Can I flash Lineage OS on my ATT Note 10+? - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Questions & Answers

Hello everyone,
It's been awhile since I've been on Android and now that I'm back it doesn't really seem to me like there's any use of flashing roms now as most phones are useable. The only reason I can see is debloat with or w/o root. Anywho, my question I'm trying to ask is am I able to flash Lineasge OS on my Note 10+ N975U? I tried looking for my answer but all I run across is people requesting to flash ATT firmware for Volt LTE to work and etc.
Thanks!

In order to flash a custom rom you need to be able to unlock the bootloader. Same applies with rooting the device or flashing a custom recovery.
Since we can not flash a custom recovery, root the device or unlock the bootloader then your answer is no.

[Q] Rooting GN

Greetings XDA,
Ive recently got me a GN (yakju) (couldn't wait for N4) and wait to get updated to 4.2. Now i run 4.2 and i want to unlock its boot loader & root it.
Not yet interested of having new roms on it, im cool with its stock android BUT i need to get full control of my device and not being restricted on apps that don't need root.
In case you want to ask me WHY i just didn't follow any of the guides for rooting nexuses in the forum, the answer is because im not sure which is the best/easiest/newest/safest
Im not very familiar with such staff i want to make is as simple as it gets and avoid breaking my phone (if thats even possible).
So please can you assist me to take this first android steps ?
Thanks in advance
safest and easiest.

Hi, welcome to the GNex and the possibilities with it. I have had my GNex since Jan 2012 and it was rooted 2 weeks later. I'm sure if you search in XDA you find lots of help on rooting. However I started out with the www.galaxynexusforum.com forum and followed the unlocking and rooting by Wug.
Assuming you have a verizon GNex here is what you should follow
Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit v1.6.0 [Updated 11/26/12]
It is a nice tool installed on a windows pc or laptop and I have used it to do my GNex and also another one from a friend about 6 month after mine.
Works great and i think if you follow these thread you are rooted in no time.
Good luck
I have the GSM nexus.
Ok its unlocked now, preparing to root.
I just got 1 more final question, considering i will not flash any other rom or such, with my device ONLY unlocked & rooted, will i be able to get OTA updates from now on or i will have to flash myself ? (also do i need Custom Recovery ? what does it do ? )

You dont need a tool to unlock...you just need adb and fastboot.
Ensure ADB Debugging is enabled.
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
At this point you can push a custom recovery to your phone - I think there are recoveries now that support 4.2.
After flashing the custom recovery, boot into it and flash your superuser.zip
Lol...thats it.
I think you can still get OTA's but you will lose root. I suppose if the OTA was that important, you can relock the device (you will lose data) and then OTA up to the newest version and unlock again.
If you have a GSM device you are lucky, because the factory images are pretty plentiful. On Verizon CDMA we only have 4.1.1 (and because of this I only use 4.1.1 stock).
I had to relock and unroot on Tuesday because of a SIM card issue - didnt want Verizon knowing it was rooted. Came home and unlocked and rerooted all over again. Took about 10 minutes total.
After OTA 4.2.1 root is lost. Do i need to repeat the process to re-root ?

[Q] Rooting and Unrooting without FLASHING ?

Hello,
I own a N5110 (Wifi) version of the Galaxy NOTE 8.0
The warranty is void since the first day... So I don't have a problem with rooting
I saw this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpMY1xqXBhU
But I've read the comments, ppl have problems!!
And I'm not sure if it works with N5110 or for N5100 variant only!
Another Q:
Will the UNROOTING Process be easy, or it'll require flashing?
Won't I receive updates from SAMSUNG while being rooted (Without custom ROM) ??

