Wi-Fi and Bluetooth randomly won't turn on - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

I've had this phone for awhile now. Came from Taimen. S8+ before that..... Never had any issues until about 4 weeks ago. I thought it was the ROM I was on so I went Stock.....no good....then.....I tried Beta. Back to Stock no root/hacks. Keeps happening, intermittently. I'll come home from work, go to turn my Wi-Fi on and it won't turn on. Then I'll go to turn my Bluetooth on and it'll then just keep crashing. Sometimes it fixes with a reboot. Tonight it did not. I'm clueless. Never had an issue like this before that I couldn't fix myself. I've been on every ROM in the Forum trying to fix this last few weeks. No luck.
If at any time throughout the day I turn my Wi-Fi off I risk not being able to turn it back on. I did notice it seems to have a higher chance of working when mostly charged, but that may just be coincidence.
Any ideas?

most likely hardware issue, you're not the only one, contact pixel support.

Stock kernel? I have had the issue (no WiFi after kernel flash) with DU and EX for about the last month (worked fine before then). Have to flash my magisk_patched to revert the kernel to (in my case) Unicorn Blood.

Yea. Stock kernel. I thought it was a DU issue when it started. That was the 1st thing I bailed off of to try and fix it. I remember being surprised I was having an issue with DU on my device, which I had never experienced. I bought the device, problem free, off of Swappa last year in April. I don't have any kind of Warranty protections or anything that I'm aware of.

That is the only issue I have with DU, and since it is not the stock DU kernel it is hard to say where the compatibility issue lies. It started a few personal builds ago, and then before I installed another one I flashed EX even though I hadn't tried it on that build. It worked, and worked again on my next build. Then it failed on the next two, so I am just sticking with Unicorn Blood for the time being.
As for your issue, I do wonder if you don't still have some residual issues from your initial switch back to stock. After returning to stock, have you ben flashing OTA or doing flash-all? I would try a flash-all with -w intact. Change slots, and do it again. Then at least for a couple of times on and off your Wi-Fi leave the install base pretty lite to see if you have any conflicts without reinstalling a bunch of stuff. Sure sounds one of the image files (vendor or radio maybe) is bad.

So since DU, I've been on BETA.....clean....flashed to both slots....then to to July Stock 10, Clean both Slots.....Tried the two newest ROMs in the Forum.....now I'm on straight-up stock, clean flash-all, both slots, stock kernel.....My gut is telling me it's hardware but a part of me is in denial. My phone is still in Mint condition so it's hard for me to imagine it's broke but Uncle Google's been making some mistakes in the manufacturing of things lately so......I might be sh1t outta luck. I have unlimited data....it's the Bluetooth thing..... that's REALLY REALLY annoying.

I'd be in denial too. My last thing to check would be the Wi-Fi itself. Maybe some sort of compatibility issue with the phone of another issue. Do you have any other remembered networks that you get onto after being off Wi-Fi and returning to range? Same possibility with BT. Unfortunately, it is common with all BT connections to occasionally miss a reconnect.

I'm doing some digging on this issue. It does appear to be a community wide issue as stated by the user a few posts up, unfortunately.

Thanks for chiming in fellas. Appreciate it.

Is your EVO soft resetting automatically or on its own?

