[Q] Anyone considering returning the E4GT due to bad battery life?

I am one of the unfortunate souls who is experiencing terrible battery life due to the AndroidOS bug. I feel like I spend half my waking hours trying to figure out what is causing it and doing different things to my phone improve my battery life.
I'm definitely getting sick of it and while I realize that Samsung/Sprint may eventually come out with a software update that fixes the problem, I'm not sure I'm willing to wait since it could take months (and the issue was supposedly fixed for GS2 phones in 2.3.4).
At this point, I'm considering going back to the Moto Photon--it's battery life is simply amazing. My only issue with the Moto is its unusable camera.
Anyone else getting as frustrated as I am and considering jumping ship to another phone?

What have you done to fix it?
Are you saying that you still have the bug even aftera factory reset ?

Why not just take it back and have them give you a new one since you obviously have a defective phone?
Also how many hours are you actually getting out of the battery?
I don't see any other phone worth switching to and I have had them all. Each with their own specific problem. But this one here is as good as it gets

I've tried just about everything that has been mentioned in the AndroidOS/battery life thread (reset, wifi, autosync) but I'm still getting only 12 hours of battery life on a good day, 8 hours on a bad day
I might try exchanging the phone, but I'm hesitant to do so due to the LOS bug (I have not experienced this with my phone as of yet).
Honestly, while I love the phone in many other ways, I'm about to throw the thing out the window since 8 hours of battery life is simply not acceptable to me

That doesn't mean anything to me. What's the display on time? How good/bad is the cellular signal?

Exchange it bro. Ive had two of these phones so far and none had this problem. I'm getting like 24-30 hours battery with like 4-5 hours screen on time. This phone had awesome battery. Download an apps called better battery stats. This will show wakelocks and processes that are draining the battery. Good luck man.

On a good day, the display is on for less than 30-45 min. On a bad day, the phone display time is somewhere between 90-120 minutes.

I pulled 16 hours ojt of my battery yesterday with over 12 on wifi and i was at 40 percent. I have to use wifi at work as i have no signal and when i do get signal its roaming. I would say that my conditions at work are far from ideal but this phone is great. My old phone would die before 1130(evo shift).

Yeah bro that's awful. I would take that back immediately. There is no sense in that. U definitely have a bug in that phone. Good luck.

mine doesn't seem to get the android os bug unless i'm on a custom kernel. 1 week stock, no problems, 3 days on custom problems each day, back to stock + root and no problems for 48 hrs.
i still have to be 100% sure that my phone didn't like the kernel though so another test will be coming up after a few more days of observation.

I had the issue with the stock kernel and custom kernels. I'm just going to hold out until we can get a AOSP build and hope that using as little of Samsung's code fixes it.

I'm on stock and have nothing out of the ordinary installed. Out of curiosity, do you have a google account with full sync turned on?

Lol 8 12 hours isn't bad with a stock battery and 4.5 inch screen. If you are in a poor reception area it could be that. Otherwise you have alot of Apps running in the background.
My advice : root it and extended battery.

I average 15-20 hours easily on a charge, with a full sync google account
Everything Sync'd Listed below:
- Google+ Notifications
- Music
- Books
- Contacts
- Gmail
- Picasa Web Albums
- Calendar
If anything else can be Sync'd I have not run across it. I also have my Tapatalk set to notify me of PM's, and updates to Subscribed topics, I removed the accuweather widget because it only updates every 3 hours and installed Weatherbug Elite and set it to update every 30 minutes. On top of all that I browse the web regularly to visit sites that are websense'd at work, and I play dungeon hunter 2, and asphalt 6 on my lunch break. At home the phone sits on my desk until its time to pass out, only used for my Rift Mobile authenticator.

