I've played with the face unlock feature and find it works quite well so long as you have adequate front lighting, but the main drawback is that it can easily be defeated by someone with a picture of you. But, if you added voice recognition you should be able to improve the security quite a bit.
I'm thinking that if you entered a voice sample of, say, 20 words so that when you press the power button to begin the unlock sequence the display lists two of the words you previously entered and, along with the face recognition, the unlock should be very secure and just about as fast.
So, as a sequence, here's what I'm thinking...
1. Press power button
2. Face recognition recognizes you, then
3. Phone prompts you with two words that you have two seconds to respond with, then
4. If both steps pass the phone is unlocked -- if either step fails you are prompted to enter password.
Allowing only a couple seconds to respond with two words at random should make it all but impossible for someone to use prerecorded voice samples to unlock your phone.
It would be a bit faster to do both steps at the same time but I don't know what effect your moving lips would have on the face unlock.

Yeah it'd be cool, but how is that more secure or quicker than a strong PIN or alphanumeric password with data encryption?
Not to mention that all the times you're in a dark or loud place and you can't do one or the other (or both) of those to unlock the phone. It will always have to have a backup PIN or passcode that must be strong (or stronger), or its pointless. Having the face/voice unlock super secure doesn't mean anything because it'll always fall back to the PIN when it doesn't work (which you'd hope is the case with an intruder), and the PIN can potentially be defeated.
wow, do people really have other people just dying to get into their phone??? Sorry, I'm just kinda surprised at the concern.

There are some people like that. And if its that bad they need to be using a corporate BlackBerry with serious encryption and remote wipe
I had my Evo 4G stolen in August so, yeah, security is an issue.
Using a 4 digit pin/password would likely be as fast as any other method but what if you're wearing gloves. Also, a 4 digit pin is not real secure.
Another option would be the inclusion of a finger print scanner. You'd still have issues with gloves but the security would be quite high and the response pretty fast.

Sure you could unlock the phone with your face/voice while wearing gloves... then what? still have to take off the gloves to use the phone eventually...
There are devices with fingerprint scanners too if you need that.
If you're worried about your phone being stolen, buy handset insurance and run a program like lookout that can offer remote tracking and wipe. Putting face/voice combo lock on the phone isn't gonna stop them from snagging the phone and wiping it though.
with the current generation of speech recognition, talking to the phone almost always ends up looking siri.. i mean silly. i cannot help but laugh at people who try to talk, get misheard and then yell very slow words at their phone instead of just typing. and its not like they are driving (i use voice while driving to navigate), they are sitting in their office cubes.
Face unlock is a convinience feature, not really for high security. I have never used pins or patterns to lock my phone. Personally, i find it annoying and time consuming to have to draw a stupid pattern to unlock my phone. I have never lost my phone and i am very careful with it. So for me face unlock is like the happy medium, it works fast and offers somewhat of security. I mean lets face it, what are the chances of someone finding or stealing your phone having a picture of you?

THIS.
I went back to just using the slide unlock.
What I'd like to be able to do ultimately is use Tasker to switch between unlock methods. Just slide when I'm at home or at work, but face unlock elsewhere.
Face unlock is good enough for a misplaced or stolen phone. More than likely, a misplaced or stolen phone won't be obtained by a spy who has photos of you. (Unless of course you are some type of important person... most of us are not!) A common thief, or just a dishonest person wouldn't have the means to get past the unlock feature.

This. Face unlock is used in place of slide to unlock, with a bonus of having SOME security. Even Google themselves said that this feature is not a foolproof way to secure your phone.
Actually you don't even need a picture, it worked off my dad's face and we don't look anything alike - at least to humans.

