S20 back crack - Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20+ / S20 Ultra Questions &

I was changing my clothes a threw my S20 on bed, which proceeded to skim off the bed and landed on a wooden floor. I did not give it a second thought until I went around and pick it up. Three huge cracks running the length of the phone on the back! After landing on a wooden floor. Yes, I know I should have gotten a case immediately but Gorilla Corning glass #5 should be able to withstand a three feet drop unto a wooden floor. A $1,000 phone should be able to withstand that, all the cheaper models would have because I have owned a few. I have insurance but I already am thinking about something a little more rugged, this phone is to prissy for me.

I would like to quote jerry rig everything here. Glass is glass, and glass will break.
Having gorilla glass makes the glass resistant to scratches, not towards cracks. It doesnt make the phone more resistant towards dropping and shattering.
You know, every since iphone came up with the idea of putting glass on phones, i thought it was a stupid idea.. And I still think it's a stupid idea. But it does look and feel premium.
I gotten my rugged case online the moment I prebooked by s20+ and had received it even before I got my phone. When I took delivery of the phone, first thing I did, after seeing up the esim and putting in my second sim card and microsd card, was to put it on the case.
An expensive lesson you learned there bro.
And never ever throw your phone.
The cheaper devices you have probably isn't as heavy as this phone. And it Also depends on the angle of which it contacted the floor. At certain angles it's more susceptible to shatter. Taking into account of the 3 feet tall bed you have, that can create cracks that major, the force is incredible.
I'm not sure about you but my phone came with 1 time free glass replacement for the first 6 months of buying the phone from samsung. You might want to take advantage of that and take it to the nearest service centre. If you are under lockdown, at least make an appointment so the incident is logged in samsung centre so you can still have it changed free even if it's after the 6 months due to the lock down.

Why are you surprised? Sometimes phones drop from the 3rd floor and survive without a scratch and sometimes they fall just from a few centimeters and explode! You are the genius who threw it wrong onto your bed and broke it. You shouldn't be complaining about it being Gorilla glass or it being a 1000$ phone! those things have nothing to do with you being careless. Be grateful you have insurance.

Scratched Screen

I'm a bit disappointed in the gorilla glass used in my Defy. I've had the phone for a little over a month and haven't abused it, but last week I noticed a squiggly hairline crack about a 1/4 of an inch long and it has slowly gotten longer since I first noticed it. The day that it happened it was in my pocket with my keys and may have been subjected to some pressure, but nothing significant.
Since this is supposed to be a scratch-proof phone do you think there is any way I can get it replaced under warranty? I purchased it new from T-Mobile just over a month ago. Either way, I'm very disappointed that it scratched so easily.
I have read of a few instances where people where able to have their phones replaced due to the glass scratching as it is marketed as a scratch resistant phone.
It is scratch resistant, not scratch proof, nevermind crack.

Exactly right.
For the glass to have cracked, there must have been a fair amount of pressure applied to it and there's no way Motorola or anyone else is going to accept responsibility for that.
As for scratch resistance, I've taken a stanley knife to a Galaxy S (also has Gorilla glass) and there was minimal scratching, very difficult to tell it had been 'attacked'.
My GF managed to scratch her Defy within days of getting it. Just by keeping it in her handbag with all the usual girlie junk. It lives in a protective slip case now!

The treatment gorilla glass goes through in the manufacturing process makes it ever so slightly more prone to cracking/spiderwebbing if dropped. You can not have scratch proof AND shatter proof.

Well you could, it's just that then the glass wouldn't be clear.
and wouldn't be called "glass".
I noticed a small scratch from being in my jean pocket. I think those sands particles that were used to sands blast the jeans scratched against the screen. Anyhow it was at d2 of the ownership so I just got exchanged for a neW phone. Lesson learned and now I have a screen protector plus phone case.