Why does the bug seem to affect the gs2 more than other phones? For example, I've never seen it mentioned on the photon forums

i use my phone a lot while im at school throughout the day , i last using wifi and 3g, and if needed i can do a quick charge while i study in the car but i lasted to 60% using 3g for a few hours

Overheating --> Network/Device Lag? Marshmallow, M9

I know my way around Android well enough I could probably teach a class. I've been excited for the Marshmallow update for my Verizon M9, mostly for the security update. Now I've got it, and udderly hate it. Not only is this marshmallow über soft and squishy, it's somehow managed to swallow the majority of my CPU--much like BOB from Monsters vs Aliens. Actually, the update is more like BOB than a delicious couple of calories. Tremendous lag from god knows where, constant freezing and other **** when in hpm--whether it be plugged in or not--which often crashes apps altogether or causes a reboot, keyboard latency of about 1.5seconds, network disconnecting when the device exceeds 120℉, ooh!, and the cherry on top: loss of data. I use my phone for both business/class-related stuff and for gaming/pleasure(shh, creeps) because I'm too broke to buy anything else. The front-facing speakers get glitcy and doing that pausing crap like when you drive outta radio range in a car. This was never a problem with Lollipop, but is making Android a living hell to deal with. MHL has yet to work on Marshmallow, and instead simply crashes the phone. Again. Can't find ANYthing ANYwhere about this. Both Verizon and HTC are refusing to talk to me directly about it; keep getting passed to the next rep, who tries to put me through their template of troubleshooting steps. Wiping cache partition worked...for all of ten minutes. If that. HTC wants to take my phone for two weeks, which won't work due to classes.
Full stock M9. I use App Mgr III for new moving apps quickly, App Cache Cleaner because I'm lazy, and Greenify to kill some stuff that I've got, e.g., Ingress, Skype, snapchat. Greenify does NOT allow killing of bloatware/pre-installed crap, so let me tape the mouths of those twits shut now. Most pre-installed apps, including all but two of the Verizon things, are disabled.
The game I notice the most trouble on is Walking War Robots, can't tell if it has to do with graphics or the processor itself. Chrome browser is quite laggy; Drive is almost unresponsive as is Docs; have lost quite a bit of data from Microsoft Word, both saved and documents being worked on. Reception is also quite a bit worse with the Marshmallow update, calls being dropped more frequently and location often having trouble pinpointing me on high-accuracy.
As I do NOT have a computer, reseting the device is not an option. The recaptcha thingy took almost 30 seconds to load; on Lollipop, they took less than five.

I fully agree with you. My experience with marshmallow has only been negative so far.
1) Incredibly Laggy. Back in the day, installing a kitkat or lollipop rom, the phone would be super fluid and would only slightly lag when installing the 50 apps. God forbid when I was installing marshmallow it seriously hung like 5 seconds and was going at maximum 10fps.
2) Heat. The phone appears to get even warmer now. How is that even possible?
3) Battery Life. My battery appears to be 10% worse. I used to only charge it at night but now I have to charge it after work around 8pm.
I do have some hope though. I'm waiting for Neo or Santod to compile a debloated rom and hoping that clears up these issues.

I was experiencing terrible lag, it seems to be settling down now. I was overheating, but that seems to have settled as well. Biggest problem is that I'm only charging at 550mA with a 2A quick charger. That's new, and totally unacceptable. Also, HTC emojis are gone. All I have are the stupid jellybean/potato looking guys and I can't decipher which emotion they are trying to relay. Chics dig emojis, and here I am feeling emoji blind.

In the same boat.. this update is not good. This phone is so laggy and slow now it's like my OG Droid 1 from years ago. Cleared cache after installing.. waited the obligatory 45 minutes to rebuild stuff. Uninstalled the bloatware I could and it literally took minutes to do a simple uninstall. Hasn't got any better in the last day at all. If it doesn't get better in the next day or two I'll have to go back to Lollipop. This is probably the most buggy, laggy, battery killing Android update I've seen on any of my Android phones since Droid 1 days. Anyone else getting this or know of any kind of fix? I just can't imagine HTC and VZW pushed this out if problems like these are a common occurrence.

