Shortcut/Widget for USB tethering? - Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20+ / S20 Ultra Questions &

So I just got the S20 Plus and am loving it for the most part but there's one (admittedly niche) issue I'm having with it: it is obnoxious to just turn on USB tethering, which is something I have to do quite often so it's kind of a big deal for me. Like I'm not sure if it's always been the case with Samsung phones (I just switched over from a Pixel 2 that I used for 3 years, it had this option for as long as I can remember) but you could either go through Dev Options to change Default USB behavior to USB tether or simply click on the drop down notification that pops up whenever you plug in the USB cable and select tethering from there. On this phone, in both of those instances the option's just not there; they show pretty much every other possible function for a USB connection aside from the one that I actually need.
Basically, I just want to know if there's some shortcut/workaround or preferably a widget that I can use to just hit the USB tether toggle instead of what I have to do now which is Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering > USB tethering. There's obviously the Mobile Hotspot button in the quick menu but pressing/long pressing that button both result in exclusively WiFi-related tethering but obviously that's not quite what I'm looking for here

Thanks for the quick reply and recommendation; this is pretty much what I was looking for, or I guess the closest I'm gonna be able to get to it (made a shortcut to the TetherSettings menu). Still find it odd that there isn't an option for it in either of the previously mentioned places but oh well, everything else has been great so far so I guess that's a fair tradeoff

[Q] What is the best method for USB tethering?

I've done my searching through the forums, and I'm either bad at Google or this information is just very hard to find on the XDA forums (I'm guessing it's the latter, because it seems 90% of the information I try to find on these forums takes a good amount of effort beyond a simple search, but that's a different topic).
Anyway, I've seen several options for tethering and as a relatively new Evo user, I'm confused which path to follow.
I am currently running the new Fresh 3.5.0.1 but would be willing to switch ROMs to obtain USB tethering features. The computer I would like to tether has Windows 7 Home Premium, though I dual boot Ubuntu 10.10 occasionally and can also do this if necessary.
Any suggestions (or explicit step-by-step instructions) would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Most, if not all, of the custom ROMs have USB Tethering unlocked. If not, there's a flashable zip that will unlock it and you need HTC Sync installed (not really for HTC Sync but for the HTC Drivers it also installs with it) on your computer.

I am not 100% sure but I assume that Fresh 3.5.0.1 has the usb tethering fix. If not do a search in the forums for "usb tether fix" and then download and install the apk. After that the rest of these instructions should work for you.
As suggested above go ahead and ensure that you have the latest HTC drivers for your computer installed on the PC. Best bet is to follow instructions that came with the device for sync connection.
This installs ther driver. Then follow instructions to establish a connection/partnerhips for sync.
Now to use USB tether:
On the phone itself when you first connect it to a pc via USB you will see a notification pop up or be at the top of your phone screen. If you do not see the pop up slide the notification bar down from the top of the screen since this is where you choose which type of USB connection you would like to make. The option you want will be USB tether which should be one at the very bottom of the list.
Select this and then make sure to click done at the top left.
After that if the rom has it enabled your pc should have a network connection.
Try browsing to something and verify the connection.
One other suggestion that I have found helpful since I use this quite often is to disable background sync.
Do this by going to settings>accounts and sync> then uncheck background data. This help reduce the applications that may use the connection while you are tethered. Just remember to turn it back on if you want your email and other apps to do syncs.
Good luck!
I've only been able to get 3g with the built in usb tethering (same ROM as the OP).
After much frustration, i succumbed to the madness and went with pdanet. 4G tethering works fine with it. If you want to use access ssl sites, you will have to pay the license fee.
Also, "wireless tether" (code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ , code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_5-RC2.apk&can=2&q= ) for wifi tethering. I installed RC1 as that's all that was available yesterday. Seemed to work well, supports wpa2 security only, decent speeds up to 5M down, 1M up here in chicago.
If you want the honestly easiest way:
1) Install CyanogenMod (and GApps) on your phone.
2) Install the Android SDK and HTC Drivers (from HTC Sync) on your computer.
3) Be online already for the first connection (so Windows can pull any additional drivers)
4) In CM, go to Settings>Wireless & networks>Tethering & portable hotspot>USB tethering.
5) Enjoy!
In less than a month, we're expecting to have WiMax setup and ready to go on CyanogenMod, possibly along with Gingerbread by then.
A lot of new ROMs have this feature unlocked, but if you really want a good USB tethering feature PDAnet is a free app that doesn't even require root that I STILL use for USB tethering (even though I am rooted)
Thanks guys turns out this latest version of Fresh does have the USB tether unlocked. The system displayed a dialog claiming it's not part of my Sprint plan and was disabled but it actually works fine. After installing HTC Sync of course.
The main issue now appears to be that my 4G isn't tethering - but I'm sure that will be fixed eventually and hey it's all much better than paying Sprint more for something I've already got anyway.

