Quick unlock causes reboot - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

When my Pixel 3 XL is booting up, if I unlock it quickly than it reboots again. Since I am running magisk, Edxposed and Gravitybox, there seems to be some race condition causing the crash.
If I wait 30 seconds for the device to settle before unlocking then everything seems fine. I haven't had any crashes once the device is successfully unlocked.
Has anyone else seen this problem?

Same here. Everything else is working great though.

Heard it's a problem with EdXposed and Gravity Box that's causing soft reboots when phones start back up or unlocking

Same here. Random and tolerable.

Phone Locks Up When Charging

When I charge my phone overnight and go to turn it on in the morning the phone is completely locked up and I have to reboot it. It doesn't happen all the time but it has happened 3-4 times now. I'm wondering if it is a hardware or software issue. There are a few apps that are running in the background such as Kin Screen, Automate and LightFlow. Has anyone else had this problem?
I have not. I am using 8.1 beta. What are you on?

Version 8.0.
I recommend 8.1 as it resolves the majority of the burn in issues . Let me know if that fixes your issue
No lock up on 8.0 here. I don't use any of those background apps though.

I will give this a shot. Thanks.
I have tried everything, disabled everything and every morning my phone is locked up and I have to reboot it. Funny thing is that I have tried fully charging it during the day and it doesn't happen although usually, it's around 60-70%, not 20-30% like it is a night. I am going to try resetting the phone one more time but this is so frustrating.

Screen not coming on *Solved*

Finally, I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out why when I unlock/turn the phone on the screen wouldn't come on. I'd get feedback when I touch the screen but it would remain on a black screen I would have to hard reset the phone to get it back up only for it to do it again a few seconds later. We'll come to find out it was the Root "Magisk" that was the culprit so unfortunately I had to remove Magisk and I haven't a problem since. Just thought this may help someone who's having a similar issue.
I don't have this problem with Magisk and haven't heard of anyone else having it either. Could it be a Magisk module rather than Magisk itself?

IDK all I know is since I've uninstalled the Root I haven't any issues but once I flash Magisk to reinstall Root the problem returns
Wow I just had that same problem. Man i thought i was going crazy. I resorted to a factory reset but reinstalled Magisk. I haven't had the problem yet. So if it does happen again I'm uninstalling it until the nest update. But thanks for letting me know. Now does anyone know why after the 8.1 update it takes my screen a good second to turn on using power button and fingerprint scanner. I hate that delay.

I don't know why it happens, but I've read several articles that say that Google is aware and working on the issue.

Screen Flashing When Locked

My screen flashes when the screen locks. It does this for a bit and then just randomly stops doing it, until it starts again. I've contacted Google and they won't let me do an RMA saying it's a known issue and should be fixed in a coming update. Anyway else have this issue?

A monthly update is supposed to address it eventually.

Well hopefully. Thanks.
Well I'm running the April update and the flashing issue returned today again. Still no fix. Ugh.
Mine started doing it after the April update. I started uninstalling a bunch of apps (like rotation control) thinking it was causing the issue. But nope...
Clearing cache and data, disable, & re-enable helps.

But I've even tried resetting the phone as well as flashing system image, still does it.

I think I've seen this just one time for me. It's consistently happening every time? Does this happen in safe mode?

Not happening all the time. Does it for like 10 mins then stops for a week or two before randomly doing it again.
It's infuriating, as people keep thinking I'm taking their photo. Anyone heard anything more about a fix?
Long discussion in Pixel product forum. No fix helped yet. I have heard that Google isn't allowing replacements because of the flashing; which hopefully means that they are working on a fix.
We'll have a new security update in a few days - I have everything crossed!
My XL started doing it today. Think I updated yesterday to the 5 May patch.
Just rebooted and it stopped. But I'm sure it will return
I am on the P beta and so far the screen flickering disappeared.

Same here... Good so far.
Any updates on this? Still good on P beta? I have a brand new 2 xl (Literally 5 days old) and just started experiencing this today. Should I just wait for P to release or should I go back to the verizon store and get a replacement?
I just picked up the XL 2 yesterday and my screen started flashing today. Called Google support and they said it is a software issue and that they are working on a fix for it and will roll it out in an update. Seems rather strange they've heard about this for 6 months and still no update as of yet. My bet is that this "fix" is Android p.

Random Restarts after updating to android 10

My pixel 2 XL worked great until updating to Android 10. Now it randomly restarts a few times a day. Is there a quick way to figure out if it software or hardware related?

If your bootloader unlocked, you may try fastbooting the factory image without the -w to both slots. That's how I update to 10, and I don't have the issue you mentioned.
Unfortunately I have the Verizon variant. May be trying a factory reset and update if I can't figure something out soon
Are you using AdGuard? My pixel 2 xl also restarted randomly until I uninstalled adguard.