So ViperROM just put out version 4.3.0.
I always thought ViperROM was some weird bloated ROM with weird features so i never gave it a go, but its basically a slimmed down HTC SENSE with a small amount of tweaks. My phone is BUTTERY smooth now. =)

Yeah, I've thought about pulling the trigger w/ Venom rom but I wanted to stay just stock rooted on my M9. If you install viper rom do you have to factory reset? I just despise doing that so much and don't want to if I don't have to. If it doesn't get better in the next day or two, I'll probably give viper a go with a full wipe.
On a side note, is this a fairly common issue with this update and the M9?? Some are saying in the other thread theirs is nice and smooth.

I was having many heat/lag issues as described above when I flashed the zip dirty or clean. I had to do a RUU with the MM update. Now it's super smooth. Still get lots of heat when the system is booting up for the first time/settling in. But after that, no issues.

how is everyone's battery with this? Mine is absolutely horrible! Just this morning sitting here.. 3 hours, down to 78% already and haven't even done anything very intensive with it. Few messages on Whatsapp, texts, a picture. This phone sucks right now. Yesterday only lasted about 10 hours with normal use. Before I would get at least a normal day out of it without worrying. What the hell is going on with MM that is sucking the life out of this phone?

Yea you will have to root. The thing is, Venom is literally a STOCK rooted M9 that has all bloat cut away and 1 small app for additional features (like changing status bar and power button for flashlight.). It is well worth it.

Try Venom Rom. I had so many issues with Verizon MM that I gave up on it.

I've also had better luck with Venom. I just flashed it about 8 hours ago but the lag is gone (so far). Charging on a quick charger still sucks. Haven't been able to gauge battery life yet. No overheating.
Update: My battery is discharging at -1650mA.

Keep checking. It shouldn't be discharging that much unless your tethering on full brightness

It spikes and dips. On average it drains around around 600-800mA. No tethering, 50% brightness. Never had this issue til M. Crazy.

I just tested mine on Venom and with around 25 percent brightness using Facebook on WiFi I'm getting 250mA drain MAX

Guys, I finally did do the factory reset despite how much I hate having to do that. From both inside android, and from within TWRP just to be sure. It made the world of difference. I know having to re-install and set up all your apps is a huge pain the ass, but it seriously made a huge difference. Mine lasted 1 day, 13 hours with my typical usage and was still at like 9-10% I think when I re-charged it. Everything is back to working really smooth, no lag, and no heating issues. Something left over from before doesn't play nice at all with the new ROM. Hope this might help if you guys decide to stay on stock.

Question i have went to the Viper website and i can not find the 4.3 rom just able to download 4.2 please tell me where am i going wrong thanks?

Mmmm, but my original post was about the M9. Not the M8. They're similar, but the M8 has a superior processor. Imo it'd be amaz to have my custom (and unfortunately shattered) M8's processors and RAM in my M9. Fix all these issues. But, alas.....

In scale, that prolly equates to about 70% of my normal day, minus gaming. Right now I'm getting through about 30% of my day, minus gaming, before needing a charge. Even with QC, charging takes about 40% longer than it did on Lollipop.
Still neither factory reset nor rooting is an option, as I have nothing to back my stuff up on. No, the local library isn't kind enough to me for that lol.

Hi, does anyone know how to fix android system battery drain, i had this since i upgraded to android n and im on oxygen os 4.0.3

Nope.. How is your SoT? How much power does Android system consume? Mine is 403mAh after 4h SoT. As I can see it is not ridiculous high.

That flat line is without airplane mode. WiFi everything on. I found it pretty decent.

I also have the same issue. Since upgraing to nougat andeoid system drain has always been high even on custom roms although not as high as oos. And yeah based on my usage i too get an sot of 4 hours whereas i used to get 5 hours on similar usage on marshmallow.

Battery has seen a big hit since Nougat. Wish I did not update. I can barely get 3h SoT.

I was facing same problem after update... Android OS was eating hell lots of battery.. ive installed custom rom nw my cell us working damn good

Have you tried wiping caches? Letting battery go to absolute zero. Then charging without turning phone off?