13 Days, already has a scratch on the screen

Hello everyone. I've had the Lumia 900 for only 13 days and thought I had taken relatively good care of it, yet it already has a scratch on the screen. I did not invest in a screen protector simply because I had heard such great things about Gorilla Glass and didn't deem it necessary. However, it is already there and AT&T's return policy states that they will not exchange it due to physical damage. What should I do? Contact Nokia and send it off for a glass covering? I'm not sure. If anyone takes something from this post, please invest in a screen protector.
Thanks for letting us know. I thought this had corning/gorilla glass, do you know how the scratch was caused? Definitely worriesome if it can be scratched easily..
My screen on my Lumia900 is just fine, but what I notice is the thin metal rim around the screen is dented in many places. Looks like the rim is made from a super malleable metal, it doesn't take much to put a dent in it. I've only dropped my phone out of my hands once onto a wooden table from maybe 4 inches off it, and that was it. Yet there are numerous little dents and pockmarks in the rim. Not too much an eyesore but it wigs out the OCD in me, haha.

I believe it is Corning Gorilla Glass, and I have not done anything drastic with the phone. It has yet to be dropped or anything. It just goes into the pocket, and that's it. The metal rim on mine seems to be holding up just fine.

I think they consider this scratch resistent, not scratch proof. You might want to ping Nokia and get their official response. I know with the Dell Venue Pro, they had a very specific canned response for such things.....and it was not in the customers favor. I can't imagine Nokia being any different.
I got two light scratches too. I was surprised that I got them within the first week. I never got a scratch on my HTC Incredible with 2 years of use (without a case or protector).
Damn! I've had mine since April 6th, dropped it on its face many times and no damage whatsoever. My 6 yr old even attacked it with toy utensils and it's still perfect. No screen protector yet, but have one arriving in the mail soon. But I have always been kind of lucky with these kinds of things.
But Corning Gorilla Glass has never been considered scratch proof, just scratch resistant. I always like to have a screen protector as soon as I can find one made specifically for my device.

Same experience here.
My HD2 is more than 2 years old and has never worn a screen protector. Was always in my pocket dancing with the coins, keys and pens for 2 years.
Lumia #1 was in my pocket 2 days and I swapped it because of the purple hue issue. Service guy pointed out there was a scratch almost 1/2 inch long.
Lumia #2 was in my pocket 4 days then swapped today for the same issue. This time I checked for scratches myself and it had a couple little ones 1/16th" ish.
If this is what Gorilla Glass is then the HD2 must have had freaking Orangutan glass or something cause whatever glass they put on this Lumia isn't half as good.
Looking for the best screen protector to buy now.
I Think it's one of those weird things. My girlfriends HD2 got a scratch within a week of owning it a couple years back! So her HD2 must of had chimpanzee glass, lol. I put a screen protector on my HD2 at purchase, due to that. I think it's unexplainable, kind of like "Where do all the missing socks go?" lol.
Some people don't like screen protectors, but regardless, it's ALWAYS, the smart thing to do.

The HD2 is the beast of beasts when it comes to durability. Totally unfair to compare any other phone to that one...when it comes to durability. I still have mine...
i've seen it with iphone 4s too. Mine had 2 hairline scratches. Its actually not the actual scratch in the glass but a scratch in oleophobic layer. feel the scratch on your phone do u actually feel it or u just see it? My 4s had very very light ones that i was unable to feel but saw them at specific angles
Sorry to hear about this. I make an effort to keep my phone, left pocket, in there by itself. Maybe a receipt at the most. Right pocket holds all the 'dangerous' stuff like keys and change. Made that mistake with an old iPhone. Bought it off someone from Craigs, had it for 4 days and accidentally put keys in pocket where it was at for just a few minutes.. damage done.
I'm getting some Ghost Armor put on my 900 this weekend.

Glass is glass and it scratches despite all the marketing claims made by the company. If it was so amazing as they claim, there would be no reason for them to announce a "NEW IMPROVED even more sratch resistant...." version
I think most people who use screen protectors have learned this fact at one point or another. If you don't want scratches on your screen, put on a screen protector.

exactly. I have motorola Defy before, it was claimed scratch proof, but still have scratches.
Ouch!, though i dented my nokia lumia 900 from a bad fall and it was not pretty, so i went to an att store with the "camera button problem" and showed them it was not working(my phone was in a case at the time) so they didnt notice and i just swaped phone took of the case and there i went. Dont panic just get some cheap case from amazon and see the magic.

this phone appears too fragile!

