Desperately trying to love Pixel phone (& failing) - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

I am coming from Samsung S9 (yes, I know, I know bloatware glore). I have tried all big launchers (Lawn Chair. pixel. Nova). On Pixel 3XL.
I can't make the notification numbers to stay? Wth Google. This is v basic functionality I will think EVERYONE will expect in 2020?
Please enlighten me, how to make this work?
Also, Google removed face unlock? I am not big on that but why remove it, once you added the functionality?
Is there a way to make Samsung apps work on Pixel? I will love to get Email and Calendar app (and possibly Reminder)
ps: I don't want to root. It breaks pay system?

No.

@PrinceMS
By "notification numbers" do you mean the badges that show the unread count? If so, Nova Prime should give you that functionality.
I believe face unlock was removed due to security concerns. Who knows, maybe it will make a return after it's been improved.
Using a Samsung app I believe requires some tweaking and root. There's a thread where the question was asked.
There are many people using Gpay with rooted devices. Look here and here.

How do you disable My Magazine

This so called feature is seriously annoying and useless. Pure Samsung garbage bloatware.

Root, freeze.
Freezing magazines creates problems with stock mail app?
Can anyone confirm if freezing My Magazines causes the stock mail app to randomly crash?
It's the case on my Note 3 (don't ask my why, it just is) and I like to use Gmail app for personal and stock email for university emails.
Every time I would try to open stock email from a notification it would crash but work fine when restarted, until the next email that is...

I just tested, the same problem. Email worked fine when opening from drawer or shortcut but crashed from notification.
Is it possible? Disable My Magazine

This mail Crap happens to me also I hate it! Like wtf Samsung, what do those two have to do with each other? Nothing, yet Samsung has managed to screw that up....
Run My Magazine then from settings you can disable the home button from bringing it up which removes the home button delay but can still swipe up from home screen to less intrusively bring it up.
Are we capable of disabling My Magazine without root without ill effect?

Just my musings perhaps Samsung didn't screw it up and wanted to make sure people don't get rid of My Magazine through deliberate linkage. By linking various parts together to have performance it forces users not to tinker to disable commercial software. Then again maybe I am giving Samsung more credit then they deserve. I wanted to get rid of it after I saw its real purpose besides being a nag. So I delinked it from the gesture to bring it up and now I am pretty happy.
Doc
This isn't exactly a fix...but this is how i disabled it.
After installing Apex Launcher and modifying how the home button (set to do nothing on long press) and gestures (swipe up brings out the list of my recently opened apps) work for the home screen, My Magazine won't come up again. I'm not sure if other launchers will function the same way though.
Yea this happens with me to....total crap. One of the first things I noticed was that after I finished freezing all the bloat that my work email started screwing up like this. Didn't take long to figure it out....What the hell Samsung....total bull**** ****ing crap. And the fact that no one seems to be able to figure it out....much worse! I wonder if any devs have successfully removed it....they must have, no? There's got to be a way, this is android guys!

Just had an idea....What about grabbing the apk for the email program off a different device, removing my magazine and the email program from the note, and then throwing the other apk on and trying that out? Maybe?

Font change for Google Pixel XL

Is there a way I can change the default font style for my Google Pixel XL. I've tried looking and could not find the option. The default font is... well.. boring. Also to note, I do not want to ROOT my phone just to change the font and I have tried downloading different FONT apps that did not work. Any help? Thanks!
Any answer to this question? I would love to know as well. I can't read my native language on default font.

As far as I know you can't change the font unless maybe with an app but not sure if you would need root. You could change the font size which may help. Look under Settings, Accessibility, and there is a choice for Font Size.
Hope this helps.

"Launchers are always the answer"
There is an article entitled "How to change fonts on Android" by Team AA that was posted on January 24, 2016. It explains how to change fonts well particularly the section entitled "Launchers are always the answer" I chatted with someone from the Google support team I informed him that my Pixel XL is not rooted and that I was not willing to root it because it would void my warranty. Despite having told him that, I was told I would be able to find a font app in the playstore that would work on my Pizel. That is not the case none of the apps would work without root. The only way I have found to change the font without root access is to use a custom launcher. I hope that helps. Personally, I think the Pixel launcher is better than the 3rd party launchers I have tried so far, so until I find 1 I like I'm stuck with Roboto. I know it was unsafe but I really miss my Note 7. Pixel would be much better if it had Flipfont or something similar so we had options.

