Hey all. Today i moved from my HTC sensation to a brand new galaxy note 2. Being aware of the burn-in effect i decided to install screen filter. After that, i set the brighness to the minimum in the app and i have observed some black dots on my screen, dots wich i couldn't see on the default brightness of the phone. Anyone having this problem? Besides that, i just love this phablet:d
Show us.
Pics or it never happened
I think he's talking about the black blobs normal to an amoled screen. When the screen is at very low brightness on a black background you can see these black dots/blobs.

I can see tge streaks on auto brightness. Mine goes back to Sprint Monday and I'm going toninspect the replacement for one with less streaks - I can love with the dots.
i have multiple black dots on my note 2 screen. am taking it for warranty today cuz i have multiple other issues like bubble under glass near home button. but will try to explain to service guy about black dots too but it will be really hard cuz it doesn't appear in well lit areas. unless he pulls a blanket over his head
maybe he'll be able to see this idk

excuse my eyes, but i really can't see which black dots that should be your problem in pic above... it's all black to me....
Hey everyone,
I got my black AT&T Note 4 earlier today. I noticed the lower half of the screen is slightly darker, and has a slight pinkish tint on a white screen.
I do notice it in some apps, like Kindle when readinga book. Top of screen is slightly brighter, and when background is white there's a very slight pink tint.
Is that normal? Or should brightness be uniform and no tint?
EDIT: I added a photo. It's not a good photo but you can see how one side is tinted differently. In the photo the brighter top looks greenish but in real life it's not green. You can also the slight pinkish tint in the bottom half, which is the left side of the photo.
I wouldn't want to comment based on the image you uploaded directly since how a camera captures a digital display is much different than what the naked eye will see. If the picture on the panel is not consistent and appears polarized in any way, I would consider that to be faulty. Get it replaced.
Galaxy Note 4 (pink tint lower screen)
Hi there,
I have also noticed a pink tint on the lower half of the screen on new Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
As i intend to do a lot of drawing on this device the tint is unacceptable.
I wonder if there is a way to calibrate the display?
I had this issue with my Galaxy S3 display. I had at&t exchange it.
Have this same issue on my Note 4. Posted some pics over in the thread on this topic for the Note 3 before I thought to check here. Basically there's a brightness and gamma gradient from top to bottom. The top half is perfect and the bottom half gradually fades to a point where you lose the first 8-9 squares on the lagom.nl black level test.
This one emphasizes the black crush, which can be visible in video content on a dark screen (and makes dark colored backgrounds fade to black towards the bottom):
And here's one on a white background. At first it seems like a white point issue (which I would tolerate since it's common on IPS as well), but it's a brightness gradient:
Between this and the fact that AT&T disabled the slider for auto brightness I'm a little frustrated with this supposed best smartphone display ever (I realize this second issue isn't Samsung's fault, but the auto brightness is unusable without that feature). I bought the phone at Best Buy which is mostly out of stock right now so an exchange isn't likely, assuming they even take this seriously as an issue.
My note 4 does not display this issue.
No issues here. Display looks very consistent.

Have you tried a dark background in a dark room? For me it wasn't that obvious until I did this (was messing around in Sketchbook). If the majority of screens are better than mine I'll definitely be trying to get a replacement as this is bothering me.
I just installed Lux to resolve my backlight issue and its settings menu background fades nearly entirely to black at the bottom.
*Edit: So far it sounds like this is an anomaly. You would expect places like Anandtech to report on it if they'd seen that amount of variation. I'm going to have a good time trying to convince someone at BB that this is a real defect though.
Erica Griffin talks about this issue in her Note 4 review, around the 20 min mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OyNWrQJzMY
I got a replacement and it's perfect. No pink tint.
So, if you have the tint return it. Not all Note 4s are like that.

Thanks, that was quite helpful. I think in general it's easier to trust reviews on retail-purchased devices over mainstream reviews with PR department selected units.
I went to BB today and looked at the display units. All perfect, but then that's not surprising (every company gives their display/review units a second QC pass, even Apple). I'll probably head to the only BB in the area that has units tomorrow and see if I can do an exchange. As long as they don't make me sign one of those "no more returns" agreements I've heard about I'm willing to take another shot in the display lottery.

Good to hear! I'll post my results after my exchange attempt tomorrow. Aside from the gradient I am impressed with the display. Not as bright as LCD in daylight, but I was drawing on a black BG last night and noticed that it has deeper blacks than my Pioneer plasma.

