So last night I rebooted my phone and found that my fingerprint scanner isn't scanning my finger.
When my screen is locked, the fingerprint scanner doesn't work, it just doesn't respond (it's not consistent, when I use different lock methods (power button method, root method, accessebility method, Xposed method) it works one time and then again stops working)
There are 3 options of what happens:
I turn off the screen and put my finger on the scanner
1) the device unlocks
2) the device screen turns on and shows me the screen as if I pressed the home or power button
3) I get no response (this seems to be happening if I pressed the power button when the device is already locked)
1 and 2 are not always consistent, and I haven't pin pointed what the cause is
If 1) happens, then of course it works as expected and it will vibrate if it's the wrong finger, and unlock if it's correct
If 2) happens, it's the same as 1) just the device doesn't unlock, but just the screen turns on
If 3) happens, then it doesn't matter which finger, there is no response
I tried safe mode, it still didn't work.
I tried magisk core mode, also didn't help.
I saw someone wrote that it might be because of the dinner print gestures, but I don't use them, so I tried to activate them and they fully work even when the scanner isn't scanning my finger...
The scanner itself works, any app that I can use biometrics would recognize my finger...
And I know my fingers are still recognized, I made sure to check in settings... I even removed all my registered fingers and put in new ones, I rebooted between each step to see if it helps...
I have no idea what caused this problem, if any one knows please help.
My phone's situation is SM-G9600,
Magisk, EdXposed (obviously I tried the scanner after disabling both by putting magisk in core mode)
Android patch level from 1 September 2019
If this helps- build number: PPR1.180610.011.G9600ZHU5CSI2
I'll be happy to provide any information that might be helpful
The S9 has a common problem where the fingerprint scanner becomes unreliable even if there's a small scratch on it. Could you upload a photo of the back of your phone?
Here are some pictures taken with the phone through a mirror, no scratches on the sensor... Also it works in other situations, like anything that has somthing to do with fingerprint other then the screen lock.
I checked the the logs and I have some strange things there, for some reason the device is turning the fingerprint scanner off as if I don't have any registered prints... I also asked a friend to send me his logs, and the look like what one would expect, I'll attach the screenshots of both logs

I am facing problem. The screen wakes up. Pin number gets entered automatically.
once unlocked it doesn't take screen input correctly.
After restart I am facing the same problem.
I am not able to use the phone. Please help.
Thanks in advance.
Wipe everything and reinstall from scratch, looks like someone cracked your system.

it this the only option ?
can I search for what is wrong ?
Have you actually watched it turn off and unlock? I just posted in another thread how this phone is very sensitive to butt-dialing in my pockets. This shouldn't enter your pin, but there is built in software to bypass the lock on the device with trusted bluetooth and nfc tags. I reduced the problem significantly by 1) putting the phone in my pocket screen out 2) disabling the trusted unlock for blutooth devices, 3) added a pin. Now I occasionally pull out the phone to find it on the emergency dialing screen and very rarely anymore in airplane mode
So, get this - lately my iris scanner unlocked the phone only after two successful scans. This is how it goes down:
- press power button to wake up device
- swipe up to use the iris scanner
- scan eyes - PASS
- The device remains LOCKED and a message appears on top - "Tap to use the iris"
- I tap that message, the iris scanning procedure begins again
- scan eyes - PASS - UNLOCK!
It bothered me so bad for the past few days, I wanted to do a hard reset to see if it was a glitch with the rom, but I had the great idea to revert to stock density (whichever that was) with "wm density reset" in adb shell. Then, BOOM!! It worked with only one try! How can that be? I started playing with densities and the conclusion is that the scanner works with only one attempt if you use the stock density. If any other density value is used, you have to scan your eyes twice (with that tap of the message in between) which makes it sooooooo annoying!
The phone is not rooted, I don't use any exchange/lock widgets, etc that would enforce other security policies.
Anyone can confirm this is happening with other models as well? if not, maybe it's only my setup or some apps I have or just a bad rom and a reset would clear it.
BTW.. I hate the pin enforcement while using 3rd party lock apps.. as far as I know there's no alternative, right? Tried Good lock but 1) I don't like it a bit! and 2) it still requires pin while using nova gestures to lock... so....
Anyway.. lemme know on your thoughts on this situation.
Hi all,
i just flashed LOS on my phone. On first boot, I was able to save 4 fingerprints without any problems, and I can use those fingers to unlock the phone, so the fingerprint reader itself works. However, if I try to add more fingerprints in the settings, I get to the screen where it prompts me to put my finger on the sensor, but when I do, nothing happens. No vibration, no messages on screen, like it doesn't register the finger at all. Tried several fingers, rebooting the phone, with/without charger connected, nothing works. Any ideas?
Cheers, Ilinsekt
Hi there, Please help me with this weird bug in my MM3's lock function. I haven't read about it anywhere else and I did not update or tweak my rooted system in any way so I'm at a loss as to what caused this probleman d how to fix it.
I am no longer able to employ a simple numerical or pattern screen lock. I go to settings, choose and then confirm the number or pattern, and hit accept -- at which point it asks me for a fingerprint (which I do not want to add) and when I hit cancel, the phone remains unlocked. If I hit add a fingerprint and refuse to present my finger, the phone also remains unlocked. This is so freaking weird!
(MM3 rooted but on stock Android 9 PKQ1.181007.001 -- Miui Global 11.0.6 Stable)
Honestly, I wouldn't give a damn as I never use a screen lock except I am in fact forced to use it every few weeks or whenever I want to review my Brave browser passwords. It forces me to set a lock screen in order to see them. So if there's a workaround just to see passwords, that would do me fine.
Because the basic number and pattern locks aren't functioning properly, I wouldn't even consider adding a fingerprint (and in fact, I have never done so. I have a probably irrational distrust of fingerprint, voice and retina security ... plus I live alone so such measures aren't necessary)
Can anyone give me any clues as to what could be causing this and how to fix it or get around it? Or even if there is a way to see my Brave passwords without employing a lock?
Theoretically, I could try temporarily installing a fingerprint lock which I could then remove after reviewing my Brave passwords. But I have an irrational dislike of fingerprint, voice and retina locks and never use that stuff. Moreover, given the basic number and gesture locks aren't functioning properly, the last thing I want to do is try a fingerprint.
Anyone notice it turns the screen off? I think the proximity sensor thinks your face is going against the screen and the display turns off but it's really annoying when your trying to access things from the notifications.
Hello my friend!
I have the same phone as you, and I'm sorry but I'm not having any problems the likes of which you describe.
May I suggest the following?
1. Restart phone in safe mode (now this will vary based on your Carrier: on my unlocked Google issued phone, I press Power and Vol UP at same time; Verizon is Power and Vol down, others may be different: Then on the menu that pops up, press and hold Reset and it'll ask you if you want to restart in safe mode, hit yes, then restart)(SafeMode will display on screen). Then call someone and try to recreate the "black screen, can't pull down notification window". If you can pull it down (as I suspect you will be able) then it's an app problem you've got (not a hardware or system issue)
2. Try going to Settings: Apps: Special App Access (way at the bottom of the screen) and then try finding either Display Over Apps applications or Picture-in-Picture apps or other groups that may interfere with your Phone app. I bet you'll find that there's an app or utility you've installed that is conflicting with your screen.
Let me/us know how it goes!

Yeah, every phone does this if you have your finger over the sensor. Find a better spot to drag down.
