Got the phone few days ago. Most of the time, fingerprint works on first or second attempts. But now and then it takes 4-5 attempts. and on two occasions i had to try 8-9 times to get it to work. Is it a problem only i am facing or its a common problem? i already updated phone after buying. should i get it replaced or it will be ok with next update
Thanks.
common problem i think. not as fast as the previous one on N9
Well, it is not widespread or "common", some users complain about this, but this issue has been discussed at lenght since the first days of this device, do a search, you will find some useful tips, My sensor is very fast and accurate, I think it depends on several factors, temp, moisture, the way you registered the fingers, screen protectors, etc
Also, register the same finger multiple times... I believe you can add 5 fingerprints....
I understand what you are talking about. I was so frustrated with the phone when I first got it. I deleted all my finger prints and then set them up again. Make sure to slowly follow the fingerprint instructions when adding. I added multiple fingers and some more than once. I have not had any issues since. I have also read some people say remove the factory screen protector. I still have mine on with no issues. Good luck!

did you have the same issue as mine? like u had to make several attempts and sometimes even 8-9 times to make it work?
only time I've had problems with mine is when my hands have been extremely dry, putting slight moisture on my finger can make it scan better, but for the most part it works perfect unless I'm somewhere hot and dry.
I have similar issues when I have a screen protector on the phone. Sometimes I have to press multiple times, sometimes I have to press harder. Finally going without anything on the screen and the sensor works like a charm.
Screen touch sensitivity.
On my Note 10+ 5G (SM-N976U) I have a setting on the Display page (scroll down near the bottom) that increases touch sensitivity specifically for use with screen protectors. The screen itself is Gorilla Glass 6, which is twice as strong as Gorilla Glass 5, so, if you are the careful sort, you can get by without a glass protector. Even with an extra curved glass protector, with touch sensitivity turned up, I can use light gloves & still the capacitance works fine.
Touch sensitivity has nothing to do with the fingerprint sensor.
Mine works perfect with screen protector. Sure if you put new screen peotector, it takes time to recognise finger. But when protector sits perfect than no prob at all.

Mine drives me mad , adding finger prints mostly does not work , i cant record my thumb print at all , was wondering if the sensor is not correct under the screen ,its always hit or miss on my phone , with my wifes note 10 there are no problems

I'm missing the iris scanner from the note 9.

the sensor works well as long as you don't have dry hands, lick your finger/thumb and it will work every time, sad but true. it's something I realise after it working flawlessly while drinking in a beer garden with condensed glasses but the rest of the time it was hit and miss. seems if your skin is too dry it doesn't read well, but add a bit moisture and it works perfectly. guess it has something to do with the technology in the new sensor using vibration instead of imaging.

Yes, lick your finger everytime you want it to work in the midst of a pandemic that seems to be spread by the virus getting transmitted from the hands to the face everytime you touch it...
You can also try this - https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-10+/themes/fingerprint-speed-hack-t4071893
No need to lick fingers now...
Excellent advice from ultramag69, this mostly solved my problem, but I'm not happy with Samsung, This problem should not happen on such an expensive device from a famous brand

The other advice I've found is to set up multiple finger prints with the same finger (you can usually set 5 fingerprints). This will improve the hit rate of the fingerprint sensor...

If you mean something like a small change on screen brightness ,you can try to set brightness to full. That seems to worked for me.

It might be a stupid suggestion, but when you hold your finger on the screen for more than 2-3 seconds, don't you start to mark the text? hence the screen picks up the minute shaking of your finger? If you move your finger without releasing the screen when it shakes I believe you start to mark text for copy/paste??
I might have misunderstood the problem entirely, so please be gentle
+1.
Got the same problem and looking for a solution.
The touch screen is really really bad i have a lot of problems with the touch screen. I don't know if it's software or hardware problem. SE doesn't say anything about this.
It's really annoying when playing games or typing really fast. it doesn't track your finger properly.
This has to take media attention so SE will be forced talk about it. i love that they are trying to be dev friendly at all. but this issue isn't making me happy.
I always do this when I browsing a long text and wanted to scroll slowly. The shaking problem always make me dizzy.
I also encounter problem with typing too.
probably a touch screen driver issue... it thinks your moving your finger up and down slightly when really it's stationary. just take your finger off of the screen when you want to read something. there's no need to have to keep your finger there anyways

It's not about putting your finger on the screen. there are serious problems with the touch screen. i made a youtube vids to show the problem
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwr0rFzCU4k
SE has to give answers about the problems i'm getting tired of the screen issues.
Try superpaint lite, it seems to be program's fault not the screen
I replied @ youtube and also putting it here. I tried it but it doesn't recognize if finger points switch to fast.
This also happens with all other apps and games like SE Launcher, Angry birds, taptap revolutions, GB keyboard ....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034319 here is also a thread
Just upgraded the firmware from SE and claimed to fix some bugs and improve stability. Nothing change for the touch screen issue. Don't know whether Sony didn't notice the problem or it's just an unfixable hardware defect.