So I have a cracked back cover, and I now found a crack on the plastic bezel today. Not drop damage. It must be stress fracturing or something. I also have minor scratches on screen. The stuff I wouldn't see until a year of use with prior gorilla glass phones.
My buddy dropped from pocket onto his wood deck and the glass cracked.
I see multiple people reporting cracked screens from minor falls.
Starting to question the reliability of what appeared to be a great device. Phones shouldn't need babied.
Other thoughts or experiences?
Dropped mine the other day, minor dent to bezel next to screen and its barely noticeable. Kicker to the while thing is that I was on my way into T-Mobile to return the case that was on it and I dropped it coming out of my car. It bothers me but at least the screen didn't take any damage. I have the full coverage on it in case of any future damage. But the phone definitely needs to be babied.
No case? No screen protector? I've dropped mine 3-4 times...no damage to either casing or screen. For a $500 device...keep it reliable by buying **** for it.

I have a ****ty screen protector on it now, and yes I have a case. My buddy's screen cracked while in a case from a waist high fall.
I haven't needed a screen protector since gorilla glass. That's been like 4 phones ago. I never experienced scratching like I have now.
Seems like you may be a little to rough...Buy a case. Hell even a flip cover would provide "Some" protection. No one ever plans to drop their phone, it happens. Even the smallest dent would bother me lol.
solution = get a case + screen protector. Honestly this is a device you use all day and carry with you. You are bound to drop it, let it slip out of your hand or watch it fall out of your pocket, bag, etc. dropping phones happens! it not just some myth..

Smartass solution: Take better care of your stuff. I've had a cell phone for 8 years and not once have I dropped any of them on a hard surface.
Real solution: Get a protective case, not a cheap little plastic something. Otterbox Defender or Trident Kraken.

buy it at best buy and buy the black tie for 9.99
when i ordered mine from verizon i went on youtube to learn about it and saw a guy drop an iphone and the S3 from his pocket level. Both screens cracked.
verizon offered for 6.99 two repairs per year each at a cost of 100. And, no more than 2 per year!
Best buy i found out for 9.99 will repair or replace for nothing and as many times as you like!!!
I canceled verizon and waited till best buy had it and bought it there with the black tie plan.

I've got a small scratch on my screen now that drives me nuts. I've never used screen protectors on my Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note and never had a scratch.
I have no idea how it happened. I am very careful about putting it in empty pockets, laying it face-up, etc.

Along the same lines, I've got the gray Speck Candyshell on mine and love it. I haven't dropped it (yet...but I will) and I'm confident it will protect it. FWIW, I've also got the ZAGG HD screen protector, so mine is well-protected.
I can't imagine people using a phone like this without some sort of case. Everyone knows how the shiny back of the Candyshell scratches, but I couldn't care less about that. I look at it like this...the scratches I see on the case would be on the back cover of the phone if it wasn't on there. Better for the case to take the damage than the phone.

A small speck of sand in your pocket is sufficient to cause a scratch, depending on how it rubs the screen.
The candy shell designs are very good tbh. I had the Speck single-piece, in black, on my Galaxy Note and it felt great. It had the lifted lip edge for the screen and a mixture between hard plastic and TPU/silicon. It cost me $45 for that case not $5 for a silicone case like those guys that cracked their phones.

I was shocked today, I found 3 small scratches on my Note 2 screen. As I understand it has a gorilla glass coating and it is scratch resistant

Yep. After a couple of days I ended up with some light scratches right where I swipe the screen. Same thing with never dropping it...
Went immediately to get a flip cover after that. (bummed because I prefer naked phones)
I bought this before I bought the phone:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009F25Z6S/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i01
Fits great, its not smooth the touch as a naked one, but hey....No glove, no love.
My gorilla screens have scratched with that sand in the pocket. Kind of easy for that here in Florida.
There is a thread like this in every forum. Gorilla glass dont mean **** when it comes in contact with any material harder than.. well GLASS!!
Bottom line is anything harder than Gorilla glass which has a hardness between 8+9 will scratch the surface.
Iron, steel, nickel, lead, gold, silver or any medal are softer than gorilla glass, so they should not scratch the glass.
On the other hand, sand contains quartz and it could scratch gorilla glass, for example when sand is in your pockets (after a walk on the beach).
One more thing:
a common misconception is: 'make something sharp and it will scratch'. it's wrong. you can make your fingernail or your key as sharp as possible, it is still softer than the glass and it will not scratch.
So, no, keys wont scratch it (steel), but anything harder than 8 on the scale will with no problem. So anybody that has no scratches obviously hasnt made contact to the screen with anything harder than a 8 on this scale.
Hardness Substance or mineral
0.2–0.3 caesium, rubidium
0.5–0.6 lithium, sodium, potassium
1 talc
1.5 gallium, strontium, indium, tin, barium, thallium, lead, graphite

