Heyo
I used to have a Huawei p8 lite (had it for like 2 years) but now i finally upgraded to a pixel 3. About a year ago I was really active here, and was flashing a new custom ROM on that phone like every week. It ended up getting treble support, which was cool, but half the treble GSIs (and all pie and upwards GSIs) didn't work because of huawei's HAL etc. Eventually I fell out of the community and stopped tinkering with the phone. This was due to a mix of lack of development, no free time, and a lack of interest tbh. Anyway, now that I have this pixel 3, I'm thinking of getting back into it. Im currently still 100% stock (no unlocked bootloader, no root) and using the official android 10 update. Do you guys reccomend any ROMs, is there anything I should be aware of romming this phone and do you know if magisk works on stock android 10?
Also are there any telegram groups y'all reccomend I join?
Thanks! And hello pixel 3 community ?

Don't listen to the others. The P3 is a stellar phone... one of the best you can own. The first thing you should do is unlock the bootloader. Even if you never root the phone, simply unlocking it makes it virtually un-brickable. Because unlocking will wipe the phone, the sooner you do it less time is wasted on set up time. If you are interested in rooting, first make absolutely sure you are on the latest adb/fastboot binaries. There is a new version for September (29.0.3) Clear out any old versions you may have installed before and do a version check to be sure. This is important. Yes Magisk works perfectly on 10. Get on the Canary build of Magisk Manager and read up on rooting 10 as the process has another step or two but not difficult at all. Just read through it before starting. After that the world is your oyster. First apps I add are AdAway, Nova Launcher, Titanium Backup, EX Kernel Manager and Solid Explorer. The stock ROM rooted and EX kernel is good enough for me, and monthly updates (on 3 Pixel phones) is all the fun I am looking for. Best of luck and welcome back to XDA. Enjoy your new phone.

Things are broken down into several posts.
I would stay fully stock. I don't see much benefits rooting android 10 I haven't run into any major glitches or bugs everything is pretty stable. Back in the Nexus One days battery life was pretty mediocre so rooting was a must just to get some extra juice.

Yet many of the basics I rely on require root. Adaway is the first app installed. ACC (battery management) is the second app installed.
It's all in how you "use" your device.

Thanks for the helpful post. I have a P2XL and recently also purchased a P3XL. I am going to use both. I have P2XL rooted and all apps installed EXCEPT Adaway.
Could you please provide any information on how to install Adaway? My P2XL is completely rooted, with ElementalX. TWRP recovery and Stock ROM. I've already unlocked the bootloader for P3XL. I'm going to be rooting it today. My understanding is that there is NO TWRP custom recovery possible yet on P3XL.
Anyway, is there a way to install Adaway on both of these phones? The Ads have been sucking my blood and totally kills the experience of browsing IMO. Thanks in advance.

Adaway is a free app, maintained by PerfectSlayer HERE . You simply sideload it, and then allow root access. So... root the P3XL first by using MM (canary) to patch a stock boot.img ->fastboot flash that to your phone and once you have confirmed MM is reporting you are rooted and up to date, simply sideload the Adaway.apk. Best of luck. :good:

Thank you so much. Just installed Adaway on my P2XL and it works perfect. Will install on P3XL as soon as I root. Appreciate all the instructions.
Since you seem to be so knowledgeable - one question on P3XL.
Is there any way to have an indicator that the battery is charging when connected to a charger? On P3XL there is NO notification light. On my P2XL I was using light Manager. It would turn the LED green or red depending on the charge level. I would have red light for charge below 65%, green light for charge between 65% and 90% and blue light for 90%+ (fully charged). It was a GREAT way to figure out whether the phone was charging or not and how much it was charged, without unlocking it.
Is there anything possible for Pixel 3 XL? Right now when connected to a charger there is no indication that the phone is charging. Also I cannot see the battery % level without unlocking my phone. I prefer to keep the battery between 65% and 85% for max lifespan and it was easy to do that in P2XL because of the notification LED and light manager. Anything similar possible in P3XL? Or any other way to get around it? Thanks.

