I have a OBD2 Hotspot from ATT called the Harman Spark.
My issue with it is that after 30 minutes of the vehicle not running the hotspot shuts down. Is there a way to simulate the vehicle running or an adapter i can make? Possibly a software hack?
Bump
I have this device as well. Fyi it has a sim.
I was able to remove the AT&T sim card and test it in a t-mobile sync up and drive device. It asks for an unlock code when you navigate to its router IP address. Tmobile would not provide one stating it's not unlockable as it only works with there app. If I could unlock the device it would essentially work as a hot spot that plugs into the obd2. I've yet to try the sim in any other devices.
Unlimited internet my butt. I have to be breaking the law to use it. Anyone wanna be my shofer driver so I can use my internets?

heya,
i use use cardexportII to convert my P3300 into an USB flash disk. and on their web they got win98 drivers in case you want to connect it on an older system.
ok, so i wanted to know:
is there any way, a software or whatever, to connect my P3300 to an existing wifi, plug it with USB to a computer and the computer use it as wifi-adapter/access point to use that network?
i've read about people trying something like that but using bluetooth rather than USB to connect the mobile to the PC, i can use that too if you know how, but in the end what i really need is:
PC->USB->P3300->WIFI NETWORK
because i allways carry a little usb cable with me, and i don't want to carry an BT dongle around if i can avoid it.
and as we are at it, but not really important for me... would it be possible to convert my P3300 to a bluetooth dongle?
PC->USB->P3300->BT NETWORK/DEVICES
oh BTW, my P3300 has WM6 (official HTC release)
thx in advance for any help.
OH LOL, forgot to mention: all this WITHOUT ACTIVESYNC please.
not possible then?
For security reasons the device does not allow simultaneous USB and WiFi connections.

if i am not wrong, i have read somewhere it was possible to share a WIFI connection through BT or viceversa... so why would USB not be possible, when it's even more secure than BT?
i am getting a little sick of microsoft and their "security" crap... first they disable activesync over wifi and now this? did they never hear of VPN or the like?
/sigh

You can share the phone's GPRS connection, not WiFi. This is so you can use the device as a modem for your laptop etc.
You can not use bluetooth or WiFi when you have a USB connection because you could use it to hook up to two different networks at once, one with the USB cable and one with the WiFi. And then move data across the two networks. Which is a network security risk.
That risk would deter customers from buying the device as it could be used as a back door into the network. An employee plugs into the corporate network with the device (which is 'trusted' and has no password required) then an accomplice connects WiFi to the device and has free entry.
A USB wireless dongle can be bought for £10. Perhaps using that to set up an ad-hock network could be a solution for you?

where did you get all this info, that it is not possible due security reasons? as you mention, i could use a wifi dongle. and if i wanted to "hack" a network, i could use a laptop connected to a wired lan, and use it's wifi or a wifi dongle to do EXACTLY the same, so the security excuse (wherever you read it) is total bull****.
i want this, because i could just carry a wifi dongle in my bag, but if i could do it with the p3300 usb cable i always carry around, i would have one item less to worry around.
i really don't get all this security nonsense... in first place it needs a wep or wpa key to even connect to a wifi and in second place it's nothing i could not do with a laptop already, i don't understand the fuzz.
i asked the same thing on a microsoft mobile developer blog and the guy just started evading my questions and not responding at all.
You can share a 3G network to a laptop via an HTC Touch Pro2 but, near as I can tell, you can't share a Wi-Fi connection? ie. if my laptop doesn't, itself, have a Wi-Fi connection, can I use my cellphone's Wi-Fi connectivity to connect to a Wi-Fi network?

I think that he's wanting to use the phone as a wifi adapter (i.e. wireless NIC) for his laptop, rather than using the phone as a wifi router. In other words...his laptop does't have built-in wifi at all, so he wants to use his phone to accomplish that rather than an external USB stick, card, etc. I've been curious for a while if that's even possible, but haven't come across any methods yet...

That's exactly it. Most places I go to have ethernet cables I can plug into but, from time to time, I find myself at a place that just has 802.11b/g access points. Rather than carry a PCMCIA wireless adapter around with me so that I might use it once every blue moon, I'd just assume use something I already have on me - my cellphone - as a wireless adapter.
Alternatively, if I, at a future date, got a laptop with a built in wireless adapter, it'd still be nice to be able to have two wireless adapters. ie. maybe the 802.11g network I'm connecting to uses WPA and I'm trying to connect with a Nintendo DS that only supports WEP networks. I could, in theory, use my cell phone as an adapter to the WPA network and turn my laptop into a WEP access point.
I'd say there are several use cases for being able to use a cellphone as an adapter to an 802.11g network, although I will grant that they're probably fairly niche use cases.
I am also interested in this as it would allow me to use my laptop for free internet at places like starbucks where my Tilt 2 gets to connect for free.
Internet>>> ATT Wifi >>> Tilt 2 >>>> Laptop
I too would love this functionality. If anyone knows of an app/registry hack/whatever that enables this, please post the details here.

WMWifiRouter (not free) has this functionality. Along with the standard features like cellular to WiFi and cellular to USB, WMWifiRouter also does more exotic connections like WiFi to USB. It's €15, but it's an application with a lot of functionality and the developer who created it is a very highly respected XDA member, who provides many of his other products for free.