4 fluorite, iron, nickel
4 to 4.5 platinum, steel
5 apatite, cobalt, zirconium, palladium, tooth enamel, obsidian (volcanic glass)
5.5 beryllium, molybdenum, hafnium

Well so much for throwing GN2 into my surf bag.
Gorrilla glass on Galaxy Note 2 HUGE disappointment! Scratches easily.
I have had the note 1 for about a year now without a screen protector and the only time i started seeing fine scratches on it was after 2 months or so.At the time had high hopes for Gorilla Glass and wasn't disappointed at all given my usage.
I got the Galaxy note 2 2 weeks ago and already there are fine scratches on it!!!???
I am shocked and surprised because I have not started using it officially as my daily driver (still got the note 1) and it has been in a pocket or on a soft surface screen up (waiting for the covers to arrive).
This has made me to start putting into question the build quality of Corning and Samsung.
Why such a sudden outrage you ask.
1. Its because the Note 2 is a premium device and quality has to be ensured from the word go!
2. The S-Pen! The device is meant to be used with the S-Pen, therefore they had to make sure the screen is resistant to scratches! Duh!
3. The Note 1 fared way better than this with heavier usage. (Trust me it has very faint scratches after a year's usage!)
Planning to visit the Service Center to see what they have to say.
Otherwise will sell this and wait for a good batch
When I got my S3, I put in in my pocket right away, clean soft cloths. Still got it good. Went and bought the flip cover then and there. Not another scratch yet. My note 2, Sprint didn't have the flip case so I babied it and just today, I made it thank god. Got a cover. I've have stuff on my hands from just playing with my self... So its easy to do. Its really the best that can be done without a protector. That's just life.
PS I was making a funny. Haha

Just a service announcement.
I'm sure everyone that owns this phone was asked if they would like to purchase screen protectors upon purchase.
I'm also sure that people have read about other devices that use gorilla glass getting scratches.
There has been more than enough fair warning to take precautions against these situations.

I was not asked. I read this thread and went back to the Sprint store that same day to pick up a body glove case and a screen protector. The next day I dropped my phone on one of my dogs paws who then thought it was her toy. Recovered it quickly and couldn't be happier to have this extra protection.
I plan to get some nicer feeling stuff later on but this will keep me safe until then.
There's so much back and forth about whether to use a protector and if it interferes with the spen. I have little interest in the spen, I slapped on a screen cover and have had 0 problems. What I do have is peace of mind. Bought the 15 dollar special listed above, got a small bubble but not enough to care. Besides it came with 2 protectors, at some point I'll re-do it.
My 2 cents.

I'm happy to report that it has no effect on the spen if installed correctly.
The debate on the screen protector is a simply one. People screens are being scratched. People who aren't even going to the beach are getting scratched screens. I have read reports of keys leaving scratch marks when people try to show off even though that shouldn't have been possible. As a good rule of thumb, just because it isn't easy to scratch doesn't mean it will not get scratched.
If you really worried about finding scratches on your device then put a screen protector on it ASAP. Don't let anyone else talk you out of it. They didn't buy your device and they aren't going to replace if something happens. If you want to go naked and not worry about babying your device just dont' be shocked if you find any scratches on it. My mom throws her around and could careless if it is in prefect condition as long as the device still works.

She had the old nexus back when it first came out through Verizon and I think it was a 300 dollar phone. Her job brought it for her so technically she didn't spend anything on it and that is probably why she doesn't care about the condition it is in.
Now that was informative

The End of Screen Protectors?

Coincidence? Note 2's Gorilla Glass 2 can't even resist a minor drop, lol.

