Any reason not to contact Samsung about warranty service? If it won't turn on or go into recovery, it's hard to imagine what else you could do.

The best solution is to take it to an official service center, that is, providing the proper ownership proof, for legally acquired devices, it is an easy thing, otherwise, you will not find any help over here

Are you assuming that the device is stolen or acquired illegally because it won't turn on?

No, he's assuming it because "my niece's boyfriend's" is a lot of distancing from ownership. Add to that he's asking here instead of doing the obvious, and taking it to a service center.

I myself have asked questions here for family members, friends, etc. Also, the obvious solutions to many questions here would be, take your device to a service center. Last I checked XDA was for device related issues, not assumptions.

You held in volume down + power for more than 5 seconds? If you did and you can't get it to turn on then it's probably dead and you'll have to go through warranty.

Are there any 3rd party battery apps that may be limiting the charge percentage?
Are there issues with the volume rocker, does the volume increase/decrease smoothly and uniformly?
Apart from recovery mode (power ÷ volume up) have you tried download mode (power ÷ volume down)?
Can it charge wirelessly past 77%?
Visit a service centre.

One X will not turn on

Hi there,
I have a 6 day old One X, Telecom NZ phone.
Last night while using maps the phone locked up, I allowed 30 seconds for it to come right and it didn't so I held down power for 10 seconds to reboot. Upon reboot I was presented with the HTC Quietly Brilliant screen with the message below in red "This build is for development purposes only. Do not distribute outside of HTC without HTC's written permission. Failure to comply may lead to legal action." The aforementioned boot screen would remain indefinitely until I pressed the power button upon which it would momentarily turn off before rebooting to the same boot screen.
I feel at this point I should note that the phone is completely stock and I have not begun to tweak anything at all yet.
So after this screen being on for an hour or so, possibly enough to drain the battery (battery was near 40% before the phone began acting up), I long pressed the power button and it turned off, that was the last time I saw my screen display anything. Assuming the battery may have died coincidentally at the same time I pressed the button I was hoping a stint on the charger at home may fix everything. Charged for a couple hours on my PC with no sign of life from the phone, then a couple hours on my wall charger with nothing, then all night approx 10 hours on my PC again and still nothing.
I have also tried all the button combinations including those recommended by HTC for hard reboot and hard reset.
These include: Hold vol down + briefly push power; 30 seconds hold power; hold power with both and either of the vol up or down (tried all combinations).
By the look of it I am in for a warranty claim, do you think so?
If so shall I talk to the chain store I bought the phone from or to HTC directly?
Thanks for reading
Van

I believe I have the right to a repair, replacement or refund, which option is of their choosing, usually the repair option, and from past experiences that can take multiple weeks I'm also reasonably confident a courtesy or loan phone wont be on offer either.
Even if it's a week old?

Yeah I'm pretty sure it doesnt matter if its not working out of the box, they have the option to send for repair
I will go in and talk to them this afternoon
Is it just a dodgy Power-On button...
I Think with a lot of HTC handsets there is a replacement power button, I think it's VOL+ on most handsets...

Hi thanks for your suggestion but I have tried all buttons and all combinations repeatedly before taking it back.
I have now taken it back and due to lack of HTC One X stock and decreased price on the Galaxy S3 I was able to exchange the phones directly, really happy they agreed to direct replacement rather than repair as select chain sotres have done to me before even when only 2 days after purchase.
I do not know how to but this thread should now be closed despite not being solved
Thanks

Hey,
I had the same problem, send it in for warranty and got it back If i want to replace mainboard for 223,36 euro.
Broke as I am I went searching and found a thread. I will search the thread for you and link it. It is a script you run with your phone connected to your pc/notebook. That's how I charged my one x. Unlocked it with htcdev.com flashed cwm and installed custom Rom. Or run RUU.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1658084
At first it didn't load to 3860Mv (above 30%) this was due my pc after it tried the script on my girlfriends laptop it charged!
You can also try to send it in to HTC and cross your fingers. =)
All credits to the OP of the thread.

