Just installed XBMC on my Fire TV last night and am loving it. The only issue I have is that it doesn't show up in the app menu. Does anybody know how the Fire TV differentiates between supported and unsupported apps? My ultimate goal would be to modify the XBMC apk to add whatever flag needs to be there to make it a supported app.

I think one person said that the apps have to cache the apps icon in a certain directory. I don;t remember which forum is was but someone was getting them to show up by copying the icon or something.

I saw on the XBMC forum where you can modify the splash screen by pushing a custom .png, but nothing on app icons. Is that what you're thinking of?
EDIT: For those interested in the custom splash screen - http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=191109&pid=1676162&highlight=splash+screen#pid1676162

Most likely you'll have to get your app cryptographically signed by Amazon
I keep on reading that the Fire TV Stick is supposed to have this dedicated free app to control be able to control it from your android device (and ios coming soon...blah blah) and use voice search from your phone/tablet also....but I can't find where to download it!! Don't know if it will even work to Fire TV but it would be pretty dumb if they didn't allow it too!!
Anybody know how and where to get this app??
Had my fire tv at my girlfriends house and her little crazy dog has destroyed 2 remotes so I bought her a chromecast and brought the Fire TV back home. I leave 1tb backup drive connected to the usb to play movies through xbmc and everytime I leave the house and come back I have to disconnect it, plug in wireless keyboard, start droidmote server, reconnect drive and remount using stickmounte...it's a waste of a whole 60 seconds but still a pain!!
I don't believe it has been released yet. Still two more weeks or so until the fire tv sticks start shipping, I would expect to see it before then.

Why you must start droidmote server manually ? It should start automatically if in settings you have checked auto start on boot.

Yeah, have had that site bookmarked for a while now - one of the 6-7 android type sites I check when I get to my college every morning.

I see that one can install the server on Windows. But can the client be installed on Windows. Planning on switching from an Android table to a full Windows 8.1 Tablet in the future. But could not find a reference of Windows 8.1 being the client to control the FTV. Not so much for games but mouse & keyboard inputs.

Zulu,
Any plans to get droidmote on the Amazon App Store? I would be happy to pay a premium on it there since I could use my amazon coins to buy it....
I would like a lot, but I can not for now for a question of the security of the app. It is not easy to be an Android app developer, despite the applications are very cheap, there is always someone ready to rip you off and because of this, there is often more work to do on the protection that on the app.
I think the Google Play should be installable for FREE on any Android devices. (like the Amazon app store) I do not understand why it should be sold by GMS license from Google if it contains apps that are owned by the developers. I hope that this serious problem of the Android world will be solved soon.

Any idea how to force the setting menu to open with a wireless keyboard?? I see the 3dot menu on the google play pics but don't have it on the app on my fire TV...even downloaded the 3dot xposed module but no luck! I know that the fire stick remote app is officially being released tmrw but really like this app and is probably still gonna be more useful than the official remote app!
Never mind!! Was able to open it with droidmote!

Yes you can use the menu button of DroidMote Client.
Aside from that, I wanted to make a clarification:
The circle icon that you see when you move the mouse, is not a DroidMote stuff. If you use the Server on a standard Android device, you can see the classic mouse icon.
Instead the TouchMouse (for apps without mouse support, selectable by client settings ) is a DroidMote stuff and is the red transparent circle. But it is another thing.
Why your FireTv show the circle instead of the classic mouse icon ?
Because those who built the firmware has changed this icon replacing it with a really ugly in the Android Framework.
Where is the mouse icon inside the Android Framework ?
You can read this link to know, but do not try to change if you're not an expert on the Android OS.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1478523
P.S.
Android is an operating system that is constantly changing and all the apps within it change so fast-paced.
To have a good remote control, you need a lot of work and testing on many applications during the evolution of the OS.
For example with Android Lollipop, Android has been completely changed from the ground up, and it took a lot of work to adapt to it.
A good application for remote control, can only exist if a developer follows her and love her everyday, adapting to all the innovations, to apps and games that constantly change.
This is what I do every day.