Mine just started to after lunch today. I've had it on the desk and saw it restart about 3 times in less than a 15 minute window.
How do I know this just started and it hasn't been going on in my pocket? Well over the weekend I would have heard it reset (since it's not on silent/vibrate like it is at work). It also significantly drains the battery more if you are constantly soft resetting it/turning it off and on.
So is anyone else having this issue? I need to figure out if it was just a freak occurrence or if something is wrong with it.
I did NOT root it, running everything stock - I did some updates on some apps I have installed but no new programs installed in a couple of days - again this just started happening today in the last couple of hours.
And besides email and messaging, I'm not running anything in the background like Pandora or eBuddy, so I don't think it's a program causing it to reset.
Edit:
Not sure if this is the best category for the thread, but I could not find any threads similar to this besides the battery issue in general. Apologies if this thread already exists somewhere.
No uncalled for restarts here. Open the back, pull the battery, check the contacts? Is it plugged in when it does this? Try padding the battery with a folded piece of paper between the door and battery to ensure a snug fit. If it still does that, time to go to a store.
@Jye75
Thanks, I have pulled out and looked at the battery. I have that Seido case they were slangin' at Best Buy on it, I don't think there's an issue with the contacts.
One weird thing is during one of the automatic restarts, the phone made the start up sound. I had the phone on vibrate and the start up before that (and after when I manually restarted it) did not have a tone. Very odd... perhaps it's possessed.
Odd indeed... drop by a Sprint store, would be my next move.
It happened to me two times today since I did the full root last night. The last time it happened, I clicked on a input field and it restarted...
I had the issue when I turned off "enable always on mobile data"...turning it back on stopped the resets.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701540 <-- no one said much in my thread about it
Probably just a kernel panic. I would not worry about it too much. It's happened to me on my Hero, and on my Evo.
For comparison purposes, how often does OS X Kernel Panic? How often does Windows BSOD?
Android is rather new technology in comparison. Yes, it runs Linux, which is rather mature at this point, but it's built with a lot of new technology, which may not be as mature as the stock kernel itself.
/two cents.

It reset about 8-10 times in less than 2 hours. More than half of that time the phone was in my pocket and not in use. I hardly got a signal inside of Walmart so it's not like I was using it that much in there.
I have set the data to be always on and hopefully this will help...
I appreciate all the help guys!

I had the same exact thing happen to me beginning this past weekend. It was driving me insane since it was rebooting every 30 minutes or so. I noticed it started happening more so when I did not have good signal. In any case I came to the conclusion it was all the tinkering (root part 1 and custom ROM) I've done with the phone so I wiped it last night and started from scratch (root part 1 and 2 and custom ROM). No reboots yet, but seeing your post concerns me since it's not the first post I've read regarding this issue. I'll keep you posted if mine keeps doing it. I really hope it's not a real issue, getting a replacement does not seem like it will be an easy process at the moment with them constantly selling out.

Thanks for the input. Your concern about the difficulty in getting a replaced unit due to them selling out is EXACTLY why I'm trying to figure out if this is a software glitch.
I'm also glad you pointed out that it tended to happen when the signal was ****ty. Last night I enabled the data always on (it was on by default and I turned it off earlier in the weekend) and I haven't had a reset yet this morning. Of course I've also been in good coverage areas. When it kept resetting like mad last night it was inside of Wal-Mart, and they have some serious shielding on their building or something since I rarely get a full or even half signal in there regardless of carrier or phone in past experience. A lot of friends on Altell/Verizon beg to differ with me though.
I'm thinking if they're connected, the fact that a weak data signal contributes to the device rebooting is really odd; the only time I can think of why a phone should reboot on its own is the OS crashes (or some app takes up ALL the available RAM, freezing it, then crashing it) or it overheats (but would seem to turn off rather than reboot). I had a BB Curve that did this at one point so I had to clear the cache all the time.
Edit:
Actually, I realized when it started to happen it was at work where I have excellent reception. Hmmm... well at least it hasn't reset on its own this morning so far (so far meaning 30 minutes).

Well for what it's worth, mine was also doing it in good signal areas as well. It just seemed a lot more pronounced when I was getting bad signal. Anywho I reread your original post that you are running stock software so let's see if it keeps occuring for both of us regardless of the differences in software we are running. I also still have "Enable data always on" off.

Sounds like a plan. Still no problems so far with data always on.
FWIW I also did the battery trick by switching the phone to CDMA auto from GSM auto. Supposedly you have to do it everytime you boot your phone, and it's supposed to help with battery life. Thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700601
It has to have something to do with turning off always on mobile data. It goes away when it's on, but then comes back when you turn it off. I just did rooted and unlocked nand protection on my phone last night and turned off always on mobile data and haven't had any reboots yet. Then again, it took a little while for it to start resetting last time so we'll see I guess. Could just be some glitch in the software that putting a new rom on has fixed...

