Now that I'm rooted... - OnePlus 7T Questions & Answers

Hey everyone. I just have a couple questions regarding some root things I'm trying to accomplish. First, I was wanting to change some system UI sounds. Mainly the lock and unlock sounds. Every other device I have used had the sound files in system/media/audio. But the 7T has them in product/media/audio. Don't know if that's a OnePlus thing or Android 10 thing. But my issue is, I can't make changes to that folder for some reason. Using solid explorer with root privileges, anything I try to do fails. Any ideas?
Second, is there an easy way to change or remove the lock screen shortcuts at the bottom? I don't see the point in having voice assistant and camera there when I can do both with the power button.

System is permanent read only in Android 10 and there is nothing you can do about it. Your best shot it to use magisk a module (no idea what).
https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/220892/system-partition-locked-to-read-only
For the second thing, I don't think so.

Thank you. I did do a little searching after posting and found that Android 10 has a read only system. So that sucks. I guess that explains why Titanium Backup couldn't uninstall a system app (Netflix).
I have tried System UI Tuner in the Play Store and it has the ability to change the shortcuts but it's not as straight forward as I'd like it to be. Was hoping there is another app out there that could do it better. GravityBox has the options but I haven't tried it due to a lot of issues people seem to be having with it. Even if I did get it installed, the first issue of the read only system might not let it change it anyway. So I may just be out of luck with that too. Man, I'm not liking what Google is doing to Android lately.

[Q] Apps

I know this topic has probably been talked about already, and I am pretty sure I have already read a thread exactly like mine, but the question gets asked and then it goes off in different directions not giving an exact answer.
I have a Galaxy Nexus, brand new as of Saturday Jan 4. As soon as I got it, it got an update, I'm guessing to Android 4.0.2 since that is the version I have. My question has to do with My Verizon Mobile app, the Books app and the Email app. Will disabling these apps screw up anything with the phone, like are they very connected to any other apps or setting with the phone ?
Also, is disable like delete, if not how do I truly delete an app ? And while on topic of getting rid of things i dont use that wont effect the phone/other apps/anything, what other stock apps that come on the phone from the start could I get rid of with no side effects at all ?

Those 3 should be able to be disabled with no adverse effects.

Disable is just like it sounds. It removes the app from menus and stops it from running. In order to fully 100% delete system-level apps, you must be rooted.
There are many different threads/lists of "safe to disable" apps.

[Q] We have root? Great! What can it do?

Guys, please. The point of my thread is NOT whether the root claim is a lie or not. I am asking some questions about what can be done with it regardless, so please, if anyone knows inform me, but don't post guessing games of whether it is real or not.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So the Note 4 is actually my first device I've owned where I didn't have an unlocked bootloader. Because of this, I'm not sure whether all the modifications I've made to my past devices were enabled because I had an unlocked bootloader.
The only thing I know we can't do is install custom roms.
So... that leaves me with a question. What kinds of things can we do with just root?
On top of that, I have some specific questions (Might think of more later) :
Will root let us be able to install the auto-brightness control that the international version of the Note 4 has? If you don't know, you're able to adjust how low or high the auto brightness stages will go without turning off auto brightness on that version. It's so much nicer than having to turn off auto, adjust to where you want, and then remember to turn auto back on when you leave that environment.
Can we remap the capacitive multitask button to be a menu button instead? And to remap long-pressing that button to be the new multitask?
Thanks!
There's safe strap which allows us to have custom roms.

did they get a safestrap to work?
I'm assuming that they will. I suppose I should have worded my post different.
So it should have said, if we get safe strap we will be able to have custom roms.
It's not quiet the same as a unlocked bootloader though.
We have root?
what proof?
Well regardless of whether we have custom roms through some other means, I'd personally most interested in those 2 questions I stated. That's honestly the things I want most with root at the moment.
Where is root?
Root has not been proven yet. Patience. Everyone is jumping the gun here.