I have no interest in doing any such maintenance things. Which is a strange thing to be saying on these boards, I know

I started having issues with the OS using an unusually high amount of power a week ago. I was using EX kernel and manager. I didn't change anything, but I don't morning my phone was noticeably warm and the battery was draining very quickly. I tried a few different OOS based rom/kernel combinations. Anytime I install a custom kernel or even any apps that provide kernel tweaking options (even if I never open them), the issues return. The small cores rarely dip below 1190 MHz and the big cores stay at 1478mhz or higher. It sleeps normally when the screen is off. The only way to get lower speeds with screen on is to set max lower than that, then they just stay maxed out and everything lags. I tried with fresh installs and even went back to ext4. It's strange, as I'd been using the same Experience rom/EX kernel setup for quite some time when the issue arose. Now I'm still on Experience, but with stock kernel and no tweaking apps, and I'm back to 5+hrs SOT.

So you'll complain but not do anything to try and fix it. All phones have problems eventually. Just like cars. They all require maintenance.

You expect aunts and uncles and mother and fathers to mess with wiping cache in their phones?
That's insane.
OP3 have themselves said "flagship killer" which means it0s intended for the same audience as GS7 and such phones. So no friking tinkering. it has to just work.
That being said, i'm still happy with my OP3 and Nougat overall. But battery life is somewhat worse.

I don't think it's insane. I know a lot of technologically capable older folk. They're definitely the minority xD but seriously, that does not change the fact you came on here, complained about batt life, see things that could improve it that are extremely simple, but won't do it. Leave the aunts and uncles out of you not wanting to do maintenance.
In my experience, I've seen every single phone had problems iPhones every generation, flagship Samsung DEFINITELY, ZTE, etc. I don't think any phone automatically "just works." At the same time, while my note 4 was running at an ambient temperature of 60°C on a daily basis, I've had friends who have faced identical problems and never had their phone get hot. No phone is perfect.
My mom jailbroke our iPhone 3 and 4. When we went to Android, she knew how root and remove bloatware a full year before i did. She's a City bus driver. So i don't think counting out my elders is quite fair. I was introduced to OnePlus by someone well over 55. Back when it was the invite system lol.
These experiences may or may not be considered anecdotal, but i am very happy to hear you still enjoy your OnePlus 3 man.

Very disappointed to buy a HTC 10, and some questions

Good afternoon to all, I hope you can help me with this situation.
I have 20 days with the HTC 10, and I can not be more disappointed of its performance, and coming from a galaxy s6, but we go by parts.
1- the phone, it gets very hot, very fast, especially after updating to nougat 7, I mean, with 15 20 minutes of surfing on the web, it reaches temperatures between 40-44 C ° (104-111 F °) , At this temperature it is uncomfortable to hold. Is this normal ??
Taking into account that I do not play, I only watch videos, I listen to music and web, because I just did a hard reset, which brings us to point 2.
2 - It is the first time, I update an android version, and a big error appears, once updated to android 7, the keyboard stopped working (swiftkey), so I could not access it because it was protected By password, and the keyboard in the start section, never displayed. I had to do a hard reset with only 15 days of use, seriously WTF!
3- Due to the warm up, the battery life is quite poor (between 3.5 and 4 hours of screen, no play, or take pictures all day, turning off mobile data at times and wifi, is this battery drain normal?
The battery come to exhaust quickly, especially when the phone is very hot, when restarting the phone, it eats 3-5% of battery every time.
When taking photos the same, the battery drops very quickly.
4- I normally play on a PC at 60 fps, the phone when playing video on youtube, has a slight lag or "stuttering", this jumps out at me very easily, although there are people who do not see it at all, I do by The same as I mentioned earlier.
When playing video youtube on the phone, the camera movements are not smooth, there are micro-cuts to the FPS, and it is very annoying.
5- before upgrading to android 7, just install a game, "realm defense, hero legends", a very popular game on android, and felt like it was under 30fps all the time, my previous galaxy s6 handled this very smooth,
6- Points 4 and 5 are solved by activating the "high performance" option in the menu of developers, the lag in the videos disappears completely, and the games feel very good, but with the consequent increase in battery usage and Temperature, seriously WTF again.
The phone according to CPUZ has a load of 15-35% all the time without loading any application, this is normal in andrid 7 ??
The phone is in stock status, with the update of the operator, I have no ROM installed, and I have no idea how to do it, because I would not like to lose the warranty.