Yes, I'll uninstall that app next. Thanks for the suggestion.
Mine is randomly the screen become black untill i press power button to force restart i returned back to 9
It seems adguard was the culprit. Phone has been running fine and with better battery since deleting it.

Rooted Pixel 3 XL frequently freezes on Android 11

I've updated to Android 11 a few days ago and since then my phone freezes multiple times a day. The screen is still partially usable and I can invoke the restart menu with long power button press but it doesn't do it. I always have to use the very long power button press to reset it.
I'm using Nova Launcher, but it also froze with the stock Google launcher. I did the update with the factory image and used Magisk Canary to unlock.
I'm pretty puzzled what's going and can't find anything on the internet, except mentions of that on earlier Android 11 versions.
Does someone have similar experiences or tips how to fix this?
I experienced the same thing yesterday. I had to do a reset like you did. I'm also rooted with Magisk Canary and use Nova like you. I'm wondering if at some point I will have to do a full clean install.

Yup, same here, also rooted. Literally happened 2 minutes ago. There's no pattern to it either - so not when I use a particular app or anything.
Not on nova though, just the stock launcher.
Same here. Froze this morning while it was sitting on the counter charging. Takes power button long press to get it to restart. Then, it hangs right after I enter my pin. I have to restart it 4 times before it gets past the "hang".
I'm having the same issue here. Phone has frozen multiple times after rooting. Other times it works fine. Can't seem to figure out the cause. Also no particular apps being used. I'm on Nova.

After disabling all Magisk modules, it worked fine and booted. I'll report back if I have issues again. Maybe it's a module causing it. I had Viper, systemless Host and WiFi Bonding. Not sure if one of these was causing it.

Interesting you mention charging... I had just put mine on charge last night when it happened.
same thing, was locked up and only option was to hold power/ volume up to reset. it would reboot and do it again, this happened 4 times in a row and then I noticed I was not able to get into my app drawer so on the 5th time I quickly went into titanium and froze nova launcher and I am in. My Magisk I have Props config, busybox and systemless hosts for modules. I see there is an update for props config and magisk manager so will try that. I was debating flashing back to 10 if this keeps up

Seems there is an issue with the Systemless Host module and that's the only module I have enabled. There are several posts in the XDA Adaway thread that point to it. It's been reported on GitHub and in the Magisk thread, too.
I have had this also. Finally today I found the module, at least for me. It is the systemless hosts module. Makes sense...they moved that around a bit in 11.

Ty!
What i did was just install systemless hosts module after install any other modules and reboot. No more freezing for me. Hope it works for you!
I can't see any modules in my Magisk. I can click on 'Systemless hosts' in Settings, but I can't deactivate them. I disabled Superuser access for AdAway and so far the phone hasn't crashed.
Thanks for the tip!
Update: it just froze
Has anyone read about any updates to this issue?

Nothing happening on GIT. But the issue is still open so he will fix it. I know there is major release coming for Magisk so that is probably taking priority.
I can't see any modules, so I switched Magisk to 'Magisk Core Only Mode' but my phone is freezing every few hours. I have to downgrade to Android 10 to be able to use it.
I had it without root and clean install, just fully stock but sadly it's very buggy. Gboard lags, Sistem UI glitches while in landscape and full screen mode, it's unstable to play games and will break some elements like settings, general ui, unresponsive navbar even in gestures and in some cases will lag the phone completely.
My overall experience it's like walking in a forest full of landmine, admiring how the new small feature helps and satisfy but once you enjoy much of it you suddenly step in a landmine with tons of bugs
With AdAway 5.09 I only had one freeze yesterday. I have since disabled Systemless Hosts and no freezes so far.

I'm on adaway v4, deleted systemless hosts, install my modules, reboot, install systemless hosts, reboot AND no more problems for me. Hope it works for you if you need adaway.
The only thing that helped for me is disabling the systemless hosts module.
No combination of clean re-imaging, installing different versions of magisk, or module enable/disable reboot manipulation helped.
This is with adaway 5.0.9. To be clear, I can clean boot with these fixes people have suggested, but after 1-3 days, you'll end up frozen and need to reboot again, hopefully without missing calls or sms in the process.
Hopefully there's a fix sooner than later, but as a workaround you can use vpn based ad blockers. It looks like adaway has an option for this on 5.0.9, but it's greyed out. I assume it's available if you deny it root access to the app.
Glad I wasn't the only one having this issue, I thought after updating to October monthly update it'd be resolved but nope. Kinda bummed that the main reason I root is to use adaway and now I have to disable systemeless host. Hopefull there'll be a stable fix soon
I had enough with it too so caved and factory reset , re rooted and back to where I was.
1 day, so far no glitches! And it does seem smoother and less battery drain .