Fingers crossed for you to get a nice one like mine.
Yeah, the blacks and colors are amazing on the Note 4. The whites are not as bright as the iPhone 6+, but they are fine and way better than whites on my Note 2. In all other respects the Note 4 screen is overall better than even iPhone 6+'s excellent LCD.
One minor disappointment is the very high resolution has made some emulators dog slow as they attempt to render at full resolution, i.e. PPSSPP and ePSXe using ogle renderer. Hoping the devs find a workaround, maybe rendering at half or quarter rest instead - that would still be higher rest than my Note 2 at full rest.
What's the color of your device? Anyone have this problem in the white version?
my note 4 has pink tint
I have the same problem on my Verizon white note 4 but on top half of display. Replacement should arrive by Friday :/
You can replicate this by looking at the screen at an extreme angle, obviously the ones that see green and purple straight on are screen defects.
I have a white version and whites are perfect and too bright at high setting. I keep mine half way. The whites are better IMHO than the iphones. The colors more vibrant and, the sharpness is ridiculously sharp. I dont see how they can improve it. I only thing there should be a waynto adjust the color saturation, because basic mode doesnt do much on mine.
My Note 4 has the same issue. It almost looks like the while balance differs from top to bottom, but it is really the brightness that is different.
This is a photo of my Note 4 showing a solid colored image at #030303 (very close to black). It shows how different the pixels in the bottom and in the top emit light.
Image can be seen at 1x.com/tmp/uniformity_note4.jpg
Looks like crap.

similar problem
I have a similar issue, though mine is brighter on the right side than it is on the left. Very noticeable with dark background in lower light situations as someone else mentioned.
Can someone please take a picture of the back of their phone with the battery cover removed (Cover your IMEI #). I have gone through a couple of Note 4's which had a characteristic residue (grayish color) along the sides and edges of the device (AT&T Note 4). Thank you.

I've been dealing with the Charcoal Black Color.
Dude... you have had nothing but bad luck with this phone, eh? This and also the issue with the screen tint?
Maybe you should move to another device manufacturer....
hope this helps. I attached a pic of the back of my device (charcoal black)
Speaking about tint. I compared my Note 4's screen to my S4 Active's screen and my Note 4's screen does look noticeably more red/orange...

I saw that too in a edge vs note 4 review. The edge screen was slightly darker at max brightness but the note 4 screen was really warm looking (Whites were beige looking)

Did you make sure to have all the corresponding settings the same? Plus, you can't really compare the screen of the Note 4 to the year old S4 Active, can you?

Yeah all the video settings were the same. The S4 Active uses an IPX screen rather than a SAMOLED screen. The S4A screen looks more crisp and clear which was one of the reasons I chose it over the S4. Can't remember if I noticed any real tint differences between the S4's SAMOLED screen and the S4A's IPX screen...
I noticed with both my Nexus 6 and my LG G4 (and I think the old Nexus 5, as well) that if you turn the phone so the screen is horizontal and wear polarized glasses, the screen appears completely dark. Can someone with the 5X please throw some polarized glasses on, turn the phone sideways and let us know if you can see the screen or not?
It may sound silly but if the above is an issue, it is an absolute deal breaker for me since I always use my phone horizontally for navigation while it's in my car.
Curious to the answer to this as well. My Sony Z3 acts the same way, so I use navigation in portrait mode.

Well, it's an LCD screen, so there's bound to be some orientation where the screen's dark if you have polarized sunglasses on. I'll check for you when I get my phone in a day or two.
Yeah, I learned to use my nexus 5 in portrait while navigating. It's not so bad once you're used to it.

Can't do it. Horizontally, these phones fit perfectly in a little cubby, right in front of the shifter. If I tried to use the phone in portrait mode I'd have to pick it up and hold it rather than utilizing the cubby to keep the phone at a perfect angle for viewing for navigation and music.
Can confirm. Polarized glasses turn the screen black while in landscape mode. Just got my 5x today.
ditch the x5 because you'd rather not have ten dollar sunglasses for driving?
the reason I find this funny is that there are bmw and porsche boards with this same discussion. No Mister salesman, I don't want the heads up display, I just can't see it with my P ray bans on. lol.
I'm not trying to be a ****, I think it's funny, and of course, everyone needs a hobby.
carry on brother.
Horizontal, the phone is dark when using polarized sunglasses. Buy one of those universal phone holders to hold your phone near your steering wheel in a vertical position.
I had this same question the other day. My phone arrives tomorrow and was really hoping it wouldn't be an issue. Grrrr.
And no, I don't wear cheap drug store polarized sunglasses. They're good quality frames with my progressive bifocal prescription. Cost several hundred Yankee greenbacks.
Your day is coming, youngster. 8^)

Love it! I was drawn into this thread. My oneplus one is the same exact way, sideways with glasses on trying to take a pic... nope, the screen glass is polarized so it's black, too.
It's not that the screen glass is polarized - it's just how LCD screens work. All light they output is polarized. Unless you get an AMOLED screen (my past phone, the Galaxy Nexus, had one) then your phone will always be dark in landscape when you have polarized sunglasses on.

