you can also flash the factory image again, assuming you can unlock your bootloader and have another phone or PC with the adb & fastboot tools and any drivers (if using win10, linux hasn't needed any in my experience) installed and working correctly.
make a backup like the other guy said. I know when flashing the factory image files, if you open the flash-all.sh or flash-all.bat files in a text editor, you can remove the "-w" on the bottom line of the script and it won't erase your data. But as the other poster said, maybe that won't work if you're going back a version. I've not experienced that with flashing images, I've only run into issues like that when installing OTAs from adb. Flashing seems to let you get around that.
good luck

From the Google page: First, make sure you are running a beta version of Android. View devices to find the device you want to remove and click Opt out. Your device will receive an update within 24 hours that will wipe all user data and install the latest stable public version of Android. You will not be able to unenroll and revert back to a lower public release version of Android without first wiping all locally saved data on your device. You may also encounter issues restoring a backup.

Pixel XL 1 not getting OTA Updates

Hi,
am using a Pixel XL 1 on Android 8.1, bootloader unlocked, patch level of February. Now I have the problem that since about December no OTA updates are shown/offered at all. Therefor I always had to manually update.
Even the manual triggering of searching for updates, which has recently been changed so that the devices explicitly should get the currently available update, does not work.
The device was rooted, but I have unrooted it (Magisk) now, and is running the standard firmware from Feburar on it.
Does anyone have any clue why my device is not offered any OTA updates?
Anyone?
What kind of recovery do you have installed? Stock or TWRP?

Stock. So everything should be as vanilla as possible! I'm really clueless.
i don't get it either. pixels running a non-stock os should get notifications about a new update. they won't install successfully though. i'm guessing, but maybe going through the unroot process to get rid of magisk did not return your os to completely stock. maybe some junk was left behind and that's causing your issue.
my suggestion is to flash a full factory image to start fresh. i would edit the flash-all.bat script to remove the -w option to keep data. if that doesn't work, put the -w option back and rerun to wipe data and flash the factory image. if you really want to see if that fixes your problem, flash an older image like the february or january one, and see if the update notification comes back. or flash the march image to be up to date and wait until april to see if you get the update notification.

It's just the hassle installing everything from scratch again.
I wish recovery/backup was as easy as on iOS. Without necessity of any tricks, root etc.
Is this phone enrolled in the Android Beta Program ? I've had trouble getting OTA updates on my phone after the beta program ended for it until I un-enrolled from the program, then I got updates like normal. There will be warnings about having to wipe the device, but if your on the the stock/stable version already you won't have to.

Tried that one as well. I was on a beta at some point, but unsubscribed from the beta. Also tried to unsubscribe again, but it the well know link took me to a page where it said that there is no beta, hence I couldn't try to unsubscribe again.
When you flashed the full factory image did you use the newest march update? if you did then you wouldnt get anything because you are already current
Gotta say, exactly the same problem.. stuck on 8.0 November lol. Haven't found a solution, too lazy to manually flash for now. Let me know if you find a solution!
have you tried deleting the data and cache on the google services app?

How Do I Flash Factory Image?

It's been some time since I've done this so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I've had my Pixel 2 XL for like a month now...but since day one I've gotten occasional force closes of various apps. Well next week I'm going with a new carrier (Koodo here in Canada) and I thought it would be a great time to flash a factory image to make sure everything is correct. Also when does Google release monthly updates? Is it the first week of April, maybe I'll just wait and flash that factory image when it comes out. Thanks for the help.

If your wanting to flash a factory image, you'll need a few things first.
I would highly recommend that you look over the linked thread carefully. It has many links and tips to help you on your way :good:

Make sure you have the latest adb and fastboot. Get them from Google...
Go get the latest image and Unzip it. Do not Unzip the folder inside. Move everything you just unzipped into the folder with adb and fastboot.
Now, if you've unlocked and unlocked critical, great. If you haven't unlocked critical, you'll have to. The system image won't install if the bootloader is out of date. Sadly, this will wipe your data.
If both are already unlocked, then open the flash-all file with a text editor and remove the,"-w" and the space preceding, then save the file. Removing the -w will keep your data. Run the flash-all.bat file and in about 10 minutes everything will be flashed.