For the first question, I am not sure never rooted with that.
For the second question you do need to flash the stock. Usually people just do that to hide that it has been rooted. If it is for that purpose that you are asking, and you have flashed roms, I recommend using Triangle Away, because that erases the counter of how many ROMs you have installed.
If you are at the stock you will receive updates, and if you do the update you will lose root. I have done that in the past with my Droid Bionic. I do not recommend it though because it lagged the hell out of my phone

Well, what's the point in installing the STOCK ROM if I wanted to UNROOT in my case?? (I mean I've no warranty anyway)
Can I just unroot without flashing?
And Yes I know about Triangle Away, I've read about it recently.
For the first question>> what do you recommend for rooting NOTE 8.0 N5110 ?
Thanks

As far as I know(being doing this for 3 years) There is no way to unroot without flashing the Stock Rom. The only way to flash the stock is using odin.
Honestly I do not know the best easy way to do it. All depends on the version you are at. I was on the updated version(not sure the build number). That framework apk didn't work with the version I had. The way I rooted was by first unlocking, then installed the TWRP through odin, then flashed a zip that rooted my phone. I do not recall any of the links. For the files, I lost them all because I just got a new computer and I was dumb enough to not do the back up on the other computer. Also I dont remember if there was steps in between, so I dont recommend following what I mentioned .
the way that I did is very similar to this one:

You can just install a nandroid stock rom for your device which is non rooted...

Rooting & Rom'ing

Okay, I think I know the answer to this question, so forgive me. Just want to be sure before I go blow $500.
For the Nexus devices, regardless of the carrier, we'll be able to root them and ROM them as well as install new Kernel's because the bootloaders will be unlocked?
If that's correct please say so. If it's only partially correct, please explain it all to me.
Disgruntled Verizon User with a S6 Edge
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!
Yes, its easy as pie.
nexuses are always devs favorites...
@mrbigdrawsz As a fellow Verizon user, I know exactly were your coming from. And yes since this is a nexus device coming directly from Google and not being sold or touched by Verizon, it will be good to go for all your rooting, ROM'ing, Bootloader unlocking, and custom kernel needs.
Yes! Though I am not sure about the Pixel C. I am wondering if Google giving products the Pixel name means they lock them down? Sorry, little off topic.
I'm only curious how/if Google has the fingerprint security locked down when it comes to root

Thank the sweet, tiny, infant squishy baby Jesus! I have yet to own a nexus phone (fed up with my GS5) and am about to pre order the 5X. I miss getting to try out different roms and such, so i'm really pumped about the 5X. the 6P is just too big of a phone for me i think.
Forgive me if this has been covered elsewhere, is there any word on xposed for android M?

They are still working out the bugs on getting it to run on 5.x completely as they want and those devs on the Xposed team do a phenomenal job. Support for 6.0 marshmallow will eventually come but it will be a little bit yet.
If I unlock bootload, will I have problem with OTA?

If you just unlock the bootloader you will be fine for OTA's, if you root or then install a custom recovery then you'll have to apply the OTA updates a different way then usual.
Thanks, I will just do that, unlocking bootloader. I really missed OTA as my current N5 is rooted.

Will rooting affect OTA? or will OTA just update and revert the device back to a non rooted state?

In my experience, installing an OTA over a rooted phone would just kill root and you'd have to root it again, however, installing a custom ROM, the developer usually kills OTA so that all the custom stuff doesn't get jacked up.

Rooting will effect the built in method of OTA updates. This is not a problem though. 99% of the time you will have access to the updated via the nexus factory image site before you receive notification of an OTA update on your device. Download the update and extract the boot, bootloader, radio, and system images. Flash via fastboot in bootloader mode and you will update your device without losing data/settings. I believe that you can flash img files with recent TWRP builds also.
To root after update just reboot to TWRP recovery and reboot. You will be prompted to install root before system reboots.
May seem a little overwhelming if its your first nexus device but a lot easier than updating a non nexus rooted Android device.
For more info check out any one of the recent nexus routing guides sticky threads
I know many people rooted etc their Nexus 5s using the Wugfresh Nexus Root ToolKit. Undoubtably a version will be introduced for the 5X,
If you root your device then flash a custom rom, you will be notified of the update via OTA or otherwise (eg Pushbullet) for that specific rom that you have flashed.

