Hello,
I have recently purchased a LG Nexus 5X, and I'm annoyed with the data usage of Google Play Serivces. It uses about 10MB per day, which is not terrible, but since my monthly FUP limit is 300MB, you can imagine it can be fairly annoying. With my old phone, which was a Xiaomi Redmi 1S, I sometimes, although very rarely, made it through the month without using up all of the FUP.
I have previously bought an LG G Flex 2, which I returned, after trying several factory data resets, because of this issue, and bought the Nexus. Now, the Nexus is having the very same problem, although it does not seem as bad.
I have changed no settings whatsoever, after switching from the Redmi 1S. I don't use Google Fit, but I do use Google Play Music and have Google Now enabled. But I had all of this enabled on the old phone as well. Is this something, that Android 5.0+ does (the Redmi has 4.4.4)? Is there any way around this? I cannot disable background data for Play Services, because I need the notifications. Is it maybe possible that there is something wrong with my Google Account, like some option that drains data a lot enabled? One of my friends has a G Flex 2 too, and as far as I could tell, he did not have this issue.
I am very grateful for any help on this matter, because I am running out of ideas. Thank you very much for any help I get.
Google Play services handles Google Cloud Messages which powers quite some services and applications.
You could use NetGuard to restrict internet access to Wi-Fi or when screen is on only.

Yes, I know it downloads data from quite a lot of applications. But it did this even when nothing, except the default apps was installed. I think it's downloading data in 6MB "batches". Is there really nothing I can do about it? Or is there at least a way to explain why it didn't happen on my Redmi 1S device?
Why doesn't the original Pixel running Android (i.e. the pixel c) have wifi assistant or Google assistant? I mean even the Nexus devices out there are getting wifi assistant from project Fi.

I've been combing the web to find answers for this exact question myself. Having recently ditched my Lenovo yoga tab 3 pro for the Google pixel C, I hoped it would have some longevity with software from Google. I figured the "pixel" line of products would be first to get this feature but it appears that the phones are the only devices getting assistant for now. That really stoked me as odd for some reason though, it's like a missed opportunity to really show consumers that this "Pixel" thing is leading us in a new direction.

agreed.... i'd pay for project fi without a nexus or pixel phone to get access to the wifi hotspots for the pixel c. But it's not an option on their website.... Hopefully when i get the pixel phone and activate project fi for the phone, the option to use the hotspots will show up on my pixel c. but i doubt it. Regardless, there should be a 5 or 10 dollar a month option for the pixel c to use the wifi hotspot capability.
All.- as an fyi, if you have project Fi, it seems you'll be able to get the wifi assistant on the pixel c. Verified as I have a pixel phone on project Fi.
I'm really confused as to why they haven't added Google Assistant as well as Pixel Launcher to the full Pixel lineup.. After all, getting the Pixel C and being amazed with it's design and functionality are part of what made me excited to buy the Pixel phone when it was announced. One feature from Pixel Launcher that would greatly help the Pixel C is being able to swipe up from anywhere on the bottom to get to the app tray
My Pixel XL GPS doesn't report accurate location during navigation and it causes the navigation app to always show my car a few feet off the road and keep recalculating the route. It is more severe in Waze but it is noticeable in Google Map too. Someone created a video of the issue: See this videohttps://youtu.be/LyOZW3BSQcY
Talked to Google support per usual they say go to Safe mode or reset the device but it didn't help. Anybody else observed this issue? It is common enough that Sprint created a document on how to address it but it doesn't help. People have reported it on Reddit and Verizon forums too but wanted to see what has been the experience here.
no video link. Regardless I have only encountered what you describe once when there was a split in the highway for an exit. After I started pointing a different direction it snapped back into place. Outside of that my GPS has been great. I am on Verizon if that matters.

I had an incident yesterday where I was continuing on a freeway at 70 MPH,. But Google Maps thought I had veered from its directions by exiting on a low speed very curvy road, so regenerated directions for that. This never happened wth any of my Nexus devices.
Im having this issue as well. Google Maps seems fine, but Waze seems a lot more jumpy and recalculates my route every few seconds. Pretty annoying.

