My Nova-3 recently experienced some water damage. Everything appears to function except the display, which shuts off at random intervals making it unusable. Additionally, I had a great deal of data in the privatespace sector of the phone which needs to be recovered. Is it possible to access this data over a USB connection?
Thanks in advance.

I've read a number of posts that deal with problems syncing, but none that matches exactly the problem I'm having.
When initially connected via USB, everything goes according to plan: the icons on the device and in Windows both show the connection, the sounds alert me to the handshake having been successful, and the device and PC sync. This state lasts a varying amount of time, usually about a half an hour or so. Then, without the device being touched, the ActiveSync icon on the PC goes grey, and the "connection dropped" sound on the PC is played. Nonetheless, power is still being transferred, and the charging light (orange then green) is still lit. If I disconnect and reconnect, the same pattern occurs every sing time. I've tried with a number of USB cables, always with the same behaviour.
Note that the device is out of warranty by now, so the lest desirable response is "send it back to HTC for repair".
[ edit ] Forgot to mention: Yes, I gently cleaned out all the pocket fluff that had connected in the mini USB connector on the device, but have not attempted a more prodigious cleaning.

Really? No one else has experienced this problem?

I know you may not want to here this, but that sounds an awful lot like a symptom of a faulty USB port on the device. One way to test it is to flash the latest stock ROM for your carrier/device model and see if it works with that. If it doesn't, then you'll need to learn to solder to replace the USB port. If it does work, then you've got some troubleshooting to do on your current ROM to figure out what is causing the connection to drop.
Also, in the rare case that you are already on a stock ROM, you'll need to reflash it and test it from scratch without anything installed.

Yes, Bob, I am on the stock ROM and yes, you are right, I don't want to hear anything about flashing -- even less about soldering. I, too, suspected that it might me a hardware issue with the USB port. I guess it's time to start shopping for a new device! [ sigh ]
I have had 2 tp2's, and my wife has also had one, and every single one of them has had the same issue. It will be plugged in, working fine, synced fine, and one small tap of the wire, computer, or phone will end the sync. It could just be that the mini port is ****. With that said, don't move your phone when it is synced...
my mini port has problem syncing. it's fine for TV output and headphones. but has same problem as you describe - so now I always use BT to sync/copy files instead of USB.
Ah well, have been looking around for the next great device. There's word that AT&T will get the HTC Sensation, but nothing confirmed.
Just wondering here if you tried sync with another system - same device.
At work I never had issues, but on the road with my Acer laptop I began having the same symptoms you describe, the usb ports on this (fully updated system) just won't enable proper sync (miss my Dell). Well I'm sure you thought of this but just a thought.
If hardware fault, try to change a new cable first. Usually the cable will tear out faster than the port on board.
The main thing is, when we turn off holding power button for about 5 seconds, does it represent any kind of danger to the operating system itself or any apps? It would be like what could happen to Windows when we does not turn it off properly?
I can't find this anywhere. I just would like to know also what kind of differences exists between normally turning off device (using Power Menu) and turning off holding Power Button for about 5 seconds. This doubt is on my mind since my first Android!
As we know, when we turn off the device the Samsung logo appears and there is a vibration before it completely is shut down. And when we hold down power button for some seconds, it suddenly turn off! And I know that this last method can be (or it's supposed to be) used when the device hangs and we need to turn it off, without needing to open the back cover to remove battery, but if we do this when the Android is not hanged for some reason, could it cause any issue?!
Thanks so much in advance!
Nope, no harm. It's like a fail safe option. When the power button is not responding or the device is frozen for some reason, that feature will come in handy.
Sent from my GT-N7100
It wont create any problems
main difference is that device shutdowns normally when selecting from power menu
the other one resets the device just like removing the battery and reinserting it
But wouldn't this reset be harmful to the operating system itself? Don't know, but something like corrupt files or system errors?
Due to the system turning off suddenly, without ending things properly...
What you're thinking of is using windows with physically spinning disks. When you kill the power, you risk crashing the drive heads and platters in the middle of a read or write. This is solid state, a flash drive, so no physical damage can really be done.
As far as open files, the core operating files are read-only, so no chance of write corruption on those partitions. And r/w on data files happens so quickly, the chance of you corrupting a data file are very very very slim, if at all.

I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question

Thanks. I was really thinking about this in a "Windowsish" way!
And the fact Android does a shutdown sequence when normally turning off made me think it was like windows installed on a physical spinning disk.
Having a persistent problem where I'm copying a large volume of files to the G3 via USB; after ten minutes or so, it will shutdown unexpectedly (not reboot, shutdown).
At those times it feels rather hot, so seems like the work of saving all the incoming files might be causing heat issue?
Suggestions/thoughts welcome...
Rob
I have tried transferring large amount of files too roughly 10GB or more of MP3 but so far no issues , and the restart issues is definitely due to the phone heating up, a safety mechanism. Perhaps u can try using a different mini USB transfer cable and see if it helps?!
Hello devs.. I truly appreciate you spare some time to see the thread
The issue is that I have my photos in the internal SD card
My phone fell off a high distance and the screen isn't responding perfectly
I have a password on my phone thus I couldn't plug into a PC
I was on STOCK firmware, no root.
what do I do to recover my photos?!
Hello there fellow M51 users. I’ve been using the M51 ever since it launched. all was good, until last month, the display just stopped working. Took it to Samsung service centre, and they said it was the display. Kinda frustrating how it just stopped working despite having no physical damages. Anyways, I set out to find an aftermarket display as replacement, as the original one from samsung costs wayy more than the phone’s current resale value. After installing the 3rd party display, the phone turned on (in safe mode?) and then turned off a few seconds after I got into the home screen. This kept on happening as i tried restarting. I also noticed the phone get unusually hot. Now a dialogue box saying “Serious software issue detected” pops up while booting with a “Check for updates” prompt. I believe it is updated to the latest version. Is there any way over this? The technician suggests we do a factory reset, but I have 5 years worth of valuable data in there. Can I at least be able to retrieve the data? Should i try using an original display, would that solve this? Technicians locally are unbothered and lazy to help, so I hope someone can help me from here. Thanks a lot in advance.
Welcome to XDA.
If it will boot into safe mode you can get the data.
If you get into safe mode don't power it down, grab the data. Go into safe mode, if it crashes in safe mode you got big problems...
In the future redundantly backup all critical data otherwise sooner or latter you will likely lose it.
If you have expandable storage always use it as a data drive; all critical goes here, don't encrypt it, and then backup the SD card data on a regular basis. Many time if the OS or phone crashes/burns the SD card and its data are still intact.

I have a 3rd party display in my M51, it is LCD, you can take it the guy who fixed it and he'll have a solution. My phone works fine except sometime when i use a "amoled specific feature" the display goes blank and i need to hard reboot.