No these are not normal. Obviously something is running around causing the CPU usage and eating the battery. Given how many problems you're having I would do a factory reset, see how it goes without installing any apps. If things get better that'll help your pinpoint the troublesome app(s). If not, a replacement is in order.

I do not know what to have, I have a hardreset for 4 days and I have not installed many apps yet, and it has these problems.

I'll second that, although I've only used mine for about six months. I do admit that running Android 6 the phone did seem to get hotter than it does with Android 7.
That being said, when I'm running a game battery life does suck, and it does get warm. I think I'm about 5 to 6 hours of screen on time, but I'm also bone stock with a bunch of extra apps in the background.

I have HTC 10 for one year and several days, never had those issues.
I admit HTC storage r&w speed is slower than S6 because of emmc5.1, but mine is smooth enough.
I also recognized the battery life is shorter on Android 7.0, but it's a general issue for phones upgraded to this version of Android...Not just HTC10, Sony, Samsung etc also has this problem.
As for SwiftKey stopped working, I have no such an issue, in fact I'm a mod of SwiftKey.
At last for the temperature, mine gets 38 °C while fast charging; 42°C is max while playing heavy games.

Mine gets 40°C Without doing anything, and playing reaches 44-45 °
And it seems ridiculous, that when doing this app can not with the 60fps, for a little ball in 2D.

Sorry, I should clarify...
I've had the phone for about 7-8 months now (longer than I originally thought, got it back in September of last year...) and got the update to nougat about 4 months ago.
When the phone was running marshmallow, it would get warm while working on tasks that aren't CPU/GPU intensive. With the update to nougat, it definitely helped with the heat production. That's not to say it doesn't get warm... If I'm playing Rayman Classic on full brightness, that phone gets really REALLY warm. But when playing Deus Ex - The Fall, even on high brightness, it doesn't get uncomfortably warm like when playing Rayman. Also, basic tasks don't overheat the phone like they would on MM.
I should note that I typically leave power saver turned on as well. I've found it doesn't affect performance noticeably for myself. I've also had Boost+ optimise all foreground apps from the overheating nightmare on MM, and I hadn't bothered to turn it off... These could play into the heat production of my phone as well...
My time with this awesome phone has been so short due to my contract with my former service provider...

I think most of your issues will get resolved after installing Custom Rom. Infact I am in similar situation like you. I can't root my phone due to warranty. As i know for fact that in my country HTC charge huge amount of money even for small issue. After spending that much money on repair, there is no guarantee that phone will work fine cause engineers are not capable enough, maybe cost cutting by HTC. Meanwhile i would suggest select SRGB instead of Vivid display, it will surely reduce heating problem to some extent.

Question Phone Overheating - Is There a Fix?

I'm on Android 13 and was hoping this would sort out the overheating problem I had with Android 12 (I read in a few places that it would), but it did not. The phone gets very warm when charging, and hot when streaming video, and just generally through simple use, nothing particularly demanding. I haven't rooted this phone because I did not see the need, but I would consider it if it was the only way to fix the problem. Is anyone experiencing the same, and does anyone have a solution?

I could be wrong but generally speaking in my experience, going from one major upgrade to another the phone works a bit harder to re-train itself to your use patterns. I just did my upgrade yesterday and experienced some slight to moderate heat as well. I also noticed that battery is draining a bit faster which I think again is part of the process. I'm going to give it a week or so and if I'm right it should improve.