Awesome, thanks Dave. I'd been thinking about buying it anyway in place of the (very basic) free wifi router app I found on here too, and now it sounds like a no-brainer
Just did it
I just did this very setup earlier with my HTC Tilt 2. I had the phone connected to my Wi-Fi network, and turned off my Wi-Fi on my laptop. Connected the phone to the laptop using the USB cable, and selected "Use as modem" and it was an automatic process...i'm running Windows 7 on my laptop..if that helps..it just worked.
Hi,
I'm stuck for a while without internet access except via 3G. I've got a dev phone running the Mango beta 2.
I was wondering if anyone had an idea about how I could make a proxy server or any other kind of tethering for it.
I was looking to use HttpListener or Sockets.Listen but both are unavailable for the phone.
I thought I might have to make a server application for the laptop that has a proxy server listening port and a phone listening port then have an application on the phone that connects to the server app. Once established, pass requests on from the laptop app to the phone app and get the phone to do the requests.
Unfortunately, my knowledge of how to do this over sockets is limited and if anyone could give me some advice I'd be grateful.
Cheers
Depending on which phone you have it might be possible to switch into teethering mode in the MFG app (usually installed by dialing ##634#).
HTC 7 Trophy .. I'm not aware of a way to use tethering on that.

Do you have a old Windows mobile 6.5 device sitting around ? Then for the temp window you need it, switch ESN/SIM to your 6.5 device, wi-fi teather, then swap back ESN/SIM when you need it...
Depending on your carrier....I know with Verizon, I can change hardware on-line
I'm unaware of how the network stack works in WP7.
If you're connected to WiFi, in your application can you choose to use 3G or WiFi? Maybe there are some P/Invoke calls you could do?
If so, then connect your phone to a router ... same with your laptop. Then relay HTTP(S) between the two connections.
Otherwise, we'll need to be able to execute native applications.
Im pretty tech savy just dont want to brick my phone and explore endless threads that dont have my info. I just upgraded from a factory unlocked note 8 that had this working and when I transferred tasker my Note 10 it asked me to ADB connect it. I'd be willing to pay some one $20 paypal to guide me through the steps....
Just use bixby routines. It's super easy and works for me (I use it to turn on hotspot when it connects to my cars bluetooth).
I would like my phone to turn on hotspot when it connects to my "uconnect" bluetooth, then turn off the hotspot (turn on wifi) when I disconnect. Is that something ... This time I'm super excited to unlock the full power of your device's sensors!. Sign up for the ... Tasker is also getting a new Dialog, the Text Dialog.
Good afternoon,
(Before we begin, I have searched the forum (and the Googles) and found no answers. While this doesn't mean I'm perfect at searching, if anyone can find this quickly, I'd still appreciate being pointed in the right direction. And all snarky comments will be accepted with a grimace and some self-deprecating humor at my expense).
Does anyone know a work around or a way to enable bluetooth tethering on SM-N975U from ATT? We have the unlimted elite plan with 30 GB hotspots enabled on each of our 6 lines, but for some reason ATT decided to neuter how I choose to connect my hotspots. I called and complained, got bumped up to tier 3 support and no one feels like helping. You would think paying $450 a month for service and phones would warrant at least a solution but no, they said suck it.
I have an android auto radio in my truck and I just want to get into the car, and drive, not have to stop, pull out my phone, turn on the hotspot and wait. Is that so [email protected] much to ask ATT???
Anyways, anyone have a solution for this besides using an NFC tag stuck somewhere in my truck, buying a new phone or getting a dedicated hotspot?
Thanks!!
Chad
You mean wifi tethering? That's how you tether it to other phones and computers.
You need a password from AT&T to set it up.
Pretty straight forward even with older laptops and phones.
Once done it works pretty well.

Not quite, bluetooth tethering is an android feature where when your device connects via bluetooth to certain devices it enables the mobile hotspot on your phone. ATT has removed that option from the mobile hotspot function on our devices. I can still use my Note as a hotspot for my car's head unit, but i have to open the phone and turn mobile hotspot on in order to connect.
It's just an inconvenience, but it doesn't make any sense because I'm already paying for the feature (Mobile Hotspot). Why are they limiting on how I turn the [email protected] thing on???

"Tether by Bluetooth
1. Pair your phone with the other device.
2. Set up the other device's network connection with Bluetooth.
3. On your phone, swipe down from the top of the screen.
4. Touch and hold Hotspot Wi-Fi hotspot.
5. Turn on Bluetooth tethering."
This isn't supported on ATT's version of the Note 10 Plus

Stupid Q, why use it if you can tether using wifi?
Isn't it less secure than wifi?
On my 10+ running on unpatched Pie it certainly is.
It's just called Bluetooth Tethering. You're still tethering through Mobile Hotspot (wifi). It just sees you're connected by Bluetooth to a device you allow to use your mobile hotspot and starts the hotspot automatcially.

Once you set up wifi tethering it will do the same thing once the device gets in range as long as you leave wifi and the tether enabled.
Yes but the mobile hotspot times out after you're away from the device for so long. That's the beauty of the Bluetooth tether because bt is on all the time.

Mine would reaquire within a few seconds unless I powered down one or turned off wifi.
That said AT&T is a pain, but the other major carriers are worse in many respects.
AT&T actually gives better tech support than their partner, Samsung. Scary.
Anyone else have any thoughts? I'm trying to enable my mobile hotspot automatically when my Note 10+ connects by bluetooth to my truck's android head unit. This way the head unit will have wifi access through my phones mobile hotspot. Bluetooth tethering is how Android accomplishes this but ATT has neutered our UI to remove this feature even though I pay for mobilie hotspot on my account.
Thanks!
I don't use this but can't you get the phone to recognize the truck unit and directly bt link to it?