AMOLED isn't perfect with this either. There may be differences between implementations but my galaxy S4 is dim with weird angle-dependent rainbow shimmering from ALL angles when wearing my beloved polarized sunglasses, distracting to the extent that I would often take them off when using my phone for more than a minute.
Coming from that I'm actually stoked that my 5X looks perfect in portrait mode because that's the way I use it most of the time when out and about.

Woah, I thought it was just all the mushrooms I did in college that made me see that faint rainbow thing on the S4. Woah man! Wait, it might that you did certain things in college that you haven't disclosed too!
Different glasses are polarized differently. A good glasses/lens shop will be able to customize the angle on your polarization to help eliminate problems if you are having them.
Fired up the GNex last nite, and yes the screen is fine while wearing my sunglasses. If I'd have known I might have given more consideration to the 6P.
But ... nope. Can't hang with a phablet.
A tempered-glass screen protector will scatter the polarization so that the phone can be used from any angle.
I've had 2 Oneplus 3's now, and am now in the process of sending the second unit back for a replacement.
This because the screen wasn't functioning properly, there was lightbleed on both and the screen had a green tint on one side and a red tint on the other side.
Has anyone else experienced issues like this? Is it a known problem, big or small? Or am I just in really bad luck by recieving a bad screen 2 times in a row.
No issue here. Wish the screen was brighter but at least its the same as my g4

The problems you're describing are physically impossible on a Super AMOLED display... and to say that it has happened to both OP3s you received is just as absurd. The pre-applied screen protector is pretty crappy, but I mean c'mon... Are you one of those guys who returns things with the smallest imperfections, or perceived imperfections in this case?

Woah there, I have no idea how it is possible to have the problems I have, I know that with lcd sometimes the glue causes the device to be lit unevenly, don't know if that could be the case, but it seemed a little off. I tested this using this video on full brightness: https://youtu.be/vu0mQa2EpS4
While going from. Grey to black, the pixels should all turn of at the same time, or at least, that's how I think it should be on amoled. But this wasn't the case on both devices.
As for the different tint problem, that does bother me a lot more, reading Web with a changing color if you read from left to right isn't that good for the eyes or at least It bothered me.

Here are some pictures, it's quite difficult to recreate on camera like I see them but this gives a general idea of what my issues were with the first device. The first being the screen tint, on the left of the screen it seems to be more red and on the right more green, while this is a Grey background at about 50% brightness. The second is how the screen is unevenly lit while on a solid Grey low brightness background.

I just watched that LCD test video and firstly my eyes hurt from the bright white light secondly I am quite picky and having come from the g4 which I thought had a great screen (few bleed issues though) I am quite happy. I couldn't see anything at all on my unit like you have so maybe it's device specific?
I have noticed this weird thing though and it's when I use MX player pro to watch films. I have been watching the dark night for like the 20th time on th op3 but do notice the skin tones look a little warm and when i increase brightness it gets worst. I think this is a combination of the pentile display and the AMOLED screen with a lower resolution than we would like. I am sure I remember my galaxy note 3 and wife's s5 looking like this also but could be wrong.
Overall it is strange using g4 then using op3 it's hard to explain but they are just different not just LCD / AMOLED but the calibration also. Love the blacks though it's like the phone is off when the screen goes dark. Nice.

So the screen turned black fully at the same time, well there's a logo on screen, but apart from that all black?
I know what you mean by that, I think thats in all screens, not sure, but I had it in both screens but also the problems occurred on them too, maybe that's a feature, I at least won't mind at night when the screen is that low and a bit more warm toned. I saw it on a selfie I got on whatsapp, at night when I got it, I saw her face normal, but when I set the screen brighter, I also saw that the photo also had a background! which was invisible and dark on the lowest brightness.
no issues

Smallest imperfection? He uses the screen all the time and notices that all the time, how is that small imperfection? Also amoled screens are known for the issues he described. All screens have that issue. Just people like you are not good enough to notice it while others notice it easily.
