How to transfer files w/ Windows 10 - Google Pixel 3a XL Questions & Answers

I cannot get my 3a XL to appear as a storage device in Win10
Is there black magic I am missing?
Windows shows a connected device "Pixel 3a XL" when mode is "File Transfer"
When I set the mode to PTP, the device appears in file manager and I can see ... just my pictures and screenshots.

Make sure you have a good USB A to USB c cable or if you have a USB c port on your laptop or PC you can just plug it in and you'll get a USB option. It'll say charge device tether and transfer files .
Once connected you should see the phone open up like any other Android phone. No drivers were needed for me or USB debugging.

apparently it was a windows thing... I applied some updates, rebooted, and now all is behaving proper.

You can also use a free app called SendAnywhere (available on Windows/Mac/iOS) and this will allow you to wirelessly transfer files.

I noticed this as well. You can change to PTP mode and then transfer between those specific folders as a work around.

PTP is a camera protocol and isn't really supposed to show anything but pictures, screenshots, etc. Android hasn't been open to being connected to as a USB mass storage device for years, if you want to transfer files you use MTP which is what is showing up as "File Transfer", double click the icon, move your folders into any of the accessible folders or directly to the root. What folders are accessible in either format is decided by the OEM of the device in question. Going back to PTP, most imaging devices now support MTP and it isn't much needed any more but is made available so that you can transfer to/from some older devices and programs which can only utilize PTP.

To change modes plug the usb cable from phone to computer and pull the pulldown down
and you will see "connected as a media device" click on it and will be able to change it to
"Camera PTP" or "Media Device MTP". (Media device PTP is mass storage mode)
Be sure that you have the latest samsung usb drivers installed in your computer.
If you don't have it installed or if you don't see the options then that means that
either the usb drivers are not installed or the usb cable or the usb port is not
functioning properly.
Good luck!

Doing that makes it show up as a camera. Which is fine I guess, but probably just for applications on the computer that don't know how to read MTP. Neither is actually USB Mass Storage though.
Either will let you copy files to/from the device in Windows. OSX seems to need MTP and the little application Google makes available.
When people ask about UMS, they usually want to connect to something that's not a computer, like a car radio that can play music/video from a flash stick. Those devices won't support MTP/PTP. I am not aware of any way to get normal UMS to work on a Note3. Last I heard, people determined that a kernel mod needed to happen, and even if that does, the device might get angry if you take its storage away as it won't expect that. The external could probably be done without too much hassle, but the internal would be weird. And probably won't work anyway as it's an ext4 format, so only Linux devices could mount it anyway.

[GUIDE] [Solution] How To Get Windows 8.1 To Recognise USB Mass Storage

How To Get Windows 8.1 To Recognise USB Mass Storage On Your Phone
I have had the problem for ages that when I connected my Samsung Galaxy GT-S5360 into my Windows 8.1 PC nothing happened - Windows 8.1 simply refused to recognise the device - not even anything in device manager - nothing - nada
However it would recognise the phone if I set the phone to download mode - but I want to use my phone as mass storage
Well after months of trying I finally found a really stupid solution
Solution
Install the usb drivers for your phone as normal
connect the phone to pc via usb cable (nothing happens other then a few beeps as normal)
now plug in any usb dongle that you have already installed on your pc - like a usb wireless mouse dongle
suddenly windows detects the phone and you can now set your phone to mass storage from the phone status bar
Every time you want to connect your phone in mass storage just plug it in then plug in the other usb dongle after

it maybe the brand of laptop too and the chipset of the laptop - there have been lots of problems with usb devices with windows 8.1 and inbuilt bluetooth too although manufacturers quickly released new bluetooth drivers as the windows 8 ones didnt work in windows 8.1
so this is just for those who have problems with their particular laptop
Similar Issue with Samsung Galaxy S
I had a similar problem when I needed to copy some files onto a Galaxy S. In the past, I had to ensure that USB Debugging was off, connect the USB cable and then select Mass Storage on the smartphone. Win 8.1 Explorer did not see the device although it showed up as SAMSUNG_Android in Eject Media and Device Manager had the phone listed under Universal Serial Device. I was able to access the phone on one laptop by selecting Samsung Kies as the connection method (showed up in Explorer under the device type rather than a drive letter) but this did not work on another laptop.
The steps described in "How to connect Android devices to PC with USB Mass Storage Mode" on device-recovery.com worked for me on both Win 8.1 laptops: enable USB Debugging, connect the phone, pull down the status bar, tap on the USB Connected entry and then Mass Storage.

