Not sure what is happening, but as soon as I switch on wifi, then I lose all data connection, email, weather, internet etc
Could I have inadvertently changed a setting somewhere? this only seems to be happening for the last few days.

mine does that when im tethered via wifi...to get around that, i tether via usb...
This oes it when not tethered.
Yeah, I get this too but only when the wifi signal's weak. I live in a big old house with really thick walls. I already have 2 routers putting out the same ssid but in the bedroom it's pretty much a no go.
By weak I mean it says it's getting 1-5meg down and 1 up. It just stops the phone getting any data at all. Don't know if that's the same for you. Is it like that when stood in the same room as your router ?
Router is about 3 ft away!
try this

Start, settings, connections, wifi, wireless networks, network adapters tab and make sure the "my network card connects to..." dropdown box says "The Internet" Hope that helps
Thanks Luke, I think that has sorted it, I knew it would be something obvious, but didn't know what.
I don't know if this has been posted already, but I was struggling trying to find solutions so I thought I would post what worked for me.
After updating to froyo rooted deodexed stock rom, my wifi tether became very unstable. It would say it was connected, but my computer would lose internet access and would only reconnect after I stopped and restarted wireless tether.
The day it started to behave again I did the following:
- Turned "Find My Location" off in Shopsavvy
(this did not make a noticeable difference, but I left it like that anyway, just in case)
- Upgraded wireless tether to 2.0.5-pre8
- Installed Wifinder to make sure I was using a clear channel in wireless tether
(The default channel I was on was clear from what I could tell, but I went ahead and changed it to 1 in the wireless tether settings anyway)
- On my computer, I right clicked on the wireless tether connection, selected properties, connection, and put a checkbox in "connect even if the network is not broadcasting its name (SSID)", then ok.
(I believe I read some people saying that the phone was stopping broadcasting the SSID when the internet was dropping, which is why I did this)
After those changes, I was able to stay connected for hours versus minutes, but after restarting the phone I have been able to stay connected until I disconnect.
The only time it has disconnected without me physically turning off wifi tether since then was a couple of times trying to test my upload speed, but not every time. I think there must be something they are doing to shut down the connection when large or aggressive uploads are detected or something.
I was actually having this same problem on the old Fresh .02 ROM I was using. Thanks for the info I will give what you said a try!
I was having the same problems as well...it seemed like every 10 minutes it would just stop but still said I was connected when clearly I wasn't. I will have to test this tonight when I get home...thanks so much!
Can anyone confirm this works? I'm having major issues with all data connection dropping after a few minutes of being online. What I've noticed is that the 3G indicator in the notification bar will actually disappear momentarily, then reappear, but once it reappears...I'm not able to connect further until I restart the tether app.

I would change your version of wireless tether first. Which one are you using? I am using 7 now, but I believe 8 was best for me.

Using "Wireless Tether for Root Users 2.0.5-pre11" now...haven't tried it with this version however I was using pre9 and that version was causing the 3G problems that I described in my last post.
I had this same issue. When I went into the wireless tether application and changed it to use channel one everything started working perfectly.

I'll try that and report my results...really annoying problem, ya know?
I think the "aggressive download" portion is accurate. I can stay connected for hours with a little web browsing going on; however, start up a torrent or connect to my PS3 and it disconnects in 5-10 minutes. I'll try the SSID broadcast later tonight though and test it under heavy load.

My issue isn't "aggressive downloads" - a PS3 connection doesn't require a lot of bandwidth, just a low latency connection - which is probably the reason you are disconnected. I use my wireless tether for playing online games from my computer. When it is actually working and playing well, its running 8-12 kbit/sec, which is very low bandwidth. It's only when the 3G indicator disappears that my whole connection is lost and I have to restart my game and restart Wireless Tether as well. FWIW my latency while playing is roughly 400-500ms - high, but the game tolerates it.
Hi all, Im having a problem that is slowly driving me insane for the past 2 weeks. I surely cant be the only one. Anyway, I generally move between home and work daily, both have WIFI. When Im at home Im connected, all fine. I travel to work, WIFI isnt connected, again this is normal. I get into work and when I expect it be connected to WIFI it isnt, WIFI is off and I have to manually turn it back on to get it connected to WIFI again. Why do I have to do this? Why have all my other Android devices just worked normally and reconnect to known networks. Its soooo frustrating
Anyone have same problem or have a resolution?

Both Stock rom, with and without the volume fix, and Modaco MCR4. Wifi settings are set as WIFI on even during sleep.
Is there some settings Im missing somewhere other than in Settings > Wireless & Netowrks > Wifi ??

Yep. Try that. Only thing I can think of. My wifi was flaky with that setting on even 4 from my router. If that doesn't solve are you using any kind of task managing àpp?