My main and only real reason for wanting root is for Ad Block ESPECIALLY in youtube. I hate those commercials... You can install Ad Block without root (as I just did) but it just doesn't seem to work as well as it did with my last rooted device... Although I'm not sure if this is the app devs getting more creative with how they get ads through or possibly even a Lollipop things...
The other main reason was so Rocket Player could delete podcasts I had already listened too.. That was resolved with the Lollipop update so I am good to go there...
Some really like Root for Titanium backup to back up ALL app data and settings... This was handy for me back when I was flashing ROMS all the time but without that capability I don't see myself having much of a need for that since the games I play store the data in the Android folder which I don't need root to copy/backup
Another great thing that has come about the last year or so is Xposed modules.. These give you just about ANY customization you could possibly want but of course in order to use them you will also need root..... There is a great app that pulls the commercials from Youtube which I will be checking out if Root is actually here... As I said before I hate hate the ads... Not that I don't buy FULL versions of some of the apps if I find them useful because I do... But with things like Chrome and Youtube I really miss the option of them being disabled... Yes I know Firefox has this built in but I like y Chrome for the ability to send pages from my PC to my phone with the click of a button....
I find that the Note 4 with the help of Apex PRO has helped me gain many of the features I once wanted Root and the ability to flash things for... So now I am just looking for the ability to kill some ads....
There are also a few apps I would delete or freeze with Titanium Backup once we had that option... Turning them off is nice but I want the space back...

I'm with you on the adblock and it's one of the things I've been looking forward too also. The ads mobile gets is ridiculous, I'm fine with them on most websites on the computer but the mobile versions really kill some things.
Xposed is an interesting topic to me, I've never had any experience with it since I've never really needed it. It will be fun to see what they do. Thanks for the info.

Good point I forgot about being able to add multi window for non supported apps... It would be really nice for Tapatalk to support it
Ooh multi-window on almost any app sounds awesome!
you can remove pre-loaded carrier apps that cause sluggish instability. improve battery life, and speed up application start times.
Mw-pen app enabler, ive been using since i got this phone. Let's you add apps to multi window. Should work for non system apps. It's worked for me. been my solution until we get root, if we do.

Just an fyi: You can disable bloatware without having root by using @gatesjunior's Debloater utility. Here's the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2998294

[Samsung Galaxy S3] With [Lollipop 5.1] [Custom ROM] Info, Help, And Troubleshooting

