I found this answered on SU
"Historically Android phones did support two major protocols when presenting itself to USB host: (1) Mass storage class (MSC), and (2) MTP/PTP device (media transfer protocol, with camera capabilities). The USB mode was user-switchable in some configuration area. Since the Mass Storage provides almost direct access to phone file directories (as from CMD), there were many cases of phone bricking (corruption). As result, newer phones do not offer the MSC configuration mode, only MTP/PTP. So the answer to your question is "you can't", unless your particular Android phone does have the MSC/MTP switch."
So the question becomes how do I get it into MSC mode?

You said you found the answer, you have quoted that answer here, and I can confirm that the answer is correct. So, as it says, it can't be done.
You don't need root. All you have to do, is hook the phone to pc via usb cable, pull down notification bar and enable MTP for the usb connection. After this, you can open the phone's storage in Widows file manager.

It's not showing up in disk drill, and there is no mtp option only ptp and file transfer. I need to recover deleted files so I need to view the storage like it would an USB drive

Use 'file transfer' option and then you will see the contents of the phone as in USB Drive.

Good Question. I believe it has to comes from core of the Android OS. We can't just patch it from above. I remember old andoird OS offered this option. So it acts like a flash drive. Direct access.
Update me if you found a workaround for this. :highfive:

Hi all,
Of course I'm a newbie here.
I'm a former Precentral webos person who finally made the jump over to Android.
So far I am loving it, the only thing I really miss is the true multitasking, which seems to get in the want of working like I did on the Pre.
But I've moved on...
Anyway, when on the Pre it was so much easier to get into developer mode and make changes to the OS, it seems a bit more crypt and more involved here. So I am trying to be extra careful, which is why it's taken more 3 or so month before even attempting what I believe is the simplest of procedures. Just to root, no custom roms yet for me.
I followed the instructions over in the 'eg30Auto' thread that was recommended on Android Central.
I have everything ready and installed.
So now my issue is the stupid USB thing.
The instructions are to keep the USB debugging on! That was easy, I just went into settings and selected the check box.
But then next part of the instructions is the 'disable' the usb connection.
That is where I seem to be having trouble.
When I plug my phone in, under notifications, it's saying USB Connect (MTP).
I touch that which I thought would trigger it to become disabled. But that does not work.
And now I don't know how to disable that usb connected.
I did the 'runfirst' under the eg30auto directory and in the command prompt screen is it saying it's waiting for a device to be connected?
So that's where I'm stuck at, I'm not sure how to turn off this USB connected thing.
I did install the Samsung USB drivers which I believe I was supposed to.
So I'm at a loose right now and need your help!
Thanks guys!
Rob (if it makes it easier, I would welcome a private voice call).
If you enabled USB debugging, I believe it should disable MTP mode.
There is a mode where the internal /sdcard is made available as USB mass storage (ie you plug it into your PC and it becomes available as a *drive letter*). This is what the second part is asking you to disable, because if the internal /sdcard is made available as a drive on your PC, it is not accessible from within Android.
Note, MTP mode and USB mass storage mode are not the same. The former will show up on your PC but not have a drive letter. Mass Storage mode will show up as a drive letter.
If you are having trouble with the USB connection w/r/t auto root see FAQ #E3 in the second post of that auto root thread. There is a debugging checklist there.
e3) Why is the install stuck waiting for device to be connected?
Hi all...I am new to XDA forum, but have been browsing in the trove of information to help with my problem. At the end I am resorting to posting a new thread to hopefully help me in resolving this problem or provide a good explanation why it does not work.
Problem: I am trying to use the USB cable to transfer files to my SD Card. (I am not sure what reason, but someone has informed me that either Samsung's proprietary software Kies does NOT work, you can only transfer using Samsung KIES Air...which is painfully slow.)
Now here is my situation:
1. I have a Bell Canada - Samsung Galaxy Note-2
2. The Phone has been unlocked and rooted (using Odin)
GOAL:
- I don't care if I need to transfer files to the SD card, and then sort the files out afterwards on the phone.
- Primary goal is to allow me to transfer files (music, mp3, etc.) via USB cable.
Your help is greatly appreciated...in providing some sort of clear cut instructions or directions.
Thank you in advance.

I know you didn't ask for this, but could you possibly use Airdroid? It has always been reliable for me and honestly it's my best solution for myself because we don't actually have UMS anymore, sigh.
Airdroid Vs. Kies Air
Thanks for the response and recommendation.
So is Airdroid? better or the same as Kies Air?

