ever since the google voice update, with the widgets. Whenever I boot google voice the phone locks up for at least a minute before allowing me to click a message thread, then. When I load the message thread it locks up again for awhile before I can finally type the message. Exiting out causes the phone to lag a little bit on the homescreen. Any suggestions or others with the problem?
How large are your sms threads? It has been not breaking them up as frequently (or at all sometimes) as before, once they get above 300 or so for me the lag gets worse.
On the other hand, I've had it lag on occasion unrelated to that issue as well. I don't launch voice from the widget anymore, seems to usually lag more than if I just launch app from regular icon. Don't know why that would be.
Since installing the new version of voice it has been doing this to be all the time. Very annoying but I'm glad I'm not the only one.

I erased all my messaging thread except two and it still lags. Both threads were 15 messages in size
I've experienced this too. I uninstalled and reinstalled and it seems to be a little better.
I'm using tweetdeck and I am having a weird syncing problem. I'll tap on my most recent update and when I do it shows the full thread of the conversation. However a few seconds later it cuts out the recently updated posts in that conversation. Any ideas?

I haven't used the TweetDeck app in a while. I favor the Seesmic app on my EVO. Anyway, I can only assume it's either a bug of some sort. I still have the .apk on my SD card. Give me a few minutes to install and test it out for you. I'll also update to the latest version and try to recreate what you're experiencing.
I pulled up a tweet conversation I had a few hours ago and when I tapped on the last tweet I had that turned into a conversation, it only showed my last tweet in that conversation. Yet, when I clicked on "conversation", it displays the entire conversation and the conversation stays displayed on the screen until I hit the back button. That is how it has always worked. As I stated earlier, you must be experiencing a bug of some sort, but I'm only speculating. I installed the latest version of TweetDeck to test, by the way.
I will try to uninstall and reinstall. It happens pretty consistently like a tease.
Edit: Still happens! Occurs during long conversations. I get to The bottom and before I can read it;it cuts that part out.

Hi, I've just moved from android to WP7.5 mango but I'm a little disappointed by the lack of apps that can truly multitask, especially messenger apps.
Yea they all "work" fine but after moving from a high end android to a high end WP7 I'm surprised that even though the app can alert you of notifications through push, when you click on the appropriate app it has to almost open up/boot up from new, unlike in android where the program is constantly running in the background and can be summoned almost instantly without the lag of resuming from a deep sleep.
I've checked in settings under "background tasks" and none of the messenger apps appear there which makes me wonder if they are truly multitasking (which I'm pretty sure they are not) as this was one of the supposed key features of the mango update.
Does anyone know if this is going to be the way it will always be or is this something that is going to improve with time, so we can switch between apps at will without the app ever closing or hibernating?
Also, something else I've noticed, push notifications will not start until the first time the messenger app (in this instance Kik) is started up for the first time since boot. Unlike in android I guess a background process started running from when the phone boots so that even though the app hasn't actually been opened yet it will still alert you of anything new.
Skype is rumored to be floating about withi MS... possible end of Feb release? Would guess app will take advantage of toast, push, etc. if not, then as you've discovered with existing IM's, less than ideal experience.
Cheers
if you jailbreak your phone, there is a registry edit that will make every app work with the multitasking regardless if it supports mango or not. I believe it is the dehydration hack to 0, something like that.

Messengers like Whatsapp and Kik use push notifications. That's why they don't appear under Background tasks as these are scheduled tasks that are executed periodically. And I personally rather wait that extra 2 or 3 seconds for an app to load instead of having it wasting precious battery life and RAM. Especially the latter sucks since it causes instability and lags.

That isn't actually background processing. It just stays in memory so exectution can immediately resume without reloading the app and data.
For many things, this is actually desired behavior. Imagine playing some arcade style game. Switch to a different app for a few minutes. Return to the game only to find that it is over. And for other apps that don't change the display without the user entering information, there is no point for CPU consumption until it is back to the foregroung.
I have the setting applied and verified with Angry Birds that it pauses once in the background, but immediately resumes once you return.

I can see where you're coming from now, yea, I suppose I too would prefer to wait a few extra seconds than have it drain battery. Just didn't realise such a simple app like kik/whatsapp would use so much resourses to cause a serious effect.
Oh well
Also, as mentioned above, I don't seem to receive notifications via the messenger apps until I open it for the first time since the phone boots.
on android the power consumption of whatsapp in background is so low, that it almost can't be messured at all.
It is quite annoying that you have to wait for reloading everytime you get a message pushed.
i have tried not to use whatsapp and google talk on my galaxy s for a while and used wp7 apps instead. but it didn't last long. it's simply to slow, when you are used to android (4).
The load time of WhatsApp doesn't bother me.
The big problem is that I want to use WhatsApp instead of text messages, but because push notifications usually arrive very late (usually 15 minutes late, sometimes more), I can't rely on it instead of text messages.
EDIT: I decided to bite the bullet, and did a hard reset to my phone. Now push notifications are working properly. Yay!

But why? Why should the push notifications take so long compared to android devices? Surely they both use a similar process to check and receive. I've gotten so used to apps running perfectly behind the scenes that suddenly not having it almost makes the phone unusable
Having serious second thoughts about WP7 now.

Actually, I felt in same way as you do now, when I moved to WP7. I had an iPhone which works like Android (front ending at least). Instant resume. So I wanted to die everytime I had to open Kik or just open a toast notification. WHY RELOADING THE APP?
Now I got used. I really think MS is going to change this in WP8 (6 months from now?), and really love the OS. I hate those icons scattered all around my screen, and tiles are perfect at my personal taste.
And Push Notifications works just perfect for me. Me and my brother are in same group conversation at Kik. When someone sends a message, we receive together. Actually, I receive first. One second or less first.. Same for WhatsApp.
And Push Notifications from WP7 are much more solid than Android; MS use a system pretty much alike Apple's. If the Push Notifications are not working in some app, you can put the blame on the developer or maybe your carrier. Like Facebook app there is a 15 minutes delay indeed, but this is how the notifications are meant to be.
I had an Android and I remember the freaking lag. Reseting it all the time, worrying about custom ROM, ASOP ROM, updates that was not coming to me, infected apps, and I wouldnt change the app loading for this again.
Relax and enjoy your new phone.. You have much less to worry about now.
From what you say I'm understanding that you go and open the app each time you get a new message, or you tap the notification so the app opens from scratch.
The app is actually hibernating if you dont close it (dont know the correct term).
-Open the app and go to a conversation.
-Hit the windows key to go the main view
-Press and hold the "back" button, move to the left and the app will be right there, select it and you'll get your instant resume.
Push notifications works fine for me, WhatsApp at least.
Just confirming what Imsparta said. Any Mango app will let you instant resume. Follow these very simple rules:
A.) When exiting any app you may want to go back to, exit with the Start Button (Windows button) NOT the back button.
B.) When seeing a push notification or toast, DO NOT tap on the app OR notification.
C.) Instead, hold down your back button until your app cards appear, then select the app you wish to return to.
The app will resume instantly with little to no load time at all and you can jump back in and continue where you left off.
Happy hunting.

Yes this is all true and I am aware of the instant resume feature in mango, BUT:
Although a toast and/or notification appears at the top of the screen or on the app icon it still has not updated the message list within the actual app, so if you "instant resume" it still has to connect to the app server to retrieve an updated list of messages received which can take up to 10-15 seconds and can be quite painful if I'm in a 2g coverage area.
So in lamens: I'll see a notification at the top of my screen which also displays part of the message I've just received, and the app icon will have a notification symbol, but when I resume KIK it shows an outdated conversation until it "syncs" with the server.
....kinda sucks.
Don't get me wrong though I love WP7, just not this little crease.
Also someone mentioned windows 8, will this be coming to wp7 users or is that meant more for tablets/PCs?

I'm with you. Love WP7, but hate the multitasking. Specially when it comes about messenger apps.
And I mentioned Windows Phone 8, not Windows 8. Windows 8 is for tablets and PCs indeed.
I have a problem where, I am in a conversation in Whatsapp, and i am done writing a message, and then i lock the screen, and when i unlock it maybe 15 seconds later, i type, but nothing is showing up, its just records what i press but doesn't type. I have to go the the main screen, and reopen Whatsapp to get it working again...
Anyone else notice this?
Its really annoying if you are in an intense conversation and have to act fast
ROM: Codename Android 1.5.5
Kernel: FrancoKernel Milestone 2
I have wiped everything 1000x times and reinstalled everything. Found some people who had the same issue, but no one found a solution.
Thanks XDA,

Happens sometimes to me too and I am rooted on stock. Pretty sure it has nothing to do with us and everything to do with whatsapp having an ICS bug.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Whatsapp used to have exact same problem on my Nokia 5800XM too, I think it happens because of Whatsapp.
confirmed this happening occasionally on LG optimus one.
therefore, it is definitely because of the whatsapp app itself
usually i just press back button for once, back to conversation list and go back to my conversation. typing works back so you dont need to go homescreen thats two steps back
Confirmed bug for me too
Galaxy Nexus GSM
AOKP M4
Franco M2
To everyone who replied, thank you! Makes my life easier knowing its not ROM/Kernel etc...
Filed a complain to Whatsapp, such a great app apart from this bug!

How deep would this 'error' lie? Could devs fix it?
I get this exact same problem with Handcent! Currently using Swype, and like 30% of the time I will have to go back to the conversation list and re-select my conversation to start typing again.

I am also using Nova, but I'm not sure why that would affect other apps like this.
Any solution to this problem?
Got the very same at my galaxy s6, too. Android 5.1.1
I'd also like to know if there's any workarounds for this. My wife's having the issue and she's blaming me. :silly:
I may have a workaround. I have the galaxy note 3 and i use a custom rom thats pretty much close to stock and I notice that if I lock the device and unlock shortly after, I can't type anywhere, on kik, what'sapp, gosms pro, even google search. So I've just decided to test things out and see what's going on and here is what I found....
Eventually I can type again if I simply wait, but no one likes to wait but this is the longest solution.
Clearing the RAM using built in cleaner or 3rd party memory cleaner seems to allow me to type again.
I didnt like playing the guessing game in knowing how long to wait before I can type again so in kik or go sms pro, I would type one of the native apps' emoticon and then hold the backspace button down until it erases it...then I knew it was ready to let me type again (I have haptic feedback on for keyboard presses so I can look away as I hold down the backspace button - this would let me know when it eventually erased due to the haptic feedback of the smiley getting deleted).
Since the issue occurred only after unlocking, I tried turning off the lock screen completely and turning off phone and back on again....keyboard types right away with no issues!
Its more secure to have a lock screen on the phone so turning off lock screen isn't the best option unless you're like me and are the only person at home with no worries of someone else taking your phone so I decided to try something else that seemed to solve the issue, and that is..............turning off "Multiple Widgets" in lock screen.....tested and worked! I can totally type again right away after unlocking the lockscreen shortly after locking it.
This is what worked for me and for you developers out there....if you can use this to pinpoint why this happens on android, perhaps you can use this information to rectify it.
Hope I helped!!!
So I was quick to jump on the Android beta O as I was on the N rollout. I should have known there would be issues from when I was on the N beta but nevertheless I couldnt resist.
So far my issues are few but frustrating.
1. Anytime I get a call when the phone is locked it does not wake up the phone. I have to unlock the phone and click answer. Even after doing that theres still a notification that theres a call that I can either decline or answer even after Im already talking to the person. On the same issue, the proximity sensor doesnt work in the fact that when Im on the call the screen is still active and my cheek activates apps and whatnot. When on the call I cannot get to the actual phone app in order to change to speakerphone.
2. This might be silly but when using snapchat there is a significant lag and black screens between clicking on a story and it actually starting. Also in same app, when I try to take a horizontal photo it gets hung up and I have to close the app and take the photo vertically.
3. I dont know if its because Im using a launcher, but I dont get any notification dots on any of my apps. Maybe I have to be using pixel launcher in order for this to activate. Also, maybe I have to disable number notifications in the launcher for the O notifications to take over.
Those are the most noticeable so far but I figured Id get a thread going.
I keep getting Settings FC every now and then reboot doesn't fix it. Sometimes the FC disappears and settings works fine then it comes back again not sure what's causing it

Apparently pip only works with YouTube red or Google duo, neither of which I have to try. I did get another update about 5 hours after the initial update. It was much smaller than the first download.

PIP does work in YouTube red for me just not duo. After the beta update yesterday my phones alot snappier. Still significant lag in Snapchat. Also Bluetooth audio does not work when playing music, only works with calls.
For PiP to work I followed this thread

I don't have YouTube red but it works for me perfectly now. also Bluetooth has been working for me with my jaybird X3. so it might be some devices.

To get P.I.P I had to flash factory image instead of take OTA update. I have YouTube red so the background play can be a little funky with PIP.

Yeah. Also force closes after a reboot. Widget doesn't work either.
For me, Android Pay stopped working. Says that the phone is rooted, but it is not. Also some apps lag and battery life seems worse. I was thinking of opting out, but it will wipe out all user data, so I decided not to. Too lazy to restore everything back.

I've noticed that there are several apps that have newer version available, but won't update or install. You tube, Google App (beta), Calendar (stock), Maps & Transit (beta) won't install when downloaded from APK Mirror, nor are they being updated via the Play Store. They all work fine though, so it's not a big deal. I'm just wondering if anyone else has encountered the same or similar behavior.