This thread is for...
• Helping you to understand why you would want to upgrade your Samsung Galaxy S3 to a 5.1 ROM.
• Helping to address any concerns prior to this upgrade.
• Helping you to accomplish this upgrade.
• Helping you to troubleshoot and fix any issues after this upgrade.
• Talking about custom kernels, mods, tweaks, custom recoveries, apps, privacy, etc. for the Galaxy S3 running a 5.1 ROM.
• Talking about anything else similar to the above that pertains to the GS3 with a 5.1 ROM.
Why Would I Want To Upgrade My GS3?
**** Your Galaxy S3 is an amazing machine for how old it is. However support and customization is limited now that there are "better" phones available. Waiting for updates from android can be frustrating. Some newer software may not work for you. Bugs can get on your last nerve. Everyone else seems to have a cooler phone.
**** By upgrading your phone you can unlock its full potential safely without losing important data stored on the phone. Customization, performance, compatibility, and privacy will improve and can get close to or even surpass some of the brand new devices coming out today! My GS3 outperforms my sisters GS6 in many ways!
**** If you decide to make the change you will feel like you have a brand new phone and forget about upgrading anytime soon! Newer models are removing sd card access, removable batteries, privacy measures that protect you, etc. This phone is a beast if you give it a little TLC! If in the end you prefer the older way you can restore your phone to the exact moment before you upgraded and everything will be the same, no harm done! I am assuming you are rooted already, although this may not be necessary if you are flashing a ROM that is pre-rooted like Cyanogenmod.
Issues That I Have Experienced To Be Aware Of Before Upgrading. Most Of These Are Fixed In Recent Builds, But I'm Including The Solutions That Worked For Me Anyway.
• Issue: Blackscreen during phone calls
Fix: For me I used xposed app proximity off. Other solutions can cause high cpu usage due to general, sloppy developing
• Issue: No 4g or mms
Fix: For me i used cm12 ting apn zip
Better fix: use apn backup app prior to upgrade and save settings so you can reapply them on new ROM.
• Issue: Battery drain
Fix: For me I recalibrated my battery and used* Xprivacy and Greenify apps along with built in privacy guard advanced settings to double my battery life
• Issue: No sound when using free phone apps
Fix: For me i had to edit my build.prop real quickly and changed mic from digital to analog. Consult with a professional before editing your build.prop
• Issue: Root access denied
Fix: For me I had to enable developer settings and enable root access there
• Issue: App not opening
Fix: For me I had to boot to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik and then reboot.
• Issue: No Google apps or playstore
Fix: For me i had to flash gapps after update.
• Issue: Stuck in boot
Fix: For me i had to pull battery and hold power button down for 30sec. Then using button combination reboot to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik and then reboot.
Things To Do Before Upgrading To Be Safe
~ Research ROMS and select one that is for your device model# specifically (ex: sprint s3 is different from verizon s3). If unsure just ask!
~ Make sure your battery is fully charged.
~ This guide is for the sprint variant. Other variants may have locked bootloaders and if so this could brick your device without first unlocking.
~ Install custom recovery (I recommend TWRP. CWM has known problems with our device, so please don't use it if you care about your device).
~ Create a TWRP backup (also called nandroid backup) and put on sd card.
~ Backup your texts to sd card using app called Sms backup and restore.
~ Backup music, pics, vids, downloads, contacts, calendar, etc. to sd card.
~ Backup apps to sd card using Titanium Backup App. Although it will be better to re-download them after upgrading.
~ Email yourself links to your bookmarks in browser.
~ Screenshot anything that you cant figure out how to save.
~ Look at each app in your list of app and think "is there any data in this app that I don't want to lose?"
~ Backup anything else not mentioned above that you care about to sd card.
~ Download ROM zip and gapps zip to sd card.
How To Accomplish This Upgrade
~ If there is anything you don't understand yet, please ask now!
~ Do everything listed under "Things To Do Before Upgrading To Be Safe".
~ Verify in file manager that your nandroid backup, all important data, and all zips needed for upgrade are on your sd card not internal storage.
~ Make sure your battery is fully charged.
~ Boot to custom recovery (Please use TWRP!)
~ Pull out sd card so that you don't accidentally erase it.
~ Select wipe-advanced wipe-and check the boxes for dalvik, system, data, internal storage, cache.
~ Reinsert sd card.
~ Select install-micro sd card (touch where it says, "storage: internal storage" and switch to micro sd card)
~ Find and select new 5.1 ROM zip and Gapps zip on sd card.
~ Flash them and reboot to system.
~ Allow about 15min reboot.
~ Go through initial setup of ROM to get to home screen.
~ Let it sit on home screen for about 10 more minutes to allow background processes to update.
~ Get ready to show off your phone because it will be amazing!
Give it time to reboot and dont interrupt the process it typically takes 15 min total. If you are stuck at boot image still then pull the battery out, and hold down power button for 30 seconds. Then replace battery and reboot directly to recovery by holding down power, volume up, and home. When it flashes logo and in top left corner you see blue writing, then let go of power button and continue to hold volume up and home until you see the recovery screen. Then wipe cache and dalvik cache and reboot. If this does not work, then all you need to do is boot to recovery again using hardbutton combo like above, and restore your nandroid backup from sd card. If you brick your device by making a mistake somehow in all of this, and you forgot to nandroid, then you need to search for the debrick image for your specific device to start over, or use odin to flash back to stock, but it will come back to life dont worry.
Btw I am running cm12.1 nightly with Dkp kernel, Lspeed mod, Xposed 5.1, and carrier is Ting.
Ask me if you are interested in help to finely tune battery, performance, and privacy after installing your 5.1 ROM.

