Note 8 verse note 10 + - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Questions & Answers

This may help decide if you have the 8

I had the note 8, gave it to my wife, only thing I miss is the hard press home button, but i'll get used to it.

I also had N8 and gave it to my wife. I pretty much agree with the video review and I hope you're right about Note 10 not selling, so maybe in the future Samsung won't make a mistake like that again. If they want to have cheaper (but not really) Note for masses, do what Crapple did and make Galaxy S compatible with S-pen and leave Note line as flagship it always was.

Wow! I too just set up my Note 8 for the wife. After using the Note 10+ for two weeks mostly blacked out through Hex, running all gesture controlled through Nova and one hand + and this beautiful screen the Note 8 looks and feels a lot older than just 2 years. I also got her the galaxy fit with my $150.00 in accessories.

Should I buy Galaxy Note 8 or the upcoming 10.1 (2014)?

Hi all,
I am looking into buying a Samsung Galaxy Note series tablet, as a key feature for me is the ability to take hand written notes with the S-pen. So clearly, I have two choices, if I want to stick with the current hardware cycle: Galaxy Note 8 or the upcoming Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 edition). I primarily want to use the tablet to take notes in class, and to read PDF files and comment etc. on the PDF files.
I wanted to ask you guys what should I buy? Firstly, I would like if you can answer me the following: Is the 8 inch screen on the galaxy note 8 big enough to comfortably take notes in a classroom (my use case would be notes in a university classroom, relatively fast paced).
Now in my eyes, the pros of the Galaxy note 8 are:
1. It is already available. It's been out for a while and so I know real world usage and of any existent bugs etc. It already got a price cut.
2. Much cheaper than the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014.
3. Has decent specs, and from my experience handwriting feels more natural than the old galaxy note 10.1.
4. More portable than the larger 10 inch one.
Also pros for the Galaxy note 10.1 2014 would be:
1. Far more powerful than the 8. Latest and greatest, so no worries on being outdated.
2. Larger screen, probably even better at handwriting.
So what would be best for my usage? Will I be well catered for with the cheaper Galaxy tab 8 for taking notes? Is it snappy and powerful enough? Or should I wait and buy the 10 inch one, that is far more expensive and we dunno real world usage issues and bugs?
Please let me know. Thanks!
$549 for the 16GB model, and $599 for 32GB for upcoming Note 10.1, ....I was planing to get one as 10 inch tablet replacement for my 2 year old Galaxy Tab 10.1, but after seeing the prices,..i decided to wait and see what Google will come up with Nexus 10...I know it won't have SPen....

Do you use the Galaxy Tab Note 8 for writing notes? Is it too small for note taking purposes?

you know, I have Nexus 7, ....it is a beautiful tablet, pure android, gets freq update from Google, but my problem I found it is a little small...I have 10 inch tablet, found it is a little big, and it seems like 8 inch tablets are in a perfect spot as far as size goes; it is neither too small, nor too big...of course, it is all about personal preference...that's why I picked Galaxy Tab Note 8 WiFi....I don't quite often use writing notes with SPen, but when I do needed, I am glad that it has SPen, and it is near perfect for taking note on Note 8, when I tried that on Note 10.1, i found it a bit awkward since taking note using SPen on 10 inch tablet does not feel natural. However, if you are artist, and doing a lot of drawing, it is no brainer that big screen is a big plus.
so keep it short; if you are after a tablet that mainly use taking notes and looking for portable, easily fit your hand, not so bulky, then your option is Note 8.0, and Note 8.0 hardware specs not bad at all too. but if you are artist (a lot of drawing, painting, video editing, etc..), then new Note 10.1 is probably good fit.
like I said in my previous post, I was planing to replace my 2 year old galaxy tab 10.1 inch tablet with new Note 10.1 tablet, but until I saw the prices for 32GB, I am giving a sec though whether paying that premium high price worth or not.
I use mine in class at a university all the time I take video of the professor insert in my own notes as well as pictures and so on. It's perfect for that type of application. The s pen is quick to recognize handwriting and pretty accurate once you use it enough you'll really be impressed with what it can do. It's a great tablet for this purpose.

I think I will give this one last test drive at BestBuy and just buy it!
I think I will be happy to save about $200 buying this rather than buying the more expensive 10.1..
By the way, are there any deals currently to get this at a lower price point than $359? Thanks

I bought mine from Staples for $259 with discounts. In the forum, there is a coupon for $75 off (from Staples). It expires on September 28.

