'Hollow' tapping on screen - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Questions & Answers

Hi, not sure if this was brought up before. Take your screen off then lightly tap your thumb on different parts of the screen. Does it sound different? For me, just to the left of the fingerprint sensor I am hearing a hollow tap that I don't hear anywhere else on the screen. Anyone else or is this just on my phone?

It's where the fingerprint sensor is mounted under the screen. This is from jerry-rig everything teardown of the Note 10+.

Ok but where I get the hollow sound is to the bottom left of that area, about halfway between the sensor and the very bottom of the screen.

Maybe a manufacturing defect. Mine sounds solid.
Battery may not be heat glued in solid...

Send it back its defective

Improperly grounded touchscreen?

My capacitive touchscreen has been having a pretty odd issue. If I lay the phone on a bed or desk and try to use the touchscreen with only one finger, I get all sorts of weird input on the screen. Then, if I touch the phone casing while repeating the same motion with the same finger (anywhere on the side of the casing or rear panel) the touchscreen works flawlessly.
Right now, my device is sitting on my bed, if I unlock it and try to pull down the notification window shade with just one finger, it's impossible. If I touch the casing with another finger and then try to pull down the shade, it's flawless.
From my understanding, in a capacitive touchscreen, a layer of electrons (ions?) is passed over the screen and a sensor detects where the flow of electrons is interrupted by the electrical conductivity of the human body. It seems that my phone is having issues with the electrons not just flowing over the screen, but around the casing as well, causing issues.
Anyone else experiencing this?

This appears to be a significant issues of owners of the HTC Incredible. You might get more useful information in that board, seeing as how they've been experiencing it for much longer than we have.
Wow, the video that they have on the Incredible forums of the phone on the Styrofoam is exactly the same issue I am seeing on my device.
I would link it, but apparently new users aren't allowed links. Ugh, this is a real bummer. Especially since that guy had 2 replacements sent to him, both with the same issues.
I too am experiencing this. I want you to try something a little different. Pull the kickstand out and stand it up on the bed. Then put your finger on the kickstand and you should be able to pull the notification bar down all the way to the bottom and let it lock with your other hand while still keeping the finger on the kickstand. Then take that finger off of the kickstand then slowly bring the notification menu bar back towards the top with your finger. Tell me your results. And i'll let you know if we had the same.
It appears that HTC has got some serious quality control to enforce on their recent devices. At this point, releasing a flagship phone with these issues is nothing short of unacceptable. I'm as big of an HTC fanboy as they come, but I'm really considering switching loyalties to Motorola is this crap continues. It's bad enough being capped at 30fps on the Evo.
If I put my finger on the kickstand I can pull down the notification bar completely, without issue. When I let go and pull the bar up, it works, but looks like it is trailing behind where my finger is by about a half inch, until I get roughly 3/4 of the way up to the top then it passes my finger like i'm not touching the screen anymore.

That might be the touch input lag we're experiencing as well. This may be tied to the 30fps graphic limit on the Evo.
The 30 fps limit is disconcerting, but that seems like it is something that could be fixed through firmware, however I doubt this issue is fixable.
Yeah, that's the exact same response I received from it; except when going back up, i reached the 1/2 way point on the screen and the notification bar shot up.

Well this is slightly depressing.
Ugh, my curiosity got the best of me, and the results aren't pretty.
When I lie my Evo down on a flat surface, the notification bar becomes absolutely impossible to pull down unless another finger touches any part of the phone. A test on the multitouch visualizer app shows that the screen completely stops recognizing my finger when y1 is equal to 40. This is essentially the entire height of the notification bar.
This isn't a deal breaker in any way, but what the ****, HTC? Is this how you treat your customers?
On mine, my screen becomes effected as early as y=500, then gets really bad around y=250, then is completely unresponsive after y=100.

wow, that blows, mine does the bad response -40 thing. holy ****, it's really just one thing after another with these phones...
I guess there is no such thing as a perfect phone no matter how much money, research, and time is invested into it.
I too have this issue, I have noticed occasionally its hard to pull out the notification bar, but when I pick up the phone and pull bar with other hand it works perfect.
For the heck of it I tested my Evo on every surface i could my hands on from glass, to thick carpet, bed sheets, etc, etc. Mine doesn't seem to have this issue, so it's definitely not every phone. If it's a big issue for you, you may want to see about getting it replaced.

Thanks for the thoroughness of your test!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kJ_fR02suQ i recorded it so people can see what's going on.
Have any of you contacted Sprint about this? I'd definitely try to get it replaced ASAP if I were you, hopefully the next one won't have this problem.
I spoke with a lady from HTC today and she said that they were aware of the grounding issue before it was released (during training). She didn't say whether it could be fixed or not though.
mine works perfectly fine i just tested it right now

Problem with the screen or S-pen

Hey,
I have a problem with either my screen or my S-pen. Look at the youtube video and you will see what the problem is.
http://youtu.be/7gI-gzwkBGQ
This only happens on certain parts of the screen, quite small area were it happens but really annoying.

The video clearly shows magnetic interference and distortion around the pen area, you can clearly see the interference pattern moving on the video, near the pen area, but clearly not at the bottom of the screen...
Do you have a case with magnets that auto turns on/off the tablet?
Take your magnetic case off, and it should return to normal..... The magnets are too strong.

And what is to do now? Maybe all Z Plays have this. You must look very critical to see this "issue". For me it's ok. There is no 100% perfect phone.
But is the issue bigger, then I would call the support.