Why use a Toolkit to root? Just using ADB and Fastboot is better/easier since you can actually see what is happening during the process. Using a toolkit removes that element and if it hangs you don't where in the process it failed on.

Yes thats true, but I haven't heard of many people who have had problems with Wugfresh and it is a popular method. Everyone is different
I always rooted my Nexus (N4, N5 & N7), but I am not going to root my new upcoming Nexus 5X. Why? It just too much to flash/root since Google will release monthly security updates. Yes, I did use "fastboot flash xxx xxx.img" method. However, I will unlock the bootloader in case I change my mind in the future. With unlocked bootloader, I can always fix phone via flash factory images.

Are All Samsung Devices "Bootloader Unlockable"

as per he title "Are All Samsung Devices "Bootloader Unlockable""?... I know (i think) that samsung devices dont really have a bootloader in the sense that htc and motorola devices do, but this is my first samsung device so im trying to understand how it works based on terms im familiar with.
so in the sense that htc/motorla needs to have an unlocked bootloader to flash custom images, are all samsung devices "unlocked" once you flash with cf-autoroot? from my understamding, cf works on all samsung devices, right? In addition to that, is cf-autorooting necessary if one is goin to flash custom recovery anyway?

AutoRoot is not required for a custom recovery
If the device is unlocked, a custom recovery can be flashed through Odin prior rooting the device. I unfortunately can not help you on whether or not all devices are shipped with unlocked bootloaders. I know the T-Mobile and Wifi variants are.

Thanks, but unfortunately i still dont understand. I flashed cf-autoroot and then flashed custom recovery, but your saying that my device may still be locked? So if i flash stock kitkat firmware via odin and then take the lollipop ota when it comes then there is a chamce i wont be able flash custom recovery again?

That is not what I am stating. If you were able to obtain a custom recovery - your bootloader is unlocked.
You are rooted and modified though, you are no longer able to recieve OTA updates. The only way to flash the update now would be through Odin, or returning your device back to factory specs. As of yet, they did not lock the bootloader with the 5.1.1 update. You will be able to root and obtain custom recovery again with 5.1.1 as you did with Kit Kat. The difference is, lollipop requires a custom non SE enforcing kernel usually.

Thank you! Everything makes more sense now that i know my device was unlocked.. i am so used to locked down devices i assumed that mine was and so i got confused. one last thing , is the download mode screen on samsung devices equivelamt to the bootloader screen on a moto device?
No! Not all Samsung's are unlockable! P605v is not. Any Verizon Samsung and/or AT&T phones are not unlockable

Thank you, I am pretty sure I understand the format now. The thing that was throwing me off the most was CF-Autoroot which for some reason I was thinking performed a bootloader unlock. Idk why because I know the difference between root and unlock. I think i was thrown off by one of the posts I read on the autoroot thread.
One final thing I am trying to clear up as per my last post "is the download mode screen on samsung devices equivelamt to the bootloader screen on a moto device? "
I don't know. I have never owned a moto device.

for anyone else reading this, according to king root's website "Download Mode is essentially the same as Bootloader Mode."

Confirming what is possible w/ a sm-g9601U

Been trying to follow up on the latest with this particular model and just want to verify my understanding:
I CANNOT flash a recovery or custom rom to this phone as the US bootloaders are locked (there may be some ways but it still doesn't yield full flashing/capabilities)
I CAN still root this phone
I CAN still de-google & debloat the phone through root access
I realize these are not all model particular and more root basics so the first is the most important question and the rest I am validating my understanding as it's been a while since I've daily drove any rooted device let alone one custom flashed. I think the s2 was my last w/ Cyanogen lol
Thanks to all!

You cannot flash a custom recovery but you can flash a GSI (which sort of counts as a ROM), the other two are correct. And yes, flashing a GSI will have tons of bugs so be aware of that.
