no e-mail notifications of posts - About xda-developers.com

I've stopped getting e-mail notifications of new posts to subscribed threads.
I was getting lots of notifications. I thought too many. It turned out a few threads were set to "Instant". I changed everything to "Daily". Now I don't get any notifications. When I manually visit one thread, I see lots of activity, about which I was not notified.
I do have a tendency to log in, select "keep me logged in" (if there is such an option), and not log out. I close the tab most of the time. On my desktop machine, I close the browser and shut down the computer. Does the XDA server consider me to be logged in, and therefore aware of all posting activity? (So it never generates a Daily notification?)
I'm setting this thread to "Instant".

Odd. New mail indicated. Can't see it.

I had 2 new mails in my Gmail. I read one, and couldn't see the other one, even though while I am in the vanilla Gmail app it still says 1 new mail at the top of my inbox. Ordinarily I would have just assumed a glitch and moved on.
Except right now I'm sitting in front of my computer and logged on via my computer. Sure enough, I do have a new mail that I still haven't read. I go back to my phone and the notification bar isn't showing any new mail but inside the Gmail app it shows one unread email. Though the view shows everything greyed out and the new mail which came today is not visible.
No refresh, exiting and re-entering or moving around the screen can fix it. I wish I could keep it like this to test what is going on, but I need to read and respond to the mail.
This is a strange one.
Same problem
I hadn't yet worked out the details, but I am almost certain that I've had the same problem. I certainly seem to see nothing new, even although the app says 1 unread.
Looks a bit like a sync error with the cloud. Anyone else got any thoughts?
[EDIT]
I just looked at my Desire and it told me I had 8 unread messages. Opening GMail it said the same in the title bar but only showed 6.
I opened GMail on my Mac and sure enough, I had 8 messages; there was nothing obviously different with the 2 missing ones.
I used Search on my phone to look for the 'missing' messages and to my surprise, they came up! So they are there on the phone, but not showing in the list? So my idea about a sync error is not so good!

Are the extra emails in the inbox, or do you have a rule which applies a label to them and moves them out of the inbox?
Good suggestion.
I know in my case (I just checked) it wasn't labelled and wasn't due to skip the inbox.
I think I may have had this once before and it is rare. But it is strange.

In my experience it happens sometimes but I have solved opening from the web browser Gmail, then you'll find the unread email. Once the unread email is opened, the notification will disappear. But maybe this is a different situation. I hope this can help you.

Yes, this happens from time to time. It's not a desire thing, it used to happen on my G1. I think it's normally a mail within a threaded mail that does it. Annoying but logging into the gmail website usually reveals the answer.
I had the exact same thing happen, not sure why it does it BUT i found the emails...
So SOLUTION/LOCATION of hidden emails are... in email app press menu, goto view labels and hit All Mail, this shows up the messages that didnt show up in the Inbox...
Hope this helps

facebook for android app | push notifications "fixed"

Hi all,
Sorry if this is old news - but its new to me!
Whilst doing some random googling i stumbled accross another forum where a chap had posted a "fix" he had found regarding the lack of push facebook notifications with the official face book app.
Up untill now it has been the one feature for me that has really let android and my phone down.
I am not sure of the rules on posting link to other forums so I will not do that, though I will run throught the basics below.
This worked for me as well as many others on the other forum. Notifications are instant and I have the polling set to never in the FB app.
You need either a blackberry phone, or to download a blackberry phone simulator to make this work.
1) log out of the FB app on your phone
2)from home screen goto settings, applications, manage applications, facebook and clear data and cache
3)log into your facebook account on a blackberry phone and enable notifications on it. Then log out
4) log into facebook on your PC, goto Account settings (click on down arrow next to "home")
5) click on "notifications on the left hand side"
6) scroll down towards bottom of page and click on "other applications" - click on this, you should now have "facebook for blackberry smart phones" - make sure there is a toick next to this
7) log back into the FB app on your galaxy
8) go into setup, uncheck notifications, then recheck notifications
9) set refresh interval to never
10) that should be it
This honestly works 100% for me and other on the other forum. The notifications are instant and it even shows different icon in your notification bar for different types of post (ie wall post or message)
I am running CM7.1 and FB 1.7.2
This seems to work on a wide range of handsets/android platforms.
I dont know how this works. One suggestion is the permission/software the blackberry enables on the FB server is generic for mobile devices and that it is somehow "mising" from the FB app,
All i know is it works for me,
I take no credit or responsibility for this,
I hope this helps somepeople out as it was driving me nuts!
again my thanks to the original poster on the other forum
regards,
anthony
off topic but, i never installed the app because it requires practically every permission in existence, really don't trust it, knowing facebook's privacy issues
fair enough,
but the one thing that has always ruined its usability is the lack (or poor at best) notifications.
untill now anyway (for me at least)
regards
This worked for me for a while. However, I've stopped getting notifications again
forget the original facebook app, use friendcaster