Nothing that I know of for the lockscreen. Pretty sure the LED is gone for the P3XL. You may play around with Accubattery though. It has an adjustable charging level so you get a notification when the phone reaches your predetermined charge level. It *may* also have a lockscreen icon to indicate charge? GL
@iamjimmy
For battery management, since you're rooted, check out Advanced Charging Controller. This app will manage battery charging automatically. You can either just install the app and manage through the app, or use the command line.
I do some involved controlling through tasker so when I'm using navigation in the car, the battery stays at 42%, but then when I'm about an hour from my destination it goes to 80%. Typically, I leave my phone on a wireless charger stand when not using it and keep the charge between 70-80%.

Thanks so much for the app link. There doesn't seem to be much description in the GIThub and I'm reading through the thread.
So basically this app has to be installed from a terminal emulator? I downloaded the zip but I guess this is not a standard APK.
Also I'm guessing I can use this APP to just charge my phone to 85% and stop charging. No matter how long it is connected to the charger?
My whole point is to never let the phone be charged over 80 to 85%. With my Pixel2XL it is easy with the lightmanager app and one can set custom colors when the charge threshold is reached. The notification LED changes colors: So you can immediately unplug. Why the hell did Google remove the LED from Pixel 3 XL?
---------- Post added at 11:36 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:32 AM ----------
Also I got the Pixel3 XL for $599. My pixel 2 XL works very well, but I was getting bored and needed a new phone. Now I'm feeling guilty spending the $599 since the Pixel 4 is around the corner. '
I'm having a very hard time dealing with the huge notch of P3XL. Other than that the screen and colors are far better than P2XL.

Acc is set it and forget it. But also allows very powerful customization. I would suggest starting with the app, since I'm guessing you want some time to figure things out.
Get the app (for now) from the assets link on the GitHub page I linked for the app. Soon it will be available on fdroid.

Hi. I've been using the ACC app. I set the default profile to 85% charge threshold.
However, the phone does not STOP charging at 85%. Also in the ACC app the battery % is not accurate. It reports 75% when the actual is closer to 85%.
Any clues on how to fix this? Also how does this app get uninstalled? Is it the standard android uninstallation - or is something special needed? Thanks.

I was able to eq/tune the bluetooth audio in my car perfectly using V4A on my last bunch of LG phones that were rooted. I just bought the Pixel 2 XL from Verizon knowing that the bootloader had been locked (WTF Google, why do you allow carriers to do that? - isn't the whole idea of Google phones that they are unadulterated Android?) because it appeared to be the best phone for my other music endeavors (Audio Evolution Mobile multi-track recording).
I saw some mention that it will run if SELinux is in permissive mode. Is there a way to do that manually after each reboot and then enable V4A?
Thanks

The short answer is no. I know you can change selinux with adb, however, V4A needs root to function properly. I definitely agree with you though on the Verizon/Google thing. I'm a Big Red user as well, but haven't purchased a device directly from them in 4 years for the reason you stated. And, unfortunately, it'll likely only get worse! ?

Just to touch on this, the bootloader has nothing to do with Android itself. The P2XL is still "unadulterated" Android. The Verizon units have the locked bootloader because that was the price Google had to pay in order to get the phone in the Verizon store. AT&T wouldn't have been much better, and the other two carriers aren't large enough to think about.
This "unadulterated" complaint isn't new. The Nexus 6 encountered this in 2014, because models sold in the AT&T store were carrier locked, though the bootloader was unlockable.

Thanks, good tip on buying from Google next time. I bought this one from Verizon because they knocked $300 off the price and there are 3 other Android users in the family I can pass this one to.
The Pixel 2 XL sound over bluetooth to my car's Pioneer DEH-80PRS is quite good. The highs are clear without harshness, the frequency response is flat. I'm also getting plenty of gain using the supplied dongle with Shure e5c IEM's.

As a long suffering Samsung and LG bloatware eradicator I'm grateful that I was able to eliminate the 3 or 4 VZW additions in a few minutes. No NFL running in the background - reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Bart claims he is being controlled by MLB until their satellite crashes in the backyard
I use Nova Launcher (although the launcher that came with the Pixel 2 XL seemed OK) so I'm able to tweak the behavior mostly how I want it. I originally started flashing ROMs to get around VZW restrictions placed on the phones. Especially for GPS when I was on Windows phones.

