Wifi Calling - Moto Z2 Play Questions & Answers

Hi my daughter and wife both have this same phone, my daughter can enable Wifi calling from the wifi advanced preferences menu, the option is not available on my wifes phone. What am I missing?

The first question is which carrier are you trying to activate Wi-Fi calling on? It behaves differently on different carriers. Second question is what version of the phone do you have since there is a Verizon specific version an unlocked version. They both have different software and settings so they'll be behave differently. If you have Verizon then the Verizon version will let you have Wi-Fi calling but the unlock version won't. If you have T-Mobile the unlocked version will let you have Wi-Fi calling but the Verizon version won't. If you have a different carrier talk to them

WiFi Calling Question

I have a Pixel (from Google) running on the Verizon network, and I've enabled wifi calling, which works great..
My friend recently purchased (also from Google) a Pixel XL and he is running it on At&t. He has a need to enable wifi calling also, but isn't seeing it as an option in the XL's settings (even though we both have the same Nougat version [7.1.2], though slightly different builds).
Can anyone first please update me as to whether At&t is supporting wifi calling on a Pixel XL ?
Also, since the phone was purchased directly from Google, why would the wifi calling option not be in the settings? If it were purchased from At&t and they do not (yet) support wifi calling on this phone, I could see why they would hide that feature in the settings, but it's a Google phone ready, willing, and able to be run on any network...!?
Please help educate me on this issue!
Thanks.

At&t is not supporting it on their network. Being that you have a Google version, put a Verizon or TMobile Sim in and Volte with wifi calling will work.

WiFi Calling on AT&T - Working?

Our company switched from Verizon to AT&T on same day I received my Pixel 2 XL (my phone, their SIM).
I am not seeing an option for WiFi Calling - I had this on Verizon, but not seeing the option on Pixel 2 XL on AT&T:
Settings>Network>WiFi>Preferences>Advanced>Wifi Calling (missing option)
I have noted that HotSpot is not yet working. AT&T is aware and will have enabled by Friday. My IT guy does not seem to think WiFi calling is something AT&T needs to turn on.
Anyone using AT&T have WiFi Calling working?
Not available with ATT at the moment. Possibly in the future, since Google was able to work out getting VoLTE working with newer Android builds.

Not getting VoLTE on T-mobile on XT1710-06 version

Is or has anyone else been able to get VoLTE working on T-Mobile US on this model specifically? LTE and WiFi Calling work in general, but the "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" toggle isn't there to allow VoLTE. The model has the same number of bands as the XT1710-01 model, but is on the RETLA channel, by the way.
Hi, actually I was having similar issues. VoLTE, seems to be different but is based on your Carrier mostly. If you call someone from a different carrier it may not be enabled. I'm with AT&T, whenever I call someone with AT&T and we are both with good 4g LTE, in the call, changes the status to HD. But, just with AT&T. At least that's how it Works for me. We should wait someone to confirm is this is how other carries behave.

Apologies for the late reply. Definitely no VoLTE or HD voice between me and other T-Mobile users. No matter what I tried it just never came up. If anyone's considering using this specific variant of the phone in the US, I'd be aware of the limits beforehand.

-06 is a North American dual sim variant, correct?
Are both SIM cards on t-mobile?
Could one use SIMS from different carriers?

-06 is a North American dual sim variant, correct. Updates should go through ATT Mex, I believe. And yes, you can use sims from other carriers. I used one sim card when I tried it and only utilized one of the sim slots as a result. T-Mo VoLTE just doesn't seem to have been certified for that variant.
So T-Mobile WIFI calling works on this variant of the Z2 Play? If so that is good to know especially when traveling overseas even if some other advanced features don't work.
I have an XT1710-06 retla device and I can confirm that wifi calling with T-mobile does *NOT* work on my device. There is a setting to enable wifi calling, but it never seems to connect and all calls still go over mobile. This is 100% testable if I for instance go into a deep basement that has wifi but no cellular signal -- I can browse the internet but cannot make phone calls or SMS, even though I have wifi calling turned on.
This is probably related to why VoLTE doesn't work either.
Also (as mentioned in another thread) still no updates for it past February 7.1.1 update. No later security updates and no Oreo updates.

Hi,
I'm super curious how did you get your Z2 Play to have VoLTE. I 've tried everything - new sim, IMEI of ATT branded phone, activated SIM on ATT phone, etc. , to no avail. I'm so frustrated and about to get another phone, because my HSPA signal is much weaker than LTE where I'm at and constantly have missed (straight to voicemail) or dropped calls. Please, let me know how did you get it to work.
Thanks
Maybe the problem is VolTE itself. As I tested. Unless both phones are with the same carrier and working good over 4G (good signal area) you can't get it working. At least in where I live that was true for a friend's phone and mine. So VolTE was good, until signal dropped hard. But impossible to work with other carriers.
Even it was good under Lineage OS and tested with Toxyc OS, but I saw the main thing is that 4G LTE should be firstly working fine. And same for anyone you call. Otherwise call will be normal. And for 4G LTE it depends on area support too.
Sorry for late reply

Same phone (XT1710-06 retla, rooted stock ROM on Oreo), and wifi calling on Tmobile also doesn't work for me. I can enable it in Settings, but I cannot send SMS or make calls over wifi with no cell service. After a while (a few hours) I get a Moto Settings notification that it can't enable Wifi calling, with a message underneath that says "Enabling." I can't dismiss the notification, only snooze it for up to 2 hours, and after I disable wifi calling it does eventually go away after a couple days.
Your problem is because none of the XT1710 variations have the 600MHz Band 71. It is the most recently added band and very few phones currently out there support it yet. As far as the HD voice issues mentioned...both people on the call have to be using a Volte supported phone and then HD automatically activates.