I'm pretty sure this is just Google App attempting to open the mic for voice search, which was denied since you have it set to ignore (you must use the search app a lot, and/or Google Now). You don't use voice search, so it doesn't impact you. But voice search won't work with that permission set to ignore.
I could be wrong, but the clandestine recording and transmission of audio files would cause a battery and data hit that would be noticed at some point. Besides, they're already using whatever we type (or speak) into search and Gmail for ad targeting and that's the deal we make for using their "free" services.

They are attempting to open mic but why when i dont ever hit voice search? I know it wont work thats why i set to ignore. U are right that we agree to them using info for using apps for free. U make good points but ultimately u r taking their word for it that we should trust them. I will hunt down some documents tonight to show u some problems and bugs with google in the past. This has been noticed by other people. For example there have been "bugs" when after using google voice it stays on. Heres an article from forbes that is related too but they are not even talking about many problems

In fact when google started this about 10 years or so ago we were not giving permission and they had to stop and fix legal scripts before continuing. Lots of articles from back in those days whem i first started knowing about this seem to have "disappeared" from the internet. Im sure google had a part in that because it was bad advertising. I know someone who listens to similar recordings made by a popular app as a full time job and transcribes them to text for their "marketing purposes". Of course we are agreeing to the fine print but i dont think we really realize who they are sharing that info with, and that its okay for them to listen when app malfunctions, background voices are transcribed too, etc. I know i sound crazy but there is much proof of untrusted individuals accessing legit data and using as they want. Look at all Edward Snowdens revelations so far and more are coming. I just cant trust all these companies that cooperate with govt info requests. Even encryption as we know it is a lie and not random. I got crazy day but would love to talk more on this tonight if u want

I'm not saying it's not possible, or that I trust Google. And, to be sure, there are plenty of vulnerabilities and exploits out there, as in the examples you mentioned. But I don't think the specific issue you have with Google app is an attempt by Google to spy on you. You say you don't hit voice search, but do you hit search at all? Also, if you have a launcher that has "OK Google" functionality (I don't), that might cause it, too. My phone (SPH-L710, Exodus, dkp) indicates that that Record Audio was triggered 114 times by Google app, which I estimate to be about the number of times I've hit search, and I hit search again and the number increased by one. Now, if you don't use search or have any "OK Google" functionality, then your Record Audio number is curious.

I will look into that thanks for info. I know i accidently hit google search maybe 5 to 10 times a day but it still seems high. Dont really care since its blocking it anyway but i will try other browser and see if that helps. Just dont know why its trying to use voice on regular searches still seems wrong. I know its nothing personal to spy on me alone. They are probably fairly spying on everyone lol! Nice to see a fellow DKP user!

I did have to do pretty much what you advised, with a new flash, new gapps, reboot. flash rom, flash gapps, flash apn, reboot. open apn settings and verify info. At least something close to that.
Thanks for the information, really appreciated. I am running it on liquidsmooth 4.4.4. at this time. I had other issues with 5.1 stuff. Also using BMS kernel.

Haven't had time to mess around with it yet. I'm actually on AICP 10.0, which is based on CM 12.1. I think it's only officially supported for Android 5.0.2, but if you would give it a shot, that'd be great!

New to Android and just Bought a Razer

Hey all. So as the title says, I'm new to Android, I've had an iPhone for like 10 years now and fancied a change. Bought the Razer on Monday and was wondering whats the benefits of Rooting the phone? As someone who used to Jailbreak the iPhone for tweaks etc, why should I root my phone? And is there any advice/help for making my phone better out of the box?
My main reason is to block ads, web and YouTube.
Oh by the way welcome to the dark side. Lol
If ads don't bother you i personally wouldn't bother with all the trouble
I root mainly because of xposed/gravity box and ads blocker

What's that?
Root is not that hard. Go to this post scroll down to "Prebuilt boot image:" download the IMG and flash it.

