Is there anything I can do to this thing? Mainly what I'm wanting is to run Android on it instead of the Fire OS. Any other cool things I can do to this specific TV?
Bump?

Remove the back shell of your Insignia Fire TV edition and you can see a bunch of test points on the motherboard.
Before you do this. Make sure the warranty of your TV is expired.

1) you'd need firmware that was build for your TV models' specs to replace FireOS, which probably doesn't exist
2) there is a whole chain of security with checks from the processor in up to FireOS that will prevent you from replacing FireOS.

Hello guys. Just wanted to ask if anyone knows exactly what is going on in this video.
Is this a custom ROM running Android Lollipop?? Sounds too good to be true.
Seeing is believing I guess.
Awesome if true!! Hope coming soon to our Amazon fire tv's Can't wait.

As he says right at the beginning "this is the adt-1 google developers". The titles are all jacked up. That is not the Fire TV.

I don't know what "adt-1 google developers" is. I'll have to look that up.
What I do know is that the title of his video( Actually all his videos), have the words "Amazon Fire Stick" on them.
It's kinda misleading and had to ask someone that knows about this kinda stuff.
Why would he title almost all his videos like this
He even made an unboxing of new Fire Tv stick... Bummer.
Looks cool though. Would me nice to someday run android 5.0 on Fire TV like this video.
We haven't had no new root available For Fire TV since first root method was discovered to work on FireTV.
Trying not to lose hope and this video lifted my spirits if even for just a second... actually, Split-second:laugh:
Thanks for checking in on this.
Hope someday we can install rbox Fire TV Mods and a whole lot more soon.
Need to hook up my new Fire TV Stick and this would have been a cool mod:fingers-crossed:

Hi,
I am using the Flirc with the AFT with XBMC, my sound system and TV.
Works very well. You can configure all needs so that you can loose all other remotes.
Only downside is that I can't get the reboot function to work, so that I need the original FTV remote for that.
Check with Logitech support whether your remote can be programmed for that.
Apart from that I (and wifey more importantly) are happy with the setup.

I'd buy it again. Even at full retail. But right now they're on sale for $14 on Amazon. Support is very active and, except for a couple of minor niggles, quality is high. Also, he gives a portion of the proceeds to cancer research.
To use it with the Fire TV, you'll need (at a minimum) a USB extension. I bought Amazon's smallest 4-port hub and have the Logitec Unifying Receiver in one port and the Flirc in another. No external power.

I was wondering the same until I borked mine a couple of times wile playing with launchers. It was easier to C-A-D than pull the plug.
I think.

Well sometimes Netlix or a Kodi plugin crashes so that the reboot is the fastest option.
It's not so much whether I need it but that the functionality is not there. I would have loved for it to replace the original remote completely.
But all in aoll I'm happy with it and am keeping the original remote within reach just in case.
would you say its worth paying an extra 20£ uk for it.. its cheaper in america
so you will have all the usual amazon fire tv remote options and in addition extra for xbmc? is this easy to set up

That's a tough call. Really only you can answer that one. I would do it again for the sake of convenience.

Yes, all the Fire TV options and more - on whatever buttons you want them on. And you can use XBMC as-is or use a custom keymap.

Hi my fire tv got the 5.0.5 update today and I am based in the uk, however it does not seem to include Alexa is there a way of adding Alexa to my fire tv stick?
I would like to know too. That's the only reason I updated.
Thread cleaned of nonsense.
Carry on. :good:

Trying to find the same, looks like we'll need to await Amazon UK getting the finger out.

Not possible, don't hold your breathe that an exploit gets found. Best is to get the second gen stick, that one is rooted and unlocked within no time...
Edit: Seems that it could be possible soon... xda thread

The currently selled non4k stick(s) is the second gen one. Quick check, you see the name in ADB shell, 'bueller' is the old first gen, 'tank' the 2gen and 'mantis' the 4k one.
Thank you for your answer, if I have this tank generation, what should I do to root it? Is it as easy as that?
Again, thanks

Depends on you, you can look into this thread, it's all descriped in there. You have to be carefull, the resistor that needs to grounded out to the shield is really small and gets easily damaged. A few guys bricked the stick...
Hello everybody,
I probably have a stupid question, but how do I know which stick generation to buy from amazon now? Is it mantis or bueller? Is that Generation 2 or 3? I don't get it... Amazon doesn't list any informations about device names.
Thx in advance

Connect with adb, type adb shell and watch out for the name
Stick names from first gen to last, montoya, tank, mantis
First gen box is bueller, 4k second gen is sloane.
The 4k stick currently sold is mantis, the third gen.
the non 4k is the second gen tank

I know how to do that after I bought the device, I meant how to find out what the devices are named before buying them from Amazon.
At that moment Amazon lists a normal Fire TV Stick, a Fire TV Stick 4K and a Fire TV Cube. Mantis is which one?

As I said earlier, mantis is the third generation FireTVstick, i.e. the current 4k stick.
That 'normal' stick is the second gen stick, called 'tank', i.e. the current Fire TV Stick without 4k.

I thank you again, but you must forgive me. I didn't expect Amazon to offer different generations at the same time. With the fire tablets, only one generation is offered at the same time and next year, when the Fire 7 FullHD comes out, the old one disappears from the shop overnight. So I thought that there are two current fire sticks, a FullHD and a 4K variant and not that the first one would be the old one. There are still a lot of FullHD TVs out there.

Yeah, they sell different stick versions... as of today the second and third generation.
There are two second Gen Stick versions out (stick without 4k), one with and one without alexa (I think the one without alexa is called international version), but both are 'tank' devices.
If you wan't the newest stick, go for the 4k fireTVStick, called mantis.

But per OP, no way to identify the model Amazon will actually ship you I assume.

Nope Of course you can identify the Stick model, i.e. decide which variant you buy...
like I said, only the new stick is 4k capable (QFHD), you see this in the amz. offer and ofcourse that stick is a bit more expensive than the older FullHD variant.
For identify the older FullHD stick, the 'basic' or 'international' version is imho the variant without alexa... slightly cheaper than the normal FullHD fireStick with alexa (and a better remote).
