Hi guys,
Been on the dark side for the last 8 months (iPhone 4) and thinking on getting the new Samsung Galaxy S II.
From the specs looks like a great device and really looking forward to its release. In the meantime I would like to know which navigation app will be compatible with Android 2.3? Do I have to use a custom ROM to use free apps?
Thanks for any replies.
For example you can use Sygnic Aura, it will work on SGS II
I am also waitinging for this phone
Free apps you can download from Android Market.
Thanks, will I need a custom ROM?
No you do not need custom.
It works on stock ROMs without any problems.
What about Google's own Navigator? I'm pretty sure it's free but I can't remember, it came already installed with Google Maps & Street View on my Galaxy Tab.
Is Google Navigation working offline?
I do not know what apps will be instaled by samsung in this phone.

Android has free map apps that do work offline. I am not sure which ones and too lazy to look it up for ya.

here's a good one http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Android
I use Google Maps' Navigator on the HTC Desire, in the car with an upgrade kit (mount & charger). I'd be interested in getting the same when I get the GS2 as it is a fantastic piece of software.
Tx for the sygic aura tip !
Looks pretty neat, map coverage is much better than Copilot, 3D feature and graphics look great and the prize is VERY reasonable ! Almost whole world for 100 bucks !
That will be my first app purchase once my SGSII has arrived
Well why don't you wait and try google navigation, it's free and it will download your route (as long as you have a data connection when you start your journey)

Google Maps/Navigation caches your route and most visited locations so it has semi-offline capabilities.
what about copilote or Ndrive?
I hope tomtom don't take to long. I know they are concerned about piracy. But i will pay when they do decide.

Navigon is a great paid option

Navigon is great alright, however they have outdated Q3 2010 maps and does not seem they will update them any soon.
Copilot only £16.99 does this work ok? or can you get for free~?
Kids Place - With Child Lock - By kiddoware
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kiddoware.kidsplace
I haven't found anyone posting about this app yet, so I wanted to let everyone with kids know about this app! This app is a MUST if you occasionally let kids use your phone or have been afraid to hand over your phone to the kids because you were worried about them getting in to your email, deleting things, changing settings, making phone calls, or worst, making in app purchases!
Google should include this built-in with Android! iOS can't do this, even though I wish it could.
Android parental control with child lock. Protects your kids, data and apps.
An app launcher with a child lock that protects your personal data and restricts kids to apps you have approved. Kids Place also prevents children from downloading new apps, making phone calls, texting or performing other actions that can cost you money. Includes convenience features for parents such as auto app restart, useful for small kids who accidentally exit launched apps.
Features:
★ Custom home screen displays only apps that parents have authorized
★ Can prevent children from buying or downloading new apps
★ Capable of blocking incoming calls when Kids Home is running
★ Capable of disabling all wireless signals while Kids Home is running to avoid exposure to cell phone, wifi and Bluetooth radiation
★ Can restarts apps accidentally stopped by small children, allowing parents to stay focused on their own tasks.
★ Add custom wallpaper to customize your child’s experience while in Kids Place
★ Timer feature to lock Kids Place after specified amount of time.
★ Appropriate for children of all ages - babies, toddlers, even teenagers
In this Parental Control app, Home; Back; Search and Call buttons are locked so that kid cannot get out of the Kids Place or make phone calls.

At the moment, Google Play says it's not compatible with ICS, but I've installed the .apk and it runs just fine for me. The author says they are just polishing some cosmetic things before they approve it for ICS. If anyone is interested, I can try and get permission to post the .apk for everyone running ICS.
Spread the word about this great app. Everyone I've showed it to loves it! If you don't have kids using your phone, maybe you could use this to lock down your phone before you let your cat play with it.
Have a Great Day!

Current .apk as of April 4th, 2012
I got permission to post the current latest .apk for anyone running Ice Cream Sandwich. Just remember, the author says they are still polishing the version for ICS, but it seems to currently run perfectly for me.
Anyone else can just grab this app from the Market, I mean Google Play.

the apk is not working, also only 1kb. I would be happy if you could post it again. thanks.
Re-uploaded the file. Sorry for the bad upload! Please try again now. I downloaded the new attachment and it's the correct size now.
Have a Great Day!

works perfect now, thanks!
Just installed from Play store (not on ICS) - thanks for the app recommendation!
Thanks for this... installed on mine and my wifes phone... works great! Now I don't have to worry about my 19 month old daughter deleting anything when she grabs my phone...