Yea I never seen this issue on any Nexus. Since it seem to be common, not sure if a replacement would solve it. Posted it on Google product forum too to raise it to Google:

Me Too...
So are you guys still having problems with this?
It's gotten to the point where I don't want to use Waze anymore - and I LOVE Waze. It seems like it should just be some sort of software tweak to fix this problem...
I hope it at least gets fixed before Waze comes to Android Auto.
Lame was hoping this got better and was looking forward to a working gps on Pixel.
Ive had this issue eventually pop up on every device. Currently on LG v10.. Upsetting :/

Try deleting the app data and cache. Then uninstall and reinstall the app. So far its worked for me. Need to test it a few more days before I can confirm its a permanent fix.
I saw this post so I turned on Google Maps & used it to navigate home from work, about 15 miles. Not a big test, but it worked fine, followed be closely, always had me exactly where I was on the road down to the lane I was in.
I have had zero issues with Maps. I do not use Waze. (on ATT)
I have had the GPS issue first on the Pixel (was not following my location accurately and would not give me turn by turn directions) spoke with Google support, all their solutions failed including the factory reset so returned the Pixel and upgrades to the XL model have had it for 3 days and started having same issue again today!!! This issue is on maps and I have only downloaded normal certified apps I was very excited about the 1st Google phone as I love their products but this is very discouraging as the exact same problem has now happened with BOTH phone models. I have Verizon service but based on all of these comments am starting to believe it is a hardware issue and not the service provider. Hoping they can get this bug fixed and quickly otherwise I will be returning for a different device.
My Pixel XL was fine for the first few days. Then I put it in a case and rooted it, and ever since then the GPS is acting wonky in Waze, losing its fix, not getting satellites, acting nuts.
Trying to determine the issue...
I find it awful on maps!! I've had it showing me going backwards and the rotation is off!
Tried with waze and it was OK though so I've no idea

Waze and Google Maps both keep losing GPS signal.
Waze starts to go absolutely haywire.
Google Maps just says "seeking GPS signal" every 30 seconds
Ive done a full factory reset and it's still happening.
Maybe something wrong with the GPS chip, or on the underlying OS??
Just spent 2 hours troubleshooting with a Google tech. They will be calling me back son (they just told me to test it after a full factory reset). No luck!
I'm also having this issue with the pixel xl. Seems much worse in Waze but happens in Google maps a little as well.
Well my GPS died some time this weekend. I was loosing GPS lock on google maps. GPS test is no longer shows it lock onto any satellites when my nexus 6 sees 7-9. Replacement is on the way. I would recommend anyone having this problem check with a gps test/info app and make sure the hardware is working correctly.
I replicated the problem on NDE63V, the OS the device shipped on and was working on before, along with NMF26O and NMF26Q.
Waze is unusable now. I am seeing the same behavior. Google Maps is ok, but waze jumps all over the place.
It is pure speculation, but I wonder if it is tied to how the OS is using the accelerometers. I think google Maps uses both the GPS position and accelerometers.

1/2/2017 - Google Confirming Software Issue with GPS
I'm having the same problem.
Last week my GPS on my Google Pixel stopped working. When I open google maps, it shows the blue dot correctly with the compass working properly. However, when I start navigation or driving mode, it does not work. I also tried Waze and that also does not work - just holds on Searching for GPS. I also tried the app 'GPS Test' and it shows 'No Fix' on the GPS Status.
I contacted google pixel support this morning and they confirmed Google is aware of the problem and have identified it as a software issue.

