Hello, i rooted my Verizon Note 4 with PaulPizzrom everything is running smooth but am having abit of a problem getting into file transfer mode. After awhile a message pops up
"Attention
The connected device is unable to access data on this phone. Reconnect the USB cable and try again. Android File Transfer must be installed on Mac OS X devices. To download Android File Transfer, go to"
I'm using Windows 10 not Mac and don't know what else to do. I've unplugged and replugged on all usb ports and tried different usb cables. Any ideas anyone?

I've searched google/xda and no one seems to address this very clearly.
I was having problems connecting my SGSIII via USB to my computer(s). Yes, I was using the cable that came with the phone. When trying to simply transfer files via USB (MTP or PTP) windows would not recognize the phone and a message saying "usb device has malfunctioned" popped up from the notification area of the taskbar. I had all of the drivers installed. I tried connecting the phone to my laptop (thinkpad) and desktop (homebuilt) computers, which were both win7 64bit. I tried every single USB port of each computer. Sometimes the device would show up in my computer, but I couldn't access any of the files. I was able to get odin to recognize my phone, however, and (foolishly) tried to flash a rom to my phone. Odin would fail every time at a different point in the process. I was stuck with a phone that would not bootup.
Then, I tried a computer (old dell, win XP) at work. I tried to flash the rom with Odin again. On the third attempt it worked! (after changing to a back (instead of the front) USB port) It was a big relief that I didn't brick my phone. Also, with this computer I could connect to my phone via MTP or PTP. I thought, therefore, that the problem was win7. So, I went back, installed win XP on my computer at home. This computer would still not play nice with the phone. (USB device malfunctioned error appeared again.) So, if you're having problems try a different computer. I had to try 3 before I found one that worked.
TL;DR: Try a different computer and different USB ports on that computer before you give up on connecting your phone to a computer via USB.
Finally, I NEVER had these problems with my HTC Hero, or HTC Evo. The phone would connect to ANY computer or ANY USB port. This was true for transferring files and for ADB also. With my S3 I'm transferring files by removing the SD card and connecting that to my computer. Kind of a pain in the ass. Thanks samsung.
I apologize if this isn't the proper forum.
I had a Samsung Galaxy S3 (The non LTE version) with T-Mobile. I have used the KIES 3 software to backup my phone.
I got a Samsung Galaxy S4 (the M919 model) with T-Mobile.
First, I connected the phone to my Win7 64-bit Home Edition pc with the same Galaxy S3 USB cable. It charges, and I hear the "boo-beep" and Windows 7 says it's installing device software and then comes back and says "unknown device" installation failed. In Device Mangler, it shows up under USB controllers, for some reason as "unknown device".
Okay, so I reinstalled the Samsung USB drivers.
No go
I used the actual S4 cable that came with the phone.
No go.
I have done the debug USB mode. No go.
I have verified that the MTP protocol is used (vs. Camera) and that it's set to MTP+ADB
I've switched back and forth to camera vs. MTP
Windows seems to detect the USB signal in that it knows when it's plugged in and when it's not, but it seems to IMMEDIATELY (and I mean very very fast, like under 1 second) "find" it always as a USB controller -> Unknown Device
So, I've tried my laptop. windows 7 64-bit. Same thing.
I had a spare pc around, so I even reformatted the drive and put a fresh copy of windows 7 on it. Same thing.
I've manually installed the Samsung drivers (without KIES). Still no go.
So I guess my questions:
1) Is there some other method to verify USB port is working properly? (like can you connect it to something else and have it work)? I'm assuming it's good since not only does it charge, but it at least is attempted to connect with Windows 7
2) I've got 2 more cables ordered --official Samsung ones--just in case
3) Can you root and unroot a phone without USB? It seems they all require USB drivers, and ODIN to work. I ended up having to manually backup the S3 via GCloud or whatever to get my stuff transferred over.
Oh, I also have an SD card in the phone.
Yes, I tried unmount it, and even removing it, rebooting, etc. Still no go.
I am trying to find an XP machine to see if that works any better.
thank you.