Child Proof Gadget-Child Lock
A new app is there in google play store. It is also useful if your kid is playing with your android phone. It has all required features, with this its size is very small and it is harmless for your phone.
App name : Child Proof Gadget-Child Lock
I have this app called tQuran in my Samsung Galaxy S and its one of the apps that came with the stock firmware.
Now what I've noticed is that this app only runs on Samsung phones, whether a stock or custom rom, as long as its Samsung it runs and its only available in the Samsung apps market.... yes you can google it and find the apk too but all are same that is the app wont work with any non-samsung devices.
what happens on non-samsung devices is that it installs fine but once you run the app it says that Device is not Supported and app closes.
So I was wondering if someone knows how to make an app that is like locked on for samsung be like unlocked so it could be used for other phones. (yes I know there are alternatives but seriously this is the best Quran app from all the ones at play store coz its small, no add. data and very simple etc etc)
looking forward to every sort of help
apk is attached..
apk mirror link: http://www.4shared.com/android/4Dqpr4BS/tQuran.html
This works on my custom rom : HERE
Market Unlocker Pro :good: Check it out
will try.. thnx
EDIT: @EwOkie
sorry man, the app you up'd didn't work on a non-samsung device
Ok so I got this phone expecting to be able to install and run daydream apps and games. Looking on the play store aside from the official daydream app none of the other apps appear to be compatible. I could understand if some developers put device/screen restrictions on their apps but I don't see every app being that way. Is there something I'm missing or some change I need to make for the daydream compatibility?
** side note I just double checked and the official daydream app by google says incompatible device as well.

Ok so looking a little closer at the matter it appears as if Google is "automatically" giving daydream certification to most phones without LCD screens. As far as I can tell, however, the IPS screen in the G7 meets all of google's requirements. I wonder if they haven't gotten around to certifying the G7 or if they are hands down declining cert for any phone with an LCD screen. On that note does anyone know of a way without root to get daydream working on "incompatible" phones without root. I have to admit I enjoy root, but with all the manufacturers working to lock down their devices I'm trying to move away from root for the features I'm looking for. Unfortunately that means upgrading my phone more often, but alas that is the goal of the manufacturers.
I've been looking as well. Powerful phone but no good vr app?
I'm stumped on what to do. I tried to return my lg g7 thinq for the Galaxy because I am finding the Galaxy is being excepted with compatible software and yhe lg is getting passed by.
This seems like such a basic thing that I'm surprised I need to ask it, but is there a good way of browsing apps for the Galaxy Watch? I have a non-Samsung phone, so I'm installing them through the Galaxy Wearable app on my phone, but the interface is horrid. I select an app category and then see a screen of logos and cut-off app titles. No way to change the list type or sort by anything. Internet searches of good apps reveal the same recycled 20 apps that folks wrote up when it was first released. I can't find an online app store or listing either. Surely there has to be a better way. Any ideas?
Welcome to Samsung tizen OS. The only way to make that better is to switch to Android Wear OS. No one is building apps for the Samsung watch because tizen is horrible and there app store sucks LOL it looks unfinished like most of the apps you'll find there. If you just want watch faces you can use an app called watchmaker in the Android play store.. there are thousands of watch faces that will work on Samsung. Some of them are paid some of them are free. And if you don't like what you find, you can build your own from scratch within the app. Hope this helps

I was afraid of that. The irony is that I just switched from Android Wear (Zen Watch 3) because I couldn't take the laggy, buggy OS anymore. My Galaxy Watch is so zippy and responsive in comparison that it's worth it to be restricted to stock apps for what I use it for. Hopefully Samsung will get around to fixing this critical flaw.
Anyone else have ideas?

I don't think so. Wear OS is a dead OS. You go there, you get very minuscule support. They have had "Tiles" for quite a long time and STILL no one can do anything to add new tiles with their apps. Their app store is no better than Tizen's app store and new apps aren't coming out like hotcakes for their OS either. I find myself only using 5 or 6 practical apps and nothing more. I just sold my Wear OS device last week to get a Galaxy Watch. (I've used the S3 and Gear S before) People always hype up "Wear OS has more apps" yeah, more apps in quantity, but not quality. A lot of Wear OS apps also look half-baked.
Stay with Samsung, they have good support for their OS as a company and even gave us a new refreshed UI and Bixby is also getting a makeover into a true Bixby with One UI 1.5. (Comparing Google Assistant and Bixby are like apples to oranges). Tizen as a smartwatch OS in my experience has had better battery life and capability than Wear OS.
I had Wear OS awhile ago, and it is DOA!
I so much agree with you guys. Just put my Tickwatch pro away, and back to Tizen now, with my Active2.
(If a poor enthusiastic Android user in Holland wants it for free he can pick my Tickwatch up, if near the Hague.)
The user interface Samsung did is just great. The possibility to use the phone app for settings is nice also.
But the appstore.... Brrr. And what happened with the old KLM app?
E.g. I would love to have an app that gives a clearer and more persistent message on my watch when I accidentally leave my phone behind.
On Wear os it shows the "did you forget your phone?" message with clear sound.
Really miss it. I forget my phone all the time.
Huib
I was a bit apprehensive about making the switch from my trusty LG Urbane with WearOS but Tizen is much better designed and smoother than WearOS. The only downside as others have mentioned is the app store which is pants. The range and quality of apps on offer is extremely poor, even from big names such as Uber and BMW whose apps just don't work.