That's because you have to train it. Most people complaining that it doesn't work well only set it up one time. When you go back to face unlock, it allows you to train it multiple times in different lighting levels, eyewear, beard, etc to make it better. I have trained it in almost pitch black where all you see is my nose and everything is grainy and it still unlocks.
I barely even look at my phone now at it instantaneously unlocks. But then again I probably have over 30 different profiles with different lighting and clothes to make a fast match with almost no lag.
Hi there. How many of you like the Face Unlock feature in the GNex but find it annoying when the phone doesn't recognize your face and prompt you to the secondary unlocking method?
Well, I just noticed that ICS actually has an option called "Improve face matching" under settings->security which (I think) wasn't available in 4.0 and 4.0.1.
Just use it to take few more pictures of your face from different angles and in different light conditions. I just tried it and now my phone unlocks immediately even under low light or when held below my chin.
I know this isn't new news for a lot of you, but maybe a lot have overlooked it too.
Thank you
Nice, It seems to work better now!
Didn't catch that. Thanks! Cant wait to try it out.
Yea you should update your pic as often as you can in different environments to get a better response. I used it for a week and it got better the more I used it.
LTE EX Galaxy Nexus CM9
Asus Transformer Revolver
Mine rarely gets it from start, and the usual ratio is 60/40 or even worse.
Which made me ask myself: while setting up the fingerprint, is it better to slightly move around the finger (the unorthodox way), or to keep it as fixed as possible (as per instructions)?
I only have the device for two days, but I will test this and report back the results. For now, the fingerprint system seems crappy and on its way to be declared next to useless.
What ROM version are you on, apparently the latest ROM is better.
I haven't tested it yet, I will do later today and report back

I added another finger but used the same finger and now unlocks first time 90%

You are blessed. As I write this, I have six concurrent ”profiles” on the same finger. It still doesn't work from the first try.

strange, for me it really works without Problems.
maybe you do not have finger, hehe
on 8/10 it work's by the first try..
Rom is P8000_20150815
best regards
When a new fingerprint is set you need to touch the sensor ten times more or less. You just need to press the sensor in ten slightly different ways trying to record the full surface of your finger. As soon as I set my fingerprint this way I noticed that the smartphone unlock system performance was much better.
Hope it helps.