First thing!! Forget fast!! You need to fastboot flash a full factory image with the -w still in the script. Maybe even do it twice. Then go in and do a factory reset from the OS for good measure. Once that is done and you know it reboots you can go through the locking command. I would NOT toggle the OEM switch in dev though.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using XDA Labs
So this has been a a very frustrating experiance but I think I've got everything working again. I don't know how many times I've flashed different factory images and then tried to install TWRP and then install a new custom rom. So I want to explain all of the steps I took (if I remember them all).
0. I couldn't boot into my system but had TWRP installed. At this point I should have tried to get all my data from the sd card via "adb pull /sdcard" .
1. I didn't find any option to fix my system. So I followed this guide to install a factory image (link).
3. I skipped through all of the setup processes and gave my phone wifi. Then I went into the system and did a factory reset.
4. After skipping thourgh the setup again I enabled adb and bootet into the bootloader "adb reboot bootlader"
5. From the bootloader I booted into TWRP by "fastboot boot twrp-3.3.0.0-taimen.img. In the recovery I set the display time out to 300s because for some reason once the phone timed out I could get into twrp any more and the screen stayed black.
6. I transferred the twrp installer and my rom by " adb push TWRP_installer.zip /sdcard/Download" and " adb push ROM.zip /sdcard/Download"
7. I first added the TWRP installer to the flash queue and then I added the rom and then falshed them both. This allowed me to install the rom.
8. For some reason TWRP was not installed. So repeat step 5 and only flash the TWRP_installter.zip
Problems I had:
- In twrp I often got errors that said unable to mount system or vendor. I decided to ignore the error but this thread might help
- Installing TWRP while the stock rom is installed led to the problem that touch didn't work in TWRP
- Entering a pin for the stock rom and then installing TWRP led to TWRP asking for a pin to decrypt my data. Apparently this is not the case if you use a stock image which is older
After flashing stock ROM ota and twrp installer zip the only way to get TWRP to respond to touch is if you disable screen lock and connect to your PC before booting TWRP.
I've found the most reliable way to flash factory images is do it manually with fastboot, latest platform tools installed and a Linux OS like Ubuntu or pop os.
But first do some research and get comfortable with fastboot commands. And dear god don't relock your bootloader unless you're ?% sure it's totally stock.
@schpongo,
Also, a good point to keep when flashing via TWRP is to flash/install ONE AT A TIME. As per the great @Az Biker, you should even reboot to the bootloader after each subsequent flash/install. So, in your case, it seems that you might/should be rebooting to the bootloader three times; one for TWRP installation, one for flashing the custom ROM, and one more for any other subsequent installation (i.e. custom kernel or custom font)...
Also, as it's been said before, but stock kernel doesn't play nice with touch commands on TWRP, and (usually) the only way around it is to reboot into bootloader using the adb command -- as opposed to holding the volume-down button or from an app.
I know you figured this all out already, but it might bear repeating just in case you didn't know and/or to help any other users here...

Yeah you can either use the "flash-all.bat" file that comes in the android p stock image zip or fastboot boot twrp.img and once booted into twrp just restore a backup. But you'll need to create a folder on you sdcard called TWRP. Then put a backup in it. I've even booted twrp then flashed pixel dust. It's not as critical as it was years ago when once you went up bootloader then downgraded which would cause bricking. At least I haven't run into any issues. Just make sure you turn off any lock screens and have "USB debugging" enabled.
If you are enrolled in the beta, just opt out on the website where you opted in. You'll get an OTA, which will wipe your device, so back up first. Just did this last night. Couldn't have gone any more smoothly.
For some odd reason when I rolled back my battery refuses to charge up to 100% any one else having this issue?
You have to have your phone unlocked... Yes, you will lose everything from internal memory, but can restore all your apps and settings.
I made this path twice, on beta 1 and now on beta 2.
First, make sure you have twrp. Back up on twrp everything but you will need only the data partition. Also don't forget to backup your internal memory (different from the data partition).
After that, just flash normally the last factory image from Pie, or at least the same version that you have on your nandroid backup.
After finish the installation, install again twrp. Go into twrp and restore ONLY the data partition!!! You can also restore the boot if you like (if you had magisk installed for instance). This worked flawless with me.
I repeat, no use if you try to restore ALL partitions on twrp!! At least with me, twrp would just reboot in the middle of restoring the system partition (no idea why that happened on beta 1 and now on 2). Second, the same if you try to flash factory image without the -w (without wiping internal memory), it just reboot every time it tries to enter android.

This is a bug that was fixed in Q. You can alternatively fix it in pie by flashing a kernel that has Q patches merged in.