Dave

[Q] "Bricked" After Overheat Auto-Shutdown - Desperate To Retrieve Data

JimBadger said:
Hi,
I'm genuinely sorry if this is an often repeated thread, but I couldn't find anyone here suffering from exactly the same symptons as me.
I've had my One X for a couple of months, it's completely unrooted and has nothing on it you can't get from Google's app market. I'm with Orange, in the UK, so the phone's running all their default stuff.
My phone's been running quite hot ever since I got it, but, today, I had it in my pocket while I drove to work (20) minutes, and it must have overheated and turned itself off.
I couldn't turn it on, and, in my panic, I held the power button for ten seconds, and saw the buttons at the bottom flash. Since then, nothing at all, no charging light (from USB or mains). I've tried all combinations of power/volume button presses and absolutely nothing has happened at all. Nothing at all since the first button flashes on the first long power button press (10 seconds). Now, it's been like that for about 8 hours and has been on and off charge all day, to no avail. (no LED at all, at any point, red nor green).
I've just got back from holiday and have a tonne of pictures and vids I have probably lost, but want to try to recover. I'd be really, really grateful for the assistance of the experienced people here. I'm, as you may have picked up, a hopeless newb.
When I connect via laptop to USB, the computer (Windows 7) detects an APX device, whatever that is, but the automated driver installation fails. Nothing shows up in Windows explorer.
Is there anything I/You/We can do?
My last resort is to send it back to Orange, and ask if they can retrieve data, but I expect they'll just send a new phone and wipe/refurbish my old one for someone else.
Is it possible to send phones back to HTC for repair, without losing data?
And finally, although I've not seen anything on the screen at all, no bootloaders, no recovery screen, nothing, might some combinatin of my button-mashing have already wiped the phone?
On a scale of One to OH DEAR...how screwed am I?
Please help me, XDA!
Edit: Ah, I can see it as a device, actually. Shows up as an "APX Device", but I can't do anything with it.

I had the exact same issue as the above user, only change is that my phone has been rooted... is it still worth sending off to retrieve data on the SD card or will they refuse to fix it as it is rooted?

There is absolutely no chance of data being retrieved, even if requested? And sure I can pretend I didn't root it but will they not find that it has been rooted? It was still on the stock rom but not stock recovery

Sorry, but no chance at all, the Htc service technician would directly replace a new board on your phone and discard the old one, meaning they wouldn't even bother try repairing the old board, and all you data would be on the old board.
and since the phone doesn't turn on, as i told u previously they wouldn't take the pain of repairing the old board and finding out if ur phone was rooted or not, they would directly replace the entire board. (at-least that's what they did to me, when i tried it  )
out of curiosity, didnt u use the auto-upload dropbox feature ?
u pics would be on dropbox.com if u did. u could log in with ur id and pass

I'm not sure if your information is just from personal experience but the reason why any official repair center won't retrieve data is because of the action of doing so is tangled up in many privacy laws and it's not worth the hassle.
As far as I am aware HTC will repair anything that's within their skill set which is pretty much anything, but the cost of their labour is high and given the HTC One X is currently a £350 phone, it may not be worthwhile.
@OneX94 I can completely sympathise with you – such a ball ache to lose em after a holiday!
Can I ask about some of the more particular details of your phone? You said it was rooted – did you have a custom rom and CPU frequency adjustment apps etc?

[Q] Hard bricked, but...

Hi there, I hard bricked my Tab S 8.4. No reaction to anything I did (key combinations, let it charge for hours, stuff like that). Don't know how it happened but it just crashed to death shortly after installing an inofficial Lolloipop build from here. I don't think a ROM can make a device not turn on at all. My money is on hardware failure.
Anyway, brought it in for repairs (willing to pay since I knowingly voided the warranty). Got the call yesterday. They said the software had been tampered with and they can't repair it. I objected that the software won't break the hardware but no dice. They won't even do it for cold hard cash.
BUT: To see the 'illegal' software they HAD to get the thing to turn on . And if they got it to turn on somehow, so can I. Or... am I completely wrong there and they have some magic fairy dust?
Any ideas on how I could accomplish what the repair guys could obviously do? There is no important data or anything on it so I'd be happy with Odin mode, CWM or whatever.

