Twrp asking for password - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello everyone
I recently installed magisk and twrp on my redmi note 5 pro whyred. Every time I go to recovery my internal storage is showing as encrypted and twrp asks for a password to decrypt this. I don't have any pin, pattern or fingerprint.
I have already tried password & default_password, default-password.
Please help.
Thanks

You should formatted data before installing ROM that way it would remove MIUI encryption.

It happened to me once but with RedWolf recovery. The fix was simple, changed the version of RWRecovery...

I only changed the version of RedWolf recovery when I had this issue, no formatting was necessary and all was fine!

Still formating is recommended if you have an unlocked bootloader. No need for encryption when the bootloader is unlocked it's useless.

Yes indeed! I already had my bootloader unlocked!

You need modified TWRP 3.0.2-28 to get TWRP working with Beta 8. I had the same issue witrh my installation.
Also you need to make sure to remove your lock screen, then you will be able to use TWRP

I'm using latest modified TWRP 3.0.2-28 + OOS Beta 8. I have a protected lockscreen (fingerprint / pin) and pin is needed to start the device.
I flashed TWRP, wiped everything and changed "DATA" filesystem to "F2FS" and flashed the rom (clean installation)
I have full acces when using TWRP.
No need to force decryption or anything...

It doesn't work though, if you installed dirty and just upgraded from MM. TWRP keeps asking for password and doesn't accept it, even if I change to password (else using PIN) in the system.

I came from OOS 3.2.8 running already with F2FS and did a dirty flash to the Nougat Beta.
All with the -1.28 TWRP and have no issues going into TWRP and it accepts my pin.

This is the way I went, just yet being on ext4. Could it be a difference, if you flash or if you just boot TWRP? I'm only booting instead of flashing, so I retain my recovery, as I didn't see the new Oxygen recovery for OOS4 in the wild yet.

You probably need an older version for ext4. The last one working on ext4 when I did the switch to f2fs was -1.25 if I remember correctly.
After the switch to f2fs I had to flash 1.28 or the recovery wouldn't accept my pin anymore.

I have done format userdata in fastboot but my phone still shows up as encrypted. Flashed 3.0.2-1.28 and I still get a password screen when booting to recovery. Not really sure what else I can do.

Can't seem to get TWRP to flash correctly and ask for my lock screen pattern?

Hi All
I'm a noob and just learning the ropes. and I goofed up installing the Hexa ROM and recovered into TWRP.
I think I screwed up and wiped the wrong thing or something! :silly:
I can recover into TWRP but all the internal storage files are still encrypted.
TWRP didn't ask for my lock screen pattern and so shows all the files as encrypted. I have tried re-flashing TWRP using Minimal ADB & Fastboot about 5 times but TWRP doesn't ask for the lock screen pattern so everything remains encrypted.
What is the best way to proceed?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

First, stop using Minimal. It doesn't know about all our extra partitions. Get Google's.
https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools.html
Second, you don't flash TWRP with fastboot. You use the TWRP img file and fastboot boot twrp. Then you install TWRP zip after you have booted to it.
So grab the RC1 img file below and then rc2 zip. Copy the zip to the phone then Fastboot boot to twrp, then install the zip you copied.
https://dl.twrp.me/marlin/
So I downloaded SDK Platform Tools and am using it.
I downloaded the RC1 img and the RC2 zip.
I fastbooted twrp.img
The phone reboots but the internal storage is still encrypted so I can't proceed!
I must be doing something wrong.

No, your not. What you describe has happened to a fair number of people. We dont know why. Keep trying, oower off....reboot.
It will decrypt If you boot the twrpRC1.img from fastboot instead of flashing RC1/RC2.

Hello,
Maybe try removing lock screen/boot pattern in settings completely and reboot your device.
Once powered up, reboot to bootloader, boot TWRP img and install TWRP zip.
Reboot to system and setup lock screen/boot pattern again.
Now try rebooting to TWRP and see if it finaly asks for your pattern and properly decrypts your files.
Good luck...

[HELP!] Encrypted folders in TWRP

Hey guys,
I have recently flashed global stable ROM over global beta (oreo) while having lockscreen setup, and also "Preverve force encryption" checked in Magisk while in global beta. This was an accident...
And now, no matter how I format the phone, or flash offiical ROMs from MiTools/fastboot, once after the initial setup of MIUI, the folders shown up in TWRP is random characters.
If i format data partition, then I can access data from TWRP, but once initialized android, then it goes back to random characters.
I have also tried this thread in MIUI forum:
http://en.miui.com/thread-310923-1-1.html
this script is meant to disable encryption but it seems to be very out dated, tried it doesn't work.
Has anyone ran into problems like this before?
Thanks in advance!
Just use the same code as you entered on you lock screen.
For example if your lock pin is '1234' put '1234' in the TWRP when you boot into it.

