October security update brought a few new things - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Today's October security update brought changes to the SMS app compose box area. Now to the left of the compose area a toggle appears which reveals the camera, gallery and Samsung apps chooser menu.
I haven't noticed any other changes so far.

I got the October patch on November 1st. I am pretty sure it was just security patches. I have noticed better battery life on my G960U1 S9 but that could just be me.
I think there is also an extra LTE bar now. Other than that I think that's it.

I've also noticed in messages that if you use words like "today" or "tomorrow" it hyperlinks it like Facebook messenger does. I'm curious if the changes to the messages app is starting toward the adoption of RCS messaging.

Another subtle change in the Device Care screen, different graphics now.

I just read in the Samsung Members app that users of the S10 are complaining about this feature being turned on by default, without an option to turn it off. In my case I haven't seen links to other apps when typing words as "today" or "Monday" for example.

OK, my bad! I just tested my Messages app and indeed I'm getting links as you mentioned.

Anyone on Tmobile? Since updating to J2 all of my phones have horrible call quality.

Great news!
But honestly, what makes this app better than the Xperia Panel? :-s
I hope someone give us a comparison
I'm not overly impressed with any Facebook app/panel so far - they all miss out some features. For example, in this latest MS Facebook app you can't see multiple comments on people status. Also, sometimes I can't view photos. I click on the thumbnail, then pick view photo and it seems to attempt to load but never does. So either it's still buggy, or mine is just screwed...

I can't seem to use this app, it freezes everytime I tap "done" to login, and when I use wktask to terminate it, it freezes my whole phone so I have to press the reset button. Anyone else have any problems?
Running on R2 UK generic firmware. Tried the old version of facebook app but uninstalled it before installing this one.
hmm uninstalled again and reinstalled using a newly downloaded version from the ms site with a slightly different filename (v1.0.0.7p.cab) and it has now logged in but has been saying "requesting info" for a long time, connected over wifi too...

Porting over T-Mobiles new Advanced Messaging

http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/0...nced-messaging-to-make-texting-more-powerful/
T-Mobile announced today that they are releasing the new Advanced Messaging capabilities to about a dozen devices, presumably the G3 is one of them. The features would include read receipts, seeing when others are typing, sharing high-res photos and videos, near real-time chat, and support across any device and network.
I haven't looked at anything about it yet, but I assume that it shouldn't be too difficult to port it over to the G3. It is likely just some APN modifications and a couple APKs and files.
I cant wait
Subscribing just in case the apk magically appears here, I've hunted high and low for it even on Galaxy Grand Prime T-Mobile demo phones and trying to update them and still see nothing but messages app.
Just a update...

Some other user said that on the XDA Article just paraphrasing them, I believe Falcon has intentions of doing so, but right now it's still just a newborn baby it hasn't even gotten wide spread yet, RCS that is but it's barely even on one major phone right now. So we still got a good way to go first.
I really do hope RCS-SMS Messaging takes lead, for my friends who don't use messengers like FBIM or Kik and WhatsApp, I honestly hate using the painfully slow old and outdated sms, waiting nearly 30 mins sometimes for one sms to get delivered is ridiculous to me and due for a change.

So I have installed the update and did some quick benchmarks before and after the update. Interesting results. So naturally the benchmarks that happened in the morning were before I installed the update and the ones in the afternoon were after I installed the update.
As for the battery benchmark, I simply ran each test for 1 hour 10 minutes. So yea, the new update provided better battery performance but worse single core... by a little. Multi-core was a tad better with the new update. This of course is not all inclusive results, as I only ran one benchmark, and that has no indication of real-life performance. If I don't notice anything drastic in the next few days, I won't post anything else here, otherwise I will keep you posted.

I ran geekbench yesterday and did not see any real difference in singlecore or multicore performance (both +- about 5 points difference to last firmware).
Auto-brightness works much better now. Also it looks like "GPS icon staying forever" bug is gone for me.
Smart lock option is empty in my sony Xperia xz1? What should I do?
EDIT:
I was able to find the answer here: Yes, I would continue to receive OTA updates for the currently installed firmware.
Original question:
Having purchased the XZ1C in the USA, if I were to flash the ...12.75 Customised DE (for instance), would I no longer receive subsequent OTA updates? Thanks.
Hello
Update installed this evening (French time).
Good news, the update file is only 112Mo to download OTA.
some new functionalities:
contact shortcuts have a small contact icon
URL shorcut looks like a Windows shorcut, with a small black Arrow at the bottom.
I have to test more now.

Disable Smart Lock (Google) in Trust agents, reboot, enable again. Should make Smart Lock available again, but it may (probably will) go blank again.

Someone just say "Adoptable storage" or ability to move to SD card and it will be okay for me to never update my phone again!
On reboot, persistent GPS icon will not appear until certain applications make use of GPS-based location services (don't know which ones at this point). If the persistent GPS icon does appear, you cannot get rid of it until you reboot. I understand Sony is working on a fix.

The Kernel hasn't been updated in this release at all.
With this new firmware, I'm havin a weird problem.
Every time I reboot, the stock Sony weather widget needs to set location, EVERYTIME.
Is it just me...?
FWIW, No problems with Sony weather app setting location on my phone.
+1
No problems with the weather app here
Thanks!

