Last night I noticed Play asking me to update an app called Smart Device Manager. Having no idea what the app was, or why it was on my phone, I read the description:
OVERVIEW
Smart Device Manager is an app that runs on the “child” phone in order to power two family safety services on the Sprint Network, Drive First and Mobile Controls. These services allow parents to automatically lock a phone when driving or to prevent phone usage during school hours.

With a bit more searching, it looks like it's a background utility that comes preinstalled on our phones. It's a helper for parental controls to manage what your children (or employees, I suppose) are doing, as well as lock your phone when you're driving to discourage talking or texting while driving. Accomplishing this requires some pretty nasty permissions. Granted, it's obviously not CIQ, and it shouldn't be doing anything at all unless you activate and pay for the appropriate services, but I still don't want it on my phone, if for no other reason than it may be using up some juice.
It appears there was some sort of bug with the change to Google Play that prompted many (everyone?) with the app to update it, even though you have no reason to update it unless you're actually using the service(s) (Source). As it's a system app, you can uninstall it with Titanium if you are rooted. I've done so and it hasn't hurt anything thus far.
Just figured I'd let a few people know what was up, in case they get the notification as well. And if it's already common knowledge, *shrug* I guess I wasted a few minutes of my life
interesting...
Just read about this.

Thank goodness for custom roms and their bloatware removal.
What's weird is that I'm running Blazer Rom, have never installed this service and google play is reminding me every day that I need to "upgrade it."
Somehow must have been left in Blazer.....

I think it's a Sprint/Google agreement that is going to show up in our market suggestions no matter what ROM we run, the key is just ignore the suggestion and don't install.
Thanks for the info. I missed this one when I was getting rid of the bloatware. Even if it's not activated on my end, I'd rather not give them one more route of easy access to controlling my device. I suppose it's a good feature for parents/employers, but can you imagine if service providers started shutting down your phone (essentially airplane mode) if your were traveling over a certain speed?
You can delete this from system/app and it will stop alerting you in the market. Its actually labelled smartdevicemamager.apk in system/app.
Edit: Pointless post. Sorry.
When i had this app on it would give me slow data then i disable it and now i have full speeds

Sprint reps said the service has always been on the phone but the recent Google Play Store update caused the update to show up. Supposedly Location Labs (the company created the software) is looking into why it is showing up as an update....
Link is already in the OP
I'm not sure if anyone else is having this problem but it's driving me crazy. I (mistakenly) took the latest Verizon update a couple of days ago and immediately noticed that Smart Lock stopped working. I had it working perfectly with my home address and several bluetooth devices prior to the update.
I tried everything I could think of to resolve it, including disabling Smart Lock, removing and re-adding the devices, and even hard resetting my Note 4. The only way I can make it come back is to remove my Exchange account from the phone. Once I do that then Smart Lock starts working again.
Has anyone else experienced this problem or knows how to work around it? I wish I could go back and not take the update but I see now there is no way to roll back at this point. I'm going to call Verizon and try to get them to send me a refurb replacement and then block the OTA updates as soon as I get it unless someone here has a workaround I can try.
Thanks in advance. This has been very frustrating.
Apologies - I forgot to post this in the Troubleshooting forum. Can a moderator please move it?
Thanks and sorry about that.
You could use mailwise and bypass the need for exchange security.

That's true and I did think about that. My issue is I still want the PIN unlock when I'm not home or connected to the BT in my car so I don't want to bypass it altogether.
I've seen other threads elsewhere that confirm that Smart Lock no longer works with an Exchange account so I don't think it is something our Exchange admins changed. It's disappointing that Verizon didn't catch this prior to the update since it will take them months to send out another update.
Thanks for the reply.

It's a crappy solution, but you could use the outlook app from the play store. That's what I do since I want smart lock.

When you bypass exchange security you can still setup a pin. This is probably not something that is broken but is now fixed. I mean if you have and exchange account setup on your phone im sure your admin would always want you to use a pin regardless of location or convenience. So with mailwise you could bypass the exchange security but still setup a lockscreen pin and use the smart lock functions as normal. If im understanding you correctly you are thinking exchange security and lockscreen security are one in the same.
100% new to app design, asking this as I am desperate..
We are having our web-based driver ed program put into an app. It's largely done, only we are unable to determine how we can accept payments and the designer is not very helpful in this regard.
There is an outstanding issue here...Our app is for TEENS...we need it so they can enter payment info, their parents can, on their phones.
The PROBLEM is that our app developer says that authorize . net api is old, outdated and unsupported and he won't use it..so he is suggesting we use apple pay and google pay. PROBLEM is, it requires that the payment information be stored on the phone and it's highly unlikely that the teen will have the parents payment info already stored.
How can we get around this and allow people to input their payment information normally? Sadly, our site currently is using paypal for this but it looks horrible in the app and has to be replaced.
If we cannot use Authorize for this... what other methods can we take payments using?
I hope someone can help with this super weird issue!
I have a Samsung Galaxy S20+ and I've noticed recently that while I usually prefer to remove ads from various apps I use, I seem to be unable to do so.
Any app that requires an in-app purchase in order to remove ads doesn't seem to be working. I click on the button to remove the ads and just... Nothing happens. I can't figure out what setting or issue seems to be blocking this and would really appreciate any advice anyone can give!
Wassup Guys,
I am currently running a custom rom on my rooted S20+ .
Everytime, when I try to buy an app in the Galaxy Store and it asks for my payment method (besides of credit card & store credits),
choosing PayPal and pressing the buy button leads to an error, telling me, that my action was an "unauthorized access".
This means, I can neither setup (log-in) into my PayPal account and buy apps in the galaxy store.
I tried to hide my root with MagiskHide for the Galaxy Store itself and Samsung Pass, but with no result.
Anyone an idea, how I can solve this issue?
I wanted to buy a few apps for my new galaxy watch, sadlythere is no other source or app store in order to install
Unfortunately the decision to root knowing that it is likely to break things related to samsung knox like samsung pay or even google pay etc. is something that should be considered prior to taking the plunge to unlock. Sometimes people find workarounds for certain things but its usually short lived as stuff ends up getting patched pretty quickly then the circle continues.
Well, I ended up writing the app developer an e-mail in order to get coupon codes for the installation.