But there is no Staples near me with that tablet in stock!
I'm surprised no one has said "it depends on you" yet. I've actually owned both a Note 10.1 and now the Note 8.0. I obviously can't speak to the 10.1 2014, but the thing I disliked about the 10 was the weight and the charge time. The larger screen was nice for watching movies, but the weight made it suck for watching a full length feature film. As for the stylus part, the Note 10 seems better for artwork, but crappier for writing.
What I like about the Note 8 is the weight, charge time, and it is much better for taking notes. I use it all the time for taking notes now. The screen, while smaller, is much more crisp too.
I can say that I would not buy the Note 10.1 2014 on launch day though. Just look at the Note 8. Released at $399, within like a month you could get it for $349. Now I've frequently seen it for $299. That's a pretty big cut for a device that hasn't been around long. I'm guessing the new 10 would be similar. Give it 3-4 months and you'll get a substantial savings. Unless of course money is no object to you.

Well everyone. I am very thankful for your replies. It gave me a LOT better picture of the whole thing. I dived right in and bought the Galaxy Note 8 for a measly $238 after taxes thanks to the amazing offer from Staples. It will be here by next week so unfortunately I can't play around with it yet! But yeah, I've tried the tablet several times in stores, found that the stylus is a lot more crisp in response than the old 10.1 and display is pretty good too. I think at this price point, buying a note 8 was definitely the more sensible option, I can't choke down the $549 price of the Note 10.1. And I really don't want to wait months for the price to go down. I need a tablet that can take notes right now...
at $600 I'd rather grab a windows tablet. i've got both 700t and 500t but i'llbe giving my daughter the 500t soon. $550 last year was really pushing it, but at $600 you've hit laptop pricing. i'llprobably grab another old 10.1 since the hardware is still pretty powerful and going for $300 refurb. I sold my old one for $300 earlier is year and regret it every day, lol.

For $238 Galaxy Note 8 is a steal. Lucky that you were able to get from Stable, since many stores sold out like crazy because of $75 off coupon...
it is weird that $75 off coupon only for samsung devices, I wonder if they are clearing the inventory for Samsung devices...
I received my Note 8 in a shipment today. This is the one I bought from Staples for $238 with all those discounts. But I noticed that the seal of the box was tampered with! It says clearly across the seal to not accept it if the seal is tampered. It looks fine inside, but do you think this is a refurb or a return??? How dare they ship me a used piece! I am supposed to get a brand new one :/
Also, I think I am having some trouble registering this device to at Samsung's galaxy perk website.. The perks are extended till December 31, so the deadline ain't the issue!

If you have a Staples store nearby, you could exchange it without any problem.
Hate Samsung because of not to release note 8 2014 at the same time of note 3 & note 10 2014.
Note 8 2013 was also, then it was configured similar to note 2 & note 10 2013, although 1/2 year later.

Decisions, decisions......

I am getting a new tablet. I have a nexus 7 first edition. I also have a i717 note. My question is- Do I get a lte nexus 7 2013 (will run on tmo's free 200 mg for life) , or a wifi Note 8, or a wifi galaxy tab 3 8inch. Those are the 3 I have been looking into. Anyone want to share their opinion? Thanks.

If it was me, it would be a binary decision. If you need S-Pen, Note 8. If not, then probably 8 in since I prefer that size. Plenty of threads talking about usefulness of the pen, but basically if you want to take notes, it's the only way to go, IMHO.
If you don't know if you need then pen, you probably don't.

I totally agree. The S pen is pure magic. It give like 40-50% added functionality to the note 8 along with multi-window. Without it, or if you don't need it, the note 8 is just simply overpriced....
If you do need the S-pen, I think the 8 inch size is the best form factor for portability and screen estate. The smaller phablets are just too small I think to adequately use the S-pen on a regular basis (unless you just like to scrible down mini notes) and the larger ones are just to cumbersome to carry around (unless you're a digital artist who really needs the canvas for sketches).
Thank you guys. I think you helped me make up my mind. I have had the original Note i717 for almost 2 years and hardly ever used that pen. I am looking more for easy portability so even though I do love the bigger screen, I think the way to go for me is the 7 inch. Just seems more pocketable and an easier throw in the purse and go gadget. I do appreciate your thoughts though. Thanks for sharing.
For me I wanted a phone dialer which ruled out the Nexus and gave me the choice of Samsung or the ASUS Fonepad.. I don't have any doubt that if you don't need a dialer, and don't need an SPen the Nexus 7 is the best value small tablet out there. The Galaxy Tabs are good vale and nice enough tablets, but not up to the Note 8 even without the spen. The main reason to get a Note 8 though as to be the spen.
@ Richard d- Does the note8 have a phone dialer??? You can make calls on the us version?? or Wifi over voip? Thanks!

