My question is, does the desire actually have facial recognition, and what does it actually do?
I know it has the setting to put it on, but i cant see any difference with it on or off??
where is the option for facial recognition? i have not seen this anywhere
maybe it can be used to unlock the phone? that would be good

On the camera, I have no idea, i doubt it.
Face detection its called, in the camera settings.
Is for the camera,
Point it at someone's face and a box will appear around it and it locks onto the face to give a clearer picture.

That what i thought it would do, but mine doesnt.
More like face recognition. The camera just recognizes faces, and will focus on them automatically.
Funny thing, try drawing a face as complex as you can, or find a pic on google
Open it up in a graphics editing program and start erasing parts, see how much you can remove before it no longer recognizes it ^_^
that would be cool... like the bar scanner but for face
Hi guys
I'd love to be able to take pics, without unlocking the phone. For example when walking around and you see something you'd like to take a pic of, it takes a bit of time to first unlock, find the icon for the camera and start it up. Is it in any way possible to make an app that opens the camera when long-pressing the camera button and then when you push the back button or turn off the phone, it would go back to being locked. Even though it's unlikely to happen, I'm guessing it would have to enable the proximity censor, if you long press it, just to make sure it's not by accident when in a pocket, bag or something.
Hope this is possible.
Cheers

if you use widgetlocker you can make a slider on the lockscreen with a shortcut to the camera

yes i've tried this, though it takes a while to load the camera, it does work.
One thing that I liked about ICS is quick access to camera from the lock screen - but it wasn't secure. You can only select one method of locking from the Security list in Settings.
Is there a way (current, or can someone create) to use some of those locking mechanisms in serial instead of selecting just one?
Current from Lock Screen:
Camera <--Swipe --> Use Phone
(no security) OR
Face Unlock --> Use Phone
(no camera)OR
Pin --> Use Phone
(no camera)
Requested:
For example using on the lock screen:
Camera <--Swipe --> Face Unlock -> use Phone
(the camera can start to load as soon as the power button is hit, so by the time you swipe either direction, it's loaded and ready)
I tried Go Locker but it was too heavy and created a lot of lag.
Wouldn't do any good, once in the camera app hitting home would take you home even if there is a lock screen password/pin/other lock mechanism

BUMP.
I also REALLY miss this feature. Just think of the advantages.
I use my phoen a lot just to see what time it is, because I don't where a watch every day. Everytime I turn the screen up it fires up the front cam which can't really be that good for the battery. Plus, it's such a burden having to choose between fast acces to the camera and NO security or any kind of security but no fast access to the camera.
Anyone know of an app that can do this? Slide left: Face Unlock. Slide right: Camera.
And to vlx600d: that's not true. Phones with ICS have the same feature. Unlock to camera, take pictures. Press the home button and you get back to the unlock screen.

This needs framework changes that deal with security, etc. No app can change how the os handles the face unlock process. You can try posting in gummy/aokp/cm9 threads. Maybe one of the developers would accept to make this mod.
I really dont think this would work without some serious reworking of the OS.
i remember there being a bug with a phone (cant remember which one) where, when using a secure lock screen, they could press the "emergency call" button, then just hit the home button and they were in. same concept here. if you could do this, once in the camera app, all you would have to do is hit "home" and you would be in.
The whole reason is fit fast access. Its no longer fast if you have to put in a code or wait for it to recognize it. Thus defeating the purpose to have the option. I understand the complaint though, its definitely not fair that you can't go straight to it if you want your phone safe.

I've just discovered that my gyro sensor doesn't work. I am running rooted stock 4.1.1. The phone can not detect tilt movements. And under Settings->Motion->Sensitivity settings->Gyroscope calibration, the blue dot does not move from the center, no matter which orientation the phone is held. All of the options under Motion don't seem to work. I just want to see if anybody else has the same problem before calling TMobile.
Firstly, this should have been posted in the q&a section.
And the blue circle isn't supposed to move. You lay the phone on a flat surface and it calibrates itself.

Sorry for posting in the wrong section. You are right about the blue dot not moving. I downloaded a few apps that detect sensors and all built-in sensor seem to be working as they are supposed too. I have problem for example of taking screenshot with a palm wipe or zooming picture by tilting the device, muting phone by turning it over, etc. None of these features work on my phone. Will try to explore more to see what the real problem is.

Do you have the switch turned on next to motion in the settings?