Thank you guys for the input and tips.
I have tried everything you suggested (and more), but to no avail.
Either my device has a crappy sensor, or I simply have some impossible fingerprints.
You could try flashing eragon, the fingerprint scanner works almost flawlessly for me after I switched roms.
I'm not glad with the sensor. But this can also be an effect of my really dry skin.
Only 25% success. :crying:
Until Eragon 4.0,I didn't use the fingerprint sensor.
It simply does refused to work most of the time. But since I flashed Eragon 4.0, it's make fun to use the fingeprint feature:
It works for me 3 out of 4.
We all have to be thankfull and cheer to skeleton1911, for his great work.
Cheers
P.S.: I heard rumours about, that he is not against donations.
For me I'd say it get my finger 70% of the time, in the first try. It used to be worse at about 50/50, but the latest update has made the situation better. But still it can be frustrating at times so I ended up disabling the fingerprint unlock.
I'd say that the problem is the small detection area. Elephone had so much space in the back yet they chose a very small scanner
Before I moved to the Eragon roms my sensor was very hit and miss and slow to unlock even if it read the print. Since moving to Eragon v3 (and now up to v4) it is almost 100% reliable and quick to unlock.
I have found the the fingerprint sensor works better in Eragon 3.5+, than in the stock ROM. However it is still mostly worthless. A couple of my fingers it gets first try around 80% of the time. The others can take many attempts before the phone will unlock.
Ergonomically, the sensor is not in a position that your finger naturally falls to. Getting your finger in to a position to achieve a good reading takes a bit of contortion, and as the phone doesn't have the safest of grip at the best of times, there is a good chance you could drop it whilst trying to unlock with your finger print!
I have a pebble watch, and use the android smart lock feature, so I rarely need to use the finger sensor.
My fingerprint works better than ever with iPhone 5s.
So for me very good, thanks for eragon ROM
Mine always works unless my finger is wet
i am on eragon 4.0 (based on stock rom)
on the Stock ROM 20151014 also worked without problems
I rooted my deviced on the second day that I took it out of the box, so I didn't play much with completely stock rom. However, I could still notice that after rooting, the fingerprint sensor wasn't as fast as it was. Today I flashed May factory image, because I have been facing some problem and I have to say, that IT FEELS LIKE A DIFFERENT PHONE. In a positive way, of course. With root, when the phones idled for 15mins sometimes it had 2-3 seconds of delay between placing the finger on the sensor and vibration of unlocking. Maybe for some of you it's not of a big deal, but I use it in 99% of unlocks, so it matters pretty much and affects impressions on the phone. Of course, after half an hour I started to feel that anxiety, fear and my hand started to shake, because of not having EXKM. Did you guys noticed those delays? I want to play with complete stock for a couple of days to see how it performs in smoothness and battery life and then I decide what to do.
I thought my mind was playing tricks on me since rooting and going on elemental kernel 4 days ago. But yup, there definitely is a lag in fingerprint recognition after going to sleep for a while.
Hey,
Did it happend with a custom rom like PureNexus ?
Sent from Nexus 5X using Tapatalk.
I haven't tested it with any custom rom yet.
Try before a rom to wipe cache etc.
Then make an backup and flash a rom.
Sent from Nexus 5X using Tapatalk.
I've noticed this too, on stock it was really fast, on stock+elementalx it has some delay
With root and TWRP, all the rest stock, i have not those 2 seconds of delay. It's fast as it should be.
So it must be ElementalX issue then.
Confirming, stock ROM + ElementalX and there's a brief lag here, too.
Might be an ElemantalX issue then yea. No delays with my stock rom + kernel device.
This thread is a perfect example of people that do things to their phones yet have no idea what is happening. It boggles my mind. Its pretty clear that no one here (this thread) knows what root is. If they did, well, they would be the ones posting this.
Simply becoming the root user cant break the fingerprint scanner. That's just ridiculous, asinine, retarded. Being the all-powerful superuser simply means you can make system level changes. It alone cant break things like a gun on a table cant kill someone. If something broke while you were hyped up on root juice, it was your idiot self that did it. Since being root cant just break something, that leaves whatever you did with your newfound godlike powers...or what you blindly flashed with your custom recovery that wields that same power. (READ ME)
So, what did you do with your new abilities? You flashed a glorious, magical kernel (custom kernels are awesome, I'm just dramatizing this a bit). Do you know what a kernel is? Didn't think so. Among other things it contains the hardware device drivers. Yes, you guessed it, the fingerprint scanner is hardware. Its pretty easy to determine that that is the root (lol) of your problem. (READ ME)
The solution is to let the kernel dev know of the issue and help him resolve it, or flash a different custom kernel or the plane jane stock kernel. Problem magically solved.
HERE is a noob oriented article about root you may enjoy reading.
HERE is a slightly more technical one.
I tried not to be to much of a jerk and make it kind of funny yet helpful. If this offended you...go pound sand/salt/crackers/whatever up your delicate a$$. :good:
Hey guys! Seeking some sort of discussion here and if possible ideas on how to come across this weird issue/feeling I am coming across while gaming on this device.
So, last week I purchased this device. The overall experience is great, I would say worth every penny. Though if I have to point out, the biggest issue with this device is how big the screen is. Like it is even bigger than my palm. I didn't minded that first but later on when I tried to play games specifically Call of Duty Mobile, the setup/layout of the buttons went nuts. Everything was overlapping each other. I had to reset the layout and now while it is fine now, it is just too far away from each other. My hands started becoming sore after playing games for a few minutes forcing me to switch back to the old device to play games. Did anyone else is bothered by this and maybe having a fix or hack to come across this issue?
I don't want to unlock and do things with this phone, to be honest as due to the increasing use of CTS and google services in Indian banking and government system, almost all important apps gives issues on running on an unlocked/rooted device and since Magisk is also in a weird condition regarding development, all the more reasons I don't want to unlock.
I thought about getting a controller for gaming but nowadays games match you against players who also use controllers and none of my other friends have a controller which will make it unfair for them to go up against controller players. I wish there was a one-hand mode or display adjustment feature to overcome this issue.

There was an existing software issue that interferes with touch response while aiming through sniper or while aiming normally or moving etc
But now the touch issue is resolved by the latest update in moto g40/g60 devices
maybe this improvement will reflect in your gaming experience
I played Asphalt 9 and didn't face any problems. Even my hands got sore because of this mobile's big fat design for the first two days, but now it feels good.
You can try disabling fullscreen mode for that game in settings.