I use root for several different things.
1) Get rid of Ads
2) Grant extra rights to an app called MacroDroid (This app allows you to fully automate your phone through macros, like setting up a rule that says when the phone connects to my work wi-fi then it automatically will switch to vibrate only. This particular rule does not require root but there are extra functions granted by root that allow you to pretty much create whatever kind of rule you want to suit your life. It's a very powerful app and useful app.)
3) Get access to the true file structure (or root) of the phone allowing you to change undercover things if you know what you are doing.
4) I have another app called Social Contact Photo sync that needs root to match up my phone contacts with their Facebook photos.
5) I have an app called Tiles that allows you to change out and add a few extra buttons to the quick menu in the pulldown tray.
6) This is probably the most important one though, Titanium Backup. This should be the first app you install after getting root. Not only does it back up the apps and things on your phone but it also saves the data within those apps. So any custom settings and whatnot you have made in the apps will be saved. It also has many many more features, such as cloud saves to Dropbox or Google Drive.
Ultimately though the real point of Rooting is to grant you admin access to do whatever you want with it, just the way a PC is. You own it, so make it yours.

Awesome. That's very helpful and sounds like I'll be doing that then! One note, should I force the Oreo update first or leave it?

If you wanna try rooting i recommend you to back up your ohone ir sync it with google, then download the factory images of razer,
From here you can flash the factory images of oreo and have your phone factory reset, then from there set up your phone.
Oh to use the factiry images, you need to unlock your bootloader.
IM in the same boat, ive only ever owned iPhones going back to the 3GS the RazerPhone is my 1st Android phone too slowely getting use to it however the only problems i have is with lack of secuirty and OS updates that we are use to on Apple devices

So how do I go about doing that?
There's always a guide
https://forum.xda-developers.com/razer-phone/how-to/guide-to-unlocking-bootloader-t3706462
Please be aware that unlocking your phone will delete all data so backup pictures etc

So is it worth waiting on 3 to push the Oreo update? (I'm from UK) or should I unlock the bootloader and force the update?
If you want to root your phone just go for the unlocking and debranding your phone to get Oreo and the easy root.
If you don't want to root then wait for three I would say since Oreo doesn't bring too much new stuff besides autofill in apps and better Dolby Atmos
The guides are all pretty straight forward and if something goes wrong you can always flash the recovery images

Awesome. Thank you so much! If I get lost you're the first person I'll ask for help aha
I should probs ask. But once it's rooted what do I do next? Like to block ads etc
Block Ads without a constantly running process by modifying the HOSTS file, OS Tweaks (L Speed, HEBF Optimizer, ect.), Better Customization (Substratum), more features you can use, Hack games with Game Gaurdian (Useful in games like City Racing 3D where you can hack the IAPs to get them free, because $100 for one car is too expensive), Bypass regional or device restrictions on the Play Store by spoofing a different devices specs.... and for my favorite root ability, ViPER Audio (Nothing sounds as near as good, not even Dolby Atmos)!
The list goes on and on... I love root. Most devices I use I root. However rooting voids your warranty. Also some devices have better development and are more stable, the Razer Phone is still new so it may be a while longer before we have more ROM options with root.
There are two types of root. System and Systemless (Recommended, especially for new users since a factory reset will often undo changes you made that may of bricked your phone when something went wrong)

That sounds amazing tbh. Is there a tutorial for the systemless? And how would one go about installing the "add-ons" so to speak?