You can run Viper4Android without root. However, you need a rooted device to install it.
To install Viper4Android, follow these steps;
1. Download Busybox on your android device.
2. After downloading install Busybox. It will ask permission for root, simply grant the permission. Busybox will be installed on your device.
3. Now, Download ViPER4Android and then (more)

Having an unlocked model I genuinely forget that Verizon models install a few apps. The good news is that, as you found out, they're removable.
The P2XL is the first device I own to not have a custom ROM on it, though it is rooted. I, like virtually everyone else who has been here for years, would root Android to add features that were missing. Android 8.1 was the first version of Android to have sufficient features to make a custom ROM unnecessary. There are things I would like to see in a stock ROM such as a reboot menu with the option to reboot into recovery or the bootloader, but those are minor things which apps can compensate for. Like you, I use Nova, not just for its customization features but also because I disable the stock launcher in order to remove the horizontal recents screen.

Agreed. It would be great to be able to root my VZW Pixel 2 XL for things like being able to access the Google Play Music playlist database directly (to backup) but other than small things like that I'm very satisfied with Android 8.1.

So after extensive research and and ahhing I've finally committed and purchased an A2 Lite.
the ummming and ahhing now is if I should root or not?
I've rooted my phones since my first HTC Desire (the original one) so that I've got the "raw" Android experience with none of the horrible skins or bloatware.
Given the A2 Lite is Android One is it worth rooting? I don't add any really fancy add ons like exposed and I think the main thing I'll miss is using adaway to remove all those horrible advertisements.
Is it worth just unlocking the bootloader (this should still "bypass" most non-rooted checking apps shouldn't it?) when I first get it so that if I do decide to root later I don't lose everything ?
I assume there's been other people in the same situation.
Ideas, thoughts, comments collective gurus?
unlocking the bootloader wipes all data
so for me
its better to unlock the bootloader first because i love having the option to root etc. without losing my data
if i want to sell it or have it repaired just re-lock the bootloader by flashing the stock rom.
its all comes down to your personal preference
im waiting for good custom ROM before i root the phone. until then i can recommend blokada addblocker. no root needed and very effective.

Same here bro.
V4A + kernel config.
Is it possible to brick A2 Lite while rooting/installing custom rom whatever and not recover from it?
My last 2 phones were Nexus, so basically they were 100% safe. If by some kind of software mistake you bricked them, you could always clean flash factory image and that's it, no way you could render it unusable.
I don't have experience with rooting/custom roms/kernels/recovery outside Nexus phones, so my question is: can you ruin A2 Lite by bricking it and not being able to recover?
And also, is official factory image for A2 Lite (Android One version) available somewhere online (official site, like we have for nexus/pixel phones)?
Thanks for replies folks.
After reading through all the posts in this forum and the "issues" with OTA's etc, I've decided to leave this as a virgin device when I receive it, ( out for delivery with courier...waiting...waiting..), not even going to unlock the bootloader.
I've removed adaway and loaded blockada on my current Find 7a and it's working a treat. Root reason number 1 - tick.
The other root app I remembered I use is LMT (small hands), and Simple Pie is doing the job really well. Root reason number 2 - tick
App backup from Titanium to Mybackup - Root reason number 3 - tick
Will wait and see how the AOSP development goes and if I find anything I really need root for and cross that bridge when I get to it.
Onwards and upwards. Will officially be a member of the A2 Lite crew soon...... (looking out the window every few minutes )
Hey there
My girlfriend bought a Mi a2 Lite today and before setting it up, I would like to work out a few things:
- I want her to have a working gcam on it, because I read that the low-light performance of the stock cam was really bad.
--> Apart from that I don't see any reason to root the phone. So: Is there a stable non-root-version of gcam? or would you still advice me to root?
Thanks for your replys