I had this happen to me while I was trying to talk on the phone and use google navigation at the same time while running the Overclocking widget to throttle my cpu to 285mhz when the screen was off. Whenever I turned off the screen my phone would reboot.
My guess is that there some issue there where the cpu cant keep up with the heavy usage, locks up and forces a reboot...
I've since gotten rid of the OC widget, rooted my phone and installed a custom rom. I've not had it happen since, of course I havent tried talking and using google nav yet.
I've also noticed that advanced task killer caused the htc sense launcher to reboot (force killed) every once in a while... I've gotten rid of that too...
happend to me while talking on the phone twice, it was weird i could hear him still talking the entire time it was rebooting, up untill the OS actually launched...Im gunna try and kill set cpu, how many other people have this running while its rebooting???

This happened to me today, in-call. My phone has reset 6 times since then off-call.
Alright un-installed setcpu and it still resets. I'm now trying to shim my battery to see if its a loose connection. I gotta figure this out its driving me crazy...
UPDATE: still hapining with battery shined, tried both data sync on and off, installed setcpu, all to no avail... maybe I will try a hard reset... I remember on my kaiser this started hapinin and it was a bad nand flash, but I'm running stock with unrevoked... so if anyone has any ideas I'm wide open.

Wow dude I'm sorry to hear you're having that much trouble. I'm on step 2 of part 2 of Toast's root method but running into major issues. Since I did step 1 (and before that I enabled data always on again) I haven't had a reset issue.
For the record, my Hardware version 2.
Do you guys think this is a widespread or isolated issue? I'm surprised it hasn't happened more or less, in other words I figured there would be either a lot or hardly any comments about it. This medium sized number is interesting.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus Dropping Data?

So normally I run my phone on Wifi because it saves battery when i'm on my university campus all day. So last night I headed off campus and so I turned off WiFi, and it didn't want to connect to data. Just sat there (with full service) but no data connectivity. So I rebooted the phone. still no connection, turned on airplane mode and then back off, now it worked but only for about 3 minutes I had 4G with blue sync and everything, then it dropped off. I went out into a rural area and I kept having full signal but no 3G. So I thought it was the rom. I was running AOKP b25 (Team Kang) so I just updated to Milestone 4. Everything was going well in initial setup of the phone, I had 4G signal, then halfway through setup the 4G dropped off. So I turned on Wifi and got everything setup. Turned off Wifi and it hooked to 4G almost immediately. Then about 3 minutes later, it dropped again. So at this point i'm really hoping it's not my phone and it's Verizon. I've never had a single issue before (i've had the phone since December) with data not connecting like this. It just started last night, which made me think it was Verizon and maybe it had to do with the Solar Flares or something? Has anyone had a similar issue and have any idea of what I might try?
Hi
I was just about to post the same thing. I'm experiencing the same, Data and service keeps dropping, I just got the phone Wednesday and since then It's been doing it. It's very frustrating, and I'm also on Verizon.
Someone else experiencing the same? Could Verizon be the responsible here and not the phone?
And if it helps, i'm located in Norman, OK

It's the phone, there's numerous threads about it (the Verizon version.) There's an expected software fix supposedly coming out this month sometime to fix it, that's all we know.
If it's the phone and an update will fix it, then why is it still doing it with a custom ROM? Do the custom ROMs not have the fix in place? I was under the impression that most of the things Verizon releases OTA to fix issues dont' happen in custom ROMS.

Samsung is going to hopefully release a radio update that fixes it, which isn't found in custom rom's because it hasn't been released outside of samsung yet.
It's kinda weird though that this JUST happened last night suddenly, the signal has been flawless since I bought it so that's why I thought it was Verizon because I guess I figured if it was the phone it would have been doing it all along and not stop working all of a sudden.
It's the phone and a software update won't fix it. I've tried every radio out there, none solved the issue. I got the phone swapped over a week ago, it is still stock, and the issue hasn't returned. Theres an ongoing thread over at rootz about this.
I can't post the link but it's there. many members are reporting that replacing the device solves the issue.
this was verizon. it happened to me, went away by itself.
that being said, ive had the best handoffs using the 4.0.4 and 4.0.3 radios. try one of those, or a hybrid package.
I went to the Verizon store and they gave me a new SIM Card. Now it works!