Personally I would wait until there's more development and things are more stable... but if you so ask...
First you should get TWRP. https://forum.xda-developers.com/razer-phone/development/twrp-razer-phone-t3727333 After installing, back everything up to your microSD card. Then you need to install Magisk (This is the systemless root, I usually myself don't use systemless root and I prefer system root as I'm more careful and I want some of my changes to stay even after a factory reset). After that, you may get Magisk modules which add functionality and use some root apps.
Just a quick note, it does seem like there are some minor bugs with the Oreo update on the Razer.
Me and my gf have matching razers and both our phones have stopped syncing voicemails to our dialer and our dialers keep crashing.
We have also had a problem with the phone becoming entirely unresponsive even to force power off and after about 5 minutes the OS would crash and reboot then it would be fine.
This all seems to be a bug within Oreo, the only other phone to ahve the update seems to be the Pixel phones and they seem to be reporting similar issues.
I never had these issues prior to the update and we have both had these phones since day one (very awesome phone by the way regardless of the issues).

Final Thought: Should I Root S8+ SM-G955U?

I've only rooted a Samsung device since the Samsung Tab S 10.5.
Reasons I found why I would root the Samsung Galaxy S8+ SM-G955U:
- Adblocker (I don't mind blocking ads from apps/Samsung but I also don't mind them being there...)
- Removing System apps (I'd probably only remove a few that I found useless/don't mind them being there...)
- Backup/restore (I'd make a backup, but I can also do this without root I believe?)
- Using SmartThings to stream to my Vizio but having a full 65' screen with the proper aspect ratio. Yes this annoying not to see a full screen on a bigger screen that you stream to from your phone, it was new to me and I was happy with it but also hoping for a bigger screen output.
- Easy to overclock/return to normal clock for testing/emulation purposes and not for extended use.
- I don't believe I would do any button remapping on my phone, but I'd do anything that makes my phone look even better and have more effective usage.
- Background settings with color/image by root?
- Lockscreen wallpaper can be changed by root?
- I am guessing that I can turn on my flashlight with a button while the screen is off with root?
- Double tap home to instant sleep phone with root. Isn't there apps in Google Play that do things like this?
- Anything that increases sound and video/picture quality with root.
Reasons why I won't root:
- Samsung loss of apps
- Loss of software updates?
- Re-customize the internal portion of my phone . I don't have to worry about my emulator files on my SD card or my music. I also started using my phone without rooting in mind and excitedly set it up.
- I don't have warranty, I treat my phones rather well even when I rooted my Samsung Tab S 10.5, it is still rooted and solid running. For my tablet the warranty ran out. For this device, I got it refurbished with no warranty.
- UPDATE: I forgot to mention, I'd also have to deal with a fixed Netflix rather than the actual app and its updates.
Sadly I'll loose a number of things by Samsung that I read about. I'll then have to remove those apps and I have been happy with what I have. There are also plenty of risks while it's rooted + bootloader unlocked.
Wonder if my battery would drain more with root depending on all the functions I would want.
I also wonder if I would get anymore software updates.
I read about developer updates that are better and faster than what software updates release.
What do you think about whether or not I should root now? Some of the things I want to do listed above may have apps for that without root as well as I am not annoyed by ads or by extra system apps with 64GB ROM. Anyone believe that some of the things I really want to do comes with an app instead of having to root?
The most useful things would be tap a button to turn on my flashlight when the screen is off, easy to overclock and put back, SmartThings resize on 65' screen, change the customization color/images of my phone further, double tap to sleep, increase sound and video/picture quality, though I like the way my phone sounds.
G955U is a bootloader locked device. There is no way to root it. How are you saying that you can root it?
So I have SM-G955U as well, with version 1 bootloader. Can I root this?
Also I want to use the Verizon bands so is there any recommendation for what I should try to do?
thus far, i have found absolutely no clear instructions on how in the heck to do this.
there is so much noise on this forum about older variations and over seas models.

Correct cause I believe it's the one I'm using. I was 955u and had lots of issues trying to find a proper guide that worked but it wasn't till I paid someone for the service to do It for me that I finally got root. And I think afterwards it changed my phone to g955u1. Also yes been on 7.0 since I got the phone rooted 2 years ago

LOL he speaks on that which he knows nothing about
all jokes aside, I am getting tired of having to use Nougat. losing support for a lot of stuff I like. the only thing that keeps me from giving up root is Viper4Android. where else am I supposed to find a sound driver like that?