I'm biased because I've had my Pixel 6 Pro rooted (and updated every month) since last November, and I also use Kirisakura custom kernel with its companion apps and currently have the one app set to the maximum battery savings.
So I can't really compare to 100% stock unrooted with the stock kernel, as I'm only briefly on the stock unrooted kernel each month after I manually flash the latest update.
Several others have commented, and I've experienced too, that with Android 13, we've no longer experienced as severe higher temperatures when charging. I don't remember if the others were rooted and using the same custom kernel, or if these were general Android 13 comments, so your mileage may vary. Sorry I can't give you any more concrete information.

Granted this is for my 4a5g but I wouln't be suprised if/when I get a 6 that its battery performance would be less than stellar after a good days use of phone and/or screen and radio/network. i.e. stock. Before I went to Lineage on my 4a5g I think my battery would cut a good 30-50+ percent each day. I put lineage on it and I poop you not, can go from a 75% to around 20% in about 5-6+ days. I tend to have my screen brightness around a little less than 1/4th on the slider bar.
When I had an HTC M8, after around 2 or so years (this was around 2016/7 or so. got phone oct '14) on the stock firmware the phone couln't keep it on for more than a day. Ran ViperRom for a bit then switched to cm/lineage and that stretched my usability of the phone another 5 years. It got to the point where the phone would shut off when it got to around %50 charge and go ding dong and turn off--without pluggin it in I had about 8 hours run time on it. My battery was beyond gone and no way would I have gotten that usability on the stock rom.
So, to answer your question, yes, trying different roms and kernels (rooting) could be to your advantage to prolong the life and performance of your phone.
Even if you choose to run the stock OS, with root, you could disble any bloat running in background. Kill any programs/services leeching CPU (and hence battery) cycles. You could definately make it run more efficient for YOU. Maybe not for the next guy who needs his facebook, twitter, ticktok apis and stuff loaded and at the ready. Everyone is different. But they tend to make the phones (they think) for everyone. in mind and as a result, device performance and lifespan become affected.

I definitely have heating issues and this is on a warranty exchange. The 2 previous P6Ps had all the same issues as this current device.

My phone was hot on A12 (41/45°) and since i clean flashed A13 and wiped it is cold (32/35°) for the same usage.

I have bought this phone a day before. I'm facing device heating even under simple tasks like scrolling messengers, browsing etc.
Previously I had OnePlus 7 Pro (Snapdragon 855), that one was cold all time except while charging or playing games.
However, Pixel looks warm or even hot even upon light using.
I'm a bit confused about that.
Is it a common problem of this device? Or probably exactly my device is affected?
I haven't faced overheating or alerts about that, however, it feels hot for my hands that got used to feel a cold phone while low load.
Currently, I have about 37-38 degrees while browsing on XDA and writing this post.

I did a warranty exchange on my P6P for a different issue and I'm glad I did. My replacement device has much better thermals than my original. My original one would get quite hot while charging and restoring apps and was almost uncomfortable to hold and to the touch. Could always try a warranty exchange and see if the replacement device is better for you. Also, Kiri kernel has been reported to help with the thermals. I've seen several reports of users commenting that their device runs cooler. Good luck!

I had heating issues and battery issues when I first received my P6P. Once I got it out of the box, I set it up and restored backups, rooted it, updated to android 13 without wiping, rooted again, and then flashed the Kirisakura kernel. I decided to try and flash android 13 again but keeping the -w flag to wipe userdata and didnt restore my backups and I've had amazing battery life and no overheating. If you haven't yet, try doing a factory reset. As simple as it sounds it may very well help

My fully stock P6P (on A12) gave an overheat warning yesterday while we were having a day out, it was only 22°C although we were in and out of the sun as the clouds rolled by but the phone was showing 46°C after being sat in my pocket.
I think Google have released the worlds hottest running phone, i have never owned a phone that heats up so much and so fast.

Thing is I have never experienced overheating on any phone (that i have owned) in UK before, using an Exynos as the basis of Tensor and then whacking an extra big core in it was a pretty bad idea unless you live in a fridge.
