Debloating System Apps - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

The gesture navigations from android 10 cannot be enabled on 3rd party launchers. Nova launcher said they cannot fix as there's a function which literally checks if the launcher is a system app and greys out the gesture control.
I am rooted and trying to clean up system apps so I could set nova launcher to system app.
I cannot uninstall them from titanium backup as it says failed to locate apk. I cannot uninstall them from adb shell using su & pm uninstall ...
Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

what if you systemize Nova Launcher by magisk (App Systemizer)?

I just have 2.88MB free space in the system partition. Which is why I was trying to remove some system apps. I even manually tired removing the apks from the system path using solid explorer. but it doesn't work.

I think you'll find that with Android 10, access to the system partition had changed. It's now mounted at / instead of /system. AFAIK, you need to use a Magisk module to systemize an app.

[Q] pm disable built-in apps in ICS stock

I have ICS FD05. In adb shell, with root, when I run:
Code:
pm disable com.sec.android.app.snsaccountfb
or any other built in app, it just segfaults...
I remember i could disable some of those apps using pm disable in GB...
You can actually do this without terminal now. Just go to applications and find the one you want to disable and disable it.
Or you could just as easily uninstall it given that you're rooted.
Thanks for the tip. But the disable button is gray. And I also noticed the size of the app is 0.00b. I'm wondering if it's active at all.
Would titanium backup be smart enough to uninstall it?
Yeah TB will uninstall it. Not sure why the app would be 0.00KB unless it's 'uninstalled' already. Not sure if you remember that old issue where you would uninstall something from the system and the icon would have this grayed out icon of an sdcard. Either that or the pm disable is causing it.
Yeah i see a lot of apps in the list that are 0.00kb. I'm wondering if it has do with the fact that it's a leak, or it's just how ICS is...
But TB got rid of the ones I wanted.
Thanks for the help!
I don't think 0.00kb is how much space the app takes up, rather it is how much "cache/data" the app has created.
I use an app called system tuner pro. It is pretty helpfull. You can freeze apps, that way they dont run, you can also disable apps at startup. It also has a one-click option to wipe cache and dalvik cache. I have been using that a lot with ics since there isnt a good recovery. I will move or replace system apps with root explorer, then go into system tuner and wipe cache and dalvik, the reboot and tada!!! new themed apps (I did an inverted version of the 4.0.4 Mms.apk with split 160 for anyone who wants to know)

I'll definitely look into that! Do you have a post with your inverted apps?
I will send you a link if you want....I havent posted them, and probably wont because I dont want to keep up with another thread.

Integrating Android System Webview as system app

So, there were some updates to system apps on my G4 (H815T-HKG), and I decided to integrate them into the system ROM.
One of them was Android System Webview, which a bunch of other programs depend on. But then I later discovered that the version I had integrated was causing a bunch of apps to crash (including text apps).
So then I uninstalled it and installed a version that works from here. However, it only works as a user app.
If I try to move the folder from /data/app/ to /system/app/ and change the permissions to 755 and reboot, it doesn't appear in the list of installed programs, and programs that rely on it crash.
I tried converting it to a system app with Titanium Backup too, but it just seems to get stuck and I have to manually stop Titanium Backup, then reinstall Android System Webview again.
Well, I decided to mount the rooted system image on a linux machine and copy the original WebViewGoogle folder from it to the /system/app folder on my G4, and it works - although it's not an up-to-date version (43.0.2357.121), it at least means there's A version which will be there if I need to delete the user data.

cant uninstall system apps

Guys, I'm rooted with magisk and I want to remove system apps like youtube. I used system app remover for it and it always fails, any idea how to do it?
Try root uninstaller. Always worked with me.
I've always used root uninstaller on all my devices until this one. It says something along the lines of "sorry, root privilege found but cannot mount system r/w " so it will only allow me to disable apps. Root essentials on the other hand won't disable apps but will allow me to uninstall system apps except for Google, which I had to manually delete the folder and apk for.

You can use Titanium Backup to do so, uninstall and reboot to confirm, Just make sure the app is not disabled before you uninstall it.

Thanks it really works.

I had the same problem, too. I tried several apps but the uninstalled ones magical appear again after reboot.
The only thing that worked for me was to install the magisk module " terminal debloater " here on XDA.
Now they are gone.

Can't remove Nova launcher

I had made Nova into a system app via titanium with root. Now I want to switch back to regular pixel launcher but I am unable to uninstall Nova. I've tried via titanium browser move to user app, and then uninstall. It says it has moved to user data but doesn't seem to really work. I uninstall and then it just keeps coming back.
Any ideas?

Have you tried using your root browser and delete the apk?

Yeah. Even after settings system r/w it fails to delete.
Titanium uninstall completes, but on reboot Nova returns.

If you convert it back to a data app, you might me able to remove it via the playstore. Unless your using a beta build. You should be able to remove it via adb as well. I just don't remember the command atm

Make sure you don't have Nova setup as a Device Admin in Settings -> Security.

[Solved] Restoring apps in data after switch to LOS

Hello guys, I'm thinking of switching from MIUI to LOS or Syberia. To do that I need to format the /data partition. I really don't want to re-install all my apps again, so is there a way to restore the data partition not as an image, but as file structure? I have TWRP backups but they're images of the partition. Do I need to install Titanium Backup or similar?
What would be the best course of action here?
Thanks in advance!
Try migrate on play store

Play Store indeed has a list of all the apps I have installed. However all the data that's in the app's settings will be gone.
Here's an example - I use a Launcher app. If I re-install it from Play Store, all icon arrangements, wallpaper settings, all other settings within the Launcher will be gone.
What I'm trying to achieve is once the /data partition is formatted, ideally I'll just need to copy paste the data (files and folders) back in again. Partition restore won't work as it will mess up the LOS (or any other non-MIUI OS) installation.
The TWRP backup gives me an image file, which can be extracted to apps and folders, but I'm not sure I can just copy paste that over to the /data folder(partition). Main concern is permissions. Would they be automatically set on OS boot?

Titanium backup is hard to beat. You can copy your back up folder onto your pc and copy it back over after the wipe to restore your app data.

He actually means Migrate as it's an app on Play Store. The app is sort of like Titanium Backup but free.

Thanks, I misunderstood the reply. Migrate indeed looks like the app that will do the job. I'll give it a shot.
Thanks again!
Quick update - I am now on LOS 16 and used Migrate. A few apps gave errors (Telegram is one of them) so I uninstalled and installed them back from Play Store. But that's nothing really. I loaded the launcher amd saw all my icons back where I left them... Amazing!