I have posted this in other people's threads in regards to poor wifi reception. I recently purchased a 9250 through bell canada and have the same problem.
I have turned off the 'avoid poor connections' as well. It turns on and off on its own and can't get through a download of more then 5MB on wifi.
It will also reconnect on its own if I have left wifi turned on. I would say while WIFI is turned on I may actually be connected 30% of the time. This is 90% in 2 feet away from a router.
I'm having the same issue (wifi turning itself off) - noticed it the other day and just assume I'd caught the wi-fi button (I use extended controls). Happened again this morning and also just now as I got home.
I've not modded anything on my Nexus (4.0.1) - avoid poor connections has been disabled for a while.
I may test the theory, but betweek home and work is a wifi enabled bus journey, I never use it but it always tells me there's a wifi available. I might turn wifi notification off and see it if turns itself off before I get to work in the morning...
Left home with wifi on... Got to work and wifi was off? Wtf?
Could it be extended controls?

You are not the only one, it's happening to me in exactly the same scenario. Oddly enough it hasn't happened today.
i cant make out of your post thast the wifi on/off button turns of? or just the connection to the wifi adres?
i dont know about any sleep or auto turn of policy's as i didnt try it(i always turn off my wifi when travling)
but if its the last thing.
than the problem might not even be the GN.?
but the router it self.
even computer's and laptopt can have problems when the password is too long,or to different(hard characters like :';/.m,[email protected]#$%^&**(() ][ )
it might also be the MHZ setting,as the 20MHZ has wider range but can be disorted by machines like microwaves.
but the 40MHZ has lower range but wouldnt be disorted.
as there is also the channel option thats has been set wrong/or the pasword encryption. or any other router conflicting with the router you want to connect.
it might also be the router not liking your GN.(as my spica doesnt conect to my router at home, but all my other devices do.my router doesnt want to give a IP to my spica.)
It just happened to me again now, left the office whilst wifi was on and connected. Grabbed some lunch and returned (about 20 mins) and now my wifi button is set to off and I need to set it back to on.

Can't see any policy settings or any power save features. Running stock.
somehow I have fixed it. Problem is I don't know how.
Here is what I did in case anyone else needs help;
*From the 'My Vodafone' app, select wi-fi finder, in settings untick 'Enable BT Openzone'
*Settings, wi-fi, advanced, untick 'Network Notification', untick 'Avoid poor connections'
Not sure which of the above actually fixes it but my Wi-Fi has been on for about 1 1/2 days now.
Have you or when did you upgrade to 4.0.2? As the changelog mentions a wifi fixed. Only upgraded this morning so won't see if it has worked until I get home...

So I am still having this problem since day one. I have travelled through 3 countries and multiple cities and tried to use WIFI in at least 20+ different instances and the problem is the same.
It connects right away (really quickly actually) will stay connected for a bit then eventually loses connection.
I can't download any of the big packages for the games and so I can't play them. I won't use my data connection for anything over 100mb.
I got a message for an update yesterday. Updated the phone but I see no difference in the Android version number.
Anything happening with this?
I thought the update i was downloading was 4.0.2 but i guess it wasn't.
I am familar with updating and flashing from the galaxy s. But I want to use the phone completely stock for while.
I have just returned my nexus for a replacement. Lets see how it goes.
So far I have had the power shut off once while toggling the wifi widget (never happened on my other phone). And the wifi has disconnected twice. I have just done the update (not 4.0.2) and it seems to work a little better.
Called samsung yesterday after getting the replacement phone when it had the same issue (just as a reminder I have tried it on numerous routers/ap's) and they said they hadn't heard of the issue.
I said I was just calling to provide some feedback. They told me to return the phone yet again. I obviously believe I don't have a problem with the hardware at all. I figured if store let me return it, then why not.
Anyway onto my 3rd one today and the exact same problem.
I think that even though I am turning off "Avoid Poor Connections" it isn't actually turning that 'feature' off. Every so often and only if your watching the wifi settings it will say that it disconnected the wifi connection due to low signal.
Mind you all of this is 1' from my router while sitting at my computer. My galaxy S is sitting beside me and has maintained a wireless link to the router the entire time.
Is there any way to prevent your data connection from being lost when a secured Wifi network is within range. I don't understand why the phone gives a secured wifi network preference over your carriers network... effectively preventing any data connection until you turn off wifi.
Just one example of this annoying problem came when I was navigating to a job location and a road was closed. GPS could not reroute me because I was in a residential neighborhood picking up lots of wifi networks. All the them were secured. So... in order to reroute I had to toggle off my wifi so that my phone would go back to connecting through my carrier.
Why do phones do this? Until your device obtains an IP address from the wifi hotspot it should not bypass the carriers data connection. Is there any way around this that doesn't require constantly turning wifi on and off?
Many thanks...

Never had this problem.... My GS3 has always ignored secured and unsecured wifi networks unless I specifically request to connect to them. The only thing I can think is that its trying to connect to the same SSID that you're using at home like "netgear" or something. If that's the case, shame on you for not changing your default SSID at home.
If not, what setup are you on? Stock/rom/kernel etc.
My SSID does not match anything out there. It happens all the time. When I go to my kids favorite park my phone tries to connect to a cablevison hotspot. When I open an app like Facebook or tapatalk it just hangs. If I open a web browser I get redirected to one of those sign in pages. As soon as I turn off wifi I go back to 4G and browse as normal.
This happens on every phone I've ever owned including my wife's phone, parents phones and brothers phone. I just figured it was something everyone dealt with.... Was hoping for a work around.