How do I put a VPN shortcut on my 'home' screen?

Hi,
I am currently using a VPN to get into my network & Then accessing my data that way. However to get to it in Gingerbread, I have to hit menu, then settings, then wireless, then scroll down to VPN, then click on my VPN, then put my password in & hit connect.
It would help a lot to be able to just click on my VPN link on the 'home' screen. I cant figure out how to get the shortcut there.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Rich
I just tried and you add a shortcut to your home screen, just as you add a widget.
I dont see anything related to a VPN within the shortcut menu or widgets. Any ideas on how to do a shortcut for the VPN?
Tried anycut from the market?
Sent from an Epic in the sky.
Thanks, Anycut might do the trick, of course there is no VPN listed. Is there a way to determine what processes are running in Android? If i could find the VPN process, I could probably get it going.
I believe you can achieve this with Tasker. I know its a paid app but its an option.
As a side note, how did you manage to get tour vpn to work? Are you using ddwrt by chance? Since getting this phone I could no longer vpn over sprints network due to firewall issues. From what I found online if you ask sprint for a static IP it fixes the problem but they charge you a monthly fee. It used to work fine on my old HTC hero.

We use L2TP/IPSEC PSK at work though Sonicwall, and it works great.
I don't have a static IP on my account. Works fine from 3g or my home WiFi.

I am using a Zyxel firewall & L2TP also. It works fine but... sprints lousy service seems to stall out, requiring me to re login to the VPN. Yesterday with 1 bar, I was logged into the VPN but there was not enough 3g to actually use any data, but enough to stay logged in for 2 hours & not get any emails.
It works fine & I suspect if i had better 3g (or verizon) it would work OK.
I was using DDWRT & OpenVPN with CM7 on my Evo 4g & it worked but I switched to a new router.
Yeah, missing emails is never good.
We don't have an Exchange server at work (not cost effective enough to make it work properly across 10 locations), so I'm able to access my email with K9 via IMAP or POP3.
It's strange that it worked with one Sprint phone, but not reliably with another. Has data service had a general decline in your area?

You should try vpn show. You can find it in google play.
Check the "Launch VPN" app on Google Play
Sorry to revive an old thread. I was looking for this as well and found a way. Just adding if anyone searches for this sort of thing.
Add a shortcut to home screen, select settings, then look for VPN.
This works in my HTC ONE on 4.2.2
I use NFC Task Launcher on my Samsung Galaxy S4.
The following could be a little bit different depending on your phone's make and model and rom type. I did the following.
WARNING: I am not responsible for any damage made to your phone or anybody or anything else during the reading or by following the acts of this tutorial in any way possible.
Click to collapse
Open up NFC Task Launcher and go through the tutorial.
- In the end you can create you own task.
- When you create a new task just click for NFC.
If you have NFC Disabled, just leave it like that and when it'll ask you if you want to enable it, press cancel. (TIP; if the top bar overlay is bugging with more information, just tap on one of the buttons after explanation to have it's focus come back to the window.)
- Name the task 'VPN' or something.
- Click on the cross (✚) in the right top corner to add an action
- Search for 'Applications & Shortcuts' and select 'Open Activity', then click next at the bottom.
- The application list will load up. Select 'Settings' as an application and the activities list will be updated.
- Choose; 'com.android.settings.Settings$VpnSettingsActivity' and select 'Add to Task' at the bottom.
- Then press the arrow to the right '→' in the top right corner.
- It will say you need to place a tag underneath it. DON'T DO THAT, AS IT WILL OVERWRITE THE TAG. (I hope you still have NFC OFF!)
- Just press the tick mark (✓)
- Now you have at least 1 task in the 'My Tasks' list.
Now, to add this to you're homescreen, do the following;
- Go to your homescreen.
- Add a widget like you would normally do. The name of the widget is 'Run Task', so look for the 'R'.
- There are 3 options there, background color (I personally like the black BG), select Icon (I've chosen the gear icon since its a setting) and select task. In 'Select Task' choose for the VPN task you've made and press 'Done'.
- Now press the task on the homescreen, and it'll open up the VPN list (at least on SGS4 it does).
- Connect to your VPN as you would normally do.
You can even write this to an NFC, but that doesn't make sense, since all it does is open the VPN settings menu, not connecting to the VPN directly.
Sidenote; This app is also handy for making other tasks, such as tweeting your at work, check in at Foursquare, send your boss an email that you're in the office and turn off the sound of your phone all in one task, just by connecting to your works wifi connection or by taping an NFC task.
Now you can easily connect to your favorite VPN easily.