I've never used Kies so I can't say!
But basically, you download the app from google play and go to web.airdroid.com and you type in the code that you see in the app. From there you can read your phone's text messages and transfer files and do other things via your wifi connection. File transfer on my (good) wifi network is fairly fast (about the same as using a usb cord) and it's good for me because I personally use Ubuntu and Chrome OS, so the USB storage options don't work or don't work well.
usb driver
All you need is go to samsung website and install the usb driver. You should have an option to do this during the kies installation too.

Just in case, make sure that MTP is checked in USB computer connection.
*Settings>Storage> Menu button>USB computer connection> check Media device (MTP)*
I know it may seem obvious to some but it does get overlooked sometimes.
Cheers!

In regards to the downloading the 'Samsung Driver' I have already attempted that, and with no luck of cooperating. Under 'device Manager' in Window 7. The listed device when I plug-in the phone is "Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM" with an exclamation mark. I have been trying to try the driver files so I can 'direct' the appropriate drivers file. But no luck locating it. The Samsung Kies installation mention that it has installed, but no luck.
MTP Option:
In regards to the MTP, I do not have that option available on my phone, the only thing avaliable is through the 'Developer option -> Checking/Unchecking USB debugging'
Please Help! :crying:
I have download the driver form the Samsung.com website.
Now, It doesn't technically allow to choose my specific phone model, with my carrier (BELL), so I went with the closest ATT.
I have located the folder with the USB driver, and force window to look through it.
But still windows says it cannot find the correct driver for my device....this is getting frustrating.
HELP...help...help...

That is odd. Do you have a Storage category under System Settings? It should show you available space on internal and sd storage. What happens when you hit the menu button? (button to the left of the home button)
When you connect your USB cable, do you get a notification that says "Connected as a media device"?
Heres what you do.
Make sure you have current samsung usb drivers. Redownload just for fks sake.
Yeah idk wtf ms prob is but its got issues with samsung phones.
So ok drivers gtg?
Plug in phone
Wait for annoying pop up.
Leave phone pluged in and on restart computer.
You should get the all clear but first it may give you the cant recognize drivers thing give it a min should work.
Other solution
Download this
http://www.google.com/url?q=http://...gQFjAA&usg=AFQjCNEJj15zF95WRtG86GXUDNcyErSAGA
Basically just keep going back and forth witj mtp and mount you should kick it in.
And you may need to restart computer.
Sgs3 easy wotks pretty good for me.
You gotta make sure you have the microsoft mtp update installed.
Pia I know.

I'm sorry. That is my bad. It looks like those options are not available on the stock rom. I thought they were. The option is there on CM.
It looks like it is probably a driver issue. If your computer is not recognizing your device when it is plugged in, it could also be a bad USB cable. If you can try a different cable, see if something different happens when you plug in your phone.
Worst comes to worst, you may just have get a card reader and connect your sd card to your computer that way.
1. Is cable good? It may be sending incomplete signal. The fault could be your device's usb port or cable or pc usb port.
1a. test device with another known working usb cable
1b. test cable with another known working device
2. Is PC port good?
2a. Plug a different, known working USB device into port, do other devices work?
2b. Plug device into another usb port on PC, not into usb hub or front usb ports.
2c. Does it successfully connect for transfer with another PC?
3. Is driver good?
(This is most likely your problem, but a bad usb device, cable, or port can make it more difficult to troubleshoot. )
3a. Re-download driver. BUT BEFORE YOU DO...
use a different browser to download or delete your browser's cache. (Attempting to redownload may just be grabbing the already known poor copy.)
3b. Run Windows Update after driver is installed.
If still having problems.
Search for, download, and run the portable program usbdeview. Attached USB devices will be highlighted. See if it shows up to the system and what it is being recognized as.
It sounds like either a bad driver install or conflicting program/setting.
Turn off antivirus temporarily to rule that out.

I know my way around fastboot, adb, command line pretty well, but I just got my N7(2013) last night, so in that sense, I'm a Noob.
Questions:
Can I just root with SuperSU without TWRP? Or will the stock recovery not let me do that? i.e. is there a signed SuperSU? I would rather keep my stock recovery, if possible.
After I root, do USB storage devices connected via an OTG cable "Just Work"? Do I have to manually mount them? Does it enable a Menu?
Is there any way to enable USB Storage (The other way, when N7 is connected to PC) once I root? Is anybody working on this?

Suggest you do
fastboot boot twrp.img
instead of flashing twrp onto the tablet's recovery partition
This will run twrp temporarily to install SuperSU's update.zip but will leave stock recovery on your tablet untouched.