Sorry for not being clearer - when I opened the app ALL I would see on the screen was the "big red circular button" in the center of the screen - the one that says off, not the cursor. But after using my keyboard to "click" the "button" and turn the service on I was able to use the client app to open up the setting and set it to start on boot

When you saw the red circle was because, inadvertently, in the settings of the Client you have selected the TouchMouse without selecting a correct TouchProfile.
The TouchMouse is useful when an app not have the mouse support. In all other circumstances, you can always use the mouse as rightly made at a later date.

Hello all,
I have a few questions about Fire TV 2 and Fire Stick 2.
I'm hoping if I explain what I'm trying to accomplish someone can direct me to the right areas.
1. I want to run VPN.
2. WiFi kinda sucks because I'm limited to channel 36 on 5g
3. I want to get raid of all the bloatware. Free up more processing for VPN
4. My WiFi keep disconnecting every 10+/- minutes
5. Simple layout ... Wife friendly.
6. I would like to connect a hard drive.
I know I have to root... Which I'm comfortable with but the tried on fire tv.
Any firmware I should stick too?
Please and thanks.
Another Firestick Set-Up
I have a few questions about Fire Stick
I'm hoping if I explain what I'm trying to accomplish someone can direct me.
I have bought another Firestick I plan on Jailbreaking. I am using Comcast. When My new stick arrives.... can I use the same 'interent' settings even though it may go to someone else with a different platform ... say Century Link or some other provider?

There is no such thing as a jailbroken fire stick (jailbroken is an iPhone term)
You can root it if that's what you mean
Or you can sideload apps
What do you mean by "Internet settings"
It's just a simple case of connecting the fire tv device to your router - either via eithnet cable or WiFi - who your Internet provider is doesn't matter as long as you're within the same country as when you purchased it otherwise you need to change location details on your amazon account
Hello,
I bought a new Fire TV (3?) 4k. Unfortunately, the forum is a bit confusing because of the many types of devices (Fire TV, stick, etc.).
What should I do best with?
I would like to do the following with the device:
- Kodi
- Apps like YouTube
- vpn maybe (NordVPN)
Then I have two more questions:
- Does Android work?
- Can you have Android and Amazon OS on it at the same time and always choose?
Is there anything else important that I should do or know?
Would be great if you can help me.

To start off with android os is android - they all run lollipop except firetv 3 & cube which run nougat
You can install kodi kodi on any fire device - just download the apk from the website & use adb to install
Either via your pc or via a phone app like apps2fire
There's a YouTube thread in the apps section - again just download & install via adb
There's plenty of YouTube guides on how to install apps to the fire device
You can use a vpn app on any fire device except the firestick version 1
I have kodi and other apk’s loaded on the fire tv. I struggled to get sports to work so I decided to get a vpn. IP vanish. When I have it turned on my kodi won’t play tv or film links. But the sports work sometimes. I have the toggle app for an apk. The toggle is stuck on starting but I can get it to still work but on the apk where ever I click on the screen it doesn’t click the same bit. I mean if there’s 5 links up and down I need to click the 3rd link to open the first and don’t get to open the bottom 2 as cursor would be out the screen and screen won’t scroll down enough. I don’t have any of these problems on the 2nd gen fire stick. Anyone got any suggestions or are the new fire tv’s just crap?
Thanks

You need to choose a different VPN server that allows you to play both. Some servers or countries have certain things blocked

They are all different per provider. I use VPN.AC as my VPN. They have a native beta app for the fire TV that you have to side load. I use a double hop feature. Check them out

I want to use a bluetooth keyboard with my fire tv and want to get rid of the fire tv remote totally. I can replicate almost all the remote features of the remote - only features that I can't seem to replicate from the keyboard is the menu button (3 parallel lines) and the restart shortcut (Select + Play) from the remote. It would be awesome if I can somehow add global hotkeys for these.
If this kind of app does not exist, I would be happy to develop it - I just need some guidance on how this can be achieved.
Thanks

I don't know about an app which would do this but you might be able to develop something for yourself, some quick hints: have a look at Androids AccessibilityService. You could make one which receives some key event from your remote, swallows it and pushes out the required, mapped key events via a custom InputMethodService... though this topic probably belongs into the Fire TV Development section...

perhaps TheRealQubix of ftvlaunchx could give you some pointers, love your idea and it seems to be related to what ftvlaunchx/LauncherHijack does
let us know if you got that app done