I found friend caster just as bad to be honest,
is facebook really that hard to write a good app for ?

Did it stop working after an update for FB?
Try this login to your FB account and go to "Account Settings". On the left hand side click "Notifications". Scroll down and you should see one near the bottom that says, "Other Applications". Click that and in there you should see "Facebook for BlackBerry® smartphones" If there is a check mark in the box, then un-check and hit save. Then re-check the box and hit save again. You're done and the notifications will start working again. If there is no check mark then add it and click save. Viola FB notifications should be working again.

[Q] Google Talk Not updating?

When I had the Razr before the Nexus, the Google Talk kept constantly updated in real time. With the Nexus, conversations would stop updating as soon as I exit the Google Talk screen, and they would only update again when someone responds to me, not even when I message them.
I've looked under google talk settings, no dice
I've looked under the nexus settings, can't find anything
Can someone help me out here?
I'm also new to phones, but I use Gtalk more than any other app, was wondering if we can make a widget for it?
I did in fact find a homebrew widget for Google Talk, but it didn't refresh in real time either and I didn't find it very useful otherwise.
Nowadays I just keep my screen on and open on Google Talk, but that sucks up batteries and I'd just rather learn how to get Google Talk to stay connected

Google Talk is my main means of communication it seems so I have played with it a lot. Here are my observations.
1. To keep it "up" all the time in the Talk App hit the menu button (three dots now) >settings>uncheck automatic away status. Also make sure your phone has automatic syncing turned on for your gmail account: Setting>Accounts and Sync>ON (for your chat gmail address anyway). Additionally make sure your mobile data is turned on if you are ever off wifi: Settings>More>Mobile networks>Data Enabled (checked to turn on)
2. You can have up to 6 devices linked to your talk account at once, after that they just stop working.
3. When you receive a IM it appears on both your phone and your gmail account. If you start typing on the gmail account (or G+) it hijacks the whole session and you phone no longer gets the notifications, but the conversation still shows up on the chat window on the phone. When you are done with the IM session make sure you close the window on gmail (or G+) and send one last message from your phone or tablet to take the session back over, if you don't your phone will not receive future chat notifications. You can also just log out of your gmail/G+ session and it will automatically return everything to your phone/tablet but who ever does that?
4. To figure out how it all worked and tinker with it I use both of my gmail accounts and chat back and forth with them. You can do it from separate browsers or just open an incognito window in Chrome and log into your other gmail account. I would recommend this so you can see all of this stuff in practice.
Good Luck, hope this helps.

First of all, thank you for the detailed response, it's the most I've received so far and I thank you for your effort. On that note, I've played with all 3 of these settings before and they've been right for a few weeks now.

I have my computer and this phone linked to the talk account, that's it.
And here's where it differs from your experiences I think, with my RAZR, the phone DID in fact keep up to date with whatever conversation happened on my computer. Weird thing with the Nexus is, it just ... completely stops working, and doesn't update when I have a conversation online, that's the weirdest part, because when I use the Phone gchat again, a flood of updates stream in, and that takes a lot of time... and it doesn't even get it all.
Funny story, I had a fight with my gf and she tried to use a piece of gchat conversation on my phone as defense... and she couldn't find it

I'm doing almost the exact same setup with my SGSII. I go back and forth between Talk on the phone, the Talk app on my PC, and super rarely on the Xoom.
For me, when I'm using the phone, the PC app does NOT get updated. It only stores what I do with it. The phone app however gets EVERYTHING. If I'm talking on the PC, when I pick the phone up and check the conversation, its perfectly up to date.
I'm posting here, because I've got the GN ordered, and of course will be using Talk on it alot.
On another note, have you tried an aftermarket app for IM's? Maybe it will work better? After looking around, and reading some reviews I grabbed IMO chat off the market, but I haven't tried it yet....