What you said will not work for this phone because when you plug it into a windows 8.1 laptop the option to select connect to mass storage in status bar is not there - It just shows the phone as charging
The only way iv found on a windows 8.1 laptop with this issue (note it depends on your hardware to weather you have this problem) is to plug the phone into the laptop then plug any other dongle in - the option to then connect to mass storage suddenly appears in the status bar and you can connect as normal

Connecting to PC to Browse

Wow, I would think this would be easy (coming from a Nexus 5), I just plugged in the N5 via USB to my Windows 7 machine and boom, I could browse the phone. Now, trying to do this with my G3, I have installed Windows drivers and nothing. I plug the phone in and nothing happens other than a pop up on the phone saying it is charging slowly. I've searched the LG site and Google and found references to MTP and having 3 options when connecting the phone to the PC but I get none of those options and cannot find an MTP option in settings. All I can find is a Connect to PC which tells me to use LG PC Suite. I really don't want to install some other software. I just want to browse the phone and copy files over. Is this not possible with the G3?
Switch usb ports. Set up usb connection as MTP.
Huh? As mentioned, I don't get any options to select MTP. Drivers installed, various USB ports tried, nothing happens other than a slow charging pop up.
Edit: Seems the system at work for some reason does not see the device properly. Just tried at home on my PC and it's fine. Bizarre.
If it's a work PC, it is possible your system admin disabled MTP completely. Because, you know... security and stuff.
try going on your phone while it is plugged into the pc

N5X to computer via USB

Using USB - C cable to connect my N5X to computer, but the computer won't recognize, load new drivers or anything. I vaguely recall having to set something on my old N4 so resolve this issue, but can't remember what it was. Is this because of the C cable?
Thanks in advance.
Did you checked the USB debugging and also set it to file transfer instead of charging??

Thx Leontine. I had forgot to enable USB debugging, although I am still having issues. When I select "Use USB for: Photo transfer (PTP), I can see the DCIM folder on my phone within Windows Explorer. But when I select File transfer, I don't see anything. What am I overlooking?

Sometimes your computer can install the wrong driver by default
Computer>Device Manager
Assuming you have downloaded the latest usb drivers from google
Find your android device right cllick update driver software> browse my computer >let me pick >Google Inc>Android ADB Interface>Should be good to go..
OR
You can use add on software something like pdanet+ and you should be okay

Yup. You have to manually select the USB mode every time you connect the phone to PC. It gets tiring quick, but not a deal breaker.
You shouldn't have to mess with the USB debugging feature at all. I was running into the issue where it would install the driver and even show "Nexus 5x" as connected but not show up in Windows Explorer, regardless of what connection I set the phone to. Connection settings are available by just pulling down the top menu once the phone's connected.
I went into Windows Device Manager (while the phone was plugged in) and uninstalled and deleted the drivers under "Android." When I then unplugged and plugged the phone back in, it worked. On a side note, it now isn't shown under USB devices or even in the Device Manager, but that doesn't really matter. It's showing up in Windows Explorer.

I'm still not successfully seeing my N5X in Windows Explorer when selecting File Transfer. Photo Transfer works. When I go into Device manager, I found my N5X (listed as a Portable Device and only seen when in PTP) and attempted to update the driver>Browse my computer>Let me pick...Don't see Android as a manufacturer. For what is it worth, I am running Windows 10.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
In the notification center you have to choose the connection mode. It isn't the same as in the developers options...
Thx AlphaGeekV2. From the notification pull down, I chose "File Transfers" but still cannot see my N5X in Windows explorer. Any other ideas?

Try it on a friend's system with W7 and see if it works there. If so, it's something with W10, and we can diagnose further.

MTP Mode?

Is there a trick to make MTP work under Windows 10? I used it once (via the swipe down, hitting the USB Mode and changing to MTP) before enabeling develper mode.
Now in Developer mode I changed it under Network --> USB Configuration --> MTP but my tablet does not show up on my PC. Do I need to change anything else? Already tried switching between the USB configurations, rebooting the device and so on, but nothing seems to work...
May be wrong but:-
W10 out of the box doesn't support MTP. You may need to install the Android Debug Bridge USB driver on your Windows machine and then connect that driver to your Android device. With the tablet disconnected open W10 Device manager, now connect the tablet to the USB port. Device Manager screen should immediately refresh and show 2 lines at the top of the screen:
Android Device
Android Composite ADB Interface.
Assuming your cable is ok then the absence of these two lines indicates you need the driver installed. The driver is installed as part of Google's Android Studio in the Platform Tools sub directory. If you just want the drivers then they are available to download (no links ) There are automated methods , see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48915118#post48915118 or Nexus Root Toolkit does it. ( You should have usb debugging enabled in the tablets Developer menu)
Once the drivers are installed then when you enable MTP via the Notification or your menu "path" then Device manager will show the tablet under the "Portable Devices" line.
I originally got my laptop to work with the Pixel C using Window 8.1. I had trouble at first finding a driver that would work. I tried various drivers, but I eventually got it to work with PDANet. I believe that the trick for me was to first use PTP to get the correct drivers installed. You should be able to switch from PTP to MTP once PTP is working correctly.
I have subsequently upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. I had a similar issue again with the drivers. I first used PTP to get the proper driver installed and then switched to MTP.
I always use the pull down menu on the Pixel C to change from charging to PTP once working and then to MTP.
With PTP, you should be able to see the Pixel C drive on the computer but only able to access the photos. Once you switch to MTP, you should see all the folders.
For fastboot, you need to use PTP and not MTP.
Found this post via Google, it's an issue for me with the Pixel phone, too. Photo mode works normally, MTP doesn't.
For others who also find this post, I read that supposedly the Pixel phones install ADB drivers automagically, but this isn't happening for me, and @SmokinCharger's fixes haven't worked either.