Great! It worked for me. Thanks!
I wanted to try a different firmware, because of this bug...
Anyone else having problems with the stock clock app? It force closes when I try to open it (only on this firmware). The lockscreen clock and upper right corner of the status bar are unaffected - it's just the app that includes the alarm, timer, stopwatch, etc. I've worked around it by just using Timely for my alarm and stopwatch needs, but it would be nice to have the stock clock working.
No problem for me.
I just got the XZ1 (new from eBay), it had 47.1.A.2.313, I've updated to 47.1.A.12.34, looks good so far, and, this is Android 8.0.0.
I know there is at least one more update, perhaps the 47.1.A.12.75 mentioned in this thread. Is that Android 9.0.0?
I'll update to that, but not now, I'm using my phone. Is there any big change to the latest version?
This is my first Sony phone, since I used a Sony-Ericsson a long time ago.

[HELP] Do you recommend updating my phone?

I bought a Galaxy s9, a couple of weeks ago and the next update came:
G900ZHU2ARE6 / G9600OWA2ARE6 / G9600ZCU2ARE6
my question is, is it advisable to update it? or I wait for Android P?
Currently I have the G9600ZHU1ARBG version
Of course update it

Just curious, but why do you think it's not ok to update. I've seen very few if any problems with an official update.
I just did the update and I regret it so much. First of all, dozens of my apps don't work anymore. Most noticeably - Swipe Keyboard and Coinbase Wallet. Besides that, I can't apply custom themes from themeGalaxy anymore because the demo themes are limited to 10 minutes of use now. Good Lock refuses to work as well and I hate the new Quick settings and task window. Also getting random crashes on every other app now. My phone is entirely stock and not rooted. All in all, awful experience for me.

That was my initial thought. Luckily I managed to fix the app crashing issue (my custom launcher design was at fault). However, I had to revert to the standard theme and I'm not a fan of the new non-customizable task changer and notification bar. I'll learn to live with those, I guess. It's pointless to stay at an older Android version for such minor reasons.

Overall it is a huge upgrade over Oreo, few changes to adjust to but as is the way with updates, personally I prefer the new task changer and so on now, while weirdly when using Goodlock on Oreo I hated that design and always left it as stock
Update G9600
Go to Setup / update / manual update / search for update
The phone is loading the official Samsung S9 G9600 update.
(every month between 10 and 15 has an update)
In January promised update to Android PIE official.

My issues with the task changer are the fact that you can't swipe the apps down anymore (it now opens them instead of dismissing) and the inability of leaving the task changer by simply tapping the background. It just disrupts my "workflow" and I'm getting annoyed by it every single time. Oh, and I'm always locking my chat apps but now the unlock button is in the lower right corner of the app card, which is where my thumb usually sits when I scroll through - I'm constantly unlocking the app instead of switching to it.
But I'll get used to it, I guess.

I don't lock chat apps, and if I am closing recents, I just close them all using the "Close All" button anyway so that doesn't really bother me, just took a bit of time to get used to swiping side to side instead of up and down to scroll through them, but while I was running one of the beta's of Pie the close all button was missing so I got used to swiping up to close them anyway, like you say you adjust over time

That's my problem. Swiping up and down seems normal and about half the time I swipe up and close the app window. I believe someone suggested it and it got the standard canned response.

Can say the same here, feels sluggish. I updated it to Pie after hearing great stuff from others.
I'll see if clearing app data of most apps makes any difference.
On the official beta I'm not seeing any sluggishness at all but I do see others on it complaining about it.

Question Photos crashing and weather widget unresponsive..

So for the first time I wanted to use the eraser tool to find the entire photos app just crashes. Anyone else?
Not only this but the large weather widget is still unresponsive to opening Google weather.
Getting pretty sick of the constant botches that seem to be happening with my 6pro. They barely fixed the poor cell signal issue.
No crashing with Google Photos or editing for me - use them both every day. But yes, the large weather widget is still unresponsive. No other issues for me, though. Luckily, I use Weawow for my main home screen's weather widget - so configurable with transparent widgets and all the info I need without clicking on it most of the time. I only use two other weather widgets on alternate home screens to see if there's a consensus between different weather services.

I have no Photos update available for me in the Play Store - manually checked to be sure. I'm on 5.75.0.424739917. Are you signed up for their Beta program of Google Photos? Magik Eraser is working on mine without a crash. If you are signed up in their Beta program, maybe you should leave it, although it won't "downgrade" the app version immediately.
Also, tried rebooting?

Had Google phones every two years since Nexus 4 and the 6pro has been the most buggy and annoying of the lot.

Does your Google large weather widget also fail to open Google weather? This is again another bug since a recent update.
Google have rolled out am update for Photos again and looks like it's fixed.
The broken large weather widget remains however despite an update rolled out for the Google app there.

I wonder how an obvious bug like this get's through QA. Does Google even have a QA department? I mean this is not a minor bug, it's a massive, app breaking bug that renders a central function of the phone (magic eraser is one of the prime features of the P6) inoperable. Imagine a car manufacturer making an update and forgetting to check if the doors can still be opened. lmao
