Hello All,
I ordered a brand new never-opened Pixel XL from Amazon. I was wondering, what would be the fastest way to update it to Android 10? It most likely will be on 7.1.1 out of the box. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

If the IMIE starts with 35 it is a Verizon Pixel XL the bootloader is locked. Before you update you may want to try and unlock the bootloader.

It might be 'Carrier Unlocked', that is not the same as bootloader unlocked. Carrier unlock means you should be able to use it on any carrier. Bootloader unlock means you can root it.

It was carrier unlocked, and it works perfectly well. It is on Android 8.0.0 and is offering to update directly to Android 10. Is it possible to do that?

There's no difference with root. You just can't unlock bootloader after the update. There are tons of threads about root already

He can't use those root files with an unlocked bootloader
I wish VZW users would preface their thread titles with [VERIZON] so the rest of us could save a few clicks and just ignore them.
@revolt1,
Don't hold your breath waiting. I doubt there'll be a method to unlock VZW Pixel XL bootloader running 7.1.1.
7.1.1 locked up the bootloader again. Need to wait for an exploit. I'm finding .ore and more these days that stock Android is my fav without root now that I have a non-root AdBlock method.

Cuz you have to be unlocked to root. Unlocking is step one before you can do anything.
An update locked the bootloader? Thanks for this, I'll not be going to vz to get this phone. Now I'm wondering if the update that the Google bought phone gets when a vz sim is inserted (what I've read) will do the same?

If you find one in stock it shouldn't have the update since it just came out last week. You can't remove sim and skip setup and don't connect to wifi. Then you can unlock before taking the OTA. That's what I did on my replacement pixel from best buy
Just to clarify, if you are already unlocked before taking the 7.1.1 update you will still be unlocked after update.

I'm not Verizon but I have some experience and can tell you 100% no doubt that you're stuck if you're on the latest update from Verizon and do not have an unlocked bootloader.
There is no way to go back just to unlock the bootloader.
Sorry.
@CZ Eddie is right. No way to go back with a locked bootloader on a VZW phone running 7.1.1.

Question for you sir, I have a Verizon Pixel XL with 7.1 build NDE63X.
My bootloader is UNLOCKED. My phone is notifying me that 7.1.1 update is available.
I just wanted confirmation that I can take this update without the risk of my bootloader re-locking?
Thanks in advance.

I'll defer this question to the more Verizon knowledgeable.
My suspicion is you're good to go but I'm only 70% sure about that.

It will not re-lock your bootloader. I'm on Verizon with the Verizon variant of the Pixel XL. I took the 7.1.1 update and my bootloader stayed unlocked.

is it possible to for someone to dump 7.1.2 unlocked bootloader rom to install as a OTA update via ADB?

It's not necessarily impossible --nobody seems to have a 100% understanding of what the dual slots are doing on this phone. People who were on custom Roms and rooted have reported successfully taking a stock OTA update without boot looping their phones, although it did wipe out root and the custom recovery. But it's not a great idea to do it the way you suggest and basically hope you get lucky. You would be much better off unlocking the bootloader at least temporarily and flashing a full stock image from Google.

No, because you would not be able to properly sign the file you created so your phone would reject it. The whole Certificate signing thing is what I speak of, if the file isn't signed with a google cert the ota would fail.

Hi All,
I got a bestbuy/verizon pixel xl and am unable to unlock my bootloader to install TWRP and Root my pixel
So, while i was searching for methods to root without unlocking bootloader, i found articles on rooting without TWRP. Is this method still supported on 7.1.2 and Verizon set pixel?

You can not root it unless you unlock the bootloader. It has always been that way.

How do you know what version you have? I got my phone from Verizon but there is no bloat or Verizon anything on it. Could I possibly have a variant that can be unlocked?

Simple, go to Setting/About phone, and tab the Build number text 5 times. Go back to Setting and select Developer options. If the OEM unlocking option is grayed out, it's a Verizon Pixel/XL, if you can toggle the slidder on and off, it's a Google Pixel/XL and can be bootloader unlocked anytime you want, regardless of update.
Seeing as how you purchased it directly from Verizon, I'm fairly certain it's a Verizon Pixel/XL. Any phone purchased directly from Google's Online Store, will always have the option to unlock their bootloader whenever they want.
Thank you. Unfortunately it is gray.

You may have to call Google. I think that some versions sold/purchased in the EU have a 6 month waiting period before they can get an unlocking code ?

If it originally came from EE it is locked, but EE can unlock it. Did you factory reset it? That also was a bug and the reset cleared it.

Factory reset it then connect to the internet. Early on Google shipped a bunch that had this problem. The fixed it on their end but it requires a fact reset.

Just to be clear, being SIM unlocked and bootloader unlocked are two completely different things. Are you sure the advertising for it being "unlocked" wasn't referring to the SIM status?

I looked for the cid of the phone and it appears that the phone isn't from Verizon. And the seller also told me that he bought the phone from Google store
It's likely the previous owner tried to unlock the bootloader and failed. By the looks of things the only current way to fix it is RMA to Google.

What version of android is it currently on?
After the factory reset, did you set the phone up at all, or just go to settings to try and enable it?
Set the phone up, connect it to WiFi and let it update system apps. You dont have to set the phone up completely, but let it connect to the internet and update.
Once thats done reboot it and skip thru any setup then go to settings and enable dev options and see if it is toggle-able.
Also make sure you are using the latest adb/fastboot.

Try flashing the latest factory images with the Google flash tool. If that doesn't work, then you've probably bought a Verizon one (or one of those ones customized by FBI to track criminals, lol).
