Samsung Notes app not converting to text - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Questions & Answers

I'm often having issues when writing some notes down with the S Pen in the Samsung Notes app and then tapping on the convert button. It will just clock forever and never convert. I have closed the app, reopened it, tried creating a new note with completely different text, created a note from the lock screen, a note from the app itself, it just doesn't work.
The only way I get it to work is by clearing the app data, which also deletes any notes not synced with Samsung cloud. After deleting the app data, converting text is instantaneous. Clearing app data alone doesn't always work. My current app version is Version 3.1 .00.84 .View attachment 4827385

I gave it a few tries and it worked only once out of 3 attempts. I'm pretty sure my handwriting isn't that bad either [emoji14]

I have the same issue with my native language (Bulgarian) it does not work well but the biggest problem is that in order to use the conversation to text i have to use the samsung keyboard because there is no other way to change the language but to use the default keyboard, I think this is not good enough from them.

Another way to convert handwriting to text is to use Gboard. There are 2 Gboard keyboards (normal one and handwriting). So when I'm using Spen I just long tap on spacebar and switch to handwriting keyboard. I think it is better and easier than the built in keyboard and more accurate.

Smileys

I'm using the stock Samsung keyboard and noticed that the Smileys key option only shows in certain apps. It shows in Google talk but not when typing in the messaging app where the option is quite useful. Is there a way to show the Smileys option in all apps?

I'd hold off on the OTA to update Search...then again...I don't use it.

What is the workaround?

My experience...
Copy all files into "/system/app" and set permissions to rw-r-r-.
Android 4.4 Launcher (GoogleHome.apk) (Works great! Butter smooth, nice change in functionality.) Requires Google Now (Velvet.apk) and Google Play Services (PrebuiltGmsCore.apk)
Calendar (v201308021) (Works great!)
Clock (v3.0.0) (Works great!)
Email (v6.0-893803) (I don't use, didn't try.)
Gallery (v1.1.40304) (Works, but force closes when trying to edit a photo.)
Gmail (v4.6.1) (Works great!)
Camera (v2.0.001) (Works great! Limited to 1080p video recording on Snapdragon Note 3's. 4K is not an option.)
Hangouts (v2.0.012) (Works great w/ new SMS messaging capabilities. In that regard, it can replace the stock messaging app. However, MMS's (pic messages to phone numbers) freezes the app, requiring you to clear its cache and data to get it working again. Sending the same picture to a standard Hangout recipient without a phone number, it functions without issues.)
Keep (v2.0.50) (Works great!)
Google Keyboard (v2.0.19003.893803a) (Would not work. Selected it through Android's Input Changer. While the space for the keyboard was reserved (blank white spot), the keyboard itself never displayed.)
Wallpapers (Available in both gallery apps upon copying to device's storage. Redundant, as they were already available to select as wallpapers with the KitKat launcher.)
Initially, Google Search kept crashing, even after trying the languages trick. Using the lib file recommended by @docnok63 worked perfectly. Saying, "Ok Google" from the any of your Homescreens or Google Now activates voice search. All search queries performed were successful and crash free.
(Rename the original to libgoogle_recognizer_jni_l.so.bak before copying.)
libgoogle_recognizer_jni_l.so (Tested, confirmed working! ) Copy the file into "/system/lib" and set permissions to rw-r-r-.
(Rename the original to libvideochat_jni.so.bak before copying.)
libvideochat_jni.so (Fixes video chat issues in the Hangout app. Tested, verified working.) Copy the file into "/system/lib" and set permissions to rw-r-r-. Thanks @NeoMagus
Photosphere_Fix.rar (Google Camera Photosphere FC Fix) Extract winrar archive and copy the files into "/system/lib" and set permissions to rw-r-r-.
Ok, so explain this one...
When using the Kit Kat Home Launcher... You can't change the DPI of your system, or you will constantly have the keyboard popup when you hit the home button and it goes back to the home screen..
Why is this?
For anyone having problems with search force closing. The easiest solution:
- go into your PHONE settings, (app drawer > settings. NOT Google launcher settings)
- go to language & input
- change default language to different language (I chose Spanish)
- click home
- in the Google search bar, PRESS THE MIC and do a search USING YOUR VOICE (do not type)
- after search is complete, go home again, and go into settings again (if you chose to change to Spanish, settings got renamed to Config in your app drawer).
- go to language & input
- change default language back to Englis
- "Ok Google" won't show up in the Google search bar, but saying it still works.