Both.
To text from TABLET, first install this app on your phone, then install our MightyText tablet app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mightytext.tablet
I use Tablet Talk and it's the same way, the app runs on both devices and they stay connected via BT or Wifi. I may have to give this one a try and compare.

Tablet Talk isn't free but you only need to purchase it once, I'd try this other one first.
MightyText uses the network. My favorite part is I can view my texts via https://mightytext.net/web/ and also send from there. So if I forget my phone at home I can log in from work and view/reply/send. They do store the texts on their server so you are risking that I guess. You can specify how many days worth of text to save on their side. This gives more detail as well http://mightytext.net/
Mighty text is pretty nice I like it
+1 for MightyText. I use it on my N7 and Moto X 2013. There is also a Chrome extension for texting from your computer.
Can Mighty Text let you answer phone calls via your Tablet? By that I mean the phone still answers the call, you can just remote it from the tablet.

Tablet Talk can, I want to try out Mighty Text, just seeing if it's there. With Tablet talk if the phone rings, I get a pop up on my Tablet to answer it. It's primarily for someone using a head/bluetooth. I use my tablet in the car for Nav/Music and my phone as a hot spot. I can answer calls from the tablet without needing to pick my phone up.
I do like the server based model with Mighty Text. Tablet Talk depends on the devices connecting together via BT or over the same wifi network.

Sorry, I misunderstood the question. I thought you wanted an app that let you actually take the call through your tablet with voice, not just control the phone being answered. MightyText does have an option to notify the tablet/PC when the phone is ringing, but I'm not sure if you can initiate the call with it or not.
I just checked my settings and turned it on for my phone. Not sure why it was off.. but the other day for the first time since I started taking the bus to work in July I got a phone call on the ride home. I had my headphones in, which were plugged in to my tablet, so I didn't hear my phone until it got to the loudest ringer (escalating "Maneater" by Hall & Oates ).

The notification is nice, at least you know you have a call. Nice ring tone btw..
I finally got everything worked out in the car so that the tablet connects to my head unit for music and the phone connects for phone. The tablet and phone connect to each other via BT for Tablet Talk to work and the tablet uses the hotspot on my phone. I almost have it all automated also, just need to work out something in tasker to turn my hotspot on when I have some time to play around with it.

Depending on the order of events, you could turn on hotspot as soon as your phone connects to the car. And when your tablet connects to the head unit, turn on wifi (if you keep it off for battery saving).
I actually have Tasker turn my hotspot on when I get out of the car (if it's M-F from 6:30a-7:30a; when I go to get on the bus), and turns off when my tablet detects that I'm near my work WiFi. In the afternoon Tasker enables WiFi at 4:30 when I leave work and stays on until bluetooth connects in my car again after I get off the bus.

I don't have a modded Hotspot app, but I use the Tasker toggle in Net > WiFi tether. Works great. If you're rooted, you can also use shell commands to simulate input if you need to open the Hotspot app and press a button. Not hard, I can share details if needed.

