Xaomi/Redmi phones overclocked past 60 Hz - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Ive seen quite a few people using this mod on their xiaomi MI 9 phones (And even the Redmi phones) to go past 60 hz. Its even working on the lower MI 9 SE..
https://forum.xda-developers.com/Mi-9/themes/mod-overclock-screen-to-84hz-t3942063
Yes, development for the S9 has been pretty low, seems most people abandoned it and jumped to the s10 or other phones but it would be great if some Dev's could take a look at this. Maybe there is a chance the S9 could go even higher than it does? AFAIK the panels used should be quite the same.
Im sure a lot of S9 users feel the same, hopefully.

To buy or not...

It looks like the mi 9 SE will be released global on the 28th of March. I want to "measure" how big the xda community will be for this phone, and also just curious...
If the mi 9 SE will be released globally, will you consider buying this phone (answer in poll)?
Well it's just as easy to modify as most of Xiaomi phones so I guess soon there will be here some custom rom choices. Especially if the only other smaller size competitor is Samsung 10e, for over twice the price.
I have 9se for about three weeks so far and must admit it's a great piece of hardware, but only if you like compact devices. Otherwise I'd rather choose Redmi Note 7 (limited budget) or Mi 9 or keep waiting for Poco F2.

Yes, absolutely. I'm looking forward to purchase the 128gb varient. I LOVE compact phones, especially the ones with flagship spec i.e. Sony. But I'm definitely getting the Mi 9 SE.
Actually, its form factor seem to be the best. I would consider buying the P30 or S10e, but the price is way better on the Mi 9 SE.
Just wondering if it worth waiting for the Mi A3 lite, which would be about the same smartphone except for the snapdragon (660 and not 712) but with Android One and b28....
It depends on what is important for you. I am planning to buy too, after I have seen some reviews and possibly if I see some development activity here.
The reasons I would buy this phone are: small size, amoled screen, quite decent chipset and nfc.
I would personally not buy the galaxy s10e because of the high price and the lack of developement I have seen with their previous phones.

Ho that's interesting, can you explain why? (I guess the amoled screen won't be on the Mi A3 and that's why i'll buy the 9 SE, but still I'm curious)

I just watched a couple of reviews and forum posts so mine is not a "direct" opinion, anyway
About photos, they are very good. They are not great, as well as big brother Mi 9, probably that's due to the software: AI and drivers are still not perfectly calibrated on Sony IMX586. It looks like worst than Mi 8, even if on paper Mi9/Mi9SE should have a better sensor.
About battery, it's enough! If you use dark theme, you can reach 6 hours of display on. Recently Xiaomi released DC function for Mi 9 , maybe we will see the same for Mi 9 SE because both have AMOLED display, which can benefit of this DC function.
If battery sometime isn't enough, QC @ 18W can pump in a few minutes the energy you need to reach late night.

Photos during daylight are great, just as you wish them to be. Every lens is doing it's job well - you can get a nice close up photo with zoom, wide angle lens proved to be useful as well, bokeh is nice (but it used to be so even on Mi 6). I am a little disappointed with night mode though - before I was playing with it on Mix 3 and there the results looked like magic, here are mediocre. It looks like the algorithm is only increasing the general brightness of the photo without recognizing the difference between stuff which should be visible and that is supposed to remain dark. The effect is obviously worse than on Mi 9 (basing on the reviews).
The battery is sufficient. Mi 9 SE as a smaller size phone is not bought for gaming therefore for any other activity can be used quite long. E.g. I've got over 14 hours of continuous movie play (MX Player HW+) and 25 hours when left as a clock (Big Clock app on Google Play). When you're not using the phone the battery drain is about 1% per hour with Ambient Display on.

Xiaomi is notoriously slow with updates. Like now, it's the end of March still no March patch, some people didn't even get Feb patch yet. And the biggest f*** up that Xiaomi did is after android pie update. Wifi Mac has changed, some people got their phone bricked, wifi keeps disconnecting, battery life is super poor (4-5h sot), a lot of bugs I encounter every day, still using 3.18 kernel instead of 4.9 etc. etc.

Nah, the only reason why switched to custom for a while is because the wifi problem, everyone is facing this issue. It's disconnects won't won't connect back, and 5ghz wifi speed is very poor.