The two additional apps can be found by following the OP's first link. They've always been there.
Google search works great for me when searching, but saying ok Google or Google never works when trying from any home screen. Only works when I have Google now already open.

You guys may have already done this, but not knowing how experienced you are, I'll ask anyway...
Are you using Android 4.4 Launcher (GoogleHome.apk) specifically with Google Now (Velvet.apk) and Google Play Services (PrebuiltGmsCore.apk) to ensure everything functions properly? I also manually copied each file into "/system/app" and set the permissions to rw-r-r-.
Did you copy libgoogle_recognizer_jni_l.so into "/system/lib" and set permissions to rw-r-r-?
Note: The newest Google Play Services or Google Search (Google Now "Velvet.apk") updated from the market under JellyBean did not work properly for me. This is even after I copied the updated files from "/data/app", renamed them to their correct titles, and moved them into "/system/app". I had to use the KitKat specific files from the links provided above.
"Ok Google", only works with "English (US)" language for me. I tried "English (Canada)" as well as "English (UK)", and each time the mic in the search bar was hollow. It's not until I switch back to English (US) that the mic becomes solid. Also, while navigating to "Settings/Voice", I noticed that "Hotword detection" is only available by choosing English (US), which is the main setting that allows the app and device to listen for the phrase.

Nice write up. I got the new keyboard to work with both my N3 and my girl's S4 (although, oddly, there's less emojis on her S4 for some reason). Make sure after you install the .apk that you enable it in Settings\Languages and Input (it will be unchecked by default.) It appears as Google Keyboard - English (US).

It's built for another device with a different version of Android. Don't EXPECT everything to work flawlessly. You can look over this thread for troubleshooting help.

i dont think thats possible ...bcoz its compatible only with aosp roms
I dont know a way to remove it and use the stock dialer but you can download SwipeDialer if you want and use it instead of the samsung dialer to have the stock look.
I did the same coz the samsung dialer and contacts are slow.
I don't think there's a way to disable to set a default dialer that isn't the default Samsung dialer.
But, what you can do is go into the dialer options and have it REJECT ALL CALLS. Then, when a call comes in, you won't have all these different dialers popping up.
The default dialer and contacts apps by Samsung are terrible.
What's more terrible is that you can't even give it a rating or feedback since it's not on the store. In addition, you cannot install the Google Dialer.

Is there a mod that can change chat bubble color in Samsung Messages?

Peace All...
Is there a way or mod to change the chat bubble colors of Samsung's Messages from that God awful green? I heard of Hex Installer, but you have to take on the whole entire theme. I just want to change chat bubble colors ---> and I do NOT want to use a 3red party text messaging app.
Any one know of anything that might be able to do this??

Bump, I would also like to know.
Use MOOD
Far superior to Samsung Messages and that damned Google Message app that used to be good
Try it out, you can customize bubbles, text, backgrounds (per thread!) and much more.

That app (which you didnt name) might be "far superior" than Samsung's Messages, but I have no desire to switch to it, I would prefer to keep using Samsung Messages.
But Thanks anyway

How about naming that app??
It's Mood (or mood messenger). I've used Textra, Google message, and many others. I think this is the most customizable
Anyone know a caller / Messaging combo app that supports dual sim, so it can remember the default sim for each contact.
Also the samsung messaging app, if i copy a text, then i get another window to copy the txt again which is annoying

I get what your saying about the copy. The key is using the s pen. Hold down the button and then select. Only three small dialog box will pop up.

A small update for anyone who cares....
I've moved on to another SMS app called Pulse. It allows texting both on your phone and desktop simultaneously so you can text at work and on the road.. saves my thumbs tbh. Mood is still a little more customizable but pulse is still pretty damned customizable as well and the multi platform access is a current winner for me.
I know no one asked, just thought I'd share.
Cheers, XDA!

How to change default storage location of New Contacts

Hi there
As the title suggests I want to change the Default storage location when I'm adding a new contact.
By mistake I chose Phone and now want to change it to my email Id but couldn't find an option in settings.
Appreciate your time.
Hi.
Try "contacts optimizer" app. It allows you to do such a thing. With the free version you can only change one contact at a time. The paid version allows to do bulk changes.
Best.