Three times as tough

GLASS BLOWER Corning has revealed that it will showcase its next generation Gorilla Glass 3 at CES in Las Vegas next week, which it claims is three times as tough as its previous version.
On its website, Corning took away the air of surprise from CES, telling the world that Gorilla Glass 3 will make its debut at the show next week. It told us what we can expect from the upgraded screen protection material, saying that it will be three times more durable than its Gorilla Glass 2 technology.
With three times more toughness, the glass supposedly will show 40 percent fewer visible scratches than before and come with 50 percent more shock resistant strength - good for those who are constantly dropping their devices.
That's not all Corning has got up its sleeve for this year's CES, as the firm will also be showing off its optical fibre technology.
Wendell Weeks, the chairman, CEO and president of Corning said, "This year at CES, Corning will demonstrate its industry leadership in specialty glass and fiber optic technologies with the introduction of two products designed to enhance and extend the capabilities of consumers' favorite devices."
"These new innovations build on the increasingly important and continually evolving role of highly engineered glass technologies in delivering improved product performance and functionality through touch capabilities, protective cover glass, and device connectivity."
Corning is promising to reveal all on 7 January. We'll be at CES in Las Vegas next week.

Meh. For some reason I still think it will break just as easily as gorilla glass 2
from my Galaxy Note 2 using Tapatalk 2
my note 2 fell on a wood table twice on the screen and no damage and it also fell when i was holding it on the bus and no damage..
My first Note 2 fell two feet onto its left corner and shattered the glass. My second Note 2 was stolen! I'm on my third, and keys or anything remotely hard in my pocket has scratched the glass multiple times.
I'm now using a screen protector (and a case) and it's a life saver. No problems with the stylus either.
screen protectorsvare worth it!
Ya I swapped my white gn2 for this guys titanium one . And this guy had a case and screen protector on it. He even threw in a new car charger. Good thing I got the white one initially. Lol

Why would you knowingly put your phone in a pocket with items that can scratch the screen you kind of deserve it

Just cause something new is released doesn't mean it's not gonna break. The actual breakthru is having slimmer digitizers which brings the content closer to your eyes with less distortion. Assuming something is stronger is not a good enough argument when the screens keep getting thinner and bigger. It's simple physics.
*laughs* well the day i put my screen protector on i got angry and threw my phone. im not sure if its a nick on the screen or the protector. shrugs
I used to hate SP's till my screen got scratched. Now it's JLG or Spigen protectors from here on out.

Knowingly is the problem term in your post. People don't knowingly do things that will damage their property. Theres a word I would like to introduce you to: accident.
Do you honestly think anyone knowingly or intentionally drops their phone, or puts their phone in their pocket with keys? Or are you just being a prick?
You need to wear skinny jeans to know which pocket has keys, when the keys are constantly stabbing you in the leg. I wear jeans... normal jeans. My junk can breathe, I can bend over, and I barely feel things in my pockets. The squeeze on your balls must be what gives you the condescending attitude.
There's an entire industry that profits from people doing things "unknowingly" and its called insurance. Im sure you don't have a phone protector, because as you would say: why would you knowingly let your phone land on the ground? If you do that, you deserve it.

another way to know which pocket has keys without the need for skinny jeans is to simply remember which pocket you put them in :good:
I gotta agree with the other guy here. There are things called accidents, but there are also things called avoidable accidents. Putting your phone in a pocket with keys is an avoidable accident. Dropping your phone may not have been an avoidable accident; however, placing it inside of a case is a way to avoid the accident of damaging it when it does drop. In your case a screen protector is probably the best way to go so that you can avoid scratching your screen when you "accidentally" forget which pocket has your keys.
I carried an HTC Sensation with Gorilla Glass for over a year in my pocket with change (no keys) and the screen never got scratched. My wife now has it and carries it in her purse with no screen protector and there are just a few very light scratches on the screen. My impression of Gorilla Glass is that it will survive minor scratching incidents, not drops.

Its not just about tracking where you put your keys. The glass also gets scratched by zippers going in and out of zippered pockets, and rivets on jeans. I dont need to worry about these things. A screen protector for a few dollars is easy and quick protection without any drawbacks. I got the iSmooth variety and it works perfectly.
My last phone, the htc g2, was impervious to scratches and falls. The phone ride around in the same pocket as keys often. No key could scratch that glass. I had no reason to believe a phone released 2 years later would have such a soft screen. It wasn't until I found small scratches that could catch my nail did I realize what was going on.