Before you go off the deep end, run the test on the sensor.
in the stock dialer:
Quick Test Menu
*#7353#
select the accelerometer tester and ilt the phone whatever way you want. If the arrows don't change, then the sensor isn't working. If the Arrows do change, then all good, no panic necessary...
Good Luck
Aloha
Thank you for your help. I ran the sensor test and the sensors work. I also turned on the Motion switch but the Motion features still don't work for me. Maybe this is a software issue. I will continue to explore and will report back if I've found something.

Hi,
Please do the following:
Pull the top notification bar down by using a downward swipe.
Tap on the Toothed Wheel in upper right corner
scroll down till you see the System divider (below the Add account line)
is Motion ON on the right side of it? if not, turn it on.
Tap on the word Motion
Are any of the options you want to use set with a check in the box?
if not, put the check in whatever you want to use by tapping on the box on the right of the function.
Example:
If you want to use Palm swipe for screen captures, tap on the box on the right of the option.
the boxes toggle these options so if you want the option off, then tap on the checkmark and it'll go off.
When you're done, click on the back button on the right side of the menu bar below the screen till you get back to the homescreen.
You are done, and the selected options should now function.
simple huh?
Thank you, bobolinko. I've been doing exactly what you described and no motion feature works for me. I begin to think that my software has a problem, because it does crash occasionally and software upgrade check hangs forever in the "checking for software updates..." screen and never comes back, no matter if I am on wifi or on 4G. Let me reinstall stock firmware and report back.
Try it like this:

Also, has it EVER worked?
Thanks!

Thanks for the video. I did exactly as shown and nothing happens. I never tried Motion before until I needed to capture my screen and discovered that it doesn't work for me. In the mean time, using PWR and HOME button at the same time does allow me to capture the screen, so I don't really need Motion feature working for me. I am just thinking that my software has a problem and I will need to reinstall stock. Thanks a lot for your help in any case.

im having the same issue. tried the accelerometer test and tilt the phone every which way but the arror didnt move at all. does that mean the accelerometer is done with. any fix for it?
also tried tsp dot mode, tsp grid mode, proximity and light sensors and nothing seems to happen during the test
Usually when I want to capture something on film (camera or camcorder) by the time I've got my phone unlocked and the app opened the event I wanted to capture is long over with.
So what's the fastest setup you guys can come up with for activating the camcorder (or alternatively the camera, but if I had to pick one I'd rather it be the camcorder)? Also I should add that I still want a lock screen for halfway secure general access to my phone.
The best I've come up with so far for camcorder access is a desktop action plus the "mashcord" program. This sequence clocks in at
power button
unlock pattern
double tap anywhere on desktop -- loads camcorder
press record button inside camcorder program
As far as some details as to why I like "mashcord" so far vs various other camcorder shortcuts:
always opens directly to camcorder, not just "camera or camcorder, most recent of the two"
when it opens the camcorder, it still has the "switch to camera" option available, not grayed out
But when operating in a hurry the above is still a very long sequence. Another thing I found is "Photo Button - Spy Camera" which manages to activate the camera with a double press of the volume button (when the phone is off and locked). This is very close to what I want. Negatives of this program are
no way to set what camera options are used: for example it always takes the pic with the flash on
is camera, I'd like camcorder
One last thing: I am rooted, so if a solution involves something like editing /system/usr/keylayout/gpio-keys.kl etc (which I did to keep the home button from turning on the phone in my pocket) I'm okay with that.
Thanks for any and all recommendations.
it's possible to unlock straight to the camcorder if you get widgetlocker.
assign the right slider to a launcher shortcut>activities>camera>camcorder (assuming you use a touchwiz rom) and the left slider to unlock.
if you use an AOSP based rom the camcorder is under "gallery" instead of "camera"
this way it would be power button> slide to unlock> record button.
if you really want to use an unlock pattern it's still not going to be very fast.
Could you not use the xposed module which allows the camera to be accessed from the lockscreen even with a pin/password? Then you should be able to use the motion thing where you put a finger on the screen and rotate the phone to landscape to launch the camera.
I haven't tried it myself as I'm not on a tw rom (which I assume you are) so I can't say for sure if this works, but there's no harm in trying.

I just add the camera to my lock screen.
Basically it's:
1) power on
2) swipe the camera icon to get to my lock pattern
3) enter lock pattern
4) take photo
I've tried the exposed mod to get straight into the camera without entering the lock code. It's good for a quick one off photo, but will kick you back to the lock screen if you try to review the photo or switch to camcorder mode.
