My Firestick 4K isn't rooted, but I need to apply custom settings from a file to a specific App. I already pushed that file onto my Firestick 4K with ADB commands. The problem is that Apps that can browse through storage files on my Android phone can't do that on Firestick. Browsing through storage simply isn't available on Firestick. Is that due to lack of storage access permission? How can I allow storage access via ADB remote commands? Firestick OS App Management setting doesn't even list storage permission access...

Grant storage permission via ADB
Code:
adb shell pm grant <package-name> android.permission.READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
adb shell pm grant <package-name> android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
Example
Code:
adb shell pm grant com.microsoft.office.word android.permission.READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
adb shell pm grant com.microsoft.office.word android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
Thank you, but that that app still opens the white screen with "Open from" in upper left corner and lists Recent, Owner's Fire TV, and ES File Explorer. The problem is that it does not show any files and does not allow me to select ES File Explorer. The files I need to import do exist because ES File Explorer does see them Downloads folder, to where I adb-pushed those files. I need to get Firestick OS to use ES File Explorer as a default explorer or as an app that launches when some other app tries to launch Firestick OS default built-in Files app. Or maybe there is a way to push .JSON settings file onto whichever app...
I think I can get it to work if I can get this command to work:
adb shell pm grant com.android.providers.downloads android.permission.READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
Operation not allowed: java.lang.SecurityException: Cannot grant system fixed permission android.permission.READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE for package com.android.providers.downloads

Currently my KF2 is running stock amazon OS (10.4.3), and I rooted the device following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2075959
I believe it has been rooted successfully, as I am able to use Titanium Backup and grant root access to ES File Explorer. I also downloaded some root checker app from google play store to double check if it has root privileges.
As I want to flash CM10.1 to my KF2, I have been following Hashcode's guide to install a 2nd bootloader http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2100963. I am getting stuck with Step 3. I get the following error:

Can you navigate to your '/data/local' directory and confirm that you do have a 'tmp' folder?

Using ES File Explorer, I can navigate to '/data/local' directory and I can see a 'tmp' folder.
Problem solved. Instead of using "adb push", I just place the file into '/data/local' manually. The rest of the steps went fine!
No data/local/tmp folder...
So i go into my ES file explorer and i go to my data folder and it shows that i have no local folder, i actually have no folders in this directory. how would i create a local/tmp folder so i can successfully S-OFF my phone?
There are folders in there, key thing is in order to see them you need root. Its weird like that, they might show up over and adb shell if you
Code:
adb shell
cd /data
ls
Or for a more formatted column listing use "ls -n", it will also display permissions of files and folders.

Hi all. Previously I installed and ran XBMC gothem. Yesterday I tried side loading KODI and Gothem builds, Arm versions downloaded from XBMC website
KODI won't even give a successful reply in cmd. XBMC gives success reply but doesn't show up in Firetv afterwards.
Both refuse to install in sideloaded es file manager.
Weirdest thing is, yesterday after failing on both, Llama sideloaded without issue.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Let's go over and make sure we cover the basics of sideloading on the AFTV.
Go to settings/system/developer options and be sure that ADB debuggin is turn on and that Install from unknown sources is also on.
run cmd
type: adb kill-server + enter
type: adb start-server + enter
type: adb connect [your ip address here] + enter
Once connected, make sure you navigate to the folder where the apk is. example "cd C:\Users\user name\Downloads"
I use Linux so I would type "cd /Downloads"
type: ls + enter (that's the letter L by the way... this will show you all the files in your current location. If you don't see your apk, then you're not in the correct location)
type: adb install [apk name here] + enter
If this still doesn't work, go to settings/system info and find out how much storage you have available.
Also, if you are not that comfortable using command line, then use and use this program instead:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786505
Beware not to go messing around with this program if you do not know what you are doing. Simply use the isntall APK feature.

One more thing, maybe your XBMC and Kodi files are corrupted or you downloaded the wrong versions. Delete those apk files and start again.
This time, be sure you download these:
Kodi (14.0)
http://mirrors.xbmc.org/releases/android/arm/kodi-14.0-Helix-armeabi-v7a.apk
XBMC (Gotham 13.2)

