One can only wonder what the heck verizon does to their software such that it requires a 612meg security patch huh?
Anyhow.. Time to use that nandroid i posed in the dev section to accept the OTA.. -or- I will post an updated one later this evening.
Probably 600mb of updated NFL bloatware included and the rest just the security update.
Any word yet on whether this is really just a 612Meg security patch?

Anyone know if letting this thing run and update will break root? I'm stock, rooted. Don't want to lose that and not be able to get it back myself.

are you SOFF? if so, you will be fine
Yes.. I'm s-off and unlocked. So after it updates, will it still be rooted? Or would I havery to re-root it? I'm just worried because my cable Internet isn't working for a few days and I need my wifi tether. Thanks
Ran into an issue with this update. It failed to install on 11/3 with a error code 409, but when I try to download it again by selecting "Check for new system updates" it says I have the latest update. I've rebooted a number of times and it shows up every time. From what little information I can find online, I have to reset my phone to factory then attempt to update again. I want to avoid this so here I am.
I'm on my phone so I can't properly upload the screenshots. I posted Google Drive links for now

Flash the custom firmware zip and restore the nandroid I posted of the update. Then wipe data for the app htcdm. Flash supersu.zip and you're done.

I'm not rooted.
Update: I decided to just to a factory reset. Thankfully it worked and I am at the latest firmware.
So I've tried letting this update run a couple times. Downloading for the third time as I write this. When it tries to install, it just reboots into TWRP recovery and does nothing. Then I restart the phone and basically start the process all over again. Any guidance on how to get this squared away?? I met one of the members here with a card who S-offed, unlocked, rooted, my phone which I'm thankful for. Just want to be stock rooted is all. Don't really do much with custom roms on this phone. Thanks.

After successfully converted to US Unlocked, Nougat, I tried to revert back by flashing firmware.zip and TWRP backup. But after the first time flashing the firmware.zip, I tried to reboot to download mode to complete the 2nd flashing but the phone just shut down. Now I cannot turn it on anymore and it does not even register charge from the charger. Have I bricked it? My is Japan variant, S-Off, bootloader relocked

The correct way to revert would be to change the CID back then flashing the corresponding firmware etc. If you tried flashing the firmware for Japan but still had the CID set to us unlocked then yes you possibly bricked the phone.
I changed the cid back to Japan variant already, if the CID was not correct it wouldn't flash anyway. The problem is that the phone isn't receiving charge from the charger. I believe the phone would still hold a charge even if brick.

may I ask what firmware you flashed to revert back?
If you flash an incremental one it will brick. need to flash a full/combined firmware from @Sneakyghosts thread
Same thing happened to me this morning, went to flash a FW and boom, brick. Not sure what I did wrong but will not do it anymore lol.
I've sent it away to HTC for repair. Has anyone else went this route and know what to expect?
I'm worried they will get it back on and see that it's S-OFF and a different CID than what it should be. I have a Sprint variant.

theres no sprint nougat firmware, so you flashed an GSM firmware on your CDMA sprint? Not good.
This is why I take as few risks as possible when flashing. I'm still on a MM rom and will be until we get an official TWRP. And I only flash firmware/roms made for my device. Just my $0.02. Keep the change.

I did it once before. I removed all radio img files and any other img files that the Sprint firmware doesn't contain. I think what did me in was flashing it while on an official Sprint Marshmallow ROM. The other time I did it I was already on a Nougat ROM. Might've been Viper or CM 14 a few days ago.
Learned my lessons haha. One question tho, what if I were to flash a RUU, matching CID and MID, would it be ok?

I am only going to tell you the safest way because I don't want you to brick another phone. Assuming you're already on a custom rom:
1. Download the N ruu.exe for your device from HTC. Right now all they have is N for the US unlocked. The rest should be available in Jan. It won't kill anyone to wait that long.
2. Run the executable on your computer and follow the easy prompts. This will perfectly install the stock N rom.
3. Flash the official TWRP via fastboot command.
4. Use TWRP to format your data partition then flash the custom N rom of your choice. SuperSu should be included with the rom.
Finished. Yes, there are all kinds of things you can do instead. I use my phone for work too so I ain't going there.
Hello,
I'm trying to look for the fresh stock rom of SGH-I317 rom so I can flash my phone back to normal. I owned this phone since 2012, I had it rooted and everything else. Last night, it decided to do something funny and now it gets stuck on samsung logo/battery and I can only access download mode for the time being.
So I assume I have to factory set everything and lose data--which i don't care about anymore.
Can anyone please help? Thank you. Stock rom is what I need and Odin as well. Thanks again =)
Adam.
As far as I know there are at least 4 different STOCK versions of SGH-I317 firmware namely 4.1.1 4.1.2 4.3 and 4.4.2. 4.1.2 is the same as 4.1.1 but it has SIM unlock backdoor closed. 4.1.1 is interchangeable up to 4.3 with certain limitations, as soon as you get 4.4.2 you are stock to it.
4.3 is my personal favorite but I can't seem to find clean AT&T ROM for some time now (everything else is available).
If I were you I'd start powering up the phone while holding home and arrow up buttons, do "wipe data/factory reset" follow with "wipe cache partitions" and you should be golden

REALLY??? Please show us the link for upgrade! As I said there is no OEM 4.3 ROM at sammobile
I was told many many times that AT&T (and this is the one we are talking about) 4.4.2 ROM can not be downgraded!
I tired the downgrade and yes the system will go down to 4.1.1 but it would keep the 4.4.2 bootloader so the phone won't charge while being off (making it pretty useless).
@audit13 : I've the phone since 2012. I think Im getting a new as is but I know this phone can't be done just yet. if I'm able to access download mode that should warrant itself the possibility of it being fixed. Just need that thread to follow those directions =)

Have you flashed the stock ROM onto your device? What bootloader version or stock ROM build did you have before you flashed the stock 7.0 build and took the update?
Downgrading to older stock firmware and then attempting to update is generally what caused that hard brick. If you can let us know what device/territory you had, we can try to point you to the right firmware to flash.