In the end a pig with lipstick stays a pig. IMO enabling GCAM isn't worth the hassle, especially not if you go with stock rom due to focus problems with Android Pie. GCAM might be a tiny little bit better compared to the stock camera app, but its main advantages only shine if you use different tweaked settings for all your different needs. There is no install, forget and have superb pictures GCAM version!
You can temporary root the phone to enable the needed camera API for GCAM. GCAM itself doesn't need root at all. Just check the guides section!
Edit: You might try Open Camera from the Play Store, it has lots of options even without Camera2 API.
Hi there, thanks for your advice! After posting here I quickly read into how to root. It turned out to be really easy, so I just went ahead (mainly for youtube vanced and adaway). Then I did this cam2api thing and tried out a few Gcams. You're right, stuff doesn't work: the interface and all worked fine, but the photos wouldn't be saved to the phone... I know that the image quality wouldn't drastically improve, but I guess night sight (terribly pictures with the stock cam in low light...) and motion photos are very cool features. But it seems that there are no really working versions available for pie...

If you're still rooted, you should check out Viper4Android (Magisk module) for great sound improvements.
Beware of taking OTA updates while rooted (or for example adaway without systemless hosts). Your system partitions need to be untouched, else your update fails or your device might become even soft bricked.

Thanks, I switched off automatic updates. As for Viper4Android, I've tried that on my Pixel 3, didn't really impress me. However, the sound on the Pixel 3 is already great. If you have specific settings/profiles for Mi a2, that would be very nice
cheers
I'm using the following headphone (ear-buds) settings, they sound pretty good with Rock/Metal stuff.

I root my phone is for Greenify, Battery Charge Limit App.
If you want to root, take note that time and effort is required to install OTA update.
Sometime I think the time and effort spent is not worth the benefit.
And you might not able to use some banking app or ewallet even with Magisk Hide.
I'm really quite disappointed with the gcam ports. I've tested the most famous ones and they are all very unreliable and the features I was looking for don't work (motion photos, hdr, selfie-cam).
Are they more stable on android 8? --> is there hope for a stable and reliable version?

IMO the camera sensors of our phone are just crap, even 3 years older budget phones like the Moto G4 do far better pictures.
This guide was designed for S10 series, but the majority of the Guide of course is applicable to all android Pie devices as if based on apks and adb debugging, you shall test at your own desire. For adb debugging to be enabled, go to: About Phone > built number > tap until you unlock "developers option" go back and and inside "developers options" enable "adb debugging" from there.
First and foremost, I would like to express how I am amazed with the level of customization you can do without root on a Samsung nowadays, as I've been an android/samsung user for quite some time its really something to consider.
Okay, now lets cut the chase. What I really did is to put together different applications, tips and miscellaneous information together in order to achieve what I felt the most customized Device possible without root and that I think lots of users could still absorve all or at least part of this guide in their own devices.
1) First, what I did what to go through the Battery Optimisation Guide by @Corv0, which honestly speaking led me to an average of 9-10 SoT.
1.1 Even though people talk alot how they liked OneUI I cant change from Nova Launcher, its simply the ultimate Launcher experience. I recommend getting the prime version, totally worth it and you get it for life.
1.2. If you are used to Adway, you know we can't live anymore without it, but in times without root, Blokada is for me the best alternative. I also found it better and more stable than Adhell and does not need key update every now and then, thats lame!
2)If you like music and once used Ressurection Remix roms, you must have fallen in love with Pulse music bar. It simply reinvigorates the navigation bar. As an alternative I must suggest the well known Navbar app. For me its a must to change navigation bar color and enable their music visualizer.
3) If you once used xposed in a samsung, you might remember the Samtweak, and now you can have it in Pie without the need of root with great function like 180 degrees reverse (which I find very useful when using headphone jack so it does not bother you against the chest for instance), volume warning, navigation and status bar hide, etc
4) Another must in S10 plus is to use Button Mapper. Some may talk about Bixby Action app, but Button mapper is the ultimate deal with many more options, check video link.
5) Okay this is more of a personal preference, which is my case I can say: sometimes I use it, sometimes I don't. If you didn't like/ didn't get used to the front camera cutout I strongly suggest to use Status Bar and change status background color to black. I find it do the job of hiding the front camera pretty decent and improved a lot indoor and low light experience as you cant see the cutout almost never.
6) Last (so far) but not least important, if of course the installation and usage of Nice Lock (for the ones without access to Good Lock). I think we may can it as an official customization app for samsung devices. It almost made me remember Rice tweaks app. I personally like to use 7.1) Task Changer mod to change recent apps back to vertical. 7.2) Navistar to fully customize the navigation bar with different icons and 2 more buttons. The rest I didn't really use it but I suggest you install them all and see what's useful to you.
I will record a video and post it here (probably tomorrow) to show all these changes and tweaks I did and how they actually appear on my device.
------- v2 (April 26th):
Actually these are "tweaks" I had already done before v1 but simply forgot to mention on the original post however to keep things in order I will continue the numbering:
7) Bloatware removal, this is another must you have to do, specially when talking about samsung, with is known for the amount of apps its included from stock. And within this link you can easily do it through adb shell. Big thanks to @Neo3D for this amazing guide.
7.1) Once you "debloat" your device, make sure you deinstall/deactivate youtube standard version as well, and install the well known and amazing Youtube Vanced (Non Root version of course). In addition, set it as standard so it will be fully integrated to the links.
Well those are my suggestions for the customization of s10 without root (so far). If you have more tips please comment down below.
Video is up, check comment for exact cue by "tweak": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_giH6O6-Pdo
Great guide for the S10 XDA gang! Kudos
Nice guide.