First of all you don't know what you're talking about. It may be a hardware issue it may be a software issue. There is no way to tell at this point. You are trying leaked radios, good job that proves nothing. If Samsung is aware of the issue and working on a new radio you haven't tried it yet. Sit back and relax until the update comes out. Then we can go from there.

Wow dude, no need to get insulting. I was merely sharing my experience with a frustrated OP. If you want to blindly believe that there can't be anything wrong with certain devices, until the manufacturer comes out and says it, then more power to you. You are the consumer that ever manufacturer loves. Myself and many others over at Rootzwiki have found success by having our devices replaced. When I tell you that it is night and day difference, it is not a lie.
I agree with you about the leaked radios. If they don't work then it proves nothing. They are leaked and probably not finished. The reason I mentioned them in the first place is because many people tend to suggest trying them to solve signal issues. I was explaining that I have tried them and it did not work. What worked was swapping the defective phone.

Bad radios

For a couple of months now I have had issues with my radios. From text messages not sending, to wi-fi cutting in and out. Usually turning airplane mode on, then off fixes it. But I need a permanent solution. I updated to the latest available RUU and stayed stock to test things out. I did a factory reset in hboot. I am at my wits end with this issue.
Before I send it off to HTC again for repair, does anyone have any ideas? I am sure that my radio are screwed deep in the system. My phone was the first M7VZW to ever run a custom ROM, and FlyHalf's early test builds were far from perfect. ( don't hear me wrong, he did an amazing job getting CM on this phone and I am forever grateful ) I think that some of those early builds really screwed something up.

Yeah, i'm an idiot, sorry.
If it persists across roms and an intermittent issue, could it be a hardware issue? Did you update the radios and then notice it right away?

Any luck with this? I can relate. I'm running the latest radio (1.13.41.0109_2) and have terrible reception issues as well. I've tried returning to stock, re-flashing, etc. and nothing seems to work - no LTE, and a weak signal at best most of the time. If I shut the phone off for a few minutes and restart I'll get an LTE signal for about 20 minutes then it reverts back to 3G. I can send receive texts, but call quality and data is terrible.
I'm currently running CM11 and I'm S-Off, Unlocked. HBoot 1.56.0000; Radio 1.13.41.0109_2
Update on this:
I went to a store and got a free SIM card 3 days ago. Wow, what a difference. Problem completely eradicated.
I've sent at least 50 texts so far and every single one sends within 1-2 seconds.

No Charge Without Re-Boot [Un-Solved - It's Baaack]

I've noticed recently (~3 times in last couple weeks), my Pixel XL will not start charging unless I re-boot, from 25%-35% charge. I've swapped chargers (Nexus 5X vs Pixel XL) and USB-C cables without success.
A simple reboot fixes the issue, but is a bit of a pain.

I have this same problem! I have had it since getting the pixel with root, custom kernel. Thought it was the kernel but the device swears it has nothing to do with it.
I haven't had TWRP very long but it happens still. It's random, and a reboot always fixes.
I wish I knew the cause, but too annoying to run full stock unrooted to test lol.
I've had this issue as well even with stock. Completely random. I've since flashed Pure Nexus since it's release and haven't had the issue anymore.
Happened again this morning. Gah, no overnight charge.
Chatting with Brian at Google.
He jumped to "Sending a Replacement Phone" after about 2 mins of very basic discussion. Seems odd, but whatever. Seemed a pretty quick surrender...
I did inquire if this was a known issue. He said, No, probably just a rare scenario.
I'll probably run stock for a while on the new phone to see if this recurs. Then I'll return to root and monitor.

Interesting. I don't feel like getting it replaced, because I have a dbrand skin on it that would not transfer.

Hmm, how long have you been running on PureNexus? Sounds promising.

Since 1/6. I've actually had 3 problems with my pixel. Randomly not charging, volume buttons not working and times call quality. But so far haven't had any issues after flashing pure nexus. I did chat with support but wasn't a quick surrender.

I am almost certain it is a software issue. I am going to flash Dirty Unicorns soon I think which will hopefully fix the problem.

I am inclined to agree its a software issue, which is why I was surprised "Brian" offered a hardware replacement so quickly. I did very recently do a Factory Reset to address my "Double-Tap-To-Wake" issue (reset fixed it), so maybe this was his queue to not try yet another reset...