The problem with touch screen depends on how you touch as well...
If you touch by your thumb with full finger touch, the sharking will occur, the more area that your finger attach to the screen mean more sharking
now change your habit, touch the screen with only by the edge of your finger or with your smaller finger the screen will hold stable.
Their a limit area of your finger attach to the screen so that the screen will keep stable, over that limit area the screen will sharking.

Zoom in?
I got a lot of this when browsing too. Esp. with opera, if I need to open it in new tab, I need a long press on link. And often if the icon/text isn't bigger than my finger touch size, the screen will shake.
Unfortunately, the best way I found is to zoom in.
hmmmm...
It's so sad that we need to change our behavior to coop with a device that supposed to make our life easier.
I find that all the embeded apps provided by SE do not have the shaking problem. I guess SE do know about the issue so they made some tweat on them.
My finger tips are quite larger (as I play bowling).

Its the stupid, thick, shatter proof film thats making touch functions go crazy. Peel that crap off your screen and the device will work as intended.
I had the same issue with my x10, because the film does not allow for a good connection between your finger and the screen, the screen detects multiple touches.
I removed the film (Thats does not protect against scratches and is actually more prone to them) and the screen was absolutely PERFECT.
Does HTC need a shatter proof film on their Mineral Glass? NO so neither does the Arc, just remove that junk and put a good screen protector on it.

Probably don't need a screen protector. It should have gorilla glass, or good enough not to have one.
Getting a screen protectector makes the screen...not so nice anymore.
i find that the stylus isn't very useful around the corners at all. it might take me 5-6 tries for it to register me pressing the bookmarks button in the upper righthand corner of the browser window but when i use my finger it works everytime. i don't have issues clicking on other links in the middle of the screen with the stylus but the browser icon is pretty damn important.
FYI... Corning's Gorilla Glass still scratches.

VERY true, get just a little dirt and you screwed... My Sensation 4G has a concave screen which means when i place it face down, the screen isn't in contact with the surface, but not true for my Nexus 7 which has a pretty ugly scratch
Forget all the "you need to not press hard" bull****, it's way simpler than that.
Register your finger while holding the phone in one hand, position your fingerprint on the sensor exactly as you would casually, keep registering it that way, from a limited position on a one handed held.
If you do a "proper" registering process of your fingers from artificial positions just because you think it helps the sensor, it won't work, even minimal changes in your finger shape will make it generate different keys that will not match a real life press.
I registered my fingers from positions I would practically use to unlock later on, the success rate is now 100% as long as I don't miss the sensor on dark screen, no matter the pressure or the time you hold your finger on the sensor, it will now work every single time

I tend to agree with you. I registered both right and left thumbs and they both work on command. No 2nd or 3rd attempts yet. Just register the thumbs like you would naturally hold them on the screen(flat).
I also feel like the fingerprint scanner icon is a bit misleading, given the fact that the sensorbis actually above the actual icon

But when I try to casually tap the screen to register fingerprint naturally, it won't register, keeps saying press harder or hold longer
Or register the same finger twice.. That's the better solution

Same, and i registered the finger I'm going to be using most twice. Registered casually and from a natural position. I think mine has failed to unlock maybe 3 times in a week. In this case...keep it simple don't over think it.
Sensor is off
I noticed when the screen is off in dark mode and u take a flashlight on a angle of the screen i noticed the sensor is like a U shape just slighty to the left of the finger print icon, now that i kinda setup my finger print just a tat left og the finger print icon its been 100 procent i also noticed moist fingers work better . i could be wrong about it being a sensor but the U shape i think would be the sensor

New update on firmware.Science for snapdragon. SBA TO SD3. Made a world of difference for me. Can't wait for my replacement Whitestone to get here to see if sensor works any better with tempered glass. This update absolutely made a huge difference. Not slightly, very significant change for me. I register both thumbs twice and I couldn't get it to not unlock every time. 50+ unlocks and maybe 2 failures. I stopped counting at 50.
Will it work on verizon or only unlocked?

I'm waiting on my Whitestone replacement as well. Can you keep us informed on how the sensor works with your new install? I had to pull the last one. It was horrible. I miss my glass...
The problem for me and many people is that when the finger being scanned is dry, scanning won't work (and will be asked to "press harder"). Some people then try to press really hard and it will, forever, say "not match".
People with moisted fingers will not have this problem and will not understand the kind of people I mentioned above. Since I have S10+ for a month, I, kind of, know when the scanning will not work. I will use face scanning instead or if I really want to scan my finger with whatever reason, I just rub my nose with my thumb then it will 100% work (greasy nose does the trick).
I don't know if Samsung can ever fix this since it is not how accurate the reader is.
Dry fingers don't work with the fps even when removing the pre-installed screen protector?
I am debating to remove the screen protector and my main points are:
1. The protection offered by the pre installed screen protector is minimal either way.
2. That the screen colors and usage will become much better.
3. That the fps will work much better even with dry fingers due to the oleophovic coat of the screen.
Has anyone who removed the screen protector tested this?