I'm in the UK, but yes the 3G europe versions have a phone dialer, just like the 3G tabs - works just like any mobile phone (albeit a little on the large size ).
The US versions of the Note have the telephone capability removed. They are WiFi only, or LTE equipped (AT&T branded). They can only make phone calls via VoIP. The international versions of Samsung tablets are essentially smartphones.
I use a Note 8 N5100 as my phone on AT&T's network (it also works on T-Mobile). Since it's not designed to work in the US, it only has the HSPA frequencies not LTE. This works fine in my world, I value phone functionality more than download speed bragging rights.
That said, the Note 8 is really large for a daily driver. Unless you carry a purse or other bag with you as a constant companion, it's a little inconvenient when it comes to portability. A 7 inch tablet would be significantly easier to fit into my wardrobe. But that extra 1" fundamentally changes how apps work. The difference is not trivial: 7“ is essentially a large phone, while 8“ functions as a small tablet. To really see the impact of this, visit a store and check out the Tab 7 and Tab 8 side by side. For me, having the extra real estate is worth the hassle 99% of the time. The other 1% of the time, I have my number forwarded to a flip phone on a 2¢ min plan.
There are 7" tablets with telephony. The Asus Fonepad and Samsung Tab 7 (international version). Both can be had for significantly less than the Note 8.
I don't know why people keep comparing the Note 8 to the Nexus 7, then claim the Note 8 is overpriced. The Note 8 screen is larger, that in itself makes it cost more. The Note 8 also has more features than the Nexus 7 does. I own both and much prefer the Note 8. The pen is used for more than just writing also, plus its stored inside the tablet itself so its always there when you want it.
The Note 8 also is *not* large. You might as well use a phone if you want something smaller.

The price is actually close at the moment. The wifi Note 8 was just $30 more than the LTE nexus. But if you compare wifi to wifi, it is a lot more $$. If I don't like my Nexus 7, that's my next one to try. I was looking for smaller portability. But that 8 inch screen was very nice.
I went for the Nexus!

I never said the Note 8 was overpriced, I paid $570 for my N5100, and it was worth every penny. There is not another tablet on the market that I would prefer. That said, the Note 8 is significantly more expensive than the Nexus 7. In my opinion, the size difference is significant, and the Nexus 7 can be more easily accommodated than Note 8 for people that do not use bags/purses/backpacks, etc. Still, I like the Note 8, it's my phone!
I just picked up the Note 8
I had to see what I would be missing, so Now I have the nexus 7 lte and the note 8. I have till Jan 14th to decide what I will be bringing back. Best Buys return policy is now on holiday return schedule if purchased after Nov. 3rd. Items need to be returned by Jan 14th.
There is a whole bunch of freebies with the Note 8 tablet- $25 google play credit, 3 months hulu plus credit, sat radio, etc. Link explains it.

NO new Note 8 +

Well it looks for sure that we will not get a new Note 8 model.
For those of us who love it, it is a big disappointment but I've read many places it didn't sell that well.
Somehow I don't believe that as 8 inch is the sweet spot in tablets and the stylus beats all the competition.
Has anyone gone to the Note 10 2014 or the Note 12.2?
What great advantage do they have?
They certainly don't have the portability and handiness of the Note 8.
I'd hate to see this line die, especially when Samsung is pumping out models like lab rats.

The 10.1 I used to have and went back to the note 8. Mostly for portability. I am TEMPTED to try the 8.4 pro with this stylys Apex Fine Point
It works REALLY well with the Nexus 7. Only draw back is no holder on the 8.4

But does it do OCR?
With the Note 8, all the programs - sorry apps, that I use the Note converts my writing to text and does a pretty good job at it.
That's really important to me.
I don't think the Note 10 has enough going for it for me to give up the portability.

The 10.1 does have OCR and the handwriting recognition is much better. The S-Pen also feels much better with writing with it. It there was a note 8(or 8.4) with the same breed of Android that is on the 10.1 I would throw the note 8 in the trash lol

I would certainly go for a Note 8.4 but I would never through my faithful Note 8 in the trash.
It would be a great gift for someone.
Maybe I am missing the point... the 10.1 2013 edition is lacking power. As for the 2014 edition it is quite the tablet, but if I were to get anything larger than 9 inches, I would go for a 12" tablet that ran a full OS, not Android. No, I am not an Android hater, just when you play with phablets, you get android, mostly because of the lack of storage space. With a true tablet, storage space should not be an issue for a full fledged OS.
Because I see the Note 8.0 tablet as an in between of sorts, my expectations are minimal. Given that the stock firmware works pretty darn good, having an S-pen, hand writing capabilities, and Samsung search functions that are lightning fast over Google's. The only issue I see is Androids inability to automatically sync time from the internet. Though there are apps for that. If there are any complaints about the Note 8.0 not meeting expectations, then the end user should have found what he or she wanted in the first place.
I waited a year for something like the Note 8.0, and knew once I had it something else would have something that the Note 8.0 did not have. I purchased mine knowing its limitations, as they did not matter.
Since Samsung has released the Tab pro 8.0 does it make me want one... No. Nor will any other tablet that has an 8 inch screen, well until this tablet becomes faulty, then there will be time for replacing.