I kindof had the same problem, but got mine repaired.
May I ask where you send it to for repairs? Was it Samsung or a local repair shop that told you they could not fix it?
And did they send it back to you? Kindof weird they won't fix your device after you say you are willing to pay for it.
Depending on where you live, Samsung covers a lot of 'problems' in the first year of the standaard warranty.
As for turning on the device..
What options have you tried yet?
If you connect the tablet with usb to your pc and turn it on, does it get recognized?
And if so, as what?
But if your screen doesn't turn on, you're probably going to need repairs anyway.

Over here you bring it back to the shop where you bought it. They will try the simplest solutions in house but usually send it back to the manufacturer. I think the information came from Samsung directly. Another theory I have is a simple lie. They tried it in house, nothing came up, some clever guy screamed 'CYANOGEN!' and they all high fived (I have a vivid imagination )
As for turning it on: tried everything. It's not only the screen, it did nothing at all. No signs of life whatsoever. Of course the PC wouldn't recognize it since it was turned off.
I'll pick it up tonight. Maybe whatever they did to see the software tampering stuck and it will at least go into Odin mode. I can work from there.

It simply reset itself after the battery completely died. Black screen and no response doesn't mean the device is off.
As soon as they switched it on they would have seen knox had been tripped.

so last night my phone just all the sudden just black and power button was unresponsive. I plugged it into my charger and my main menu screen appeared. My battery was at 84 percent so i know the battery wasn't dead. The only way i am able to turn my phone on now is by the double tap function. I have done system updates and such and am still not able to figure out this issue. Hopefully someone from here can help me out.
Sounds like a harware problem but can't test unless you have unlocked your bootloader, rooted and installed a power toggle widget from the playstore.
A reboot might fix it but if the power switch is no good then heaven help you if the power dies.

Nope, would suggest an RMA as you need to use power button to turn off and on.
Remember, if you bought it online you might have an emailed receipt or, if bought at a shop, they might be able to reprint the receipt as long as you can supply date and roughly the time. Helps if they register the receipt in a database as I've had them retrieved from 2 years prior that way...

Note 10+ stuck at watchdog reset

Hi all. I am baffled as to what happened to my phone. It has no mods and is running stock android 11. It was absolutely fine, not having any issues at all, and I realized I hadn't rebooted it in a few weeks. So, I did a plain old restart.
And it died.
It won't do anything no matter how long I hold the power button down. The battery is fully charged.
Tried to get to the recovery screen by holding down volume up and power, which did nothing. Then I tried vol down and power and got a screen I've not seen before: SS RDX Watchdog Reset.
And here I am stuck. I plugged in a usb cable to my laptop and now there's a device connected on my laptop called msm_upload which I can only see from the windows Bluetooth and other devices panel.
I have no idea what to do from here and I'm desperate.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've never used smart switch before. If my pc doesn't see the phone, how would that work? My phone doesn't show up in my laptop except as a Bluetooth device called msm_upload that I can't figure out how to interact with? I guess I'll need to install smart switch on the laptop and hopefully it will see the device?

Very strange.
Sort of sounds like it's bricked.
Play with new firmware/software, win new prizes. I could go on...
You need to navigate to the boot menu somehow. Keep playing with the buttons; sequence and ***timing*** is everything.
If you can drain the battery until it auto shutdown that might get it... much latter.
Disconnect the battery and force a hard reboot.
Otherwise it's repair shop time.