Doesn't bloat removal cause more battery drain? I mean when the phone tries to find a certain package and cannot it is starting to heat up and etc
I started out early in the process and I was able to get Adhell running .... Seems like maybe my battery was worse after Adhell. Wondering if you guys thought, based on this guide, I should get rid of Adhell and go more this direction (for ad blocking and app/bloatware freezing) ?

I tried both and found blokada much more stable. You can try and compare yourself, its way easier to install and get it running as well.
Also, using Blokada and it works well...

if the s10+ com.samsung.android.knox.containercore isn't installed at 0 then how can I remove the number one bloatware I so desired to remove?

Search Cswm app manager (for Samsung) on play store
Good!!
Hi, I just got a Note 10+ and I haven't transferred over to it yet. I was playing around with it and before I knew it, the Android 11 update was pushed to it and as y'all know it forces it's way in even after you disable it. So far with minimal apps and no sim card, the phone seems fine. There are some missing edge panels I can't access anymore in the galazy store or google play for that matter.
That being said, are people here generally happy about Android 11? What are some well knwon issues?
I have been skeptical about Samsung phones since my Note 8 to Note 9. As they get updates, the phones start running more clunky. Almost like they purposefully want you to upgrade.
Android 11 (one UI 3.1) is all I know on this phone. I came from the Note 4 and S5. Just got my Note 10 as well with Android 9 and two days later did a system update to Android 11. For me, it was about 10 updates in a row and 2 or 3 of them were roughly 2GB. I should have done factory reset before doing the updates, but then again, I didn't have the phone that long before doing it. I wish there was a setting for the transparency on the notification pull down, apps drawer, recent apps, etc but's faily tastefully done. They give the option to change the tranpsarncy on the lock screen but not the main screen which is backwards. I don't like the new fat vertical volume sliders. They look nice but harder to use because your finger's in the way. LOL. The horizontal ones were wider than these are tall. Some say Android 11 is slower and harder on the battery. The battery life isn't as good as I hoped.
I don't have issues with Edge Screens missing in the Galaxy Store in Android 11. Never used Google Play for edge screens. but then again, I never used Edge Screens before, so I wouldn't know what was missing.
One thing I noticed right off the bat is the brightness of the Note10 isn't as bright when the brightness slider is set to the same position as my ancient S5. I put the display setting on Vivid and the white balance/gamma is too red. I put the Cool/Warm slider all the way to Cool and it's still a tad Red.