I agree. I've been using the N5100 as my phone and tablet, and even though I think I'm going to purchase a new phone, I've gotta keep this as a tablet. Using S-Note for taking notes in meetings has totally spoiled me.
Shame that sammy hasn't re-upped with a 2014 version, but I'll be keeping my Note 8 for reading epubs and taking notes.
I'm as much a "new tech whore" as anyone on XDA (11 tabs over the past 12-14 months) and have come to the conclusion that there never will be a "OneSize Fits All" tab. Having had tabs from 7 to 10.1 inches, for overall usefulness, the GNote8 works best for me. Sure, it ain't perfect. Nothing is. And yes, I was tempted to score the GNote 8 Pro but the lack of SPen/digitizer was a deal breaker. For me at least. The GNote8 does all I require when I require. If I need a Windows tab the Dell 8 Pro serves me well.
We may well be seeing the winding down of significant upgrades in the tablet form factor. Minor tweaks and cosmetic adjustments might be what's in store. Do I need the "latest and greatest"? Nah. Find what works for you and just enjoy!

They all work fine.
Samsung's Amazon entry for the Note 8 now has a '2013 Model' in the name. This makes me wonder if there will be a 2014 version later this year or early next year.

The fact that it didn't sell well is obvious. It was released as a niche device for people who have use for a stylus, and cost $400 initially. It was never intended to sell well, nor was it intended to compete with other tabs on the market. If anybody bought it without a realistic need for a stylus, they did not do their homework and bought the wrong device.
Advantages of the newer tabs include CPU, screen, and battery. But you sacrifice portability. I have no use for a 10" tab personally, as it would not fit into my white coat.
But most importantly, what makes you say that there isn't going to be a new version? Just because it's not out yet doesn't mean much, unless Samsung actually says that it's being cancelled.

Is it worth the jump from the Note 3 to the Note 4

Covered Design, Features, What was removed as well as added and a Speed Test. Is it worth the jump from the Note 3 to the Note 4?
After using the Note 3 as my main device for a year then getting the Note 4, I like to say that there is a difference and it feels refreshed. With the 1440p Display, New Touch Wiz Ui, and a few new features. Now I did notice that there are somethings missing from the Note 4 that the Note 3 had. There are also something that have been moved and changed, like the Pen Window feature is now used with the Multi-Window feature on the Note 4. Spec wise there is not a massive push but its still a beast of a phone. Watch the Full comparison below and let me know what you think. Is it worth the jump from the Note 3 to the Note 4?
No, not really. According to Engadget's review, the Note 4 barely pulls ahead benchmark wise. The Note 3 is still a very capable phone and one I will be keeping for two years. Samsung is taking a step backward and has removed the ability to add lockscreen widgets. I know some of you may not think this is a big deal, but why remove a feature that you have the OPTION to use? It's ridiculous and I personally use lockscreen widgets. Google made it a feature for a reason and for them to remove it is just absurd.
The Note 4 does not blow the Note 3 out of the water enough to justify the upgrade price for me.
Agreed, If you have the note 3, keep it. i got the note 4 only because i could go to it and keep my note 3 to give to my g/f. I will say, i do like some of the improvements in the UI, but there are a bunch of things that bug me as well. Specifically the menu button is no longer a menu button. And a lot mor bloat to turn off by default.

Agree as well, I did the jump cause It didn't make a difference in my payments on my Phone Bill. I sold the Note 3 and payed it off, now I have the Note 4. Truly its a step forward and two steps back in some places.