Persistent Annoying Email Notifications

I'm not sure if anyone else has been dealing with this, but the Stock Email App seems to be engineered to make it's users going insane. Let me explain:
I have two email accounts connected to my phone. A school (.edu) email, and a personal Windows Live account for everything else. Both are set to Push notifications. When I receive a new email, I'm notified as extremely quickly, and it works as it should. 90% of the time it's an a newsletter from my school or an email from Newegg or something so I usually just swipe the notification away, and go about my day. Here's the problem. After swiping away the notification, I'll constantly be reminded about this "new" email every so often. Even though I technically haven't read it, I found it weird that I have the notifications set to PUSH and it seems to want to keep annoying me until I give in and just open the email app and delete it.
This happens quite often and to make things worse, I'll go in and delete 5-6 emails at the end of the week and close the app. Minutes later, I'll receive an email for 5-6 "new" emails. I'll go take a look, and it's older emails that I've definitely read in the past and wanted to keep in my inbox, starting the cycle over and causing me to check the tiny boxes on the side and mark them as read, only to have this happen again later in the week. I thought the point of a Push notification was that I'd be notified in near-realtime. It does so quite impressively, but then it seems to set some flag where it just pesters the crap out of me every hour or so (or when I receive another new email) until I give in..
Is there a way I can stop this? I'd rather not download a third party app if I don't have to. I'm not a heavy email user. I mainly keep the notifications on to notify me of shipping updates, payment confirmations and class cancellations from my professors. There's nothing worse than waking up at 8:30 and stumbling into an empty lecture hall, so the notifications are pretty important.
Thanks in advance,
Well that's the default behaviour of the email app, you will be notified for new mails on each sync interval you have set.
Just open the notification & read the mail to avoid getting repeated notifications.

[Bug] Constant log-outs

This has gotten to the point where I need to bring it up, apparently.
What the heck is going on with the constant partial log-in situation?
I.E. everytime I refresh the page or navigate to a new one I may or may not be logged in.
It gets quite obnoxious, especially on mobile, when you're looking for a thread you've viewed/read/posted-in/whatever and you're logged out...refresh refresh refresh...logged in. Find one thread. Logged out once you click. Back to another forum to find another thread...logged in, and then back out.
This has been going on on all 4 of my Android devices, my PC (chrome/firefox) etc for a few months now.
Yes, it's surely an issue
But clicking on any user's profile logs me in again, so, whenever I come to XDA, I usually come to my Device's Forum and find myself logged out, I click on first user profile I see, of moderator efrant
But yes, it's pretty annoying but I think it should be in Requests/Recommendations threads.

The 2 things that you'll need to check to remain logged in is to:
1) Ensure cookies are enabled. Depending on your browser, you could have a setting such as "Clear cookies when closing browser" and if that is the case you would be logged out all the time. If running Chrome, this setting would be effective across multiple devices.
2) Check the "Remember me" box when logging in. If you check this, XDA will set a cookie which will keep you logged in.
One other thing to remember. If you view a page one and your browser caches it, if you navigate back to it you could get the old page locally which will show you as logged out. When you hit "Refresh" this then hits the server again which will show you as logged in.
If you are browsing somewhere where there is a proxy (either on your local machine or on your network) this could also be caching pages which could show you as logged out when you are really logged in.

None of the above apply for me unfortunately.
Cookies enabled, and again, this is multiple devices/browers/OS's.

This is very hard to troubleshoot as I'm not experiencing this problem. How familiar are you with inspecting headers and that sort of thing?