Now i'm confused,,, i used to be able to see the files in TWRP, but i definitely have not used this version. I wonder if what i used before also supports encryption, or it was that the encryption was not enabled before....
But anyways, this one your link is working. Thanks again!

Data encrypted after miui pie update(9.3.28)

I just updated to global beta 9.3.28 and my twrp is now showing data encrypted and it asks for the password (my lockscreen password doesnt work), internal storage is showing 0 Mb & I'm unable to flash anything. Somehow i rooted my device with magisk patch boot image method and twrp started flasing things, i flashed "no-verity-opt-encrypt-6.0" & its not doing anything as well. So i took the bold step and wiped cache, dalvik, data & internal storage then twrp worked correctly w/o asking for any password but after flashing the rom again(flashed lazyflasher too) and rebooting to twrp gets me to the same problem of data encryption!!!....what am i doing wrong here??...please help
Solution- change recovery to one which supports pie(like to orangefox).
Did you tried to flash another TWRP that supports miui pie?
Try orangefox recovery.

It happened to me.
When redwolf recovery ask you to enter passwords just Cancel it.
Goto wipe. Slide to wipe.
Goto reboot. Reboot recovery.
unfortunately This solution cause my phone need to fatory reset before reboot
The same happened to me, after flashing weekly (thru my redwolf recovery) 9.3.28 my storage has encrypted.
My question is the following,
Do I have possibility of decyripting storage w/o data factory reset ?
and,
Shall I loose my data if I implement the below method explained below web page ?
http://www.androwide.com/2017/08/unable-to-mount-storage-twrp-internal-storage-0mb.html
Or is there any method (with any type recovery) to decrypt storage w/o loosing data in storage ?

The solution is to flash a recovery with support of pie decryption, i dont know about redwolf but orangefox recovery definitely works for me & it will for you as well, just flash it & all your problems will be solved.
I was on RN 5 Pro Oreo with Orange Fox R9.0.1

But when i boot into Orange Fox recovery Data encrypted, asking for password.
It is not accepting screen lock PIN or password.

I don't if I messed up installing orange but, at the beginning it showed:
"
<Heading> Mount
Unmodified System Partition
TWRP can leave your system partition unmodified to make it easier for you to take official updates.
TWRP will be unable to prevent the stock ROM from replacing TWRP and will not offer to root your device.
<in red> Zip Installations or ADB operations may still modify the system partition. </in red>
Swipe to allow modifications
"
I swiped, installed orange zip from my sdcard, then it rebooted to my lock screen instead of rebooting into recovery mode.

My problem solved simply by installing OF 9.0.2 over 9.0.1 . Rooted with latest Magisk, enabled cam2api by editing build props. GCam working good.

[Solved]TWRP doesn't work after official Pie update- decryption password required

I use stock recovery and official miui global rom in my phone along with magisk root. Everytime a new update comes i restore stock images from magisk, then apply the update, then again boot into twrp (just boot), flash the magisk and done. That way i maintain the stock recovery, OS, and root as well.
Yesterday i got the official Pie update from Xiaomi, i restored the stock images from magisk, updated to Pie. But now if i try to boot into twrp to flash magisk, it asks for decryption password. My phone is encrypted, from past one year twrp used to work completely fine after i entered the password (encrypted with lock screen pw) but now it says decryption failed. I have tried everything-
1. Removing the lock screen and encryption altogether.
2. Changing the encryption/lock screen pw to pattern/pin/password
But no luck, it says decryption failed. I'm unable to boot into twrp.
Also one weird thing, if i set pattern encryption pw, it asks for alphanumeric pw in twrp decryption screen. And vice versa. I've tried many twrp versions including the latest one. HELP!
Solved by using OrangeFox Recovery (OrangeFox-R9.0-2-whyred-MIUI-Pie.zip) from https://sourceforge.net/projects/orangefox/files/whyred/
Magisk works along with full encryption with lock screen password
Reboot took me to system reboot

The dots translate into numbers in the following pattern:
1 2 3

Please note that this is what I read somewhere else when searching for my solution to the original problem (Can't decrypt Pie storage using password from Oreo).

Got problem with encryption in TWRP on brand new Mi Max 3 with Pie. I started with twrp-3.2.3-0-nitrogen, which ask about a pass after instalation. In this thread I found so OrangeFox Recovery should solve problem, but - this recovery is in .zip file to flash from recovery, which I did not have... In desperation I flashed twrp-3.3.1-0-nitrogen, and this
works!!