I want the mi 9 se as a replacement device. I finally want a premium (cut down) flagship phone, and hopefully will last for about 4 years or more.
Looks like I was following a false track. The release from 28th only contained mi 9 and redmi note 7.
There have been a few others sources hinting towards a global launch. For now we just have to wait.

Many AliExpress sellers are accepting pre-sales with some displaying pictures showing stock of the global version. I have placed an order with HK Goldway, I'll update when it's shipped.

It is also listed on geekbuying for buying, not only for preorder.
6/64 edition for about 330€ after using coupons seems to be quite a good deal.
Pros:
- 6" screen is still enough.
- Amoled screen and non-intrusive notch.
- Size. The device itself is tiny and lightweight.
- Hardware is below flagship, but much better than mid-range.
- Treble enabled, kernel source already released.
Cons:
- MIUI environment is not so friendly.
- dev scene (I hope I am wrong).
- OEM updates.

Miui and oem updates aren't the issue for me.
Ok, so to summerize:
- Small from factor
- Amoled screen
- Indisplay fingerprint
- 4G b20 and b28
- Widevine L1
- 6Gb RAM
A part for the CPU power, it is even more interesting for me than s10e, and for half the price.
So I definetly swap my OnePlus 6 for this device. The last question is where should we buy it to be sure we have the global version?
I saw that honorbuy.com send the right one with even european charger, but a bit expansive...

I would reccomend honorbuy because of european stock and no VAT on delivery (if you are based in Europe).
Devices are shipped with european socket charger.
If you buy on Aliexpress you must check any custom duty that would be added to the shipment in your country.

Buying Samsung Galaxy S9+ instead of Xiaomi Mi 9?

Hello!
In few days I would like to buy a new phone. Right now, in my country, there are massive price drops of SGS9+/ Note 9 prices. So SGS9+ costs 536€ and Note 9 699€.
As You might know, Mi 9 costs about 466€ (6/128 variant). The thing is, that Mi 9 is almost unpossible to get from official distribution. There are only few pieces avalaible for sale every week.
In my opinion Mi 9 only advantages are newest Snapdragon 855, and better look (personal opinion), and under display fingerprint scanner. Camera without OIS is a little bit worrying.
My biggest concerns about SGS9+/Note 9, is Exynos which in benchmarks is slightly slower than Snap 845. But on the other hand I think that camera would be better, and despite being released over year ago (SGS9+), it still can show off with the new technologies.
If Samsung, then question is SGS9+ or Note 9? Note 9 has larger battery, stylus (sounds like a good idea, but in practice can't say how often I would use it) and a little bit telephoto camera. Would You say that it is worth to pay more?
I would like to hear your opinions regarding Samsung devices, and maybe even some of You has comparision to Mi 9
I will be grateful for any recommendations.
Thanks!

It depends on your usage, if you want a phone with stereo speakers, headphone jack and SD card slot, with higher screen resolution and higher front facing video resolution, and if you care about a more secure iris/face unlock and more reliable physical fingerprint scanner, go for the S9+/Note 9 (depends if you need an S pen). Otherwise go for the Xiaomi Mi 9. Personally, I prefer Samsung's software though. But since you can pay 699€, I recommend you to pay a few more and get the S10e, or wait for the S10 price to drop, it will be much better than the Mi 9...

I'd prefer Samsung, they have a better track record, especially on the security and spyware department.
Since you don't have access to the Galaxy so plus with the snapdragon variant that equals to worst camera and battery (I mean on snapdragon you are gonna be able to use the GCam mods with great alogirthm for Better photos, you can use the wide lens camera, better portait pictures etc! And the battery in my experience of the s9 (not the s9+ is just fine I am able t get 2:30hrs of sot time per charge in full HD )

Planning to Buy OnePlus 5t in 2019?

