I recently got this phone and things are working fine except I can't add my carriers APN to the phone for mobile data. The only option is greyed out and there is no button to add another. I'm not quite sure what to do.

With your sim in, dial ##3282# then go to apn settings , 3 buttons at the top right, and reset to default. Try a few times in areas with better connection if it doesn't work. It should work the first time though

I've done this but it does not seem to work. I'm using a local carrier from a not very large country so I don't think they have any auto APN settings on their network. When looking it up on their website the only option is to add the APN settings manually which looks to be impossible sadly.

Your only option is to contact Sprint and ask them for a service code. That is the code you need when you click edit on different settings in that menu. Another user had this problem and ended up returning the phone
Same thing for me too. Can anyone please come up with a solution for this. Had the same issue with the leaked firmware too and had to downgrade to Pie to get data back.

I might just end up returning it. I was wondering if root is ever achieved on this phone would there be a way to then freely access the settings?
Bought 5 of these unlocked LG G8 phones for families in Laos and the update basically broke them. Now I can't get help from LG or Sprint. WTF...never again with both of these two companies. What a waste of my time and money, Grrrr.
I have the same problem. Can't edit the APN in Setting to get it to work. But when I go to ##data# and go to APN Setting and try to edit it demands my Service Code which I randomly entered 000000 and it opened for edit !! But most things are un-editable so that did not work for me. I.e I can edit user name, password, authentication, APN NI and PDN Type but I can't edit the APN to change it to my carriers "#777". Any ideas?
P.S. My device is actually sprint locked, but I'm using an unlocking electronic chip to make it work on my carrier
Update
This was brought up on the Sprint forum and a representative states, "We are only responsible for unlocking the device, not getting the APNs to unlock. You can contact the carrier you are trying to activate the device on or contact LG" as shown here. There was another post on the LG forum where an LG representative says to contact Sprint or the other carrier because the problem can only be resolved by the carrier here.
So currently Sprint and LG are passing the blame onto each other. This is sad to hear because this is the only disappointment I have in my purchase so far. Maybe if more of us comment on the issue to both companies we can find out which one is really at fault and get them to issue a fix?
I have the unlocked Sprint variant of this phone on ATT and my APN settings are also locked. My APN settings got messed up after this last update and once during a factory default. I fixed the APN settings for ATT doing the below steps.
Do the ##data# code
Then go to APN
Then on the top right corner of the screen hit the three little dots
Then hit reset to defaults
Next restart the phone
After that mobile data and mms started working. Hope this helps.

I tried deleting all APNs from ##DATA# and now the 3G symbol appears briefly for a second and then disapears every couple of minutes.

check the sprint community forum, there is a moderator that can help you get your service code, once you have this, you can make changes to your apn (I don't think you can add a new APN though) The update screwed up this apn badly, sadly lg and sprint are just passing the blame around

The phones are unlocked, even with service code, you can't add a new apn, you can only edit some parts of the existing ones.

FIX
So I continued searching and there is an adb fix that forces the "Add APN" activity. Enable ADB debugging and then type
Code:
adb shell am start -a android.intent.action.INSERT content://telephony/carriers --ei simId -1
This was discovered by xda member deskjet390 here. I used an app that a member named miji2 on another forum created that does this on device here. I also think I should link the website that I found all this information on as they're the reason for all of this so here.

Am I blind or did they vanish? I go to SETTINGS --> MORE --> MOBILE NETWORKS, and I have 4 options... Data Enabled, Data Roaming, Network Mode, and System Select. Isn't this where one previously would have found APN settings? Are they somewhere else now? I've searched like hell and haven't found any mention of them being moved.
Aren't APN's a GSM thing? I'm not sure if you'll see that on a VZW CDMA device. On that screen on my GSM phone I also have Access Point Names

Well that would explain it. Why am I thinking you had to add APN info for MMS on a Verizon device though? Perhaps I'm confusing myself.