This is pretty strange so I thought I'd check here with people.
I got my new Sprint Note 2 today. When I was at home it connected to my wifi network and worked fine. When I got to work I connected it to our wifi network and the internet won't work. If I turn off wifi internet comes back.
Here's the kicker, I have my old iPhone right next to it connected to the work wifi network and it is connected fine to the internet. This is definitely going through wifi as I no longer have a data plan on that phone.
I checked with our IT admin who said that there is no need to "accept" a device on our wifi network. He also rebooted the network for good measure. After both phones lost the network (from the reboot) and reconnected the same thing happened. No internet from my Note but internet works fine on the iPhone. Restarting my Note doesn't fix the problem.
Any ideas? Thanks.

My network admin created a second wifi network to connect to (I guess our router supported it) and when I connected to the new one I got internet.
If it helps others try and solve the issue he tried pinging the IP address that my phone was using and said that he could only send information but not get anything back.

Try changing your wifi channel config in the router.
Hi, I've got the International version N7100 and experiencing weird wifi problem. I have tried to reset my wifi router and use static IP but it doesn't solve the problem. Btw, the problem is whenever I connect my Note 2 to wifi it would lose connection after a while then messes my router and connection of my PC to router as well. Never had this issue until I brought the Note 2 home a week ago. I had to restart my router and turn off my wifi on Note 2 for everything else to work. My iPad, iPhone and PC are all doing fine when Note 2's wifi is off.
I used to have terrible problems with my Virgin Superhub which all went away when I changed the security settings to WEP hexidecimal from WPA2-PSK (AES). Laptops and phones would have intermittent connections all the time which a reboot or channel change would sort out but only temporarily. Give it a whirl.

I've been experiencing the same problem. It's especially annoying when I try to download big size apps on Google Play ( > 1 gb) because it will stop any moment and i will have to re-download it over and over again. It never happens when I connect to school wifi but it just happens when I connect to my wifi at home. Weird. Nothing is wrong with my wifi at all because my other computer is always connected 24/7 without any problem.
I have a similar problem on Omega Ron v5.0 with latest Andrei kernel. The phone gets stuck sometimes in getting IP address part or have disconnects. It's annoying.

Afraid not.
I did that after other efforts failed but still have to go through same issue every now and then. This is not a permanent problem but something that occurs at least once a day for me.
Also having Wifi issues with GN2 from Sprint
I got the GN2 on it's release date (this past Thursday) through Sprint. Got it home got set up, connected...everything worked beautifully.
After a couple of hours, downloading apps etc. I noticed it had stalled. Turned off WiFI and used the network to finish. Turned back on WiFi and Voila, action again, but a few hours later it stalled.
I first made sure all of my settings were in agreement. No sleep mode or anything like that was enabled. No power saver either.
Couple hours goes by, WiFi connectivity stalls (even though it shows a full signal) I contacted TWC and made sure it wasn't the modem/router. I changed the wifi channel, tinked with the bandwidth... everything worked...an hour later it stalled. Called Sprint they said I had a dud, took it back, exchanged it, got the new one... SAME ISSUES. YEsterday I connected to my Church network HOPING it was an issue at home, but not so. After an hour on the network it stalled.
Contacted Samsung today and they have had no complaints according to them so i said I'm happy to be the first... If anyone finds a fix please let me know.

Do you have any solution yet? I have the same issues with 2 different networks. I already contacted Samsung, but they only say I should do a reset of my device and read the setup instuctions for wifi. I'm still in contact with Samsung and hardly try to get a solution.
Stay tuned, I'll post any news I can get.

I'd prefer it to work with the stronger encryption of WPA2 rather than WEP.
OP: it will be great if you could add a poll to the thread as that way we can see whats the percentage of users are experiencing this issue,

Same issue here. Connect wifi and I'm able to hold connection for as little as minutes at times. Turn back on 4G and I'm fine. If I re enable wifi straight after it works intermittently. This is true of both my home and office wifi. So I'm lead to believe it's the phone.
Hi,
Almost the same thing here. everytime I go out of my home and comeback the wifi network seems to work but no internet access. I have to stop and restart wifi then it works.
very strange issue. ok I have a work around but I'm going to open a ticket to Samsung.
Same issue - connects for about 30 seconds
I've tried on different routers. Other devices (iphone, ipad, S3, etc.) all work fine. Sees the wifi network. connects, then disconnects and TURNS OFF WIFI. I can't figure out how to go to service mode to see if this is a timer issue. I've tried on both G and N networks. using a verizon fios, actionteck router (and netgear). Also, will not remember the password credentials. tried router reboot and fidling, etc. Driving me nuts. any suggestions ???