THere was this edge screen app called Edgeboard that used to be available and was available on my Note 9. It's no longer available
So battery life is shorter and Note 10+ is slower on Android 11. FFS
I don't see Edgeboard in the Galaxy Store. Just repeating what little I read about Android 11 and battery life and performance. Maybe others can chime in. I'm sure it's mentioned in this forum in detail.
Pie is so much better.
I'll never leave 10 or 11 load on my 10+ which is a fast and very stable platform that's running very well. Security is more than adequate.
Some of my best trusted app's functionality be destroyed by the it.
It's big sister crapware

Overlays allowed, no cpu cycle robbing scoped storage, trusted apps like Karma Firewall's logging feature is fully functional.
For a few perks you trade major functionality in the name of security and privacy.
When Google is the biggest imbedded privacy issue to begin with.
As for security... no saving a dumb bunny.
Sorry Gookill, I'm not buying it

Ah I don't even know what any of those things are. I've been out of the Rooting business for a while. I don't know what those items I bolded would do for me

I gave you an app example of an overlay and one reason why scoped storage is undesirable.
Here's what I can see in Karma running on Pie.

That was a stock one I think... be careful what you allow to update or flash.
If you have a fast, stable platform that is fulfilling its mission, leave it be.

That sounds good but again these updates are forced down your throat. Did you mention a program that can block them?

You need to block the carrier update apk. Conversely if it downloads clearing the system cache (or maybe a factory reset) should clear it if it hasn't flashed yet. Last ditch effort and not a good long term solution.
If you avoid/ turn off wifi to stop the update that won't work forever because the update apk can turn on wifi and any other apks it needs as well as certain towers (AT&T probably other carriers too) are "update" towers that will download the update fast.
I use a package disabler to keep my updater neutered. https://www.packagedisabler.com/
An ADB edit is also another way to get it done on a unrooted stock phone.
Carriers like AT&T can block updates on their end if you pester them enough
Get it done asap whichever solution you choose.
When I switch to a banking app (e.g. Revolut) to authorize a purchase by a debit or credit card, the merchant website with the authorizing process gets killed in the background. When I switch back after authorizing the payment in my banking app the merchant website is dead and the payment failed. This happens with websites (Chrome) as well as payments within apps. My workout is to open both apps in splitscreen mode but some apps like Revolut do not support splitscreen or behaves buggy (Klarna).
I am using stock android 10. Any suggestions?

Just curious, would you mind telling me about your experience with Havoc? How are you finding it? ...I've been tempted to try flashing a custom rom (for the first time) cuz of the bad ram management of stock rom, but i'm not sure about which one to choose.

Havoc is much better than stock at keeping apps active even if you switch to a different one. Also if you flash the Gapps version, it's the only custom rom (I found) that works with Android Auto.
I get good battery life for an almost 4 year old phone, and even if I keep it running for over 20 days without rebooting, the speed remains the same. Which was not the case on stock (I needed to reboot at least once a week or it would slow down)
Of course, your mileage may vary depending on the number and type of apps you have installed.

First of all thanks a ton for answering so fast, fr. You pretty much convinced me to give it a shot. I was wondering, can you give me any directions in order to go install it? I never flashed before, so if you got any tips i'd highly appreciate. Also do you have any bugs to report, cause I've looked around and i always see people complaining about issues with banking apps/camera/fingerprint scanner/audio and so on...is it your case too?
On a sidenote, what about kernels? Do you use a custom one along with the rom? And the updates, do you have to reflash it everytime a new version is available or is it built-in?
Sorry for the wall of questions, and thank you for your time already.

I flashed the kernel included with the rom. Updates are OTA, so no need to reflash, it will silently install and update.
Flashing instructions can be found here https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/stable-havoc-os-rom-r-android-11-0-official-mi-a2-lite.4282247/
Support is available on Telegram by the community and the maintainer (this link may or may not work: https://t.me/c/1244092342/35304 )
As far as bugs are concerned, I had one major issue 2 or 3 releases ago: Android Auto stopped working due the the fact that the Gapps package was changed a bit. I reached out to the maintainer and he sent me a custom installation ZIP the next day. It worked again and following releases had Android Auto back in them.