Another VZW GNexer here. I absolutely cannot send MMS any more. Tried using voice to access the old apn settings menu, no luck. I can manually go into /system/etc/apns-conf.xml or /system/build.prop without issue and can access all apn-related text, but am not quite sure how to go about tackling the problem from there (wouldn't want to change the wrong setting).
I've done a bit of searching, and haven't quite found a solution that works for me on 4.2.1...
***Update***
Turns out, the issue was related to Handcent. No apn editing required. Go figure...

My phone doesnt take a sim
I have an LG opitmus G pro e980 on net10 att sim card.
Since the kitkat update android version 4.4.2, I have lost all mms.
I have noticed that you cannot set the APN type, which is greyed out and set at default.
Is there anyway around this issue or would I have to root.
If I would have to root could someone show me where to find the root for my phone with the current update. Minding that I am not to tech savvy when it comes to phones, if it could be like a rooting for dumbies, that would be fantastic,
Thanks for any replies and or assistance.

No, you can add a new APN. As I stated originally, everything else works well and fine as it always did. It is just the mms. From my research, this has happened to a lot of contract customers as well, but on the LG G2. I havent found anything on the GPro with contract people.
You are able to adjust all propterties in the network settings except APN Type, It is greyed out and you cannot change it. It currently says default.
I had the same issue after i updated to 4.2.2 on my phone. I am using Net10 with an at&t sim in it. I had to root and follow some instructions i had found on how to get the apn type frm being greyed out. As soon as i find it i will post a link.
heres the link i used and found, just follow the directions and it will work...

Sent from my LG-E980 using XDA Free mobile app
Edit: If you want this edit on the Oreo update (I just received it today) you must add the APN before updating. They have remove the button to add a new APN.
If it is added before you update it will stick!
I have only tested this on my sprint V30+ and am assuming it also works on the Sprint V30 and probably also the G6 but i cannot test them
also this should work on all the providers that require dun be active in the apn.
Even though the apns are locked(grayed out) and we cannot edit them they still allow us to add new ones.
so i tried adding an new apn with all the same settings as the default "internet" apn but adding in ,dun.
Worked Flawlessly! hotspot activated no hesitation.
Those of you who have other providers an wanna try you will need to get your default APN.
If your on sprint yours is probably the same as mine so you may skip to step #2.
Step #1
To view your current apn settings without your msl you open the dialer and type in ##debug# (##33284#) to open the hidden debug menu.
click on "Active APN Connections" and click on the default internet APN (Mine is titled "internet").
you can view all the settings but once again you cannot edit but right down your settings and then move on to step #2.
Step #2
now that you have your APN settings open settings and click More - Mobile networks - Access Point Names.
hit the 3 dot settings icon then hit add APN.
For Sprint only change the fallowing items leave everything else alone.
Name - hotspot (this can be anything you want)
APN - x.ispsn
Username - null
Password - null
APN type - default,mms,dun
APN protocol - IPv4/IPv6
others who decide to try this add all your settings in but like always add ",dun" to "APN type"
Now hit the 3dot menu again and save and thats it you should now see your new APN in the list of locked ones.
you do not have to do anything else in that menu just go turn on your hotspot and enjoy.
This method also holds through reboots.
Also...
Even though it is not grayed out you still cannot edit the new APN. if you make a mistake or just wanna make adjustments
you must hit Restore default settings in the 3dot menu and start all over again.
Edit
If Restore default settings does not show up in your menu after adding a new APN you can still reset them by typing ##scrtn# into your dialer an hit ok