I agree, it's not a major issue, I was thinking to take of the screen completley and reglue it using some duble sided tape... But there is a risk of breaking the screen in the proces... It's not worth it
What about putting duck tape across top and bottom of the screen? Don't forget to make holes for loudspeaker, front camera and proximity sensor. And for microphone and fingerprint at bottom
So, you're all saying that tbe whole screen is moving a bit in the case? Check teardown and you'll see that is actually glued. Not my favorite solution but I suppose is cost effective.

Yah it's glued and very liberally glued at the top and the bottom of the screen. How do I know? Broke my screen a few months ago and replaced my screen myself.

Bought a screen off eBay, yes you need to heat up the glue underneath the screen with a heat gun.
Got the new screen in after I had to remove all the small piece of glass that was still glued but it's not an easy repair and I still have screen issues I assume the screen isn't the same quality as the original one which comes with a silver backing plate.
In bright sunlight my screen turns blue
The battery maybe will never die, because a bigger LiPo much longer live as a small one and we just load again all 2 or 3 days. So that's ok that's build in. Maybe the screen is much earlier broken. Hope it doesn't broke
My battery has 3600mAh(3597)

I don't think that anyone is planning to drop the phone. Except maybe Turbo 2/Force.

Ironically, mine got green lines literally sitting on the desk.
I can confirm my phone has the same problem near the top left corner. It is so disappointing to see such a bad build quality.
If you observe carefully just above volume up button screen is not even inside the aluminum frame there is slight gap. And if you apply little pressure screen goes down. Is this normal ?

Swipe in from the left very difficult

Title says it. I am finding swiping in from the left (specifically for hamburger menus in apps) very difficult to do. Half the time it just seems to not register at the edge of the screen. I thought maybe it was my case, but it's just as difficult without the case. Some kind of edge rejection or maybe diminished touch sensitivity from the screen protector? I don't wanna remove it if I don't have to... Anyone else seen this?

Hmm, because I have the exact same issue as you with my TG screen protector.
It's pretty damn annoying, even had to switch launchers because I can't use swipes from the edge anymore :/
Yes, exactly the same issue. I'm guessing that's a bezel less design flaw if OP5T and it cannot be fixed with software patch. I can live with this issue
Same thing here. I just thought it was from having the case on, and so I didn't bother trying to experiment with it more until now.
Don't know what's wrong with your 5T's because case/screen protector or not I have no problem swiping down from the top, bottom, from the left or from the right on my 5T...
I opened play store and pull the menu from the left with no issues and also the notification bar from the top.
If you are having problems this does not seem to be the norm for me but then again maybe mine is the aberrant unit... It works fine...

I have to be very deliberate with my swipes from the left and I'm guessing it's in part because of the small bezels and my fat fingers. So when I swipe in, it doesn't see my finger as being all the way to the left, so it becomes difficult to swipe the hamburger menus in.
What I don't know if it's because of the bezels directly or if the screen protector is making it worse. And I don't want to take it off to test because then I will need to get a new (potentially inferior) screen protector and hope I can apply it without any bubbles.

Again, my screen protector is stock applied from Oneplus, I am by no means a small person and have ham fists too. The bezels on the right should be the same size or the phone would look pretty funny...
Either side to swipe is the same, quick swipe from left or right, top or bottom, all work equally well.
How does yours swipe from the other sides? Do you have an issue swiping from top or bottom too?
It shouldn't matter where you swipe from, it should be the same. Quick and easy with no having to try again and again.

No I don't have any issues from the other directions because I don't have to swipe in menus from those sides. Swiping between home screens is no issue, it's just hamburger menus on the left. And I think it's because the bezel is so small that my fat fingers taps don't register far enough over, so I swipe and get no menu unless I am very deliberate. On my last phone, the Nexus 6, I never had to think about it.
I have some issues swiping on a certain edge of my screen were I can see that the pre-applied screen protector is starting to come up a little from the screen. I'm thinking of pulling it completely off soon.

Screen unlocking during calls

I got my View 20 recently and I'm having a problem with screen unlocking during calls. The speaker is roughly at a 45 degree angle and I think so is the proximity sensor. And it only recognizes objects that are very very close to it. In other words unless I have the phone pressed against my ear (not touching or close to, actually pressed against it) it unlocks the screen during call, the notification panel opens up and I activate things I don't wanna activate... Once just as a test I made a short phone call and I made sure to keep the top of the phone pressed against my ear at all times and somehow it still unlocked the screen and the notification panel was open...
To make things even worse, because the angle is so weird I have to keep the phone lower than I'm used to (or comfortable with) and the bottom of the phone is way below my mouth which is bad too.
It's a real issue and I don't know what I can do to fix it. Please help me.
(And just as a side note I can't believe no one has mentioned this in ANY review - even if the screen doesn't unlock for them, the angle of the speaker is still weird and to hear the sound well you have to hold the phone lower than normally. It IS significant and I have no idea why this hasn't come up in any review or opinion on the internet).

It's not a fault... The sensor is on the top of the device instead of the front/screen so it happens... Poor design choice that's all.
Same problem noticed since day 1, found also no solution yet.

Yeah, except it's not pointed upwards, it's pointed at a roughly 45 degree angle, so it should still work more or less fine. Maybe less fine than forward-facing sensor but still ok. And I doubt that thousands (millions?) of people who bought that phone experience the same problems and no one has mentioned it yet.
I'm on the second view 20... Sent first one back as I didn't like the warmish tint on the screen... Second one has a much cooler tone... Both do this with calls and my brother also has a view 20 and he has the same issue... Mine was from Amazon and he got his from carphone warehouse.