I played with the note 4 today for about an hour at the store and just could t justify the upgrade. To be honest, the "premium" build quality didn't feel much different from. My note 3. I put the phones side by side and I honestly could not see a difference in screen clarity. The speaker wasn't loud at all.

rooting and custom roms will hopefully throw this phone into overdrive
Good comparison video. I will definitely be rockin my Note 3 a bit longer until the Note 5 comes out. IMHO the Note 4 is simply not that big of a deal..
Not worth switching to.
don't get me wrong, i'm loving it but coming form the note 3 its eh. Coming from the Note 2 or S3 then yes.
I'm coming from the note 3 and not at all regretting it, absolutely love the phone. Feels much nicer in the hand, runs a lot faster, I have amazing vision so I could see the pixels on the 3, but I can't on the 4, and I'm loving the camera so far. Freeza I'm sad to see you're not making the switch, yes I am pissed about the widgets myself, only thing I dislike about the phone. I never ran anything other than what you put out for the 3 and it saddens me to not have your skill anymore. I'm sure some other developer will hopefully enable lockscreen widgets and shortcuts. As for the price, yeah it is a lot, but I sold a cheap phone to best buy for two hundred and my 3 is up on eBay right now for 300, so I made money by upgrading
Damn,no freeza? Might have to take this thing back

THIS! A thousand times this! I hate the menu button being changed. I've found that if you long press the new preview pane button, it gives you the same result as the old menu button.

this is loaded question, per se. It's too subjective.
I think a lot of it depends on what tasks you're wanting to do with the phone. You already know the hardware updates. Do you use the stock Samsung or Spring software, there are improvements, especially on the Samsung side.
I even say the coming from the Note 2, it's a bit of a upgrade, which is what I'm coming from. Don't get me wrong, it's a great phone. But it wasn't the leap I experience when going from the Evo4g to the Note 2. I wasn't expecting it either.

I got use to the settings button now being a recent button. Took time and it did bother me, but im over it now.
UPDATE: After almost two weeks of use, I feel as if my Note 4 has more problems than my Note 3. It crashes and lags worst than what my Note 3 ever did on a bad day.

Iphone X user, Should I Wait for Galaxy S 11 plus or Buy Galaxy Note 10 plus?

Hi,
I am on the fence on buying Galaxy Note 10 plus, as I keep reading articles about the all the new redesigned Galaxy S11 coming in just 5-6 months. Samsung Galaxy S 11 is also being named as Samsung's 'New Beginning'.
Since I am a iPhone X user, but I am ready to switch to android, mainly to Note 10 plus, because of it's gorgeous 6.8" display and S pen.
So, will Galaxy S11 get rid of the hole punch design and come with full screen display? Will it also have 90 hertz refresh rate display? Assuming it will have all these display upgrades, it will be further transferred to the Note 11.
Should I wait for another year for the Note 11 for better screen?
Really confused
Nobody knows what features S11 or the N11 will have, but they'll clearly be better. There will always be a better phone coming out down the pipe, the phone you want now will always be old news months from now. Nobody can tell you wtf makes sense or not, only you can answer that.

I advice you to fully know and understand the s pen and all it is capable of doing, you will love it, or simply not, more to it, anyone buying a note series device should do it just because the s pen, if for the slightest reason the s pen is not that all great for you, do not buy a note series device, get a S series one

I would certainly wait in your case unless your phone is just falling to pieces. From rumors I have read about they next galaxy may even have a camera that is 10xs more powerful than the current ones. If you buy now, in 5 months you will be wishing you could upgrade again. Also, fast charging graphene batteries seem to be just around the corner and could well debut on the next version of galaxy phones. IMO, its worth the wait. At the very least wait for deals during Thanksgiving weekend if you must buy current version of Note 10. In 3 months prices will be at least $200-$300 cheaper than current ones and you'll kick yourself for not having waited and seeing your phone's depreciation.

That is true...there will always be a new phone coming in few months time. That's when I think and get confused of investing 1000$ in it or wait for a better one!
Depends on if you are wanting a new phone NOW. New tech will always come out every 6 months. Waiting due to better tech comes out... That will make you never buy a phone. I personally ordered through Samsung, joined their upgrade program, so I'll get the Note11 and basically have no change in bill. So it's not big deal.
The s-pen is incredible. I love it. I'll never buy an S-series for that reason. The Note is always a more refined S-series anyway.

I like the S-pen and it's added functionality. I would like to use it and give it a try. But my main goal is the best and biggest screen.
My advice try out both the Note 10 and the SGS10 in stores. This will help you figure out, which phone is for you. As everybody I know who have a Note device never use the S-Pen at all.
If you don't need a s-pen then wait. The N10 will have an actual upgraded camera sensor.

The Note10+ pretty much unanimously has the best screen available right now, so I say go for it! You'll fall in love with the s-pen I bet.
Thanks for all your replies and suggestions. I think I will wait for Google pixel 4 XL, iPhone XI and Mate 30pro to launch. And then take a decision.
Wait til the s12
S14+ will be better than all of those