I agree and am hoping that they introduce the ability to change fonts in this pixel xl. I also had to turn in my note 7. I loved that phone. I do indeed love this pixel though as well. It has proven to be an excellent product.

I couldn't help but reply to say that rooting absolutely does *not* void your warranty. I've spoken with several Google reps and I got a consistent answer. Even flashing a custom ROM doesn't void your warranty. All they ask is if you return or replace the phone, to put it back to stock Android with it factory reset!

Samsung S Pen Features on Note 2 Custom ROM

I installed Xenon HD based Custom ROM for Nougat 7.1.2 on my Note 2 without thinking about what happens to S-Pen and the apps that it use like S-Note. But I am liking the phone after I installed this.
Hence thought I will check if there is a way I can use S-Pen and the associated apps on this Custom ROM.
Any help or, information would be highly appreciated.
I really liked the S-Note app and would like to use it or, something like it.
for note taking i currently use "Squid - Take Notes & Markup PDFs" it has some inapp purchases but the basic stuff is available for free.
But pretty much any note taking app should have support for the spen, at least the bigger ones (EverNote and such, but i never used them)
Then there are options like SPenCommand and NoteBuddy (not sure if it works on Nougat)
My preferred App for Stylus gestures is GMD SPen Control but sadly it seems that app is no longer maintained and does not work on Nougat

The problem with most of the notes app is that there is no handwriting recognition and hence S-Pen pretty much becomes useless. That is one of the reasons for my displeasure.
I would like to use the features of S-Pen. And there were a lot of my notes in S-Note which is something I haven't been able to recover or, use now.
SPencommand and Notebuddy doesn't seem to be working on Nougat.
SPencommand definitely does, i tried it for a short period but ended up getting a refund because it does not support custom gestures.
Oh i thought you meant just scribbling down some notes, i never used the recognition feature to turn it into actual text.
As far as i know there is no way to run the Samsung apps on AOSP or import data from them.
But i personally never used them, maybe someone else has some ideas.

Yeah, you are right. I tried a few others including SPenCommand. But nothing worked until now. Looks like I have to finally convince myself of letting it go..

Samsung messaging app on Pixel? gear s3 is the reason

Anyway to make this happen? I tried just installing the apk but it didn't work. I would even put a rom on this phone if there was a way to get it to work. I have a gear S3 and I miss having my messages saved on my watch when I had my s8. Hopefully someone knows an answer to this. Thanks.
Not possible. You'd need various framework elements from TouchWiz/Samsung Experience which are not open-source.

Think Textra would work

Stock SMS Widget not available anymore

Can someone please check their Widget list and see if the stock messaging/ SMS widget is there. For some reason mine is missing, i use nova launcher and thought that maybe the issue, but its not there in stock launcher either.
Thanks.
I don't use it but I just tried to set a widget and it doesn't appear in my list of widgets.
What the heck. The widget used to be there for me on my S9. Can someone else confirm if they see it or not also. It makes Bo since why it would be removed. On my work phone galaxy S6. It is working as usual.

Yep gone for me too
Few on the play store you can use
That makes no since why Samsung would remove it. Thanks for checking

Same reason they removed image resizing from the photo editing app, replaced "keep screen off in a dark place such as pocket or bag" with "touch is disabled in a dark place", screen will now happily come on and stay on though... and other dumb changes that make no sense
At a guess for the messages widget, stats probably showed it wasn't used much but who knows with Samsung
anyone get a previous version working? i really miss a widget..

Use a different SMS app that contains a widget?
Android Messages has widgets and is a much better app in my opinion.
i really like to keep my phone minimalist with no extra apps unless i have too.. also it's nice having one that respects the theming engine of the phone.

Then there's no reason to even buy a high end phone especially with Samsung's less than stellar apps. Just my opinion, but like a**holes, everybody has one.

The widget is gone for me also. Happened when I updated the Google Android Messages app on Google play store yesterday. I've tried to uninstall and reinstall the Google SMS app several times which was not stock on my phone, have cleared my phone's cache a from the safe mode screen, and also cannot find the SMS widget for stock messages app or Facebook Messenger.

After toying around on and off all day, I found an older version of the Google Android Messages app that works and has the widget. I do not promote installing apps from unverified sources outside if the Google Play Store as it can be a risk to your device. Here is the application that I found to be working:
