Pie - Volume Buttons Slider(s)??? - Moto G6 Play Questions & Answers

So pie arrived. Have not read much on new features so was surprised by the volume button opening
two sliders to control the media and ringtone volumes. Was touching them to see how they worked
and the ringtone slider disappeared. Now all I have is the media volume slider. Have been unable to find
anything on there being two sliders or how to get the second one back.
Came here hoping for answer.

If a ringtone or notification is making a sound at the same time you press the vol button, it'll appear. They removed that in Pie. Google I mean, not Motorola. They called it a "new feature", which it isn't. It's an unwanted regression. Same thing with the expandable notification toggles. Google scrapped that too. Most GSIs have added it back to Pie. If you want it on stock though, you'll have to decompile and edit the framework-res.apk. Apktool was broken for all G6, and G7 models last time I checked. I don't know if that's been fixed yet. Without it, adding that back to stock is the fevered dream of a madman.

Okay, I believe that's the Republic Wireless version.
Anyway, there is an app on the Play Store that will add a second slider on your home screen when you press the volume button.
The app is called Button Mapper by Aaron Seagert.
You will need to purchase the pro version if you want to add the second volume slider.
If you decide to go that route and you need help with getting it to work please feel free to ask me.

Appreciate the info - will check it out.
I guess I'm trying to figure out as to why the 2 sliders initially appeared and then the one disappeared.
(Figure it is somewhere in the Pie settings.)

My findings

I've been using my SGN now about a week.
Excellent phone with only a few issues that I can find.
I had the ghost volume yesterday but I turned on and off and not had it since.
I seem to be missing my return button(next line) in my text message service, could be me missing something but when I send a text I don't get the large arrow at the bottom right. Its there on all other input methods.
Keep picking the phone up upside down.
I can't use the phone without a case really really slippy.
Other than that the phone is lightening fast responsive and the screen is too die for.
Get one , I love mine......

Great to see a well written post of your thoughts.
Thank you
My findings are the same as yours apart from the Vol issue, I havnt had it (im on Orange)
Phone is slippy
I too kept picking it up upside down but after now 3 days im instinctivly feeling for the hump on the back to orientate that to the bottom to get it the right way up.
I too dont have an enter key for texting, wtf?
In general use like browsing, the back round the camera gets really hot.
Phone is lightning fast but ive had far too many lock ups already, half a dozen ish. I hope the issues get resolved, I'll keep forwarding error reports. Im sure its just teething probs with the new OS. I hope its not the phone, im not exactly sold on Samsung quality.
Got my Samsung Galaxy Nexus last 18th of November and these are my comments
The Bad
- had that volume bug - awaiting for the update
- can not make video call, even with skype front cam not working (pls update)
- mp3 songs can not be set as ringtone
- some of my apps not working, like viber, currency converter
- no flash support - awaiting for it
- silent button needed in the power widget
- low volume, can't really hear it if phone is in my pocket
The good: http://media.xda-developers.com/images/icons/icon14.gif
- super fast
- nice panoramic mode in the camera
- camera is fast, not a problem with 5 mpx
- lovely screen res
- unique face unlock (but face not detected in low light/dark areas/at night time)
- battery lasted for 13 hours (depends on the user)
http://media.xda-developers.com/images/icons/icon11.gif i love this phone

MP3 can be set as ringtones, BUT they need to be in the ringtones directory. Workable idea is to use Ringdroid (or similar) to crop the portion of the MP3 you want from your Music directory and save it separately in Ringtones.
Plenty of widgets to control volume/profiles. Audiomanager Pro lets you create profile widgets. I use Extended Controls which lets you build your own widget with exactly the controls you want on it. It's not perfect (as it hasn't been updated for ICS yet) - GPS toggle and APN toggle take you into the settings menus - but it has been (and will be once updated) a top notch widget.
Volume - Try Volume+.
My findings:
Pro:
- Great screen, however, I really dont think it's a big leap in quality over my old Galaxy S, let alone the S2.
- Great speed, hasnt slowed down once, nice and fast and no crashing.
- Good interface. Love ICS
- Good reception and call quality
Cons:
- Low ringer volume and notification sounds
- LED notifications only flash once, would be nice for it to keep flashing intermittenly so you know you've got a notification, rather than having to turn it on.
- The pull down notification bar does not have quick access to the power bar (as per Galaxy S). That was really useful, so if you're in an app you can turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS etc, rather than having to go to the home page and doing it from there. Very annoying!
- No native video player to recognise .avi, .mkv files. Had to buy Dice Player.
- No Swype!!!
- No return key when texting
- No external storage
- Annoying browser experience. If you want to go to a bookmark, you have to press a button to go to the tabs, then another button to go to favourites, then another to select the favourite! Very poor process.
- Poor widgets for the homescreen (I want a nice looking clock). Wont pick up my location automatically, either, for weather updates.
- Poor camera application.
I realise the phone is in it's infancy, with many updates to come, but coming from a very accomplished phone, it's taking some getting used to, and some things which are a step backwards!

Android has never had a carriage return button on the stock keyboard for text messages. Manufacturer modifications to Android may have this feature, but that would be down to the specific variant (HTC Sense, Samsung TouchWiz, etc).

This was true with Nexus S too. The solution is to create a folder "/media/audio/ringtones/" and copy your mp3s there. The other option is to use an app.

[APP][BETA] ICS Notify! - Separate SMS/Gmail/Ringtone Volumes! - January 31st

First of all, you should realise this app is very much in the early stages of development, and as such, bugs should be expected.
So what does this app do?
Well, if you are anything like me, you will have been annoyed by the fact that in ICS your notification and ringtone volume are locked together. This application attempts to resolve that.
So far you can only set separate volumes for your Gmail and SMS notifications. Everything else will play at the volume specified in your phone's settings. More notification options will be added soon.
I couldn't find an application that allows you to do this on ICS, but if one already exists on here, then I apologise.
So yeah, It's pretty self explanatory, enjoy!
Still does not support 3rd party sms/gmail applications. This is being worked on!

WHAT'S NEW?
* Incoming call bug fixed (where it used the gmail values)
* The relative checkbox bug fixed
* Incoming call volume added
* 'Relative volume' added (thanks to pascanu for the idea!)
* Vibration can be turned on or off for each setting (except incoming call, caused too many problems)
* Help menu added
* New icon (by yours truly, if someone wants to make me a better one, please do!)
BUGS:
* It's rare, but If you receive SMS/Gmail messages in rapid succession, the volume will fluctuate wildly (multiple sms/gmail less than 1 second apart).
* There may be some bugs with the Incoming Call settings. If you find any please let me know!

Thanks Meltus for ALL your apps.
Great app! I was also very annoyed by the fact that in ICS ringer and notification volumes can no longer be separated.
A few suggestions/requests:
- ability to specify notifications volume relative to ringer volume (i.e. +/- a specific amount). For example indoors I would have ringer set to 5 and notifications to 3, but if I go outdoors I would easily increase the ringer to 10 (using the rocker) and the notifications would follow to 8 (no need to enter the app)
- Tasker plugin (endless possibilities)
Thanks for your effort.

Hey Meltus
Thanks for stepping up to fill this big void in ICS when no one else has. Given your other work, you're the right guy for the job!
As mentioned above, it is a little confusing for those of us also using your Volume+ app. Since that one has volume #s way past 10, does setting the volumes in this app negate those? Or supplement? Or subtract?

No, the 0 - 7 in this app refers to the 'volume steps', it can be used in conjunction with Volume+ just fine. So 0 is silent, 1 is the equivalent of pressing the volume up button once from silent and so on. 7 is full volume.
Sorry, I'm terrible at explaining things lol
Great Idea. It would be nice to have this work in ICS. I have installed the app buy so far now luck. It does not disable or change volume in SMS or GMAIL. I chanbe the numbers 0 though 7 but nothing changes.

Hi, it was tested on ICS so it should be working fine.
Does it not change at all when you get an SMS or Gmail? What happens in the logcat?
It doesn't seem to change anything no matter what I set it to. Even setting to 0 doesn't disable sound, should right?
I am not sure where to check logcat. Let me know and Id be glad to look.
Thanks for the reply. I'll be glad to help out. Hope I'm not doing something stupid.
I am running CynaogenMod 14 for captivate. Thought Id point that out.

The 'Relative' volume options are now fully coded and working
(-4 to +4. They will adapt to whatever volume level you set).
I've also changed '0' to 'Silent' and will be adding a 'Silent and Vibrate' option.

If you could consider ChompSMS as well please!
Yeah, I was not getting any notable volume changes. I had turned off native SMS notifications though.
Also, my gmail was FCing for some reason when I tried to open it, possibly from this app? If it happens again, I'll try to send a logcat. After I disabled the app, it didn't FC any more.

Notification Volume Control - Survey/HELP

Hello all,
When I got my Nexus 7 with 4.1 I noticed that Google put back the ability to control the Notification volume separately from the main volume. They added a little button at the end of the volume slider that when clicked would expand the volume slider into to two sliders one for main volume and one for notifications. I was excited to see this and assumed that it would come to my phone (where it would be way more useful) when I received the JB update (VZW).
Well I got the update and... nope not there.
Then I stumbled across this:
http://support.google.com/nexus/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2590464&topic=2590214&ctx=topic Look for Notification Volume
That clearly states the phone should have it. I then talked to google support and they tell me they can't help me and that the "carrier" probably changed it.
I then asked a friend who just got a GNEX from the play store if she has this ability and she said "NO".
So does anyone (besides rooted folk) have this ability? if so which carrier?
Thanks.
Anybody? Yes or no and which carrier would be helpful.

[Q] A few newbie questions.

Okay so I got my Note two and I've only just had today to have a play about with it.
I have a few questions if anyone (or more) can nudge me in the right direction.
Firstly is there an app that allows me more control over the track I'm playing? If I remember correctly but I could double click the volume button on my iPod Touch and skip forward or back depending on if it was volume up or down.
Is there anyway of changing the colours of the notification icons at the top of the screen or hiding them?
Is there anyway of setting the buddypage to an app. I like the music one but it always reverts to the stock player.
Last but not least it's the one that I find most annoying. I have a small tab light blue in colour which seems to come and go of it's own choosing. You can add different apps to it and move it to any side of the screen you want to. Is there any way of disabling it so it stops getting on my nerves?
Thanks in advance.

Not that I know of in the stock ROM. I can't say about other ROMS, I haven't tried them.

I think you're noticing the Multi-Window tab. You can either long-press the back button to hide the tab, or disable Multi-Window completely using the notification toggle.
Thanks for the speedy response mate.
Yeah that got rid of the annoying tab thanks very much.
Not sure what you mean by disabling it with the notification toggle.
But at least I know how to get rid of it when it pops up.
So thanks again. It was doing my head in.

LOL. You hate the one feature that everyone was dying to have.
Pull down your notification bar on the top of the screen.
You will see your toggle buttons up top for various settings, such as Wifi,GPS, bluetooth etc.
Slide that toggle panel all the way across. On the far right end you will see the toggle for Multi Window. Just click it and the setting is turned off.
Sent from my Galaxy Note II using XDA Premium.
If you download and use another launcher, such as Nova, you can have full screen. That will hide the notifications, battery and clock…and everything else that shows at the top of your screen.
---------- Post added at 07:05 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:03 PM ----------
I have the international Note II and this does not have a toggle for the multi-window menu bar in the notifications pull-down.
Good mention about Nova launcher. I use Apex launcher, and use two-finger swipe up to hide the notifications bar. I forgot that was in there.
Thanks for the answers guys it's very much appreciated.
I can confirm the back button works to get rid of the multiscreen.
A special thanks to mcphail for the pointers especially to Poweramp. What a hell of a player. I had given the note up as a decent music player. I thought also of replacing the earphones.
But the bass is great on poweramp. Fantastic program.

Kill App option for Nav bar?

I have seen a few discussions about the topic of getting the Kill App option for the Nav bar. Holding the back button would be the ideal implementation for me. I find it much quicker than going to recent apps and flicking away the app that I want to kill.
I have not found an answer on how I might do this on the Pixel 3. Seems like Oreo had a Developer Option that was removed in Pie.
A Gesture app seems like one approach, but I would like to hear from others on how you do it?
Thoughts?

Hey, do you mean that you want to kill all recents by long pressing the back button?
If so, I had a quick look and basically a third party app can't really do that because in java the REMOVE_TASKS option is a signature-level permission. This means the app needs to be signed by the same signing key as the device firmware. In short, a rom developer could implement this, but not a third party developer.
In short, maybe a request to your rom dev is the way to go!

I just want holding the BACK button to kill the current app on the Screen.
It is a setting that GravityBox allows and comes in handy to quickly exit an active application. I hope we see this feature on the Pixel 3 XL custom ROM that will be coming out.

Awesome. Are you using the Tulsa mods too? When I install the SystemUIedgebase.zip for the Tulsa mods, I lost all my other mods (center clock small ampm, small LTE, no GPS pin and 3Minit).
I would love to get the EdgeSense and the Status bar mods working at the same time. I have a similar question posted on the Tulsa Mod thread.
EDIT: I had to install the Magisk Mod for Edge Sense and now they both work! I dont see the Kill App as an Action in the Edge Sense app. Is it called something else?
EDIT2: I had to enable ROOT for the EdgeSense app, now I see Kill App. YEAH!

Another suggestion - All In One Gestures! It has a long-press back to kill app option, though I should note I'm using it having both rooted and reverted to the old, 3 button nav bar as per Mishaal's guide. Plus, doesn't work quite as perfectly as it did on my old galaxy phones with capacitive keys, but it does the job most of the time...

I'm not sure what All-In-One does when you've still got the gesture navigation pill installed, but these are the settings I've got enabled having reverted to the 3 button navigation (https://www.xda-developers.com/disable-android-pie-gestures-google-pixel-3/):
You of course have to give the app root access, but otherwise no special settings as far as I recall from setting it up. Hope this helps!

That is great info. I will follow the guide once I update to the December release.
Thanks!
Is "All in One Gestures" the same as "XDA Navigation Gestures" When I search the play store for all in one than the XDA Apo comes up.
Edit: I see that they are different apps. I found All in One on the apk mirror site. Any idea what it is no longer in the play store?

My pleasure! It is a different app. I'm coming to the Pixel from a 3.5 year old Galaxy S6(!), and I just restored the app from a titanium backup. I think it was designed for phones with capacitive buttons, which might explain why it's no longer officially available. For this reason, it doesn't work quite as perfectly on the Pixel as it did on the S6 (the kill app function doesn't seem to click with a few apps). But it does do the trick in most cases. For me, I'm so used to the long-press gesture that it was worth going back to 3 button navigation for this alone, and worth sticking with it despite some imperfections in All-In-One when it comes to the Pixel. I suppose if you're still on the gesture system, you'll have to weigh up whether its worth removing the pretty new interface (and the Pixel launcher along the way, as Mishaal explains) for a functional yet slightly deficient alternative...
Here is another explanation

I upgraded to the December release and than followed the guide to bring back the old 3 button set up. Long press of the back button kills the current app! I even added the menu key to the left side of the screen My new Pixel 3 XL looks like my old Moto X Pure.
Thanks for the tip.
EDIT: Check out my retro Nav bar.