Now that I'm on a PC (was on my phone last night) I can explain the shell command option. If using the regular Net > Wifi Tether option doesn't work in Tasker, try this way.
First, go to Developer Options in your settings menu (if you don't have Dev Options, go to Settings > About Phone and tab the build number 7 times until it says you're a developer) and turn on Pointer Location. This will put a gray bar at the top of the screen showing the coordinates of where you're touching. Go into your hotspot app and note the coordinates of whatever buttons you need to press to enable and disable the hotspot. The coords you want are X and Y and should be the second set of numbers from the left.
Have a Tasker action open the hotspot app you need, then make a new action with Script > Shell.
In the Command portion, type:
Code:
input tap X Y
Where X and Y are the coordinates you recorded earlier for whatever button you need to press to enable hotspot. Make sure the Use Root checkbox is checked. If you need more than one input command, make another Script > Shell using the same method. I usually put Task > Wait for 1 second between input commands just to give the phone a moment to think. Do the same in reverse for your exit task to turn it back off again.
Once you set it up, press the play button in the lower left corner to test it out. You will need to grant Tasker root access if you haven't done so previously.
Let me know if you have questions, happy to help.

2 Little Tricks to Compliment Your Use of the Mate 20X!

Have you ever wondered why there is no shortcut to the Dual Sim Menu of the Mate 20X?
Would you like to have a direct link to the Tethering and Hotspot Settings?
Now You Can! All you have to do is:
Pull Down the Notification Panel.....
- LONG PRESS Airplane Mode to access: Airplane Mode toggle, SIM Management, Personal Hotspot, Data Usage
- LONG PRESS Hotspot to access; Personal Hotspot settings, More: Bluetooth Tethering and USB Tethering.
These little tricks will speed up your access to the these 2 important and commonly used settings that some will find very handy.
You can Also reposition the placement of these shrotcuts on the Notification Panel by clicking onto the PenWriting icon on the top right side of the Notification Panel to move the Shortcuts to your preferred places on the Panel.
LONG PRESSING OF MOST NOTIFICATION PANEL ITEMS WILL TAKE YOU TO THEIR REPSECTIVE SETTINGS
DISCOVERED THAT THIS LITTLE TRICK APPEARS TO BE WORKING ON MOST ANDROID PHONES RUNNING ON THE RECENT VERSIONS OF ANDROID INCLUDING Samsung Galaxy Note 8/9/10 and many Other Huawei, Samsung and other Brand Devices.
JUST TRY AND SEE IF WORKS ON YOUR PHONE AND Enjoy Ease of Use!
If anyone has any other access shortcuts on the Mate 20x/5G, then do please share. Preferably, if someone can post a direct shortcut for the Sim Management Menu this would be even more of use to me.

Question Please help!!

Good evening, my pixel 6 USB preferences is missing from the status bar and also for some reason it will not keep the roaming network I pick and chooses to act like automatic.
I need it to stay on a specific network so u don't get roaming charges internationally, but when I click on the roaming network I want, it goes to the next one. I have automatically connect to network off. Anyone offer any help please?
Thank you in advance
Try a network reset if you haven't.
Clear system cache.
I will try that thank you, and about the USB preferences missing, anyway to add them to status bar?

Don't know. Check Developer options.
This seems to be a common complaint... you may need to work around it.

Yeah, couldn't find the option in developmer options not sure why the removed such a very useful feature
Can you fix the title to make more contextual sense for anyone browsing?
We don't want to read "Help please", it'd be better for everyone to read "[Help] USB Status Notification Missing" or whatever would better describe your issue.
I hate to say it, but the only thing I can think of to try is a factory reset. But I don't know if it'll help. The USB settings in Developer Options is present for me.
In the developer option I have a "Default USB configuration" toggle which then brings up a sub menu for the various options (File Transfer, USB Tethering, MIDI, PTP and No data transfer". Is this what you meant, or were you looking for an option to switch on a quick tile in the main notification drop down? If the latter, I don't think that exists in Android 12.