I removed mine yesterday and it does help a little with the fps. I still don't like the fps though, I would much rather have a Face ID equivalent. Or have the fps on the back.

I had reached out to Whitestone because my first install failed. I had the WSD on my s9+ and went through 5 or 6 in the year (I dropped my phone a lot). So I knew what I was doing, but the first try had a huge bubble. Tried doing the cleaning and reinstall with the backup glue and had a bunch of microscopic bubbles in the top and bottom (guessing I didn't clean it well enough before reinstall). I wasn't sure how to register warrenty wise because technically it worked fine, just was having FPS issues. They ended up replacing without me paying for the shipping which was awesome of them.
Recieved my replacement today, and the install is flawless. One thing to note is on the 10+ the absorb pads hook into the top tray not the bottom (that was a hell of a mess the first time). The original kit didn't come with the pads pre-installed like the replacement kit.
I haven't even gotten the latest OTA yet, and with the WSD glass, it's just as quick and success rate is the same as when I had the pre-installed protector. Might even be faster than my s9+ was...
Hi guys, thought I share a test Ive done and to ask if you can try too
I have a TPU screen protector on my phone and the fp scanner is mostly ok but do get times where i need to try more than once. So i did a test by adding a wet finger in the settings
What ive noticed is now the sensor seems a little quicker when i unlock my phone with the same, dry finger
If you get 5 mins, register a wet finger (make sure its well all the way through the register process) and see if it makes a difference to your unlocking speed.
It may just be me, so it would be good to get some other tests
Cheers
I'll try this, which screen protector do you have? I've been through 3, including the Whitestone one, all garbage
Why can't these protectors be as simple to put on like for iPhones...

I installed a tempered glass and since I had to re-register my prints I tried it your way with a wet finger and it wouldn't register at all. It kept telling me to press harder but no matter how hard I pressed it didn't register. I cleaned off my finger and it worked ? not sure if its because of the tempered glass and not the preinstalled screen protector. My prints were working flawless before by the way but it didn't hurt to try something new and experiment
I had the 4 XL from release until I got the 6 Pro a few weeks ago and all the styluses I have and even my finger will often click an item or link instead of scrolling the page up or down. Never saw this on the 4 XL.
No, I don't have a screen protector.
Yeah, have this too. If I want to go a page back it sometimes goes two steps back and the vibration Motor counts 2 times instead of 1 time. Very bad feeling. So if I'm in a Signal or WhatsApp conversation and I want to go back to main window I land on my desktop. That Happens a lot to me and I can't find an option for this. Nope, no screen protector. I've been pretty lucky and never really scratched my screens. I've tried the hard class and the film type protectors in the past but I'm old enough now. I think I'll just get a new phone if I really scratch it. It's so much nicer using the phone without a case or screen protector. I just use the lens cloth pouch when I put it in my pocket.

I don't know what to tell you guys. It happens a couple times a day. I might be able to go a day without it happening. Maybe the rounded edges are touching my hand at the same time. I'm using my other finger or stylus or something. I don't know. All I know is none of the other phones I had and I've had basically every single Google phone, didn't do this that I can remember.
I'm having the same issue. Very annoyed how often it happen during games. Notice it most play Hill Climb Racing 2. I hope it is just a software issue.
Google support couldn't help. I recognize that I had enabled the dev. options Window animation scale to 0.5 to speed up things. So I disabled the developer options and set everything back to 1.0 . This helped a little bit because of the slow speed of animations. But I recognize the vibration motor often to count 2 times instead of 1. But with slow speed in animations its not so critical. But if you say u don't have it... Just join Gmail and swipe back, 20 times, I think u recognize maybe one or two times that the vibration counts 2 times, you will feel it. Just try it. But with everything on standard you will maybe not see this problem but you will feel it. I hope it's a software thing.
yeah I have the same at times although not that often, it seems to occur when you are clicking on something on the rounded edge, I was clicking on something the other day and it bumped me to home in the browser, and I don't believe I clicked near the home button, zoomed in on the page and then was fine
I see it when just scrolling in news feeds. It will randomly open the link where I totally clicked and dragged. My 4XL never did this and it had a screen protector. It did not work well with a stylus until using the Increase Touch Sensitivity setting. I tried it on the 6 Pro just to see and it did not help.
Same story, the screen is too sensitive although the setting for it is off. It's highlighting the text or hitting the links while scrolling in browser or Amazon or anywhere else. I have hydrogel screen protector installed. Very annoying.

And this.
Even effects typing.. I actually just tried increasing the touch sensitivity and it helps slightly. (I have *no screen protector on my 6P)