That's wonderful! Did they give you any information on how you others can refer to the issue, such as a bug number or anything?
I'm also having the same issue with my Pixel when using Waze, and since stopped using it, due to it being redirected consistently. Switching to Maps Navigation the issue doesn't seem to exists, however, if I just use Maps, I can see that the compass is not oriented in the correct direction, and have to do the figure 8 calibration consistently so that it can be oriented correctly. The blue indicator dot is also not correctly located on the map, and can be off by many feet/meter. This is the only way I have been able recreate the issue I'm seeing with Waze but on Maps this time, it seems that Maps Navigation is more forgiving on the GPS irregularities than Waze, which is why Maps Navigation is a much better experience than Waze on the Pixel or Pixel XL.
Haven't experienced anything drastic with the gps lock, but I do notice that the direction of where i'm facing is constantly off. Tried calibrating the compass to no avail. The direction feature would also throw off driving directions as it doesn't know which way you are headed when stopped.
Longtime Pixel user here...first Samsung phone. Bought the unlocked Z Fold 3, was told it worked with Google Fi...it does, however I don't believe I've been on any other network than T-Mobile. I'd like to be able to force switch carriers or even have the phone switch carriers when necessary...any Samsung tricks I am not aware of here?
Get the app FiSwitch (or similar) there are many on the play store.
I have tried a few.. none allow for carriers switching. Looks like there are some permissions missing
Tiring to sync to other programs but not having much luck yet. Not to the watch either, have to use Samsung Health.
So, I had the Pixel Watch working just fantastic on the Pixel 6. Now I've upgraded to the Pixel 7 Pro. I read somewhere that I had to reset the watch for it to work, and yes, that was necessary, so I did it.
Now I'm in the process of completely setting up the watch again and I'm almost done.
The one thing that is still insoluble for me is the "Maps" app. When it was set up in the Pixel 6, my home address was showing on the watch screen, on the top where it says "Home" - now, with the Pixel 7 Pro, it does not. I have set everything else exactly the same way as before - but this one setting eludes me. I can't find a way to do this in the phone app, or in the watch - somehow, I think is was kinda automatic with the Pixel 6, but I don't really remember (old guy here - 73, but I think my memory is pretty good...I could be wrong).
Everything is updated to hell and back and somehow I'm missing something.
Can anyone help?
BTW, I'm loving the 7 Pro.
Thanks for any help.
Well, I kinda figured it out - I had to use the Maps app on the phone and that updated itself, and then updated the watch. The whole Pixel 7 Pro setup was a tiny bit weird. For example, I could see the watch was connected to Bluetooth, but setting up some parts of the watch would keep saying "can't connect".
A very odd experience.
All is OK now.
Oh, you got it working??? It is a known issue that for some users (me!) the watch will not update or populate home/work (I'm retired so work is HOME ). I have the 6 Pro. I just got it in the Spring so not yet ready to jump aboard another upgrade. I might try to update Maps on the phone but I expect it will not work.
Interesting. I had the Pixel 6 (non pro) when I first got the watch and it worked right the very first time.
This time I used a brand new Pixel 7 Pro, fresh out of the box, and reset the watch. I realized that I had not yet used Google Maps on the phone, so I did and the watch updated at that time.
Like you, I'm retired and needed "home".
Pixel 7 Pro + Pixel watch: Not working for me.
Everything is updated, work + home is defined on the phone, watch refuses to accept any of it.

Updated, rolled back, rebooted. NOTHING has worked.
I wish I could help you guys, but all I did is set "Home" on Google Maps on my phone.
Maybe deleting the Maps from the watch and starting again? I know fred2546 rebooted and all, but honestly all I did is define "Home" in the phone. Probably doesn't mean much but I have the Pixel 7 Pro.
Pixel 6 Pro.
Now I had defined home but I don''t work so did not define my home a second time. But I will also admit that I do not allow Google to track me in my everyday pursuits and movements. I do not have location history enabled or whatever that setting might be.
I sort of agree about not wanting to be tracked, but some time ago I decided I didn't really care. I'm old (73), retired, and live with my cat - they can send me ads, notifications, and whatnot until the end of time - I will never buy anything that's emailed, or a phone call, to me as an offer, and I block a whole lot of calls - I love playing with them.
But, fred2546, did you get it to work?

It did not work. Yesterday I was on my way out to a bike ride and on the watch did a search. First, it opened with Home/Work which remain undefined. But I put a local sushi joint in the search. It came up with the name and then suggested I see the PHONE. Since I needed to meet the bike riding friend I did not follow up.
Obviously, Google knows quite a bit anyway. I use Google Fi as my carrier and I did use Google Maps while touring around Iceland in Sept.
And I've got a few years on you but no cat!
Get a cat from a shelter and you will be handsomely rewarded by its lunatic personality. I love my Mr. PoopiHead, he's very affectionate and a complete loon.
I am not a cat person. I do on occasion feed friends' cats - more than enough for me!