No hotspot at all working?
If you have a phone which needs APN settings modified for it to function fully this may be of interest. In many cases you can simply go into Settings > Network > Network and Internet > Mobile Data and add an APN or edit an existing APN.
However in some cases you may find as I did that the SIM / phone combination does not allow you to edit or add APN settings. If you have root their may be ways to edit the APN configuration files directly. However with Android 10 and some other situations that becomes difficult if not impossible. In my case even the phone network service support could not update the APN setting. I knew what the APN settings needed to be but since I had an unrooted Android 10 device (a smartwatch in this case but it will work for phones also) I could not get access to folders to edit the configuration and it is unlikely it would have been saved due to Android 10's read only system partition.
On this device I had cellular phone calls and text working but NO Mobile data. I could see the APN settings were not correct for the service I was on for Mobile data to work. I tried everything for days to edit but it was grayed out and I could not add a new APN. In the process of pursuing a solution I found that putting in a different SIM (in this case a Textnow SIM for their new free phone service through Sprint) that I could edit the APN settings when that SIM was inserted. So you will need to find a SIM card that will allow you to edit settings.
Now the real trick involves hot swapping SIM cards so if you aren't comfortable with that then you won't be able to do this. There seems to be differing opinions on this but no phones or watches or SIM cards were damaged when I tried this.
What I did was edit the other SIM by changing the APN settings. Then when I hit the back key it said something to the effect the settings were not allowed on this. At that point I pulled out the SIM with the device ON. I then put back in the SIM for my service provider with the device still on. The settings showed up now on my formerly uneditable SIM ! Mobile data now worked fine. I
I had a second device I wanted to put the SIM in (identical to the first device) hoping the settings would still be there but they were not. Apparently communication between the SIM card and the phone gets APN settings transferred to the phone or watch. So I wanted to do the same procedure on this second device. In attempting that it did not seem to be working the same at first. However after trying for about an hour it finally worked on the second device also. So persistence pays off if it doesn't work at first. I kept turning things on and off in the Mobile data settings, rebooting and playing around with developer options. I wish I could say exactly what got it to work on the second device or why it just worked on the first device the first try but I haven't been able to pin down the variable which achieved success.
But the conclusion is that is you can't edit your APN settings normally you may have success with this method if you keep at it a bit. Good luck and please post here if you have success with this method and share any insights into how you got it to work for your device.
I know I'm a little late your one man party here. I just wanted to finally clear the air on this once and for all. So that every one can edit any and every so called "locked APN" for whatever carrier and or devices. So here we go. First off long time telecom cyber security engineer.
Step 1: Find all the APN's that your specific Carrier used for your Sim card and device. Write them down or screen shot them. Some carriers and devices may only use 1, others 2-3 +.
Step 2: Click and add another APN just as the 1 that is locked on the device. Option for option identical and click save. If you have only 1 APN. It should have now saved, unlocked the APN and you should have 2 identical. You can now go back and edit the APN that you just created. If not or you can't it usually means you have more APN's to add before they will unlock. Ultimately allowing for deletion. Have patience as this may require a little time of trial and error. Good luck all and have fun with it.

Had the same on my wife's P6. The connection would appear briefly, the call sometimes would go through but then connection lost and asked to switch off plane mode by the system. Tried 3 different sim cards, hard reset etc.
Filed a return and her new phone is working as it should now.
That sux, as mentioned an RMA may be needed...
Started happening to me when I updated to v37. It was fine until then. I'll probably flash the old radio image later on tonight.
Edit: nvm, the radio.img is the same between 36 and 37. It is odd that this just started happening in the last 24-48h.

The rest of the APN stuff seemed to break my mobile data.
Hope this works for others too.

Interesting. Did you contact T-Mobile or Google and asked about this?
This seems like the type of issue that should be easy to replicate.
I would suggest to contact Google either way, since your phone might have a hardware issue (partially defect antenna or whatever) and you need to sort this out, before you run out of warranty and get problems later down the road (fix not working anymore).

So do you mean go into SIM card network page where you can see APN volte etc....under APN and create a new APN but with the exact same setting from the carrier ?

This worked for me. Thanks bro!
I started by turning off 2G. Worked for about 3 or so days. Then the issue came back. So, I turned off WiFi calling because I read somewhere that it was causing issues. I haven't had the problem since. It's only been a few days though. FYI I'm on Verizon.
I'm pretty sure it's yet another bug on the long list of them on this phone..
Go into settings > Network and internet > Sims click your provider there scroll down to Preferred network type change to LTE. I figured this out on my wife's phone. You'll loose 5g but it'll get you by temporarily until you figure out a better solution.
