one of two things: either you trade in your old phone (I am assuming it should be in good condition otherwise they will charge you for it) or you can keep your phone and pay the balance left to pay it off.
ATT is marketing the deal like its doing us a favor saying they got rid of the $35 upgrade fee, yet they will charge us the same amount each month for the next 20.
I wonder how many will fall for this?

I ask for retention, since they can make decisions no other department can...
the last 2 early upgrades I got were for 2 Gnote2's; one was about 4 months ago, and then the other one was about 1 month ago; I was less than 12 months in on both of these phone contracts when I called.
The first one I got for 299, less 6 months of unlimited texting credit(180 dollars, so the net was 119. They waived the activation fee on that one...
The most recent one,was 199, about a month ago, and they did charge me activation, but I called when the bill came and asked them to waive it, and they did!
The only take away from this is that you need to ask for an early upgrade, and if you are a good customer,(I have 3 lines,) ALWAYS pay your bill on time, and dont ask for all sorts of crazy stuff, there is a very good chance you can get an upgrade after 8-12 months...the "sales" department, usually cant do these kinds of things, thats why you have to get to retention....

Correction: when you get a new phone after 12 months, you trade in old phone buy new phone and start over. The old phone bill is canceled. With Att Next, you no longer own the phone, it's a "lease phone". The tricky part is now rooting and unlocked bootloader will be difficult decisions because the phone must be in good satisfactory condition on all levels

Just received this. The must really appreciate us here as they will give us our money back and even collect the device.

Just got the same email and this paragraph makes me angry.........

There is no "token of appreciation" here at all samsung!!! You are offering me nothing at all and that's just not on I'm afraid.
O2 are the same but worse, they have collected my not told me to contact them at least 24 hours after the call to talk an upgrade or cancellation I contacted them today nearly 48 hours after that call and basically got told they would refuse to do anything for 3-5 days until they actually had received and checked the device. they also offered no help with lost money for things like screen protectors and other accessories so needless to say I will never be using them again. they didn't even offer a token gesture discount on an alternative device.
so I've said they can go fornicate a rusty pole and and took up the 20% monthly discount my works offers on EE to get the Pixel XL.
Similarly composed letter in Estonia too.
Returned everything and disappointed. Will think not twice, but five times before buying Samsung products in future.
Makes me wonder what are they smoking to believe that europeans are happy to be treated worse than rest of the world.
I was just pushed a message which directed me to call Samsung on the 0330 number. Called them. Lines are closed even though it says open to 6pm saturday. Used the number ending in 1000, guy on the end said to power down phone and I will get a call back from them. I asked if they had thought this through. How do i get a call back without a phone to use. I need the money to buy a phone but cant get the refund until a long time after I have sent this one back.
This is going from bad to worse isn't it.
I was disappointed with Samsung about the faulty Note 7s, but I was not angry with them since they made some design or manufacturing mistakes which to an extent you could argue were out of their control. Or at the very least, which were not forseen.
But as they continue to mismanage this situation in this cack-handed way, I am most certainly starting to get angry. As stated in the thread earlier, people need time to plan for swapping their phones out. These are not toys, for which there is mild or no inconvenience if you are without it for a few days. These are serious pieces of equipment people rely upon in their daily lives.
I won't be returning mine any time soon.
I'm angry that they offered the s7e at full price. Not even a discount for our troubles. To add insult you can get the s7e cheaper elsewhere too
Most odd. In this European country the Note 7 cost 880.00€. The S7 edge cost 100.00€ LESS so hardly a fair exchange! Obvious thing to do is accept the cash back offer. Like you guys and gals I am also out of pocket big time on original Samsung accessories. Samsung in Europe have not made this an acceptable return have they. End of the day we, the consumer, have lost out on this as well as Samsung Korea.
One thing for sure, don't let the politics of the situation get in the way. Return your Note 7. Left a bitter taste in my mouth.

I would be very interested to know how any complaints from guys here develop. People need to phone them and complain, get angry, threaten them by informing them you will go to every tech website and report this pathetic customer service attitude to them.
I am sick of Samsung treating the UK and Europe like we are not as important as the rest of the world. We pay more for the phone, we get less special offers, we haven't got Samsung Pay here yet, we didn't get the Note 5 and now we don't get any compensation. Just a lame email that makes it seems they are doing us a huge favour by giving us a refund! The least they could do is give us a hefty discount on the S7 Edge.

yep how this recall has been handled in the UK is a massive joke, I've already told O2 where they can go since they refuse to release my account or let me upgrade for best part of a week, basically wanting to leave me without a phone. I realise the problem has likely happened the same with all suppliers in the UK, but I'm pissed off so I'm leaving them and going else where.
for those at carphone warehouse it should be possible to get a full refund and your contract dropped to a monthly sim only contract, they can't force you to take a alternative, it is the same reason O2 had to give the option of a full refund and potential cancellation because the phone has to be returned meaning you are not getting any goods so need a full refund for those goods, the problem with the likes of carphone warehouse is the contracts include the device charge in the service charge so you lose your monthly payments that should go towards the phone, I was slightly better off on O2 as the phones are a separate credit agreement so O2 is forced to cancel it and refund me all payments I've made on it, the problem being they are going to drag it out that long I will have made another payment they will have to refund me instead of just clearing the phone off now as it has been picked up by the courier for return.