Hello guys
Sorry for the long question.
I am very confused these days, i sold Redmi Note 7 some days ago but now i don't understand that what device is perfect for me in my low budget. I have some devices in my mind:
1. Pocophone F1
2. Realme 3 Pro
3. OnePlus 5T
What i need:
I really like to install different roms on my deivce, occasionally gaming and most of the time watching movies etc.
Why i am not able to decide ?
1. Pocophone F1
Big notch taking over 70% of status bar. Heard / saw different threads claiming that the devices has touch screen / hardware issues.
2. Realme 3 Pro
Realme 5 Pro also available around the world but not in Pakistan. In Pakistan only option so far is Realme 3 Pro. Overall phone seems to be a good deal. But there is no Android development.
3. OnePlus 5T
This device is my most favorite device. Do you guys recommend me to buy 5T in 2019? and i also want to now, that is there any common hardware related issues to check for before buying?
Looking for response from you guys.
Plenty of ROM support and easy methodology to tamper, if you aren't a fan of OOS which is quite good anyway. Updates are still being released quite frequently through the beta.
Bought mine on release, coming up on 2 years ago now. Only complaints I have hardware wise:
-charging port can be finicky, but I need to clean it.
-camera is very average (but GCam mod with root + camera library dot fix performs very well)
I don't see myself getting a different phone for at LEAST another year and a bit. Take of that what you will.
I bought oneplus 5t 2 weeks a ago and i would say buy the damn phone you won't regret it, previously i was using samsung a50 but was not satisfied with the performance, oneplus 5t is blazing fast, go for it
Good phone but two things that suck
Vibration motor is horrible. It's so weak that I can't even hear it most of the time
Camera quality out of the box is just average
This two things didn't seem to be important to me in the past but you do notice the difference after using the phone for 2 years
In my opinion 5T is still beast but official beta support had dropped
Not that much custom ROMs available (many maintainers and developers switched to op6 or higher models)
Better try to buy op6or6T
Although open beta has been stripped for the 5t I'm still more than happy with my 5t. I even prefer OOS over the custom ROMs because it's really fast, stable and the gesture control kicks ass and is way better than that Google thing. Plus have in mind that OP already confirmed Android q. It may take a while but for now OP is still going strong with security patches. As long the battery is fine so am I.
Dear all,
I have removed some off topic posts from this thread. Please post with manners and contribute to the discussion. Thanks.

The Pocophone has larger battery and an IR scanner which is amazing for face recognition. But the screen is not good as 5T's.
Oxygen OS is probably the best out there. It is light and so fast and allows so many customizations. I bet you won't be bothered with custom ROMs!
Snapdragons 835 and 845 don't differ much either.
I'd go for the 5T if I found both at similar price.

Realme 6 pro Or Poco X2?[suggestion request]

Hey guys,
I have checked tons of youtube reviews and online reviews on the devices but for the first time in my life I am stuck to take one of these phones. I had mostly used bigger smart phones since the android era, like Sony Z ultra, Mi max etc .
I need to get one of these phones immediately, PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR HONEST opinion.
I think Poco X2 is a better choice.
It has better screen (120Hz vs 90Hz) and much better community support (custom kernel, ROM, etc).
Especially for community support, Realme is still FAR BEHIND Xiaomi.
Realme 6 Pro still got no bootloader unlock while Poco X2 already had several custom ROM and kernel available right freaking now.
I'd stay away from realme if they still being a b*tch like this, that's how disappointed I am with my 6 pro.

If you want better cus rom support and a better primary sensor then X2. There isn't much of a difference. 120hz gives a tiny bit of more smoothness in scrolling other wise you'll be stuck on 60hz on most of the interface. This high refresh rate thing is a new gimmick just like quad camera where 2 of the sensors are useless (macro & depth). Atleast the 6pro has a telephoto lens. Also poco x2 with 120hz drains battery faster. 720G and 730G are mostly similar in terms of performance. Ad situation is a lot better on Realme as u will have to turn off one single toggle and all ads are gone.
I have used stock android most of life and I hated the idea of a custom skin but realme ui is good (after disabling a few coloros apps) and you will get used to the ui in 2-3 days and it feels a lot more smooth and polished, even though a few options are missing.
Normally the Pro versions have good cusrom support but realme didn't allow bl unlock yet, once they do there will be some roms on the way as sources are released already (I think, not completely sure).

Question S21U exynos to 9 Pro?