I went to a repair shop out of desperation. Had to drive over an hour to get to it as I live in the country, and he basically said it's dead. The fun part is, I called my warranty co and of course, they aren't honoring the warranty because "they don't insure phones that cost over $999" which mine did when I got it. But of course, there was nothing that said they didn't cover my phone, which is why I bought their lease/warranty plan.
So, basically, I have a brick that I owe $591 on yet, and they couldn't care less. At this point, I am willing to try anything at all because I have no other options. I already filed a BBB report against them after spending over an hour on the phone with them to no avail.
Any ideas at all would be very helpful at this point.
Also, I CAN still get to that SS RDX Watchdog Reset screen and it will scan an SD card (because I tried it). The problem is, I cannot for my life find a stock Note 10+ ROM anywhere that I can actually download. Wondering if I should just try to throw a custom ROM on it instead? It's obviously not going anywhere otherwise.

There's a stock rom for it, obviously.
If you can degrade to 10, do so.
The boot loader version will dictate if you can or can't.
I'm not experienced enough to advise you on this but that's what might be needed.
Again play with the button sequence/timing and try to get into the boot menu.
Just a slight difference in timing or the wrong sequence and it won't go to the boot menu.
It's not likely but possible the buttons were remapped.
Try taking out the Sim and SD card.
My guess is you can get it to go to the boot menu but until today I never heard of this happening.
A apk timed out because of not rebooting for so long? Don't do that again... at least reboot every couple days.
Malware is another possibility.
Last resort talk/send to Samsung.
Play with it... Androids wuv attention.
I'm having a RIDICULOUS time trying to find a clean copy of stock ROM for my Note. Every single one I've found either ends in a dead link or I download it and it ends up being corrupt. This is no small feat as I live in the middle of nowhere and the only ISP is Hughesnet, which is neither fast, nor unlimited. It literally took me 4 hours to download a 5gb alleged stock ROM only to have it be corrupt.
Isn't there anywhere to get a clean copy of stock??? I see a lot of mods here in XDA, but as far as regular stock SM-N975UI, either I'm totally missing something or there isn't one here.
Can someone please help me find one that is clean? SamMobile's download is limited to 15kbps for non paying members and their copy has been downloading literally since yesterday and is only at 900mb. Living in the country has its perks, but high speed internet isn't one of them. Nothing worse than checking on a download that was running all night to see it say it still has 2 days to go.

You'll need a much faster connection; that slow, that much data, the download has a great chance of being corrupted.
Maybe have a 3rd party download it and send it to you by mail etc. Samsung could... if you could harang them into doing so.

According to the authorized service center I visited yesterday, they don't even have access from Samsung. They are directed to send the phone directly to Samsung, which just floors me. I asked the tech if he could at least flash stock and see if we could get it to load, since I definitely can get to the SD card from Watchdog and it will read it. His reply was nope. I called 2 other repair shops since I was in the city already and got the same story.
Back in the day, rooting Android 4 was easier than this! Do you know of any reputable sites for stock roms? SamMobile is definitely out. And many I've gone to will list my stock, but when you follow the links, the file is no longer available. This feels like a bad X files episode at this point. LOL.

Talk, write to Samsung and lean on them.
You'll probably end up sending it in. Take detailed pictures of the phone before boxing it and as boxing it. Double box it and pack/seal it well. Insure the package!
Fight with Samsung if they try to charge you more than $50. Expect trouble... Samsung's tech support is one of the worst on this planet.
Finding stock ROM should not be that difficult, by browsing through the forum, Guides, News & Discussions:

File a complaint with your state attorney general's office.
Against the warranty company and especially the carrier.
Lean on the carrier, verbal breach of contract because the warranty company refused to repair it.
I'd stiff the carrier out of principle. It's likely they wouldn't bother to take it to small claims court.
Before you do that though lean on them like a cheap suit, call, call, call. Talk to their retainment group. Don't give them a moments peace. One time I called Verizon close to 30 times in a week before they finally issues a full credit over a Direct TV breach of contract. If I was you I be seeing red...