Yes I have flashed stock firmware on my device I remember downgrading to marshmallow then updating back to nougat then my device fully shut down it was all black. After this incident, i did what you would normally do and that was to use blank flash to at least get the bootloader back, as I did get the bootloader I could not use the boot options such as recovery mode. so I am basically stuck on the bootloader and can do nothing. My device is an addison XT1635-02 and before I flashed nougat ota I had the marshmallow December security update.

I also believe my device is hard bricked as I cant access boot options at all it just keeps boot looping once I try to access a boot option. also is it normal for my bootloader to say that my software status is modified because I think after you flash blank flash your software status modified. finally, I have been trying to flash stock firmware but for some reason, gpt and bootloader.img always fail to flash. Thanks for the reply I hope you can help.

Should be possible, there's a thread here on how to help repair your bootloader, which has a link for some updated firmware for you to try : https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/how-to/guide-unbrick-moto-z-play-t3618492/page33
I would recommend confirming it's for your device. You are likely getting the errors you mentioned as the bootloader and GPT are perhaps to old for your repaired bootloader and so are not accepted. Which blank flash did you use to repair your device? I'd just like to check you've used the correct blankflash before proceeding. Also, which GPT/bootloader were you trying to flash that gave you the errors?
I think the service centre could charge you up to 70-80 % of the original cost for a new motherboard if this can't be resolved.

As far as I know, blankflashes are CPU specific, and may also be device specific, though we've had some success using a Moto Z2 play blankflash to rescue Moto Z Play devices that are hard bricked. There's some more info here https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/how-to/guide-unbrick-moto-z-play-t3618492/page19 and here https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73474192&postcount=249
Which blank flash did you use? Also, which July security patch firmware are you flashing? sounds like your need 7.0 or 7.1.1 firmware to proceed. That firmware link would take you up to 7.1.1, yes, but I would advise not to downgrade in future.
Also, please edit your posts rather than making new replies. I understand you're wanting to get your device fixed without paying a lot of money to fix it, give us time to respond.

If your device was ever on stock Nougat (7.0 or 7.1.1), then flashing that marshmallow ROM won't likely work in repairing your bootloader. You need a firmware that is the same or newer than the latest firmware your device had. Downgrading stock firmware does not usually downgrade your bootloader, hence the corruption and need to have same or newer firmware to repair. Your bootloader would otherwise reject old firmware via preflash validation errors.
Hopefully the 7.1.1 firmware will help fix things. You will lose data however in the process of flashing your device, so hopefully you have backups.

I understand you're wanting to get your device fixed without paying a lot of money to fix it, give us time to respond.

how is it recognized by the PC in device manager?
I have an A50(A505U through Sprint) with a locked bootloader. I've tried the 7 day trick to enable Oem Unlock in Developer Options but it doesn't work. I'm wondering what the chances of being able to to force oem unlock using adb is without bricking my device? I figure this is to easy of a solution but hoping someone is willing to try it!
I also have the same Sprint A505U and I'm having the same problem. Hope we get a resolution for this.
im picking up a verizon A505U tomorrow.. out of curiosity, are you able to flash combo firmware?
also to add, you cant force oem unlock using adb.. you can probably set the oem unlock to on in adb but it doesnt actually change the unlock bit wherever its stored in the firmware so as soon as you reboot its back to 0.
If you can flash combo however you can enable oem unlock then flashing back to stock the oem unlock bit should remain on.
Either way, I will be playing with it all weekend lol.. i just hope its not like the A102U i purchased from tmo which doesmt let me flash anything

Yes I have used Odin to flash a sprint firmware from samfrew and and found out it was sprint verzion firmware when poking around.
I suspect it is going to be the same. All U variants can't be unlocked from what I've been told.

To flash vzw/sprint combo firmware? I flashed it on a 505u from Sprint with Odion after an expirament resulted in a soft brick.

Nope. I got in to download mode and flashed the sprint firmware from samfrew and it works fine. I discovered the firmware has some vzw apps included but not all of typical vzw bloat.

im confused lol..
i can install stock firmware fine whether its sprint or not..
what im wanting to flash that i cant so far is the A505U Factory Combination firmware, not the stock based firmware.
Factory combo firmware usually cant flash and will say it needs approval to flash factory binary..

I take it it's currently impossible to unlock the bootloader on the SM-A505U?
I haven't done much with Android since I had a spat of amnesia so I don't remember much, but is it possible to root this phone without unlocking the bootloader? I don't have any plans of installing a custom ROM, just want root privileges.
Witam! I znalazł ktoś jakiś sposób na odblokowanie? Zależy mi bardzo na TWRP oraz Root.
Was anyone able to flash a combination AP file? I get a secure check fail for everything. I'm using Heimdall. Whichever packet is uploaded first, it will fail at that packet.
Edit: Just realized it's probably because of RMM state. Has anyone discovered a bypass? I guess I'll try waiting for 7 days with no sim card and see if that does it. Tried Chimera tool to RMM Unlock with no luck

Following along this thread. This is my first post ever. I have some experience with odin and Samsung. I would like to try out flashing and return with the results. Not afraid to soft brick. Could I possibly get a link to anything you have so far and I will share anything I find? Thank you.