Hello
I have a S21U exynos for nearly a year and it's beginning to boring me, I don't dare to root it because of knox
Also I don't like that sometimes I have to double swipe because the screen needs a longer swipe area than OP phone or the s21u screen are just not as responsive. Same goes for the double tap to open anything because Samsung UI doesn't accept to open an app or menu/settings if any even very slight scrolling is still on screen.
Here's why I am tempted by the 9 Pro:
-Snapdragon vs exynos
-The battery is finally nearly the same thanks to A12, no ?
-ROOT freedom, when I am getting bired of the OS I can simple change the custom rom wmabd all that without being afraid of knox
-OP 10 pro unveiled today looks nothing better than 9 Pro besides the cpu/gpu, the mi 12 pro tele lens is catastrophic given the actual reviews, the s22u will be a copy/paste of the s21u but with an spen... Well 2022 is not a wow year
What I am afraid to miss the most though is the 10x telescopic zoom, but over 11 months I only used like 10 times mostly to impress my gf with moon shots lol
So what do you think? Am I crazy?
Anyone had an s21u and got the 9 Pro?
I had the 9 Pro and got the S21U in august
Battery is better BY FAR, my Op9 was laggy and buggy and i couldnt figure out why. OxygenOS is basically dead and that was always the main reason to buy the OP

Exynos. Haven't had A12, but as I said, without OxygenOS OnePlus is dead. ColorOS (what A12 basically is on OP9) is trash
I have the 9 Pro for 5-6 month now. Switched from Pixel 4Xl to iPhone 11 Pro Max to Note 20 Ultra cheated with Xperie 1ii and back to iPhone 12 Pro Max, then i bought the 9 Pro. So i switched a lot last year. I'm not a fanboy of any brand.
My ranking from best to worse -> 9Pro, 11 Pro Max, Xperia 1ii, Pixel 4XL, 12 Pro Max, Note 20 Ultra (exynos).
9 Pro it's not laggy at all by the way. It's the most fluid/smooth phone i've used. Screen is fantastic and by far the best i've used.
Performance is superb. Camera (got major updat) is brilliant. Battery (A11) is great.
Fast Charging 30 Min ...
All the crying about Oxygen vs Color OS... Don't know, kind of childish. With OxygenOS 12 (Color OS with Oxy Skin) you won't feel a difference. It does not matter. It's still a very clean near stock experience.
If you wabt to switch, just try it, i can highly recommend the 9 Pro

Do you think the passage from 6.8" to 6.7" will be obvious or it's pretty much the same size?
Nah TINY bit smaller, 0,1" is nothing... you know what they say about size
Well, i say is not really ultra. Because is Exynos...
My 9 pro works very well. ColorOs 12 stable C.39 is very good. Except some notification i don't have problems.
Oxygen is full of Google BS. That it makes it Bad.
I use bluetooth = smart watch & music 8 h/day at work. For me. battery is very good.
I never have lag or any other screen problems.
xPan mode color/black & white is gorgeous for photos.
You don't feel that 0,1" difference. 100%.
But why don't you wait a little & buy 10 pro?

10 pro is deceiving, at least for me, same telephoto camera while I hoped for a 5x or 10x, super wide camera is worse than 9 pro, same exact screen in terms of size and brightness...
And the price of new OP flagships here in my country is always overpriced, the 9 Pro 12/256 started at 1150$ now it's at 770$!!
I can sell my 10 months old s21u for 770$ today and pay 0$ for a brand new 9 Pro. When the 10 Pro will be out, the s22u would have been out for 2 months so I couldn't sell the s21u more than 600$
As for the 9 Pro I guess it won't drop too much anymore here, perhaps max 50$
That's the question.. is the 10 pro worth it. Same camera mainsensor, worse ultrawide sensor 1/2.56 (guess it was) on the 10 Pro and 1/1.5x on 9 Pro is a huge size difference. Only thing will be (cam) software.
And better CPU/GPU chip.
If you get the 9Pro with a discount...

I hear you as I feel the same about my S21+ exynos except that I plan to switch to Xiaomi 12 because Oneplus is faaar away from the spirit which made its success years ago. It was nearly half the price of the best flagship and with better performance, development was very active with high interactivity with the growing users community, big big choice of custom roms and kernels, ...etc
Lately Oneplus seemed lagging behind in all these aspects and becoming exactly what they were laughing at (they said Never Settle ) and now they are getting Oppofied, uh no thank you.
So what's left for me to get away from samsung and their latest try to punish me for rooting the phone I bought with my money by disabling shealth, blocking connection with my gw4, ...etc plus some other annoyances which persist since day 1? Xiaomi 12 seems to me the best option. I made my mind and I just wait for it to go global in the coming weeks.