Hi
I'm quite new to rooting and playing around with roms and kernels. Usually whenever I install a rom on my phone I usually download it on my computer then transfer the zip file into my phone via usb. I noticed a new rom had been released for the P8000 (nexus) and i wanted to try it out so I downloaded it on my pc but I was not able to transfer onto my phone. I got an error message on my pc saying 'could not transfer file, device may have been unplugged or is not responding'. The device certainly was not unplugged as the phone was still charging and I was able to continue browsing through my phone's files.
Have not connected a phone to a pc in ages.. Use droid over wifi!
dunno why that should be but why not just d/l directly with your phone? that's what I tend to do as it's faster than wifi transfer and my pc drivers don't seem to work with my p8000 either so can't connect to pc.
try to enable usb debugging (or disable). i had this some times ago with a samsung phone. connection option als camera could help maybe too.
regards
Maxon
First, I'm a relative newbie to flashing and I must say that these boards are incredible. I was able to bring new life back to my forgotten Note 8.0 by rooting and flashing the Lineage OS. I'm extremely happy with how it all turned out and couldn't have done it without all the great information on this site.
that said, i did encounter 2 minor issues. UPDATE: I WAS ABLE TO FIX #2.
1). The tablet will not connect to a mobile hotspot. The tablet sees the hotspot (my Samsung Galaxy 8 phone), but will not connect once the password is entered. The normal wifi works so it isn't the end of the world, but I was going to use the table as my cars navigation, but it needed to be powered by my phone since I have the wifi only version of the Galaxay 8.0.
2). When I connect my tablet to my computer, the computer recognizes the tablet, but when I click on it in the file manager it says "No Info" (not the exact words, but you get the idea).
UPDATE: I HAD TO OPEN DEVELOPER OPTIONS TO TURN OFF USB DEBUGGING FOR THE COMPUTER TO RECOGNIZE THE TABLET.
THEN: I tapped on the charging battery icon and a message appeared saying the following AND CLICKED ON "Transfer files to Windows or Mac (MTP)"
Use USB for
Charging
Just charge this device
Power supply
Charge the other connected device
File transfers
Transfer files to Windows or Mac (MTP)
Photo transfer (PTP)
Transfer photos or files if MTP is not supported (PTP)
MIDI
Use device for MIDI input
I TRIED TO PROPERLY ATTRIBUTE THE LINK THAT HELPED ME SOLVE THIS ISSUE, BUT I WASN'T ALLOWED.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Hi
I would appreciate any input/help on this issue.
I bought the Korean Note 10 + 5g exynos (SM-N976N), specifically for the purposes of being able to root it. I would prefer to use the Magisk approach, because I would like to be able to use Google Pay, amongst others
Try as I might, I cannot get my PC to "see" the android phone. I have engaged developer mode, checked USB debugging, checked the the USB connection as MTP mode, and gone through several cables, going by the advice of "experts" I consulted. I even went as far as returning my original phone and buying a new one, again, on the advice of an "expert" who determined that my original phone was faulty (unlikely, since I had literally taken it out of the box and attempted the rooting before trying to load my multiple software). I am using Windows 10, 64k, with all current Microsoft updates.
I have reloaded the Samsung USB drivers, rebooted both the phone and PC several times, to no avail. When I connect, in download mode, the USB cable between the two devices, I hear the "ping" on the PC, indicating that the two have made contact, but then - nothing. I have established that the cable works fine, by connecting my Note 8 to the PC, where it shows up as a device with two drives (int and SD card)
I have installed Magisk on the 10+, and modified the stock ROM with Magisk, and then copied that over to the PC, as advised by the rooting solution; the problem is that I cannot use Odin to flash that modified ROM because Odin does not recognize any phone attached to it!
Help, Please!!
Could be the Odin version your using
Perhaps, I hadn't thought of that. I am using 3.13.1. Do you have a suggestion about using a more stable/useful one? My only issue with your answer is that it's not just Odin that isn't responding- it's the entire computer - it's as if the phone doesn't exist when connected.
I'm guessing you are using a USB 3.0 port on pc? If you have access to USB 2.0 try that....
Next thing I'd suggest (with note plugged in while in download mode)....go into device manager (right click This PC)
Find device under Modem, open properties Ports tab, Advanced Settings and manually change the port setting to a lower port assignment (preferably between 1 & 5). Reboot pc and just for kicks reset the phone into Download Mode again....Give odin a try now.
Hope one or a combination of these methods help.