I think Google offering to replace units quickly isn't terribly surprising.
The cost for them to replace a unit is very low. They are probably shipping out a refurb, and are only paying for shipping costs. The unit that will be returned is surely fixable with ease and can be re-deployed to another user. This is a super low cost way of providing what appears to be excellent customer service to the end-user. Apple and other companies have done this for years and have been very successful.
EDIT: I am now on DU so I will let this thread know if I have any more charging issues.
Woke up this morning to charge my phone, didn't start charging. Rebooted to fix. Made a call and the call quality was like I was in a poor reception area. Oh well still happens at random. Think I'm ready for a replacement.

Well it happened to me last night on DU. I think I might be able to use this as a free replacement card down the road to get a refreshed unit. It's crazy that without touching the phone I can reboot it and it will work.
My replacement devices arrived last night - Pixel XL, 128GB, Black.
They are probably shipping out a refurb...

Especially with all the shipping delays, I fully expected this replacement would have been a refurb. By all appearances this replacement is new or at least a pristine refurb. Packaging and accessories were clearly new (that part is easy), but the phone's back, corners, edges and glass are all 100% flawless.
The phone appears to be playing well. Ran it on Daydream for 2:27 last night to watch a NextVR basketball game - no overheating, possibly sightly less drift than my old device.
Edit: My plan to hold-off rooting failed - I am unlocked & rooted, but kept the stock recovery vs TWRP (in anticipation of FlashFire).
Replacement Device received, unlocked & rooted. The issue returns after just one day! Reboot needed to re-charge. Blargh!
I should have used a little more discipline and not rooted right away - for science.
I am doubtful I'll revert to stock to test some more, but who knows.
Odd. Given that not everyone who is rooted has this issue perhaps sharing a list of mods/root apps and other apps that you installed on the new device could help to shed some light on where things to sour.
I seem to have had this issue ever since I rooted and installed ElementalX kernel. So it would appear that either I have a bad device, it's root, it's the elex kernel, or both root+kernel causes this.
I've modded emoji's but only once or twice, definitely had the issue on a fresh DU and PureNexus install with only root and kernel.
I am still questioning the charger, but not much because I also use the USB-a to USB-c cable connected to a cheap 1a chsrger at work with the same problem. So very unlikely it is the cable.

For me, still a most basic configuration:
- rooted (supersu 2.79-sr2)
- stock recovery
- stock kernel
- stock launcher
- no roms
At the moment, the only root-apps that possibly raise a flag as not fully stock. Nothing odd in this list as far as I can see:
- adaway (modified hosts file)
- titanium
- flashfire (not in use)
- rootchecker
- quickreboot
- tasker & autolocation
Next instance of no-charge, I'll try the brand new charger & cable from the replacement packaging.

It's strange if it is root causing it, why has nobody else mentioned anything? I'm glad you get it on the stock kernel, so that rules that out.

I'm not rooted and my bootloader is not unlocked and still have this issue from time to time. So pretty sure it has nothing to do with root. Trying to use some usb-c headphones once (they didn't work) did trigger it immediately. It's likely going to be related to the usb-c port in some way, possibly a firmware issue?
I also randomly encounter this problem. I already returned 1 pixel xl that quit charging, completely stock, a reboot did not fix it. On my second device and still occurs occasionally seems like it takes a week or so and a reboot fixes, so not sure what the problem is. Still completely stock.

Question Verizon calling problems

Lately, I have been having trouble calling and receiving phone calls. I often get an exclamation point next to the cell phone signal icon. Sometime the exclamation goes away. Other times, I get a message that the cellular network is not available.
I tried the following:
Reseating the SIM
Resetting the network settings
Toggle airplane mode
Switch Preferred network between LTE and 5G
Results are inconsistent, so I am coming the XDA to see if others have seen this or have suggestion for a fix.
EDIT: Seems to be a common problem, with no clear fix.

thanks
I had the same problem on Orange network in France but the last android 13 beta (3.2) solved the problem.