Recognition is automatic. Mounting is not. So yes, you need to mount them. Whether you do that manually or through a helper app like stickmount is up to you

Doubtful. N7 doesn't have a real sdcard partition formated fat32. It has a simulated sdcard kept in the /data/media folder. MTP/PTP are the only ways Google wants to support storage going forward.
Thanks, sfhub;
Great trick about running twrp once.
That way I can have root, and my stock recovery.
Thanks for the other info, too.
No MTP or Storage show on PC
I am running windows 7 64 bit and I have managed to get root on my new Nexus 7, but now when I plug my tablet into the PC it says on the tablet connected as media device, but it never shows up anywhere on my pc so that I can transfer files on to it. The nexus 7 never shows up as an extra drive or as an media device. Please help. can not seem to find any info on this problem. the usb icon at the bottom of the screen does say eject nexus 7 when I click on it, and if I have usb debugging turned on it says ADB device connected but I still can not see it anywhere on the pc. Please help
Are you running stock or custom ROM?
If you running stock, you can try disabling USB debugging or try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391236
If you are on custom ROM, it appears there may be an MTP issue with some ROMs.
Yes I am using the stock rom .all I did was root it and I have tried with no success with usb debugging turn Off as well. I have even tried to uninstall the drivers I used to root the tablet , but can not find them to uninstall or delete them
In devmgmt.msc the device is either listed under
Android Phone
Imaging device
Portable device
Unknown
Do you see any ? or unknown devices?
In Devices and Printers in the control panel its listed under Unspecified as Nexus 7 but you can not do anything with it there but right click on it and hit eject or properties and it says Google Nexus ADB interface ___ Android Device ___ status working properly and that's it .In Device manager it listed as Android Device ___ Google Nexus ADB Interface.
I Got it Thank you Thank you. I was able to uninstall the drivers there in the Device manager, unpluged the Nexus 7 plugged it back in it install the correct drivers and I am now able to mount my device as a MTP device and transfer files. Thanks again for the Help.
I put Android File Transfer on my Macs:
http://www.android.com/filetransfer/
and gmtp on My Ubuntu Ultrabook, and on my old Xubuntu desktop.
I put the SD card in the Ultrabook, and copied everything I wanted to the N7(2013).
In all cases, it worked pretty much plug and play, but I still consider it a work-around.

To change modes plug the usb cable from phone to computer and pull the pulldown down
and you will see "connected as a media device" click on it and will be able to change it to
"Camera PTP" or "Media Device MTP". (Media device PTP is mass storage mode)
Be sure that you have the latest samsung usb drivers installed in your computer.
If you don't have it installed or if you don't see the options then that means that
either the usb drivers are not installed or the usb cable or the usb port is not
functioning properly.
Good luck!

Doing that makes it show up as a camera. Which is fine I guess, but probably just for applications on the computer that don't know how to read MTP. Neither is actually USB Mass Storage though.
Either will let you copy files to/from the device in Windows. OSX seems to need MTP and the little application Google makes available.
When people ask about UMS, they usually want to connect to something that's not a computer, like a car radio that can play music/video from a flash stick. Those devices won't support MTP/PTP. I am not aware of any way to get normal UMS to work on a Note3. Last I heard, people determined that a kernel mod needed to happen, and even if that does, the device might get angry if you take its storage away as it won't expect that. The external could probably be done without too much hassle, but the internal would be weird. And probably won't work anyway as it's an ext4 format, so only Linux devices could mount it anyway.
I cannot get my 3a XL to appear as a storage device in Win10
Is there black magic I am missing?
Windows shows a connected device "Pixel 3a XL" when mode is "File Transfer"
When I set the mode to PTP, the device appears in file manager and I can see ... just my pictures and screenshots.
Make sure you have a good USB A to USB c cable or if you have a USB c port on your laptop or PC you can just plug it in and you'll get a USB option. It'll say charge device tether and transfer files .
Once connected you should see the phone open up like any other Android phone. No drivers were needed for me or USB debugging.
apparently it was a windows thing... I applied some updates, rebooted, and now all is behaving proper.
You can also use a free app called SendAnywhere (available on Windows/Mac/iOS) and this will allow you to wirelessly transfer files.
Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk
I noticed this as well. You can change to PTP mode and then transfer between those specific folders as a work around.
PTP is a camera protocol and isn't really supposed to show anything but pictures, screenshots, etc. Android hasn't been open to being connected to as a USB mass storage device for years, if you want to transfer files you use MTP which is what is showing up as "File Transfer", double click the icon, move your folders into any of the accessible folders or directly to the root. What folders are accessible in either format is decided by the OEM of the device in question. Going back to PTP, most imaging devices now support MTP and it isn't much needed any more but is made available so that you can transfer to/from some older devices and programs which can only utilize PTP.