I am one of the lucky ones I suppose. I got mine from ee one of the first to have pre ordered, the when the 1st exchange kicked in was given 50£ for my troubles and 30 quid for accessories refund. I also got free 8gb data as ee expected a delay in delivery. Second time round I was offered a choice of upgrade for the exact same deal I had on a note 7 to get a iPhone 7 plus (grr iPhone yes I know), but it's the wife who chose it as she fancied something new. Having upgraded before the handset was exchanged left ee in a dilemma as they could not then give me a loan phone because the iPhone 7 plus won't be available until end of October possibly. They then asked me to send the note 7 handset back in for the recall and wait for my iPhone 7 plus. I advised them I had no other handset. They tried all the usual please use a previous handset and I stuck to my guns. They then offered me 50 quid to purchase a new handset as a I await for the iPhone 7 and laughed back at the chap that how could I buy a handset for 50 quid. After negotiating and arguing was given 150 quid credit for a handset as a I await my iPhone 7,so definitely benefitted from this nightmare.

I think this has been an unprecedented issue for all involved especially second party networks like ee. Initially when the second recall was kicking in ee didn't know what to do, which is why I ended up getting nearly 250 quid from this whole mess so can't complain.

both recalls O2 has refused to part with a penny or even offer help in a reasonable time frame, hell just to get through to the line they said I had to phone immediately I spent over an hour on hold, honestly their customer service throughout has been terrible and a total waste of space, achieving nothing other than alienating their customers.

Getting the S8+ using JoD ?

So went in to T-Mobile they want $130 down on the S8+. I am on JoD ( Jump on Demand ) typically they program just requires paying the taxes upfront only.
And I also need to switch my sim card out put in my wife's phone for 24 hrs and then come back for the deal to go well and smooth. Not sure what that's about ?
So I'll think about it and come back tomorrow.
That's the down payment now. They want the monthly lease to come to about 30, so that's how it works out. As the prices of new phones go up, so will our down payments
When I spoke to a T-Mobile rep, I was told that the issue is not the cost of the phone but a deal T-Mobile made with Samsung. As a way to help recoup the costs of the note 7. true or not, that is what I was told. As well I was promised that "In the unlikely event that the Note 8 also contains a down payment, the S8's down payment will be transferable"

LOL... that's so funny... I was told by the store manager that any phone is above $720 the diff will be paid upfront as a down payment no matter what phone and no matter for how long you have been a customer.

I've heard similar as well, and in the event that were true (which I think we will see as new phones come out). All T-Mobile customers need to revolt basically, because that is NOT what is in the terms of JoD. From the mouth of John Legere himself "You won't pay a single penny out of pocket to walk out the door with your new phone, not even sales tax" "Up to 3 new phones a year" " And all of it at $0 out the door, $0 at upgrades, $0 Fees, 0 wait, 0 bull****... and yes it really is that simple"

So by their own definition the s8 can not cost $30 or $130, and the Note8 can not cost anything.

I called in armed with this info, and called BS on it being $130/$30 based on these terms. And was fed the line previously stated. I plan on calling back in tomorrow when I order the phone to fight it one more time to see where it gets me.
I traded in my LG V10 today for a S8+ and I had to pay $130 down.

Same exact price for the S7 edge. That's why I had got a regular s7. Big mistake, I lamented that decision for a year.
My husband traded in his (formerly my) lg v10 for an s8. We went in for the 8+ but when we found out about the 130 up front it made no sense financially. He'll most likely be trying the note 8 when it comes out so that 130 would be a total waste!
Honestly... I thought the whole point of jod was no big upfront payment. What's the point of paying all that up front to "rent" a phone? Unless you're keeping it for a long time 130 up front plus the monthly for the few months before the note 8 comes out... Doesn't seem to be a wise way to spend money.

Your not renting the device. You are financing it like a car. You can swap next year, but you don't have too. You can pay it off whenever you like and sell it. They did the same thing with the S7 and the S7 edge. It cost more, you pay more to keep the monthly payment the same.
Meh. I'd rather pay the same monthly with the 0 down and a higher payoff amount at the end if I choose to keep it.
Actually I'd probably even rather pay a higher monthly amount than paying a 100+ down-payment but I guess that's just me.
He's enjoying the s8 so far so we'll see how things look when the note 8 gets closer.

There has always been a down payment on the "premium" phones weather it be the screen size that is bigger or the storage bigger of the same model. You aren't changed a down payment for the regular S8 just the S8+ because it the bigger more expensive one.
This was the case for the S7e where the regular S7 had no down payment either. And all the other models that had 2 versions

I called BS on this as well and it escalated to Legere's office. They even have the nerve to still keep the JOD announcement posted on the T-Mobile YouTube channel (search "Uncarrier Amped"). They still haven't gotten back to me, and I doubt they will because they have no good answer. The whole point of JOD for me was that I could use the newest devices without a large upfront investment. Allowing customers to Jump 3x/year acknowledges the premise that we don't plan on paying devices off, hence the lease option. Who wants to sink a down payment into something they won't keep? It makes more financial sense to amortize that investment by paying a higher monthly fee. They aren't being altruistic by asking for money up front to "keep your payments low", they're mitigating the financial impact of your device trade-in, and passing the brunt of the depreciation on to customers.