Hi. Sorry if this is in the wrong area.
Is there a way to take apps off the fire tv such as hulu etc that can be then transferred to a different user account.
I have 2 accounts that are used separately and have got usa apps via changing language etc then reverted back to uk. But I want to transfer these to my other device without having to change regions again.
Tried copying app to usb then transferring but that didn't work.
Any ideas please.
Thanks
I would suggest to use ADB. Especially the "adb install <insertnamehere>.apk" command
http://adbshell.com/commands/adb-install/how-to-use-adb-install.html
Hi thanks for that. I'm fine with installing the apps it is just how to get the app off the other decide to install on the the one. Does es file explorer back up apps ?
You could try an apk extractor app; no idea if this pulls the settings as well as the app.
You can copy APK from an Android device via ADB "pull" command to your PC
adb pull <remote> [<local>] - copy file/dir from device

1.) connect via ADB
2.) use ADB "pull" command for e.g.
Code:
adb pull /system/app "%~dp0\apk_backup\system_apps"
This pulls all preinstalled system apps and stores them in the local subfolder /apk_backup/system_apps
3.)
Code:
adb pull /data/app "%~dp0\apk_backup\data_apps"
Similiar as 2.) but for user installed APKs.
I managed to get one done but when I transferred it to my other box it wouldn't open and said that I didn't own it !! Any ideas ?
Can not tell for sure but some apps may require additional libraries from /system/libs.
Perhaps the app also checks for the existance of the Amazon appstore app. I donĀ“t know if there is also an addtionally "hard" check which does check for the actual account on the installed app store.
Never tried this on my own.
Hi all,
Upon changing accounts I get the usual "App not owned" error.
I know that it's easy to rectify by simply adding it to the account which is currently associated with the device, but I wondered if there is a "cleaner" way.
Of course another solution is simply "adb connect 192.168.1.xx" and "adb install app.apk" but this is still very annoying to do each time.
I have root access but I wonder if it's possible to change app permissions through "adb shell > su" in some way.
Is it possible to get rid of this error by changing the app permissions with adb? Thanks so much for all your help on this forum as it's always amazing.

Changing app permission via ADB:
Grant (Permitted)
Code:
adb shell pm grant <package-name> <permission>
//Example
adb shell pm grant com.facebook.orca android.permission.GET_ACCOUNTS
Revoke (Unpermitted)
Code:
adb shell pm revoke <package-name> <permission>
//Example
adb shell pm revoke com.facebook.orca android.permission.GET_ACCOUNTS
Thanks so much mate, really appreciated, I wish you an endless supply of sugar-food/alcohol of choice.

Heya,
so I tried that with a package while I had superuser access and got an error:
Operation not allowed: java.lang.SecurityException: Package uk.co.bbc.iplayer has not requested permission android.permission.GET_ACCOUNTS
I assume that the command has to be issued while the application was launched? However it still doesn't work.
I was hoping to get a way so the app is considered "owned" by the device even if the account is changed.
My OnePlus 9 Pro is rooted. I tried seeing the protected system files such as those in /data from my computer in the following ways and none of the work. (I can see these files with Root Explorer on the phone).
1) command line using "adb shell", "ls -l", "cd data", and then "ls -l". The first two commands work, but I get "Permission denied" on the last command.
2) The Google application "Android File Transfer" running on my Mac
3) The Mac application "MacDroid"
4) The open source application "OpenMTP"
Alls of these lead to only seeing the files in the simulated SD card. How can I did deep into the Android file system from my computer, while the phone is connected?
Thanks in advance
@tk_xda
Put su -c before the ls command, or open a root shell by running su. You also need to have superuser access for adb enabled to use this command.

Thanks. Is there any way to get this level of access using the other utilities I named, or is the only way from the computer through adb commands?
@tk_xda
You can also use a terminal app to open a shell locally on the device. Be careful and don't run
Bash:
rm -rf /*
It will make a painful brick of it.
Have fun!

Do a TWRP backup and open it on the computer with 7zip
(editing system files while the system is ON can lead to crash ...)

No, you could use Termux on phone, similar to adb

I would want to access a small group of files on the computer. Copying an entire backup from the phone would be cumbersome. Typically, I might like to get nosy about the database tables an app uses to store its data and would want just the data for an app.
I would not be editing system files unless I have a specific informed purpose, but would like to be able to copy any of them to my computer that I choose to examine.

I have Root Explorer app on the phone and can rummage with that when I desire to rummage into something on the phone. My current workaround when I want a few system protected or app data files is to copy them with the Root Explorer into the simulated SD card, and then get the data from there with the computer. By this post, I was hoping to navigate more directly just by connecting the phone to the computer and copying what I want.

Some things are easy and some are not. It can't be about shortcuts all the time. Sometimes the reward takes some effort!

Even if you found a way to mount "data" it will be encrypted (unless you running an old rom or flashed DFE before ...)