Nexus 7 2013 won't get past Google logo after trying to update OS

I was trying to update the OS on my Nexus 7 2013. I was able to connect it to my PC and unlock it and erase user data using adb commands. But after that it will not go past the Google logo in Recovery or regular Start mode. When I run "adb devices" it does not show up, though my computer does see it since I can run the lock/unlock adb commands and they work. I have uninstalled/reinstalled different adb drivers for the devices. I've tried using 2 different PCs. I can not get adb to fully recognize the device. I tried the Skipsoft Android Toolkit, and it too reports "no device detected".
Have I completed bricked the device? Or is there some way out of this that I haven't though of/found on the internet yet?
I hope someone here can help me!
Thanks!
Assuming you're on stock, try flashing a factory image from Google themselves. This reflashes everything, like stock OS, recovery, bootloader, etc. I'd choose the latest version found here: https://developers.google.com/android/images#razor As long as you understand that this wipes data, then give this a shot and let us know the results!
I found the "Nexus Root Toolkit" windows app. It was able to communicate with the Nexus 7 and restore the factory ROM and I could get it to boot! Now, I've tried about a dozen times to install LIneage, but it keeps getting an error the point of trying to install the ROM, and I haven't figured out what the error means or how to correct it. I've tried multiple TWRP versions and Lineage OS versions. It's driving me nuts!

Are you trying to install the official version of 17.1? If so, you'll need to look at the install guide on the LineageOS website here: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/flox/install
As far as I can tell, you cannot use TWRP, or at least the official TWRP, with this image. You'll need to use the LOS 17.1 Recovery found on the downloads page. If you haven't already, you're going to need to repartition the device with the instructions found on the install guide that I linked.
If this isn't the ROM in question check out the thread for that ROM and see if anyone else has any issues with installation.

Thank you! I did manage to get 18.1 to flash and load, after using a repartiion tool I found. However, I can't get GAspps to load, saying there isn't enough room on the partition. Now, I'm trying to use NRT to get back to stock (like I was able to do earlier) but now it is getting stuck at the Android 6 startup animation (4 round icons). I'm wondering if it is because I ran the partition update and somehow have to put that back to get the stock ROM to work.
The only suggestion that I would have is to flash the smallest GApps package possible, and before flashing LOS 18.1, wiping pretty much everything, then flashing LOS and GApps. Since OpenGApps doesn't make an Android 11 package yet, I don't know much about the other package providers, but that's all that I can think of. Hope this helps!

I wound up flashing Stock Android 5.0 and it worked. Now I'm updating to 6 via the software upgrade in the OS itself. I feel like this thing is just too old and not large enough memory to handle a custom OS.

Help Needed - Reverting back to stock from Lineage - Google Pixel XL Marlin

So after years of never needing to create an account.....I am stuck. Hoping yall can help me out.
I HAD lineage OS installed and everything was working fine. I wanted to revert back to stock so that I could get the google photos unlimited upload back.
I HAD lineage recovery installed but now I am soft-bricked and cant get into recovery.
My bootloader is unlocked and fastboot is working.
When recovery was working, I tried to install the full OTA and that failed so that lead me to the Full Factory Image.
I try to run the flash-all.sh script and it does all sorts of failing. (See flashAllLog.txt) I believe the crux of this is:
When I installed LineageOS, my phone started identifying as a Pixel 3 which was strange but whatever. When I am trying to run this flash-all basically it says that my bootloader is newer and it needs an older version.
So then I thought well maybe I need to erase the slots (eraseLog.txt). Those all worked fine but I still couldnt flash all
So then I was thinking maybe if I just flash the bootloader manually (manualBootFlashLog.txt). But that failed as well.
Am I just boned here or is there an android wizard out there who can point me in the right direction. Please let me know of ANY other information I could possibly provide
Here are 4 options, there's more even tedious stuff you could try but Id start with these
1.) Have you tried to just use fastboot to BOOT into the recovery.img file from the factory image zip (not flash it) and then you can sideload the OTA from there?
2.) You can also try to edit the flash-all file so it doesn't re-flash the bootloader. Just flash system, data partitions etc.
3.) Try another factory image. I assume you tried to flash the latest Android 10 full factory image, maybe try an older one? Maybe even Android 8 or 9 and the just take the OTA update in settings.
4.) Also can try to boot (not flash) lineageos recovery to see if you can at least flash back into LineageOS (or maybe a different custom ROM, PixelExperience for example enables the unlimited Google Drive storage) to get a working device again.