Wifi Calling, Verizon Pixel 2XL, using Straight Talk AT&T Sim no option

Hey all, I've been pouring over the forums here and other places trying to find a solution to my issue. I just got a Pixel 2XL the verizon version and I'm using it on Straight Talk with an AT&T sim card. So far so good except I cannot get wifi calling. I'm pure stock, android 9/Pie, no bootloader unlocks/rooting etc. The wifi calling option does not exist in the phone app nor in the settings anywhere. Even when you search for wifi calling, it simply takes you to the network and connections section of settings but wifi calling is no where to be found. I've tried the adb command (the one that apparently used to work on Oreo but not longer does on Pie) and that didn't work (though I didn't expect it to since many people said it no longer works on Pie). I have an Unlocked Note 9 as well and its wifi calling works perfectly fine so does anyone have a way to make this work? Reception at my home is somewhat lacking and I really need wifi calling.
Thanks!

Could you attach a screenshot with the WHOLE section of "Mobile Network", found inside of "Network & Internet" in the Settings -- make sure that you click on the drop down menu next to "Advanced Calling" -- this will help make sure that wifi calling is really missing as well as might point something out that may help with a solution. Moreso, personally, because I can't even imagine what the settings menu looks like missing this...

It might be a long shot but try checking the settings in the Google phone app. There should be a place that says configure IMS calling. I have this setting here and in the network settings. If you have it that's where you can enable wifi calling.

Been there done that. I have no options for setting up IMS calling. I only have SIP options. Also, I have tried the phone dialer trick (where you dial *#*#4636#*#*) and that shows the wifi calling option as a toggle but its greyed out and cannot be enabled. I even tried an adb trick that used to work on the 1st gen pixels, but to no avail.
What happens when you enter your information here?
I'll have to initiate a chat with Straight Talk. Like you I have a Pixel 2 XL with a Straight Talk AT&T SIM. The only difference is that mine is unlocked. I just ran my phone number and the IMEI of the SIM through the linked site and it tells me my device is not compatible. Since I have a BYOP SIM and the IMEI is of the SIM itself, chances are high that the SIM needs replacing with one that includes WiFi calling support.
EDIT: According to the representative I just spoke with, there's no guarantee that changing to a newer AT&T SIM will enable the feature. The only guaranteed method according to tech support is switching to a T-Mobile SIM.

Hey thanks for the help. I tried that link as well (before I posted here; sorry I should have mentioned it) and it said my device is also not compatible. I initiated a chat with them and they told me the same; switch to T-Mobile. I am tempted to do so but the one thing holding me back is my home is already a place I get poor signal and T-mobile's coverage while much improved still isn't as good at AT&T's. I realize that having wifi calling would fix any lingering signal issues but I do manage to get 1-2 bars of 3G at my house with AT&T, I figure I won't even get that with T-Mobile. So I am weary of the switch. I'll have to consider it though. I could also wait for the full rollout of the latest google voice (since it finally is bring VOIP without the need of hangouts) and just use that number instead.
So I contacted Straight Talk and ordered a T-Mobile sim card. It'll be here in a few days. I will post my findings after it arrives. Straight talk support says wifi calling works with all T-Mobile sim cards so we will see.
Hello all,
Okay, so I finally got switched over to a T-Mobile sim card (again still with straight talk). It took a while cause I had to buy a new one (the old one I had expired; who'd have thought?). Anyways, switching to T-Mobile solved all my problems and then some. Not only do I have Wifi calling, but also HD voice, VOLTE, Tethering, and 3-4 bars of LTE (previously on AT&T, I got 1-2 bars of 3G). I realize the signal issues is merely a coverage thing but I can say with certainty that switching to a T-Mobile sim card will give you all the advanced features. I hope this helps others who might experience this problem. I've been using AT&T (in one form or another) for the better part of a decade and can now honestly say, AT&T sucks.

Enable WiFi calling

With the recent bombing in nashville. my phone is useless unless connceted to wifi at home and even then i can't make wifi calls. Im on the cricket wireless network so i go down to the store, only for the wireless tech to not be able to enable it in settings. Is there any special code to unlock this setting. I bought the phone carrier free brand new.
Hi
Hope you are doing ok there
Well were u able to use wifi calling before the current situation you are in? The wifi calling needs to be supported by your mobile phone carrier so check with them. If yes then there could be a problem with your phone or simcard if no then you are stuck with qhat you have or you change your carrier to anotherone qhich supports wifi calling
Best regards