The last option you have before warranty is to re-flash the device. It's worth a shot... When flashing, be sure to enable wipe and force flash partitions (by hitting the pencil for advanced options located on the flasher page).
Google's web flash tool is here.
mine has been doing the same, seems to be really bad last few weeks too. I was planning to do a full reset and see what that does. Good to now about the A13 beta, as that was my next step if full factory reset/flash doesn't help. Thanks for this thread.

The cellular service has definitely gotten worse in the last few weeks. Maybe the June update broke something.
Hard for me to image that I factory reset would help. Can you let us know how that goes for you?
Let's hope the cell service gets better with the July update.
will do. I'm gonna have to do something. Lost connection 3 times today alone. Annoying.
I'm going to flash the modem files from Android 13 beta to the June update. Someone with a P6 said that this worked for them.
I just ran the following and see an immediate improvement!
fastboot flash radio radio-raven-g5123b-102852-220609-b-8701566.img
EDIT: I spoke too quickly. Still getting "!" and "mobile network not available"
EDIT2: Since this problem appears to have started for me with the June update, I am going to flash the May update modem file and see how that works. Just ran "fastboot flash radio radio-raven-g5123b-97927-220225-b-8226700.img" Stay tuned.

Unfortunately, I don't think that's the issue. The radio sucks and no amount of software updates or down-dates will fix it. If you need it for work then what I would do is sell it and buy a different phone until they come out with a new device that is as good as the P5. I can be without signal and data for close to 15 minutes while my wife and her P5 never once lost it. Once the ! hits the signal bar it will take me a minimum of 5 - 10 minutes to come back unless I reboot the phone. Then it's only about 5. If I needed it for business or critical functioning I wouldn't be on this forum any longer. Oh yeah, other than that the phone is great. Well... other than mediocre battery life and a FPR that will never success after a shower or swim. And I do mean never.
I decided against a full wipe/install of June update, and just went for the A13 beta 3. Flashed it via the android flash tool, then rooted with magisk. Setting up apps and things now, so I'll report back when I know more. I wanna love this phone, but it has been hard. Hoping this is better. I'll try to probably manage with this until the 7 comes out.
also for what its worth, swift backup is nice. Restoring my apps and data now, the few I have tested all work as if I didn't update/wipe my phone. Really makes it nice

Looking forward to hearing about your experience with A13 and if it improves your cellular service.
I would say on my experience, Beta 3 has gotten better but should've been fixed months ago before it was released. I am going to wait a while before I got buy another phone in general

Are you getting reliable cellular connections with Verizon using Beta 3? Do you ever get the exclamation point of no service?

Maybe once in the last week
Getting the same here. Last few weeks have been unbearable. Was just down in the Smoky Mountains on my motorcycle for a week. Spotty coverage is to be expected. But I would get back to town and have to reboot to get coverage again. Still it often went back to the explanation mark after reboot.
This modem is crap, I may break out the Note 20 my kid gave me. I will hate it, but at least I can make calls and text.

And how we tried. It's just a shame they released this device with hardware that is not useful for network connectivity. And how do we migrate to a P7 after this without making sure they didn't screw up again? I'm at a loss at this point. I'll give it until A13 final and then sell it if nothing changes. I just don't know where to turn but to me the iPhone 13 6" might be it sorry to say. I just can't deal with this crap much longer. Sucks huh?
well after today, I would say its better. But time will tell. Went out several times to different places and I never lost connection. I'll keep you all updated. I will say that on the beta the phone feels much faster and the FP reader seems better too.
I keep saying that I love this phone, and hate it at the same time.

Just wondering if you've tried the latest beta using the flash tool and choosing the options wipe and force flash all partitions (which reinstalls all the firmware on the phone).
It would be super frustrating to have signal issues. I've also heard some users who still had issues after re-flashing, were able to get replacements from Google Support.

Not yet. I was going to wait for the fall release of A13 before I wiped and finally gave up. It's not often enough, although frustrating, that I have to rely on a reboot to restore connectivity since mostly I've learned to just look the other way, shake my head and wait the 15 minutes. The point being they should never have released this last October with all the fpr issues and radio malfunctioning. This has been ongoing for 9 months already in various iterations. I don't think any other device has these issues other than the P6 series.
